Zhup Zhup @ MacPherson Road - New Premium Upgrade Jumbo Series

IMG_8788

Prawn noodle lovers would likely be familiar with Zhup Zhup at Macpherson, formerly known as One Prawn & Co. Led by Chef Gwyneth Ang, who brings a wealth of experience from several acclaimed restaurants, the eatery has built a name for itself with its robust, prawn-rich broth.

IMG_8799

We have had Zhup Zhup a couple of times before. They've now introduced a new premium upgrade - the Jumbo Series, which features tiger prawns in place of the usual prawns. These larger, meatier crustaceans lend an extra layer of natural sweetness to the broth, complemented by upsized portions. To complement their new offerings, they've also launched a drinks menu featuring house-brewed teas and sodas.

IMG_8832

' The coffee shop setting can get rather warm and humid on sunny days, but the heat doesn’t seem to deter the steady stream of diners eager for a bowl of their signature prawn noodles.

Five Fortune Jumbo Prawn 4.5/5

We started with the Five Fortune Jumbo Prawn ($30), which arrived bubbling hot in a claypot straight off the stove, a thoughtful touch that kept the broth warm throughout.

IMG_8810

The soup was intensely sweet, packed with the essence of the prawns. It features tiger prawns, pork ribs, lala clams, shabu pork slices, and tobiko prawn balls.

IMG_8796

For the noodles, diners can select from yellow noodles, thick beehoon, thin beehoon, or kway teow. We opted for a mix of yellow noodles and thick beehoon, tossed in their house-made sambal, lard, and shallot oil. We appreciated how the chilli here wasn’t that intense, which balanced out with the soup.

IMG_8804

If you prefer a specific pairing of toppings, other combinations are also available, such as Jumbo Prawn & Prawn Ball ($26), Jumbo Prawn & Lala ($26), or All Jumbo Prawn ($26).

Jumbo Prawn Paofan 4.2/5

Next, we tried the Jumbo Prawn Paofan ($42), a portion generous enough for two. Tiger prawns and lala infused the rice broth with deep seafood flavours, topped with crispy fried egg floss for texture. Personally, I found the prawn noodle broth more balanced, as this paofan leaned extremely rich. If you are a fan of stronger flavours, this would be up your alley.

IMG_8821

There’s also a single-portion Seafood Paofan ($18) available, though that version uses regular prawns.

The last signature dish you might want to try is the Jumbo Prawn Hokkien Mee ($38), also designed to feed up to two. A smaller portion of Seafood Paofan for one pax is also available, at $18, but this version uses the normal-sized prawns instead.

Har Cheong Gai 4.2/5

For sides, the Har Cheong Gai ($11) is well worth a try. The mid-joint wings were well marinated, fried to a satisfying crunch, and juicy within.

One Prawn & Co @ Macpherson - Robust Prawn Noodles, Seafood Paofan and Hokkien Mee Served in Sizzling Claypots, Recognised by Michelin Bib Gourmand

IMG_5629

One Prawn & Co started as a hawker stall in Golden Mile Food Centre. It has steadily grown to be recognised by Michelin Bib Gourmand for its signature Prawn Noodles and owning its own modern coffeeshop space along Macpherson Road.

IMG_4878 (2)

Previously only available in the daytime, the eatery has finally now made the decision to offer their signature dishes in the evenings as well, from 11am to 9pm daily, apart from Mondays. This comes after consistent requests from their regular diners.

Their star Prawn Noodles use a painstakingly prepared broth that goes through non-stop boiling of prawn heads and pork bones for over 20 hours. You can imagine how thick and robust that would be!

IMG_4884 (2)

Their other seasonal dishes, such as the Claypot Hokkien Mee and Seafood Paofan, are also made permanent on their menu.

IMG_5626
Lobster Paofan 4.8/5

Fit for 2, the Lobster Paofan ($40) was served up bubbling hot with a sizable lobster. The lobster meat was thoughtfully deshelled and added to the rice for convenience. The broth base here used the same as their Prawn Noodles and was utterly flavourful and rich, yet not overwhelming. The rice was cooked well, paired with crispy rice and fried egg floss.

For a smaller and more affordable portion, diners can opt for the Scallop Paofan at $10.

IMG_5632
Claypot Hokkien Mee 4.5/5

The Claypot Hokkien Mee ($14) has its ingredients stir-fried before marrying with the robust prawn broth. Both the prawns and clams were fresh and sweet.

IMG_5630

It looked very saucy at first, but the claypot heat allowed the sauce to be soaked up perfectly, with each strand of noodle coated with the fragrant pork lard-laden mix.

IMG_5631
Har Cheong Gai 4.5/5

I always enjoy Har Cheong Gai ($2.50/piece), and One Prawn & Co does an excellent rendition - crunchy skin, juicy meat and not greasy.

One Prawn & Co @ MacPherson Road - Brand New 12-Course Seafood Grill Dinner Situated In A Coffee Shop

IMG_8139

One Prawn & Co by Chef Gwyneth Ang is best known for its robust prawn noodle claypot soup, recognised by the Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2022. While retaining its signature offering in the day, Chef Gwyneth wants to spice things up by transforming her coffee shop in MacPherson into a space to offer her brand new 12-Course Seafood Grill Dinner at night. The team carefully picks and procures all seafood ingredients, and dietary restrictions can be highlighted prior.

IMG_8134

Made available from 21 February 2023, the seafood-focused menu is set at $128 per pax with a minimum of 2 to dine, with the choice of a top-up of $30 per pax for the free flow sake of the day. Diners can also opt for curated seasonal sakes that are rotated bi-monthly or other alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

IMG_8135
Amaebi

To start off our dinner, we had an amuse-bouche of Amaebi. Topped on a crisp rice flower are avocado, tomatoes and sweet amaebi.

IMG_8136
Starters

Next was a 4-item starter: a fresh Hyogo Oyster paired with mignonette granita, cured Amberjack with soy and crisp seaweed, poached White Shrimp with coconut and garam masala, and Soft Shell Crab in tempura style with a unique choice of kicap manis.

Our favourite was the White Shrimp for the harmonious blend of flavours - especially the choice of garam masala gave it a fragrant touch of heat.

IMG_8137
Maitake Mushrooms on Bed of Burnt Barley Risotto 4.2/5

Moving on to the sharing plates, the Maitake Mushrooms impressed me with their earthiness and the great bite from the bed of burnt barley risotto underneath. We enjoyed this but wished the portion was bigger and the smokiness could come through a tad more.

IMG_8138
Squid ‘Noodles’ with Salsa Verde, Black Olives 4.5/5

This Squid 'Noodles' with Salsa Verde had appetising salsa verde paired with squid noodles carrying a lovely smokiness. The zestiness, tanginess and hint of spice were perfect.

IMG_8140
Scottish King Scallop with XO Chilli Jam 4.8/5

One of our favourites for the night was the Scottish King Scallop with XO Chilli Jam. While the king scallop was plump, tender and smokey, the flavour-packed XO chilli jam stole the show for us. It came in a generous portion of scallop shreds that carried just the right kick of spice. I would be the first to join the queue if Chef Gwyneth decides to sell this addictive chilli jam by the bottle!

IMG_8141
Pork with Apple Compote 3.5/5

The highlight for proteins was the Onglet, a hanging tender steak with sunchoke cream and chives. As we don't take beef, it was replaced with Pork. Even though the grilled pork's texture was spot on, the seasoning was too salty.

IMG_8142
Charcoal Grilled Turbot with Garlic Brown Butter and Capers 4.2/5

We were eyeing the Turbot as soon as Chef Gwyneth started grilling it over the bed of charcoal. The resulting fish meat was light, tender and flaky, paired with a heavier mix of garlic brown butter and capers. The unassuming pickled papaya salad on the side provided a contrasting acidity which balanced the overall dish.

IMG_8143
Abalone Pao Fan 4.8/5

We were already quite full at this point of the meal but still wiped the Abalone Pao Fan clean. The dish is served in a claypot. One Prawn & Co's signature prawn bisque served as the base, with baby abalones, egg floss, rice puffs and rice added on. The rice puffs lost their crunchiness quickly, but the rich and hearty broth was more than satisfying.

IMG_8144

IMG_8145
Desserts

Dessert was a combination of Seasonal Fruits and Mini Ice Cream cones with burnt white chocolate ice cream. We appreciate the special attention down to the fruits, which were extremely sweet.

Ho Jia Bo? Fishball Minced Meat Noodle @ Circuit Road Food Centre

HoJiaBo9

The first thing I noticed of Ho Jia Bo? Fishball Minced Meat Noodle at Circuit Road Food Centre is its interesting name. It is like asking their customer, is our noodles good? During my visit, the stall is man by a friendly middle aged lady. She is both the cook and cashier. Hence be prepared to wait for your bowl of noodle.

HoJiaBo2
Fishball Minced Meat Noodle Dry 3.8/5

HoJiaBo6

I really appreciate the stall for separating the ingredients from the noodle. The Fishball Minced Meat Noodle Dry ($3) comes with fishcakes, fishballs and minced pork. The mee pok was cooked to al dente with a springy bite to it. The chilli sauce was tossed with the mee pok unfortunately lacked depth and it probably requires vinegar to boast the whole dimension of the bowl of noodle.

HoJiaBo10
Mushroom Minced Meat Dry 4/5

HoJiaBo17

Like the fishball minced meat noodle dry, the Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle Dry ($3.50) comes with the ingredients and noodle served separately. The noodle is topped with minced pork and mushroom while the soup comes with lean pork slices, pig liver and meatballs. I personally preferred this over the fishball minced meat noodle because of the addition of mushroom. Even the soup seemed to taste more delicious, flavoured by the ingredients in it.

IMG_1894

While I felt that the noodles here probably needed the addition of vinegar to give the bowl of noodle a lift in flavour, I do applaud the generous serving of ingredients that comes with the comforting bowl of noodle for a mere $3-$3.50.

Ghim Guan Fried Oyster @ Circuit Road Food Centre - Messy But Crispy Plate of Goodness

GhimGuanFriedOyster2

With the opening of the Downtime Line 3, we can now easily visit Circuit Road Food Centre which is just around 5 minutes walk from Mattar MRT station. One of the many stalls I visited was Ghim Guan Fried Oyster. The stall only operates in the evening, selling fried oyster, oyster omelette and fried carrot cake.

GhimGuanFriedOyster11
Fried Oyster 3.8/5

Run by an old couple probably in their late 50s to 60s, the uncle does the cooking while the auntie is responsible for taking the orders. Placed your order and inform the auntie your table number, and the food will be served to you.

GhimGuanFriedOyster5

The fried oyster here is priced from $4 to $10. I order the $6 portion. The version here is the very crispy type. When you bite into the fried batter, you can hear the biscuity sound ringing in your ears. Because it is fried until so crispy, you also don't get that greasiness on the palate.

GhimGuanFriedOyster13

A good plate of fried oyster or orh luak requires a good chilli sauce to go with it. It has to be spicy and tangy to provide that punch and zestiness to the whole enjoyment of the fried goodness. While it meets the requirement but I think it can be more piquant.

IMG_1896

I personally am not a big fan of the crispy type fried oyster but I am sure there are fans who will enjoy it. However I must admit this is probably the most crispy fried oyster I have ever eaten. Do note that the stall only opens in the evening.
