Mama Pinto’s Kitchen – Homey Eurasian Private Dining That’s Hard to Come By

MamaPinto1

Private dining concepts continue to flourish, but Eurasian cuisine remains a rarity in Singapore’s dining landscape. That was precisely why the foodie gang decided to try Mama Pinto’s Kitchen, opting for a Eurasian-focused menu, though Mama Pinto does a mix of Eurasian and Peranakan dishes. At $90 for 7 dishes, it’s also one of the more value-for-money private dining menus we’ve come across.

MamaPinto3
Pomelo Salad 4/5

We started with the Pomelo Salad, a refreshing opener that whetted the appetite. The natural sweetness of the pomelo is lifted with a spicy lime dressing, then topped with nuts, garlic crisp and dried prawns for extra crunch and umami.

MamaPinto6
Stuffed Beancurd Puff 4.2/5

Next came the Stuffed Beancurd Puffs, packed with minced beef and potatoes. Deep-fried to a golden crisp, the exterior gives way to a soft, hearty centre. Pair it with the sambal kicap on the side for a spicy-sweet kick that elevates the bite.

MamaPinto11
Itek Teem 4.2/5

The Itek Teem was a standout soup course. A good version hinges on a well-built broth, and here it’s slow-cooked with pork ribs for added depth, along with duck and salted vegetables. Mama Pinto even marinates the duck with brandy. Diners can add an extra splash of brandy to the soup for more flavour dimension.

MamaPinto14
Eurasian Beef Semur 3/5

The Eurasian Beef Semur unfortunately leaned on the tougher side due to the cut used. Stewed with onions, potatoes and carrots, the flavours were promising; a better choice of beef would have made this dish shine.

MamaPinto2
Eurasian Kari Devil 4.8/5

The clear favourite of the night was the Eurasian Kari Devil. This spicy chicken curry, brightened with mustard and vinegar, features tender chicken pieces, potatoes, and chicken sausages. Bold, tangy and full-bodied — the table unanimously approved.

MamaPinto7E
Eurasian Pork Tambrinyu 4.5/5

The Eurasian Pork Tambrinyu, an Eurasian take on babi assam, was another enjoyable dish. Using both pork belly and pork ribs, diners get two different textures: thick slices of belly for melt-in-the-mouth richness, and rib meat that slips off the bone effortlessly.

MamaPinto9
Eurasian Sambal Ma Juliana Prawns 4.5/5

We wrapped up with the Sambal Ma Juliana Prawns with Petai. The sweetness of the prawns pairs well with the spicy, tangy tamarind-based sambal, while the petai adds a distinct aroma and bite.

We ended the meal with a comforting homemade Pineapple Tart served with a scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream. A simple yet satisfying finish, the warm tart and cold ice cream made a delightful pairing. I enjoyed it so much that I completely forgot to take a photo.

Cutlery Optional Private Dining - South Indian Flavours in a Homely Setting

CutleryOptional6

Our private dining exploration this round took us to Cutlery Optional Private Dining by Vasunthara Ramasamy, a contestant from MasterChef Singapore Season 2. Specialising in South Indian cuisine, her home dining concept stood out to us, as most private dining experiences in Singapore lean heavily towards Peranakan or Chinese cuisine. This was one we had been especially looking forward to.

CutleryOptional1
Plantain Chips & Chutney 3.8/5

We started the evening with Plantain Chips & Chutney, a light and crispy bite made addictive with the aromatic and spice-laden chutney. A simple yet impactful appetiser that teased the palate for what was to come.

CutleryOptional3
Coconut Toddy Thosai 4.5/5

CutleryOptional4
Malabar Chicken Curry 4.8/5

The Malabar Chicken Curry was a highlight. The chicken was tender, soaked in a robust curry brimming with depth and fragrance. What elevated the dish further was the freshly made Coconut Toddy Thosai, which was soft, fluffy, and carried a beautiful hint of coconut. Perfect for mopping up every last bit of curry.

CutleryOptional12
Spicy Fried Fish Fry with Coconut Topping 4/5

Next came the Spicy Fried Fish Fry, crisp on the outside and moist within. The addition of coconut topping added a welcome lift in both flavour and texture.

CutleryOptional8
Pork Fry 4.2/5

The Pork Fry reminded us of Chinese sio bak, yet with an unmistakable Indian twist. Crispy, succulent, and deeply savoury — it was addictive enough to keep going back for seconds.

CutleryOptional9
Prawn Green Mango Curry 5/5

The Prawn Green Mango Curry emerged as one of my favourites of the evening. Large, succulent prawns were paired with a mild, balanced curry. The fruity tang of green mangoes complemented the natural sweetness of the prawns, making this dish stand out.

CutleryOptional15
Mix Vegetable Thoran 4/5

To refresh the palate from the richer dishes, the Mix Vegetable Thoran was perfectly timed. Crunchy and light, it provided a nice balance to the heavier curries and roasts.

CutleryOptional16
Crab Roast 4.5/5

Another memorable dish was the Crab Roast. Unlike the familiar Singaporean renditions of chilli crab, black pepper crab, or salted egg yolk crab, Vasunthara’s version showcased a spice-forward, aromatic profile that paired beautifully with the crab’s sweetness. A refreshing take that still held its own against our beloved local styles.

CutleryOptional19
Mango Ice Cream 4.2/5

The meal concluded with Mango Ice Cream. Bursting with the intensity of ripe mangoes, it was refreshing and vibrant. It's almost like eating the fruit itself. A fitting end to a flavourful journey.

CutleryOptional5

Cutlery Optional Private Dining is a rare gem in Singapore’s private dining landscape, offering authentic South Indian flavours with personal touches from Vasunthara. It’s a feast that bridges familiarity and discovery, making it an experience well worth seeking out.

Sampanman Kelong @ Jurong Point - Opens Second Outlet in The West with Free-Flow Chendol and Exclusive Dishes

SampanmanJurongPoint12

Following its debut at Jewel Changi Airport, Sampanman Kelong has cast its nets westward with the opening of its second outlet at Jurong Point. This new branch offers several exclusive items, including free-flow Chendol and outlet-only dishes, while the flagship at Jewel has also undergone a recent menu refresh.

SampanmanJurongPoint6

SampanmanJurongPoint9
Grilled Shellfish Sampan 3/5

A highlight of our visit was the Grilled Shellfish Sampan ($39). It came in a vibrant, rustic presentation served atop a wooden boat. The dish features an enticing mix of flower clams, prawns, and scallops, all tossed in a sweet and mildly spicy kicap manis sauce that's rich, sticky, and thoroughly addictive. While the sauce elevated the seafood, the portion was underwhelming, both in terms of quality and quantity, especially for its price point.

SampanmanJurongPoint13
Tingkat

To round out our meal, we added on the Tingkat set — available in 2-Tier ($14) or 3-Tier ($20) options. We chose the 3-Tier set, which allowed us to select one item each from the rice, vegetable, and meat categories for a satisfying and balanced meal.

SampanmanJurongPoint28
Blue Pea Rice 4/5

From the rice options — which also include Jasmine White Rice and Egg Fried Rice — we went with the Blue Pea Rice. It was nicely steamed, lightly aromatic, and added a touch of visual appeal to the tingkat.

SampanmanJurongPoint22
Stir-Fried Sweet Potato Leaves 3/5

For vegetables, we opted for the Stir-Fried Sweet Potato Leaves. While the greens were tender and well-cooked, the sambal leaned a little too sweet, lacking the fiery punch I had hoped for. Moreover, the vegetables were chopped into small pieces, which took away from the textural enjoyment. Other options include Stir-Fried French Beans and Spicy Egg Sambal.

SampanmanJurongPoint24
Nanyang Chicken Curry 4.2/5

The Nanyang Chicken Curry was the standout among the tingkat selections. The chicken was succulent and tender, and the curry sauce was rich, lemak, and fragrant. It was a well-executed, comforting dish. Other available proteins include Berempah Fried Chicken and Fried Mid Wing.

SampanmanJurongPoint30

SampanmanJurongPoint35
Butter & Gula Melaka Toast 3/5

For something sweet, I went off the beaten track and tried the Butter & Gula Melaka Toast ($2.90). The toast had a lovely charred exterior with a soft, fluffy interior. Unfortunately, the gula melaka spread lacked the depth and smoky aroma typically associated with high-quality palm sugar. It leaned more towards one-dimensional sweetness, which made it less memorable.

Sampanman Kelong continues to offer a kampung-inspired seafood experience in the modern mall setting, with creative local twists and nostalgic presentations. While some dishes shine, particularly the Nanyang Chicken Curry and the addictive kicap manis sauce on the shellfish, there's room for improvement in terms of consistency and value. That said, the free-flow Chendol and hearty Tingkat sets offer diners something both fun and familiar in the West.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

SanSara @ Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel - Discover Awadhi Cuisine with Influences from North India

IMG_1836

It's been a year since SanSara joined the lineup of Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel restaurants, showcasing the best of Awadhi cuisine with influences from North India.

IMG_1827
Non-Vegetarian Set Menu 4/5

It is celebrating this special milestone with a limited-time 'A Regal Lucknowi Feast' available from 4 to 17 October and 11 to 30 November 2024. The feast is available in both non-vegetarian and vegetarian options.

IMG_1819
Murgh Badami Shorba

Our Non-Vegetarian Menu ($78 per pax) began with Murgh Badami Shorba, a hearty chicken broth. Its garlicky and peppery undertones were reminiscent of a well-seasoned bak kut teh.

IMG_1822
Murgh Jahan-ara, Jhinga Dum Nisha

For appetisers, we were treated to the Murgh Jahan-ara, a tender chicken dish richly marinated in a saffron-spiced yoghurt, blending garlic, green chilli, and cardamom powder for a well-balanced flavour.

Alongside, the Jhinga Dum Nisha, a grilled tiger prawn, boasted a subtly spiced cardamom profile with an additional peppery kick. The tangy yoghurt dressings enhanced both dishes with a refreshing contrast.

IMG_1836

IMG_1839
Main Course

The Main Course featured a fun spread of four distinctive curries served with fluffy basmati rice. These included Murgh Rezala, a creamy chicken curry with mint and almonds, and Gosht Shahi Pasanda, a fragrant lamb curry featuring Mathania chilli and garam masala.

The Dhuandhar Dum Aloo had baby potatoes simmered in a buttery yoghurt sauce, while the Nawabi Dal had yellow lentil curry with saffron and cream.

IMG_1842
Sheermal Roti, Warqi Paratha

Accompanying the curries were two types of freshly made bread - Sheermal Roti and Warqi Paratha. They were crisp and flaky, perfect for scooping up the rich curries. Our table quickly polished off the basket.

IMG_1847
Chawal Gulab Ka Kheer

The dessert was Chawal Gulab Ka Kheer, a rose-scented rice pudding topped with cashews, pistachios, and almonds. While the combination of fragrant rose petals and nuts was intriguing, the dish felt a bit heavy after the indulgent meal. I personally would prefer a lighter dessert to complement.

Café Barco @ Kaki Bukit - New Japanese-Western Fusion Cafe by Wunderfolks

IMG_6980

Wunderfolks, which started as a home-based business in 2020, gained popularity for its tarts in various flavours.

IMG_6972

Building on its success, the brand expanded beyond its physical stores and ventured into a new concept with the opening of Café Barco, a Japanese-Western fusion café in Kaki Bukit. It is conveniently situated within the Techview Building and just a short walk from Kaki Bukit MRT Station.

IMG_6974
Iced Matcha Latte 3/5

Our meal began with the Iced Matcha Latte. We wished it had a stronger matcha flavour, as the drink leaned much more towards the milky side.

IMG_6975
Cold Tofu 3/5

We had the Cold Tofu ($6), which is on the light side. It is served with a Japanese sesame dressing and topped with spring onions, nori, and sesame seeds.

IMG_6985
Corn Croquette 3.5/5

Next, we tried the Corn Croquette ($8), which had a crunchy exterior and creamy interior. It was served with a sweet-tasting Barco brown sauce.

IMG_6982
Tater Tots 3.5/5

The Tater Tots ($7) were well-fried and crispy but felt a bit plain. A bit of seasoning or a dipping sauce would have elevated this dish.

IMG_6978
Mentaiko Egg Mayo Sando 4.2/5

The Mentaiko Egg Mayo Sando ($8.80) was a delightful treat. The creamy mentaiko egg mayo mix was nicely balanced and not overly rich. It was sandwiched between lightly toasted, fluffy bread. The tobiko sprinkled on top added a nice savoury pop to each bite.

IMG_6979
Big Breakfast 4/5

A crowd favourite at Café Barco is the Big Breakfast ($14), a classic brunch dish featuring scrambled eggs, sautéed mushrooms, vine tomatoes, a hash brown, mesclun salad, and bread. While it didn't break any new ground, it was decently executed.

IMG_6983

IMG_6984
Curry Chicken Katsu Don 4.2/5

Among the mains, our top pick was the Curry Chicken Katsu Don ($14.80). The dish featured slices of crunchy, well-seasoned chicken katsu served on a bed of Japanese rice and a flavourful Japanese curry with potato and carrot chunks. The katsu remained tender.

IMG_6986

IMG_6987
Mentaiko Pasta with Salmon 3.5/5

On the other hand, despite its popularity, the Mentaiko Pasta with Salmon ($18.80) fell short of expectations. We found the dish to be more creamy than mentaiko-flavoured, leaving us wishing for a stronger mentaiko presence to better complement the linguine, grilled salmon, onsen egg, and tobiko.

IMG_6973

For dessert, Café Barco offers an array of their signature Tarts alongside other pastries. Additionally, the café stocks canelés from Flourcrafts, which you can pre-order for pickup or purchase on the spot.
