Coexist Coffee Co. @ Pasir Panjang Road - New Third Outlet In The Rather Off-The-Beaten-Path Part of Singapore

Coexist Coffee Co. has opened its third outlet along Pasir Panjang Road, bringing its signature speciality coffees and hearty brunch offerings to this rather off-the-beaten-path part of Singapore. When I first walked into its minimalist space, what immediately caught my attention was its sheer spaciousness. It was indeed a much-needed retreat from the surrounding traffic and industrial density.

The food menu is well-curated, featuring a hearty selection spanning Brunch, Mains, Pastas, and Desserts. We tried two brunch items, both of which checked all the boxes of what makes a satisfying brunch.

Smoked Salmon Toast 4.8/5

The Smoked Salmon Toast ($20, +$4 for scrambled eggs) came generously topped with ribbons of smoked salmon, drizzled with dill yoghurt, on sourdough toast. With such a hearty serving of salmon, the toast's thickness provided a good balance, though a touch more dill yoghurt would have helped round out the flavours and mouthfeel. The scrambled eggs were delightfully rich and buttery.

Grilled Cheese Sandwich 4/5

The Grilled Cheese Sandwich ($20) with Tomato Soup reminded me of a version I once had in Bali, and I was pleasantly surprised to find it here as well. Between two slices of sourdough was a gooey mix of Colby Jack, Pepper Jack, and Mozzarella, offering a nice complexity of flavours. The accompanying tomato soup was delectable, though it could use a bit more savouriness and punch. The herbed potatoes were fluffy inside with a crisp skin, and I appreciated that both dishes came with a well portioned mesclun salad.

Carrot Cake Fries 3.8/5

For something to share, one of the popular finger foods here is the Carrot Cake Fries ($12). I considered them the level-up old-school carrot cake sticks. Each stick was battered and fried, then topped with sambal mayo and dehydrated chye poh.

Burnt Butter Toast 5/5

Burnt Butter Toast ($10), found under the Dessert section, was a delightful standout, but it is, in fact, wholesome and delicious enough to join the rest as a main brunch item. The toasted brioche had a beautifully caramelised crust, while the inside stayed soft and fluffy. The blueberry compote tasted homemade — plump and juicy, just lightly sweetened to complement the natural tartness — and the cream tied everything together perfectly. A simple dish, done exceptionally well.

Piccolo, Coconut Cold Brew

The coffee menu is extensive, offering both familiar classics and creative house specials. I had a double shot Piccolo and a Coconut Cold Brew ($7), the latter featuring a 12-hour cold brew mixed with coconut water. The piccolo, even with an extra shot, remained smooth and easy to drink. The cold brew, meanwhile, was refreshingly light, a great alternative to sweetened black coffee.

Coexist Coffee Co. has not only brought its speciality coffees and wholesome food to the Pasir Panjang quartier, but also created a welcoming space where one can truly linger.

Choon Hoy Parlor @ Arcade The Capitol Kempinski - Bringing A Delicious New Chapter to Singapore Soul Food

After a successful debut at Beach Road in May 2024, Choon Hoy Parlor has now found its new home at Arcade @ The Capitol Kempinski, sitting right next to Chef Dylan Ong’s other venture, The Masses. This latest iteration of the restaurant continues its heartfelt tribute to Chef Dylan’s beloved mother, with a concept rooted in nostalgic home-style cooking but given refined, modern interpretations.

The humble kaya toast gets a modern lift with the Roti Bakar ($8.90). Crisp toast is layered with coffee butter and salted egg kaya, then crowned with smoked lumpfish caviar. While this twist on the traditional Hainanese breakfast is inventive, the fusion of flavours may not be for everyone, but it certainly makes for a conversation starter.

Oriental Charcuterie Board 4/5

One of the more surprising highlights is the Oriental Charcuterie Board ($25.90). This dish cleverly reimagines the Western classic with an Asian twist — think house-cured XO lap cheong, duck liver sausage, waxed duck, and kampot pepper sausage, all paired with crispy you tiao and tempeh. A trio of punchy sides, including pickled mango with belachan, achar, and fu ru (fermented beancurd) labneh, adds bright acidity and complexity.

Marinated Kingfish 4.2/5

Inspired by hawker-style yusheng, the Marinated Kingfish ($19.90) features sashimi-style kingfish tossed in a tangy, spicy dressing of chilli oil, calamansi, and She De Baijiu. Topped with endives and fresh herbs, this is a refreshing, elegant dish that still pays homage to its street food roots.

Buah Keluak Typhoon Soft Shell Crab 4/5

A bold twist on the classic typhoon shelter-style crab, the Buah Keluak Typhoon Soft Shell Crab ($25.90) features lightly battered and deep-fried soft shell crab topped with a heady mix of stir-fried aromatics — garlic, shallots, dried shrimp, fresh chilli, and the unmistakably earthy buah keluak. It’s a punchy, umami-laden flavour bomb with layers of texture that make each bite immensely satisfying.

Same Same But Different Pork Satay 4.2/5

The Same Same But Different Pork Satay ($16.90/$31.90) is a clever reimagining of satay as a DIY experience. Grilled pork is served with popiah skin wraps, pineapple jam, peanut sauce, and fresh herbs — think of it as satay meets Korean BBQ. It's fun, flavourful, and highly customisable.

Chye Ber aka Vegetable Ends 5/5

One of the standout dishes of the evening was the Chye Ber aka Vegetable Ends ($16.90). It reminded me of a similar rendition from Liu Fu Si Fang Cai, but this version takes it up a notch. The assorted vegetable ends are stewed until meltingly tender in a tangy, garlicky gravy made with tamarind, tomato, and dried chilli, enriched further with the richness of pig trotter. The result is a deeply comforting dish with an elevated, robust flavour profile.

The Morel Silkie Chicken Consommé ($14.90/$34.90) offers delicate clarity and depth. The double-boiled broth, infused with morels, cordyceps, and honey dates, is reminiscent of traditional Chinese herbal soups but elevated in its finesse.

Mocha Prime Pork Ribs 4.2/5

Taking cues from the classic coffee pork ribs, Mocha Prime Pork Ribs ($25.90) ups the ante with 15-hour sous vide ribs, a sticky coffee glaze, and a velvety Vietnamese egg coffee espuma. Finished with pistachios and cocoa nibs, this dish brings creativity and decadence in equal measure.

A new menu addition, the Assam Stingray ($39.90), impressed with its bright, tangy Malay-style gravy packed with tamarind, lemongrass, and lime juice. The stingray was tender, and the medley of vegetables — brinjal, tomato, okra, and pineapple — lent a balanced sweet-sour complexity. It is one of the most complete and compelling dishes on the menu.

The Claypot Dry Laksa ($18.90/$33.90) is one for laksa lovers seeking something novel. Cooked in a claypot for added wok hei, the dish delivers intense laksa rempah flavour, bolstered by cockles, prawns, beansprouts, and sinful pork lard. It's a satisfying, punchy reinterpretation.

We wrapped up the meal with the Trio of Orh Nee ($12.90), a modern reinterpretation of one of Chef Dylan’s cherished childhood desserts. This playful version features a medley of yam, sweet potato, and purple potato, enriched with brown butter and maple syrup for added depth. Served with coconut ice cream, chewy taro balls, ginkgo nuts, and a delicate pork lard tuile, it’s a whimsical yet heartfelt tribute to a classic heirloom recipe.

Finishing on a tropical note, the Baijiu & Lychee ($13.90) is a layered dessert of pineapple chutney, lychee salsa, foams and sorbets, brightened with perilla and cooled with coconut ice cream. It’s refreshing, well-executed, and slightly boozy in a good way.

Sampanman Kelong @ Jurong Point - Opens Second Outlet in The West with Free-Flow Chendol and Exclusive Dishes

Following its debut at Jewel Changi Airport, Sampanman Kelong has cast its nets westward with the opening of its second outlet at Jurong Point. This new branch offers several exclusive items, including free-flow Chendol and outlet-only dishes, while the flagship at Jewel has also undergone a recent menu refresh.

Grilled Shellfish Sampan 3/5

A highlight of our visit was the Grilled Shellfish Sampan ($39). It came in a vibrant, rustic presentation served atop a wooden boat. The dish features an enticing mix of flower clams, prawns, and scallops, all tossed in a sweet and mildly spicy kicap manis sauce that's rich, sticky, and thoroughly addictive. While the sauce elevated the seafood, the portion was underwhelming, both in terms of quality and quantity, especially for its price point.

To round out our meal, we added on the Tingkat set — available in 2-Tier ($14) or 3-Tier ($20) options. We chose the 3-Tier set, which allowed us to select one item each from the rice, vegetable, and meat categories for a satisfying and balanced meal.

Blue Pea Rice 4/5

From the rice options — which also include Jasmine White Rice and Egg Fried Rice — we went with the Blue Pea Rice. It was nicely steamed, lightly aromatic, and added a touch of visual appeal to the tingkat.

Stir-Fried Sweet Potato Leaves 3/5

For vegetables, we opted for the Stir-Fried Sweet Potato Leaves. While the greens were tender and well-cooked, the sambal leaned a little too sweet, lacking the fiery punch I had hoped for. Moreover, the vegetables were chopped into small pieces, which took away from the textural enjoyment. Other options include Stir-Fried French Beans and Spicy Egg Sambal.

Nanyang Chicken Curry 4.2/5

The Nanyang Chicken Curry was the standout among the tingkat selections. The chicken was succulent and tender, and the curry sauce was rich, lemak, and fragrant. It was a well-executed, comforting dish. Other available proteins include Berempah Fried Chicken and Fried Mid Wing.

Butter & Gula Melaka Toast 3/5

For something sweet, I went off the beaten track and tried the Butter & Gula Melaka Toast ($2.90). The toast had a lovely charred exterior with a soft, fluffy interior. Unfortunately, the gula melaka spread lacked the depth and smoky aroma typically associated with high-quality palm sugar. It leaned more towards one-dimensional sweetness, which made it less memorable.

Sampanman Kelong continues to offer a kampung-inspired seafood experience in the modern mall setting, with creative local twists and nostalgic presentations. While some dishes shine, particularly the Nanyang Chicken Curry and the addictive kicap manis sauce on the shellfish, there's room for improvement in terms of consistency and value. That said, the free-flow Chendol and hearty Tingkat sets offer diners something both fun and familiar in the West.

We kicked off our meal with the whimsical Ice Bear Drink Series, a delightful quartet of beverages crowned with adorable bear-shaped ice sculptures that are as photogenic as they are refreshing. Each drink offers a unique flavour profile — Little Bear Iced Hong Kong Milk Tea ($4.90) delivers that classic, robust tea fragrance with silky smoothness; Little Bear Iced Lemon Tea ($4.90) is bright and tangy, offering a thirst-quenching citrus zing. For something more playful, the Pink Bear Soda ($5.90) is a sweet, strawberry-hued fizz, while the Dreamy Blue Bear Soda ($5.90) brings a tropical twist with its cooling blue curaçao-inspired base. These drinks aren’t just eye candy, they’re well-balanced and thoughtfully crafted for both taste and visual appeal.

Signature Snack Platter 3/5

To whet our appetites, we ordered the Signature Snack Platter ($8.80), a well-rounded selection of classic Hong Kong street bites perfect for sharing. The Spiced Chicken Wing Tips were savoury with a gentle heat, their skin lightly crisped and coated in a fragrant spice blend. The Curry Fish Balls, a nostalgic staple, were bouncy and soaked in a rich, aromatic curry gravy that clung to every bite. The highlight for us was the Signature Chee Cheong Fun in Mixed Sauce. It was silky smooth rice rolls, generously dressed in a medley of peanut and sweet sauces, that brought out an addictive balance of sweet and nutty flavours. Rounding out the platter were the Thai-Style Shrimp Rolls, crisp on the outside and packed with juicy prawn filling. We enjoyed the chee cheong fun so much that we ended up ordering a whole portion on its own.

It's a dish that feels like a warm hug, especially nostalgic for fans of old-school cha chaan teng fare.

The undisputed star of the menu is the Char Siew Rice ($10.90), a dish that truly lives up to its title as the No.1 Best-Selling Char Siew Rice in China. The char siew is masterfully roasted using a time-honoured technique developed by a Hong Kong roast meat specialist with over 40 years of experience. Each slice of pork boasts a glistening caramelised edge, with just the right balance of tender meat and smoky, melt-in-your-mouth fat. Nestled on a bed of fragrant, fluffy Wuchang rice, the dish is further elevated with two soft-fried eggs, their golden yolks oozing luxuriously into the rice and meat. What ties everything together is the signature in-house sauce, a deeply aromatic blend of 23 ingredients, including lemongrass, onions, and pork lard, that adds a rich, savoury complexity to every bite. It's a humble bowl but packed with layers of flavour and technique that speak to its cult following.

Dessert time! The Lava Ovaltine Toast ($7.90) is a sweet tooth's dream. It's crispy on the outside, toast overflowing with milk and condensed milk, topped with whipped cream, a dusting of Ovaltine powder, and crushed Oreo crumbs. It's messy, indulgent, and very satisfying.

Happines Lava Egg Waffles 4/5

End your meal on a gooey note with the Happiness Lava Egg Waffles ($3.80 for 2 pcs / $6.90 for 4 pcs). Each golden bubble bursts with creamy cheese for an umami kick, encased in a soft, eggy batter. It is a playful twist on the traditional Hong Kong street snack.

Keming Bing Sat brings a fun and flavourful slice of Hong Kong to Singapore, blending viral hits with time-honoured classics. While a couple of dishes could be refined, the char siew rice, chee cheong fun, and bear drinks alone make this newcomer well worth a visit. Perfect for casual gatherings, nostalgic bites, and of course plenty of Instagram moments.

9Toast Cafe @ Singapore Shopping Centre - Cosy Cafe Specialising in Korean-inspired Taro Lattes & Honey-Glazed Toasts

9Toast Cafe is a cosy cafe tucked along the exterior of the Singapore Shopping Centre, just a short stroll from Dhoby Ghaut MRT. Its signatures include Korean-inspired offerings, particularly its Taro Lattes and Honey-Glazed Toasts.

One specialty of 9Toast is its signature sweet potato paste prepared daily in-store. The paste is crafted from steamed sweet potatoes, transformed into a smooth, thick consistency without the use of artificial colouring, preservatives, or flavouring.

Purple Haze Latte 3/5

One of their signature drinks is the Purple Haze Latte ($7.90), which incorporates this sweet potato paste with milk. While it’s undoubtedly Instagram-worthy with its striking pastel tones, the flavour leans towards being overpowered by the milk.

Creamy Tamago Sando 3.5/5

9Toast also specialises in sandos made with white Shokupan bread, which features a honey-glazed exterior that adds sweetness to the savoury fillings.

We tried the Creamy Tamago Sando ($12.50), generously stuffed with egg mayo. While the portion was satisfying, the flavours fell slightly flat, and the texture leaned toward being a little dry, leaving us wishing for more balance.

For sides, we opted for the Mentaiko Fries ($8.50). The fries were fried to a golden crisp, providing a nice crunch. However, we were not big fans of the mentaiko sauce, which mainly had mayonnaise flavours in the spotlight.

Purple Haze 3.8/5

Moving on to their signature toast offerings, we sampled the Purple Haze Honey-Glazed Toast ($10.50). This dish features stretchy, oozy milk injeolmi sandwiched between slices of honey-coated bread. It is served with a scoop of their housemade sweet potato paste and a small pitcher of frothy milk for an extra touch.

While the paste's natural sweetness was pleasant and mild, the toast itself could be crispier. I would also recommend having this shared, as it could get quite heavy.
