Straits Cafe @ Rendezvous Grand Hotel Singapore

IMG_1182ed

For a limited period from 22 April to 12 May 2013, Straits Café at Rendezvous Grand Hotel Singapore has invited Korean guest Chef Kim Hyun Jung from Lotte World to present A Taste of Korea as part of its International buffet.

IMG_1181ed

IMG_1179ed

There are already quite a number of Korean restaurants in Singapore and most of us are rather familiar with Korean cuisine. Nevertheless, it is still worthwhile to visit Straits Cafe for their buffet as some of the Korean dishes prepared by Chef Kim Hyun Jung is not commonly served in local Korean restaurant.

IMG_1185ed
Banchan

Banchan (side dishes) is like a staple of Korean cuisine. At A Taste of Korea buffet, the spread also offers some side dishes such as Zucchini, Bean Sprouts, Kimchi and Vermicelli. My favourite among the side dishes is the kimchi.

IMG_1187ed
Korean Ginseng Soup 4/5

This is quite interesting for my limited knowledge of Korean cuisine. The Korean Ginseng Soup exactly has rice in it and it felt like having a bowl of porridge instead of a bowl of soup. The hearty bowl of Korean Ginseng Soup was very comforting with ingredients such as chicken, water chestnut and ginseng. One can also add a pinch of sea salt to enhance the flavour further.

IMG_1194ed
Seabass and Zucchini Pancakes 3.5/4

I quite enjoy the Seabass and Zucchini Pancakes which has a nice thin coat of flour and egg batter. It was rather bland if eaten without sauces. The star was the dipping soy sauce that made the pancakes shone, accentuating the flavour and dimension of the dish.

IMG_1195ed
Hot Spicy Chicken 3/5

Resembling our local curry chicken, the Korean version of Hot Spicy Chicken was rather mild and fiery free to the local palate.

IMG_1200ed
Beef Ribs 4.2/5

The thinly sliced prime Beef Ribs was beautiful marinated and grilled to perfection. It was succulent and tender with a nice thin layer of fats. Probably the favourite among the diners as I noticed a couple of us went for more helpings of the beef ribs.

IMG_1202ed
Rice Cake Roll with Honey Citron Tea 3/5

The selection of Rice Cake Rolls was Mustard (yellow), Cinnamon (Brown) and Green Tea (green). The chewy texture was quite enjoyable and the Honey Citron Tea was perfect to wash it down and cleanse the palate.

IMG_1198ed
Laksa 4.5/5

Mentioned earlier, A Taste of Korea is just part of the International Buffet spread at Straits Cafe. Not to be missed is the award winning Laksa. In fact it was so good that Daniel has 2 bowls of it. Definitely a must try at Straits Cafe.

If you love buffet and enjoy Korean cuisine, head down to Straits Cafe at Rendezvous Grand Hotel Singapore from 22 April to 12 May 2013 to have a taste of authentic Korean cuisine.

Buffet Lunch: $42++ per adult (Mon-Sat)
Buffet Dinner: $50++ per adult (Mon-Thu)

Nam Hwa Chong (Ah Chew) Fish Head Steamboat Corner (亚秋南华昌鱼头炉) @ Jalan Sultan

IMG_0946ed
Fish Head Steamboat 4.5/5

My all time favourite fish steamboat place is at Nam Hwa Chong (Ah Chew) Fish Head Steamboat Corner (亚秋南华昌鱼头炉) at the corner of Jalan Sultan and North Bridge Road. This is probably the oldest restaurant in Singapore since 1927. It is said by many that they are the creator of the Teochew Fish Head Steamboat. Now run by the 3rd generation, the restaurant still continues to use charcoal for their traditional Teochew Fish Head Steamboat that comes with slurp worthy rich and sweet tastes. For the fish, grouper and promfret are more popular with the patrons.

IMG_0955ed
Oyster Omelette 3/5

Beside Fish Head Steamboat, the restaurant also serves some delectable Zi Char dishes. The Oyster Omelette was rather pedestrian. The oysters were also rather small.

IMG_0951ed
Prawn Paste Chicken Wings 3/5

The Prawn Paste Chicken Wings were deep fried to a nice golden brown. However it was lacking the pungent prawn paste taste. This is the milder version of the prawn paste chicken wings which suit those who dislike the acquire prawn paste taste.

IMG_0949ed
Stir Fried Sambal Tapiocal Leaves 4/5

The Stir Fried Sambal Tapiocal Leaves was pretty good. It was actually not too spicy but fragrant enough, not overcooked with a nice crunchiness to it.

IMG_0952ed
Prawn Roll 4/5

I like the Prawn Roll too. They were huge and packed with flavourful filling with occasional crunchy bites of water chestnuts.

Thank you Karen, Maureen and Kai for the birthday dinner treat.

The Clan Restaurant @ Bukit Pasoh (Outram)

IMG_0921ed

For my birthday celebration with my girlfriend this year, I suggested The Clan Restaurant which is nearby our staycation at PARKROYAL on Pickering. The 2 storey restaurant is nestled inside a 100 over years old building that is also The GAN Clan Association. The restaurant interior is pretty dark so pardon me for the poor quality photos. I didn't feel good using my flash as the table were quite close to one another not to mention the dimly lit environment. Upon sitting down, we were presented with the 6 course dinner set menu ($63.80++ per pax). I thought this is different from the usual practice of restaurants where they prefer you to order from their ala carte menu as the profit margin is higher. Nevertheless ala carte menu is available on request. After comparing the 2 menus, we decided to go for the diner set which is more value for money.

IMG_0902ed
Chef Starter 4/5

Before starting our 6 course meal, we were give watermelon shooter served in a test tube to whet our appetite. The Chef Starter is the only item on the menu that were not given a choice. The Chef Starter comprised of a trio which for me the most memorable was the pan seared scallop with asparagus and truffle foam.

IMG_0905ed
Oyster 3 Ways 3.5/5

For the cold dish there were 4 choices. My partner had the Alaskan King Crab with Homemade Karashi Dressing while I had the Oyster 3 Ways. The oysters were fresh and fat. Among the 3 styles, my favourite was the oyster shooter with quail egg. Initially I was afraid that the rawness will be too much for me to stomach but there was an interesting zesty sauce that brought it together.

IMG_0910ed
Deep Fried Foie Gras 3/5

Out of the 5 choices available for the Side Dish, my partner had the Kurobuta Pork Belly confit with Pork Cracker & Passion Fruit Sauce while I tried the Deep Fried Foie Gras, Balsamico Reduction & Cheese Focaccia. I didn't quite enjoyed this dish. I thought the foie gras lost its shine in the dish and I felt like having deep fried wanton with minced pork filling.

IMG_0911ed
Crab Bisque Cappuccino 4.2/5

Next for the soup which comes with another 4 choices, my partner had the Miso with Yuzu Essence while I had the Crab Bisque Cappuccino w Truffle Foam & Prawn Twister. Love the presentation as well as the richness and robustness of the flavours.

IMG_0913ed
Kurobuta Pork Jawl 4.2/5

For the Main, there are 6 choices. My partner had the popular 48 Hours Beef Short Ribs on Hoba Leaf with  Madeira Sauce on Lava Stone and I had the Kurobuta Pork Jawl in Pistachio Puree with Pickled Zucchini & 64 Degree Egg Yolk. The pork cheek was fork tender with a flavourful encrusting and nicely balanced with the egg yolk coating.

You may wonder where is my sixth course, Dessert? Well we did have it but it was served after a long wait and I forgot to take photo of it. Anyway there are 5 choices and we had the Chocolate Lava with Raspberry & Homemade Gelato and Madeira Cheese Panna Cotta.

Will I ever come back to the restaurant again? Yes I will. Although we had the set menu, there are at least 4 choices for each course. Not only value for money the food is meticulous and exquisite. The service is also top notch except for the moment of lapse of our dessert. I am not complaining as I was given a 20% discount for the mistake.

Truffs @ Telok Ayer

IMG_0769ed

After our restaurant week's lunch at Gunther's French Modern Cuisine and ice cream at Tom's PaletteNicole, Kimberley and me ended up at Truffs in Telok Ayer. Our initial plan was to check out Sophie Bakery but it was closed for maintenance. We were really disappointed as we have braved the hot soaring sun walking from Raffles Place to Telok Ayer. There was a moment of emptiness in us until Kimberley suggested Truffs which is just a few steps away.

Thank god we have chocolate to cheer us up after the disappointment at Sophie Bakery (closed for maintenance). Truff is located on the second floor on the same stretch of shophouses with Sophie Bakery but a couple of door steps away. Kimberley knows about this place because she bought her boyfriend's birthday cake from Truffs but back then it was only a takeaway kiosk. Truffs has since expanded with a sit down area cum gallery where patrons can enjoy their drinks and indulge in their signature cakes and tarts.

IMG_0780ed
Ice Chocolate 4.2/5 Hot Chocolate 4.2/5

I think this is probably one of the best chocolate beverage I ever have in Singapore. I had the Hot Chocolate ($6.50) while the ladies had the Ice Chocolate ($7.50). The chocolate beverages were velvety, rich but yet not too sweet. The ice chocolate even comes with dark chocolate bits in it.

IMG_0774ed
Chocolate Cake 4.5/5

I am grateful that Truffs now has a café area so I got a chance to savour the delicious Chocolate Cake ($11 per slice). When they didn't have the café area, one needs to buy the whole cake in order to taste this delicious chocolate cake. The chocolate cake was light, fluffy and spongy while the ganache was rich but not too sweet. It had a harmonised balance that I didn't feel sick finishing it.

IMG_0773ed
Earl Grey Chocolate Tart 4/5

The tart at Truffs does not have a bottom shell but replaced with a crumbly crusts. The tart comes in either Earl Grey or Espresso infused chocolate ganache. We tried the Earl Grey Chocolate Tart ($7) which has a brilliant combination of the intense and velvety tea infused chocolate ganache.

Truffs is definitely a chocolate heaven for chocolate lovers for their exquisite truffles, cakes and tarts. Although the café area is rather spacious, I like the fact that the owner did not fill up the space with more tables and seats to make more profit. The café area has a quiet and laid back charm that I can imagine myself relaxing, reading a book while sipping a cup of hot chocolate.

Tom's Palette @ Shaw Leisure Gallery

IMG_0760ed

After our restaurant week's lunch at Gunther's French Modern Cuisine, Nicole, Kimberley and me took a leisure stroll over to Tom's Palette at Shaw Leisure Gallery to have some ice cream. Kimberley is rather excited because she has always wanted to check out this place. I am happy that I brought them to Tom's Palette and I also can't wait to try the Salted Egg Yolk ice cream again since my last visit back in July 2012.

IMG_0765ed

We went for a cup each with 2 flavours. This is the small size cup and I realized the price has increased by 20 cents since my last visit. A small size cup costs $3.20 now while the medium is $4.20 and large at $5.20. Do check with them or visit their website for the 10% discount given to selected tertiary students, you just need to flash your student card at the point of payment.

IMG_0762ed
Salted Egg Yolk and Milk 4/5

All of us ordered the Salted Egg Yolk and another flavour of our liking. The salted egg yolk ice cream was still as good, loving that grainy texture that comes along with the familiar salt egg yolk taste. Besides the salted egg yolk flavour, I had the Milk flavour which I didn't get to try in my previous visit. The Milk flavour was pretty normal but I enjoyed the chocolate chunks and nuts to give the ice cream an enjoyable bites to it.

IMG_0764ed
Salted Egg Yolk and Candy Crush

There are many innovative flavours at Tom's Palette and each month it will also features an unique flavours. One of the unique flavor. Nicole tried was the Candy Crush flavour. It is actually lemon sorbet ice cream with crushed candies. A unique light and refreshing with crushed candies bites.

Azur @ Crowne Plaza Changi Airport

IMG_1063ed

My previous visit to Azur was a couple of years ago for a corporate lunch when Crowne Plaza Changi Airport was newly built. I remembered the buffet spread was quite extensive showcasing some of the best local favourites. I am back at the Azur at Crowne Plaza Changi Airport to try out their new Weekend Changi Brunch menu. Azur has brought together the best of the East and West in a refreshed menu of the popular Weekend Changi Brunch featuring local and international cuisines.

IMG_1073ed
German Sausages with Juniper Berry Sauerkraut and Beef Jus 4.5/5

One of the memorable items I tried at the brunch buffet is the German Sausages with Juniper Berry Sauerkraut and Beef Jus. The highlight for me is the sauerkraut, this is a must have combination for eating sausages. Some restaurants only served sausages with mustard. I am delight that Azur took the effort to prepare the juniper berry sauerkraut.

IMG_1081ed
Baked Mussels with Aioli Herb 4.2/5

You will have to try the Baked Mussels with Aioli Herb. They were big and juicy, baked with the flavoursome aioli herb.

IMG_1083ed
Pan Seared Fish Fillet with Yuzu Orange Sauce 3/5

The Pan Seared Fish Fillet was cooked in a delectable Yuzu Orange Sauce. The moist fish was further lifted and enhanced by the tangy sauce.

IMG_1084ed
Roasted Chicken with Homemade Chilli Sauce 3/5

The Roasted Chicken with Homemade Chilli Sauce was pretty good, succulent and flavourful. Oh the chilli sauce was not spicy at all so need not worry if you can't take spicy.

IMG_1092ed
Marinated Philippines Clams with White Wine and Shallots 4/5

I have always like Philippines Clams because they are quite sweet. Love the version by Azur marinated with white wine and shallots which was very addictive.

IMG_1094ed
Rojak 4/5

For a taste of the local hawker favourites, one can Do-It-Yourself at the Rojak counter adding in the eclectic mix of ingredients and mixed it up with the pungent shrimp paste and topped with grounded peanuts.

IMG_1097ed
Prawn Noodles 3/5

The installment of the of Weekend Changi Brunch also features the Prawn Noodles from the Local Delight Noodles Bar. A good change from the usual Laksa but I still thought the latter is still a better representation of the local favourite.

IMG_1091ed
Cold Dishes

I love the array of Asian and Western food at Azur Weekend Changi Brunch but I don't have a huge stomach for all the delectable food. I went for 3 rounds only while the others were shared with my dining partners. Started with some cold dishes and my favourite on the plate was the oysters and crab.

IMG_1101ed
Cooked Food

From the cooked food selections, my favourite went to the German sausages, Baked Mussels and Steak.

IMG_1103ed
Dessert

Definitely we need to wrap up the sumptuous lunch with a round of sweetness from the dessert section.

IMG_1077ed

IMG_1105ed

If you like the local version of dessert, you can try creating your own icy version of Ice Kachang and pile it with your favourite condiments, syrups and carnation milk for a decadent sweet treat.
