Joie @ Orchard Central - Meatless Fine Dining with A Rooftop Dining View

Grilled Mushroom Steak 1

Perched atop Orchard Central, Joie offers a unique fine-dining experience that is not just for vegetarians or vegans. With a creative meatless menu featuring a delightful Korean twist, this upscale restaurant caters to all occasions, whether you're celebrating a memorable moment or simply enjoying a meal with a view.

Ambience 2

Surrounded by the lush greenery of a rooftop garden, we were fortunate to be seated at one of the best tables, perfectly positioned to watch the sunset as we enjoyed our dinner.

Welcome Drink 1
Welcome Drink, Roasted Korean Sunchoke Tea and Artemisia Tea

We had the 6-Course Dinner, priced at $78++ per person, which includes three starters, a vegetable dish, a main course, and dessert. As there were 2 of us, we had the opportunity to sample all the options available on the course menu.

Watermelon Tuna Tartare 1
“Tuna Tartare” 4/5

This dish truly impressed with its creative use of watermelon to mimic tuna. Served with crispy rice paper, sesame powder, egg yolk gel, apricot, and pickled pears, the Tuna Tartare was both appetising and refreshing - a perfect start to the meal.

Crispy Layered Fries 1
Joie’s Crispy Layered Fries 4/5

An elevated take on a classic, these Crispy Layered Fries are made with imported potatoes from Holland and served with fermented kimchi, gochujang mayo, and black garlic mayo. Each fry offers a combination of textures and flavours that make every bite unique.

Charcoal Makgeolli Slider 1
Charcoal Makgeoli Slider 3.8/5

The Charcoal Makgeoli Slider, which includes halloumi cheese sandwiched between charcoal buns, comes in two pieces per person. The combination of pickled radish, arugula, kimchi puree, and the signature egg yolk gel make this dish enjoyable, although not a standout.

Ddukgalbi Century Scotch Egg 1
“Ddukgalbi” Century Scotch Egg 4/5

An additional starter from the ala carte menu we get to try was the "Ddukgalbi" Century Scotch Egg, a unique twist on the traditional British dish made with century egg. Paired with gochujang and black garlic mayo, this dish is a must-try for century egg lovers.

Grilled Roots Vegetables 1
Grilled Roots Vegetables 2.8/5

Muk Heirloom Cherry Tomato Salad 1
Heirloom Cherry Tomato Salad & Burratina 3/5

We had both vegetable options on the menu, but unfortunately, both dishes were underwhelming compared to our starters. The Grilled Root Vegetables are tough and lacking flavour. As for the Heirloom Cherry Tomato Salad & Burratina, while the sweet cherry tomatoes were enjoyable, the burrata was unfortunately dry. The dish was garnished with olive oil powder, a unique touch, though it didn't elevate the overall experience.

Mapadubu Lasagna 1
Mapadubu Lasagna 3/5

Grilled Mushroom Steak 2
Grilled Summer Mushroom Steak 4/5

We also got both options for the mains on the course menu. Despite being inspired by mapo tofu, the Mapadubu Lasagna lacked the distinct flavours of the dish. The texture of the lasagna sheets was inconsistent; they were soft in some areas and tough in others, which detracted from the overall enjoyment.

Grilled Mushroom Steak 5

The Grilled Summer Mushroom Steak was the highlight of the main courses. Served on a hot plate with homemade black pepper sauce, the monkey head mushroom's texture closely mimicked a steak, making this a satisfying dish.

Basque Burnt Cheesecake 1
Burnt Basque Cheese Cake 3/5

Unfortunately, the Burnt Basque Cheese Cake served with an Oreo crust, and homemade milk ice cream was too dense, more reminiscent of a New York cheesecake than a Basque-style one. It was enjoyable but could be lighter in texture. Joie has recently added a new dessert option to the menu - Black Sesame Ice Cream - which was unavailable at our visit.

Ambience 1

Joie also offers other set lunch and dinner options daily:

• 3-Course: $38++ per person (lunch only, Monday to Friday except public holidays and eve of public holidays)
• 5-Course: $58++ per person
• 6-Course: $78++ per person
• 8-Course: $98++ per person (available for both lunch and dinner)

Ambience 3

The spacious restaurant includes four private dining rooms, perfect for hosting special gatherings.

Elixir Boutique Roasters @ Serene Centre - Reintroducing The Good Old Full-bodied, Bold And Straight-forward Espresso Roasts, While Bringing In The New

ElixirBoutiqueRoaster4

Elixir Boutique Roasters at Serene Centre is all about bold and straight-forward espresso roasts. Beans are chosen from the South America region for the finest quality espresso blends and the ability to handle dark roasts without turning overly bitter. Black or White, you get to choose the beans from the variety of single origins and blends available. But beyond just Black and White, the coffee beans are also roasted specifically to harmonise with spirits for their range of Crafted Coffee-Centric Cocktails. To accompany your coffee and cocktails is a selection of brunch dishes and mains, available from 8.30am till 4pm daily, except Wednesday.

ElixirBoutiqueRoaster34
Killer Queen

Elixir's take on Italian aperitif cocktails, Killer Queen is made with homemade cascara syrup and Disaronno Italian Liqueur. Cascara, the coffee cherries which is usually discarded, is apparently a flavorful and antioxidant-packed ingredient that can be used in ways such as this. Pairing it with the amaretto-tasting liqueur, and there you have a sweet, refreshing pre-meal drink.

ElixirBoutiqueRoaster36
Same Ole’ Situation

Inspired by Old Fashioned, Same Ole’ Situation is made combining Homemade bitters with Costa Rica Las Trojas single origin. If you like it simple, this would be your drink.

ElixirBoutiqueRoaster38
Stormbringer

Stormbringer is intense - a double shot of Guatemala Antigua Santo Domingo espresso with Ron Zacapa 23 Solera Whisky.

ElixirBoutiqueRoaster8
Brulee French Toast 3/5

For a sweet start, Brûlée French Toast ($18) with seasonal fresh fruits and chantilly cream will delight you with its brulee brioche toast. The brioche itself was yummy - very crusty, with very light and airy body. I really like that it was not soggy with custard. The burned sugar taste of the caramelised surface imparts a smoky flavour, which harmonises with the berries and cream.

ElixirBoutiqueRoaster15
Truffle Eggs and Prosciutto 3.5/5

For something heartier, after all, it's a Brunch, Truffle Eggs and Prosciutto ($22) is preferred. I like the combination of textures and flavours of the different elements in this dish. The prosciutto was soft and had a rich mouthfeel, and its saltiness flavoured the creamy, buttery eggs well. The peppery arugula complements these rich elements, while the sweet brioche binds them all together.

ElixirBoutiqueRoaster23
Wagyu Beef Cheek Rendang 3/5

Mains are available from 11am onwards. Wagyu Beef Cheek Rendang ($22) is a laborious dish made with Chef's special rempah, served with free-flow butterfly pea coconut rice. Although the beef cheek was not exactly fork-tender, I quite like its gelatinous texture and glad that its flavours were not lost during the sous vide process.

ElixirBoutiqueRoaster19
Grilled Halloumi 4/5

Grilled Halloumi ($18) is probably one of the best Halloumi dishes I ever had. The sweet and creamy tahini aioli works well with the savoury notes of the halloumi, and the sprinkle of dukka enhances the nutty flavour of the dressing. One of the key components of the dish is actually the flecks of Lemon preserve, which punctuates the dish with sweet, salty and bitter notes.

ElixirBoutiqueRoaster28
Carbonara with Onsen Egg 3.5/5

Carbonara with Onsen Egg ($18) will not disappoint with its sauce made using only Parmigiano-Reggiano and eggs. The dehydrated pancetta adds the right amount of salty notes and texture to the creamy pasta.

Verde Kitchen @ Hilton Singapore - Holistic Approach To Healthy Eating

20180428_125437_HDR

Verde Kitchen at Hilton Singapore is a small intimate space that focus on healthy eating with a more all-round approach. Not just about super food and drinks but the sources and processes of making every dish happen. Similar to Opus, 60 percent of seafood served is sustainable sourced and certified with Marine Stewardship Council / Aquaculture Stewardship Council eco-labels. All chicken and eggs are certified organic, free-range and lacto-free. While all these may seem repetitive, given that most health food concepts are founded on similar principles, Verde Kitchen cultivates a team that is conscious about food waste and resource efficiency. Food surplus and food waste are distributed among appropriate purposes according to food waste hierarchy (Reduce/ Feed people in Need/ Feed livestock / Compost / Disposal), and using recycled and recyclable packaging which is part of the segregated commercial food waste collection scheme.

Salmon Sashimi & Pomelo Salad 3.8/5

When salads are made wholesome, they are just as good as the mains. Salmon Sashimi & Pomelo Salad ($27) looks and taste vibrant with crunchy vegetables such as purple cabbage and carrots, pulpy pomelo, zesty with yuzu soy dressing. Highlighting this dish is the addition of salted strands of wakame, which adds a dimension to both its texture and flavour.

20180428_121206_HDR
Super Food Grilled Halloumi 3.8/5

Super Food Grilled Halloumi ($25) is a 'warmer' salad with a Middle Eastern touch, made with Bulgur, chickpeas, grilled halloumi and rocket leaves. Tossed with roasted walnut dressing, its a salad that is very full on both texture and flavour. The bulgur grains are chewy and nutty, and get nuttier as you chew on it slowly. The chickpeas boosts even a fuller mouthfill I like how the sharp peppery flavour from the rocket leaves cuts through the savoury cheese. The cheese could come in thicker cut for a meatier bite.

Low-fat Creamy Broccoli & Kale Soup 3/5

Though some of you may find the Low-fat Creamy Broccoli & Kale Soup ($16) too green but it sits well with me, for someone who has no issue with finishing a bouquet of it. Submerged in the soup is a poached Omega 3 egg and its golden yolk has the effect of making the soup sightly creamier. This savoury vege soup goes pretty well with the side toast that is rich with emmental & parmesan cheese.

20180428_125247_HDR
Organic Basil-crusted Glacier 51 Tooth Fish 3.8/5

And of course, its not all about soups and salads, there are 'real' food as well. My favourite is the Organic Basil-crusted Glacier 51 Tooth Fish ($38). As mentioned earlier, this highly prized Glacier 51 Tooth Fish is MSC certified. Its meat is buttery and tender, and the minty basil crust works well with its subtle sweetness. The crisp, bitter rocket salad cuts the meat's richness. Though the sauteed mushrooms at the side didn't quite gel with the fish, it was tasty nonetheless. Be sure to finish all the greens on your plate, as most of them come from the chefs' Vertical Garden on the ground floor, which are pesticides free and zero packaging.

20180428_125345_HDR
Free-range Pulled Pork Burger 3/5

The Free-range Pulled Pork Burger ($28) comes with pulled pork with sweet BBQ sauce, coleslaw and cheddar cheese sandwiched in sunflower seed brioche bun. It would have been better if the pork can be more savoury or perhaps more char or smokey in flavour. It satisfies a lot more as a hearty pulled pork sandwich than a burger.

20180428_124939_HDR
Malay-style Organic Lacto Chicken 3/5

The Malay-style Organic Lacto Chicken ($32) is a good attempt in bringing a traditionally rich food to healthier level but more work has to be done to make the gravy more robust.

20180428_134003_HDR
Flourless Chocolate Cake 3.8/5

I was really glad that the desserts here are nothing too far off than they should be, compared to those made diary free, egg free or what not. The Flourless Chocolate Cake ($14) has an enjoyable spongy texture, tastes really quite chocolatey, with occasional drops of tartness from the berry sauce.

20180428_134247_HDR
Homemade Gula Melaka Ice Cream 3.5/5, Chia Seed & Caramelized Hazelnut Pudding 3/5

You will be surprised that the Homemade Gula Melaka Ice Cream ($14) is simply your comforting tub of Chendol. As for the terrarium like Chia Seed & Caramelized Hazelnut Pudding ($14), it is yummy but as a sinful breakfast, less of a guilt-free dessert.

20180428_113953_HDR

Other healthier South-East Asian cuisines are available, and also a range of juices, smoothies, including freshly brewed coffee and espresso made using Java Mountain Coffee, a responsibly farmed and sourced micro-roaster that is committed to empowering rural women farmers in Java. Other than the food, what I really appreciate about Verde Kitchen is its holistic approach towards healthy eating - from sourcing, to cooking, to managing waste and resources.
