Reunions Of Joy And Prosperity At Wan Hao, Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel

WanHaoCNY1

Ring in the Lunar New Year with grand celebrations overflowing with happiness, abundance and prosperity at Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant, Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel. Award-winning Executive Chef Brian Wong has crafted set menus for the occasions, starting from $108.80++ per person (4 to 8 persons) to $2088++ per 10 persons

A must have at every reunion dinner is the Yu Sheng. Wan Hao has come up with six different renditions of Yu Sheng, catering to all taste buds. Worth noting is the substitution of the usual sweet plum sauce with homemade Kumquat sauce, which is not too sweet, refreshing with a zesty twist. We had the Peak of Prosperity Yu Sheng ($268++ Large) featuring lobster, scallop, tuna, salmon and caviar yu sheng with kumquat sauce.

Braised Bird's Nest 4.5/5

Lining the stomach before the great feast, is the Braised Bird's Nest with Assorted Dried Seafood Broth and Golden Superior Stock. I could taste the richness of the seafood broth, after long hours of boiling and extracting the essence. This is further sweeten with the addition of pumpkin and hence the orangey appearance.

WanHaoCNY17
Deep Fried Lobster 3.5/5

Next is the Deep Fried Lobster with Yuzu Mayonnaise and Broccoli. Coated in a light batter, I could still taste the sweetness of the bouncy lobster within. This is complemented by the yuzu mayonnaise sauce. I thought if the lobster is poached, it may go even better with the sauce.

Braised U.S. Short Ribs 4.2/5

The Braised U.S. Short Ribs literally melted in the mouth and it is paired excellently with the Japanese light soya sauce. A well balance dish, allowing the short ribs to shine.

WanHaoCNY22
Deep Fried Cod Fish with Celery Sauce 4.5/5

My eyes brightened up when the accompanying celery sauce of the Deep Fried Cod Fish touched my taste buds. It is a bit sweet and tangy, resembling a bit like Mei Cai. It is very appetising and it goes very well with the buttery and fatty cod fish.

WanHaoCNY25
Crispy Pork Trotter with Wolfberry Sauce 3/5

Another deep fried dish on the menu is the Crispy Pork Trotter with Wolfberry Sauce. Unfortunately this dish falls short from the other dishes we had. While the appearance is appealing, the taste did not live up to the expectation. Even the wolfberry sauce did not manage to lift the dish.

WanHaoCNY12
Wan Hao's Imperial Pot of Prosperity Pen Cai 4.5/5

The Wan Hao's Imperial Pot of Prosperity Pen Cai ($1088 Large / $688 Small) features an amalgamation of 14 deluxe ingredients from the land and sea, such as crispy oyster, braised Irish duck, abalone, fish maw and pig trotter. The pot of gourmet delicacy is braised for hours in a rich and flavourful stock boasting Chinese ham, old chicken, scallop and more.

Chilled Lemongrass Jelly with Lemon Sorbet 4/5

Wrapping up our dinner is the Chilled Lemongrass Jelly with Lemon Sorbet. A light and refreshing dessert that is well received after all the feasting.

That’s not all, new to the celebrations this year is the Golden Nian Gao Tart with Cempedak ($32 for 8 pc) boasting a rich cempedak paste snuggled in-between sweet nian gao and a golden tart shell. Back by popular demand is the addictive Golden Nian Gao Tart with Yam ($28 for 8 pc) that features layers of sweet yam filling and chewy nian gao encased in a golden, buttery tart shell. More spring temptations await, such as Glutinous Red Rice with Chinese Sausage, Dried Shrimp & Mushroom ($78 for 6 pc); Wan Hao’s Signature Ginseng Roast Duck ($96); Koi Fish Shape Osmanthus Water Chestnut Cake ($52); Koi Fish Shape Fresh Mango Pudding ($58), and more.

Crystal Jade Kitchen @ The Centrepoint - New Menu With More Cantonese Wok-Fried Specialities And Adorable Lotus Paste Buns

CrystalJadeCentrepoint10

Crustal Jade has a been a household and well-loved local brand since it is founded in 1991, with different dining concepts ranging from fine dining and casual dining restaurants to specialty bakeries. Recently I dropped by Crystal Jade Kitchen at Centrepoint to check out their refreshed menu, with more Cantonese wok-fried specialities.

CrystalJadeCentrepoint3
Steamed Ha Kau 4.2/5

We started with some of Crystal Jade Kitchen's all time favourite dim sum items such as the Steamed Ha Kau ($6.30 for 4pc), Steamed Siew Mai with Crab Roe ($5.80 for 4pc) and Pan Fried Carrot Cake with Dried Shrimp and Preserved Meat ($4.80 for 3pc).

CrystalJadeCentrepoint8
Pan Fried Carrot Cake with Dried Shrimp and Preserved Meat 4.5/5

The Ha Kau wrapped in a thin and translucent skin was plump and crunchy, stuffed with 2 prawns. The Steamed Siew Mai was also meaty and juicy. Lastly the softness of the Pan Fried Carrot Cake with crispy exteriors is further fragrant by the addition of preserved meat and dried shrimp.

CrystalJadeCentrepoint11
Lotus Paste Bun 4/5

Keeping up with the trend, the kitchen has created the new whimsical Assorted Lotus Paste Bun ($3.50 for 3pc). The pillow-soft steamed buns are shaped into adorable hedgehogs, chicken and piglets. Every day 2 of these characters will be available on the menu. Inside them are smooth and subtle sweetness of the white lotus filling.

CrystalJadeCentrepoint16
BBQ Red Sausage 3.5/5

Besides the classic roasted meats, the menu has included the BBQ Red Sausage ($13.80 regular) which is quite uncommon. The Chinese style sausage made up of minced pork and pork cubes, has a sweet char siew finishing that tasted like Taiwan sausage.

CrystalJadeCentrepoint20
Braised Pork Belly with Beancurd and Chive 4/5

For communal dining, there are a couple home-cooked dishes that we worth ordering which are cooked a la minute upon order. Starting with the traditional Cantonese Braised Pork Belly with Beancurd and Chive ($16.80) that comes with silky tofu, flavoured by aroma of prawn paste and chives.

CrystalJadeCentrepoint27
Scrambled Egg with Tomato 4.5/5

A dish that will be enjoyed by both young and old is the Scrambled Egg with Tomato ($13.80). The dish comes with luscious fluffy eggs and fresh tomatoes slices in a moreish sweet and sour ketchup based sauce.

CrystalJadeCentrepoint29
Curry Beef Brisket 4/5

An unexpected item on the menu is the Curry Beef Brisket ($17.80). I doubt many places in Singapore serves this. The piping hot claypot comprises of tender Australian beef brisket in a spicy-sweet curry broth. This is best to eat with a bowl of rice.

CrystalJadeCentrepoint24
Pork Trotter with Ginger and Vinegar Stew 4.2/5

It was to my delight that the restaurant even has Pork Trotter with Ginger and Vinegar Stew ($12.80) on the menu. I am a sucker for the dish. I enjoy biting into the bouncy skin and succulent meat with the concoction of sweet, sour and gingery holding the enjoyment together. Instead of chicken egg, it uses quail egg. This is a bonus.

CrystalJadeCentrepoint35
Hokkien Fried Rice 4.2/5

A new and variations from the usual rice item is the Hokkien Fried Rice ($16.80). The egg fried rice is topped with prawns, conpoy, roasted duck, chicken and mushrooms and cooked in oyster sauce.
