Jiak Bar @ Far East Square - A Day-to-Night Taiwanese Eatery Bringing the Spirit of “Re Chao” to China Street

JiakBar4

Tucked away on China Street, Jiak Bar is a charming dual-concept eatery that effortlessly morphs from a casual Taiwanese lunch spot by day into a vibey izakaya-style bar by night. Inspired by Taiwan's beloved "Re Chao" culture – where small, wok-fried dishes are served at bustling local joints – Jiak Bar introduces Singapore to its take on "Xiao Chao," with comforting street-style plates and a solid lineup of cocktails and Taiwan beers perfect for winding down.

JiakBar6
Braised Pig's Ears 3.5/5

We started with a few small bites to warm up the palate. The Braised Pig's Ears ($5.80) offered that signature crunch from the marinated and tender cartilage, a classic Taiwanese snack done well.

JiakBar8
Golden Kimchi 4/5

Unlike its spicier Korean cousin, the Golden Kimchi ($5.80) has a refreshing balance of sweet and tangy flavours that nicely whet the appetite.

JiakBar24
Mala Soft Bone 3/5

Another crunchy option was the Mala Soft Bone ($6.80), mildly spicy with an addictive, numbing hint of mala, offering a textural contrast from the soft cartilage.

JiakBar22
Oyster Popcorn 3.5/5

The Oyster Popcorn ($9.80) came golden and crispy on the outside, hiding juicy, briny oysters within. Accompanied by keropok and crispy basil, it was a playful and aromatic dish, though it could use just a touch more seasoning.

JiakBar10
Taiwanese Stir-fried Pork 4/5

One of the more comforting dishes on the menu is the Taiwanese Stir-fried Pork ($9.80), which felt like something straight out of a home kitchen. Pork belly, tofu, and greens come together in a familiar stir-fry, with a touch of heat from red chillies rounding out the dish.

JiakBar12
Three Cup Century Egg 3.8/5

The Three Cup Century Egg ($7.80) was a standout for those who love century eggs. Deep-fried for a crispy edge, then cooked in the classic Taiwanese "three cup" style — soy sauce, sesame oil, and rice wine — this dish also featured basil and peanuts for added texture and aroma.

JiakBar30
Naked Pepper Chicken Soup 4/5

A personal favourite was the Naked Pepper Chicken Soup ($12.80), a unique offering in the Taiwanese repertoire. The addition of clams gave the broth an oceanic sweetness, while green peppercorns added a vibrant, peppery zing. It was comforting yet bold in flavour.

JiakBar26
Claypot Mala Tofu Stew 2.8/5

Not every dish was a hit, though. The Claypot Mala Tofu Stew ($12.80) was a miss for me. While inspired by Taiwan's classic duck blood mala stew, the tofu substitute here didn't quite capture the essence. It lacked both the expected heat and the numbing intensity of real mala.

JiakBar17

JiakBarIG-9
Hsinchu Fried Vermicelli Meal 4/5

For something more filling, the Hsinchu Fried Vermicelli Meal ($7.80) was satisfying and hearty. Springy, chewy rice vermicelli came paired with a fried egg and wu xiang, making this an affordable and complete one-dish meal

JiakBar1
Crispy Chicken Braised Meat Rice 4.2/5

Another crowd-pleaser was the Crispy Chicken Braised Meat Rice ($10.80), which arrived as a generously loaded bowl. The braised pork had the right fat-to-meat ratio for richness, paired with a whole slab of crispy chicken cutlet, braised egg, pickled cucumber, and stewed cabbage. This dish really delivered on flavour and satisfaction.

Whether you're swinging by for a comforting Taiwanese lunch or settling in for a night of drinks and nibbles, Jiak Bar manages to channel the spirit of a true Taiwanese "Re Chao" joint with a contemporary twist. While not every dish was a knockout, the playful flavours, casual vibes, and thoughtful touches throughout the menu make this a spot worth checking out — especially if you're craving a taste of Taiwan in the heart of Singapore.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

The Ushi Club @ Boat Quay - A Hidden Gem for Japanese Beef Aficionados

TheUshiClub19

TheUshiClubIG-7

The Ushi Club on Circular Road offers an authentic Japanese yakiniku experience, showcasing premium A5-grade Miyazaki and Miyazawa beef. Walking into the restaurant feels like a brief escape to Japan; the cosy, intimate space exudes a Japanese ambience with its minimalist decor and warm, inviting atmosphere. We were seated at the counter, where each guest had their own grill, and the attentive staff handled the grilling process to ensure each cut was cooked to perfection.

TheUshiClub10
Assorted Kimchi and Namul 4.2/5

We started our Ushi Club Course ($111) with a selection of Assorted Kimchi and Namul. The bright flavours and tangy notes perfectly whet the appetite, offering a refreshing counterbalance to the rich meats that followed. Throughout the dinner, we found ourselves returning to these small bites to cut through the richness of the beef.

TheUshiClub15
Choregi Salad 4/5

The Choregi Salad might look simple at first glance, but it's surprisingly flavourful. The greens are tossed in a light yet savoury choregi dressing, adding a delightful crunch and freshness to the course lineup.

TheUshiClub2
Wagyu Beef Sashimi 4.2/5

The Wagyu Beef Sashimi was a revelation. It might seem unusual for anyone unfamiliar with beef sashimi, but the clean and mild flavours of the high-quality raw beef surprised me. There was no hint of gaminess — just a smooth, buttery taste that elevated the experience.

TheUshiClub25
Beef Muscle with Ponzu 3.5/5

The Beef Muscle with Ponzu was less tender than other cuts due to its natural texture, but the tangy ponzu sauce with radish brightened up the dish. While it was not my favourite, the flavours were well-complemented by the acidity of the ponzu, making it an interesting addition.

TheUshiClub18
Assorted Wagyu Platter 4.8/5

TheUshiClub5
Beef Tongue with Spring Onion 4.8/5

TheUshiClubIG-13

The star of the night was the Assorted Wagyu Platter (120g), featuring cuts like Chunk Tender, Premium Short Rib, Beef Skirt, Chunk Rib, Top Blade, and Triceps Brachii Caput. Each piece was grilled by the skilled staff, allowing us to savour the unique textures and flavors of each cut, one by one, at their optimal doneness. For a more adventurous bite, we had Beef Tongue with Spring Onion, which had a pleasant crunchiness balanced by the fresh, sharp flavour of the green onions.

TheUshiClub33
Brisket Yakisuki 4.8/5

TheUshiClubIG-20

TheUshiClub36

A standout from the grilled selection was the Brisket Yakisuki. Tender and well-marbled, this cut melts in your mouth. Dipping it into an egg yolk added a layer of creaminess, enhancing its richness and making it one of the most indulgent dishes of the night.

TheUshiClub37
Garlic Rice 4/5

We were served a comforting bowl of Garlic Rice to wrap up the meal. The garlicky aroma and warm, hearty flavour were the perfect ends to a rich and satisfying dinner.

TheUshiClub22
Wagyu Beef Tartare 4.2/5

We tried the Wagyu Beef Tartare ($28) from the à la carte menu. Mixed with egg yolk, spring onion, and a touch of seasoning, the tartare is perfect when paired with seaweed for a rich, umami-filled wrap.

TheUshiClubIG-17

TheUshiClub28
Kourayaki 4/5

The seasonal Kourayaki ($18) was another treat—a blend of crab tomalley and roe grilled directly in its shell. The rich, creamy texture of the king crab tomalley, combined with the umami depth from Japanese cooking sake, homemade mirin, and butter, was a decadent addition to the meal.

TheUshiClubIG-3

The Ushi Club delivers a stellar Japanese yakiniku experience in a cosy setting where high-quality ingredients and meticulous preparation shine. Each course, from the refreshing starters to the premium Wagyu cuts, is thoughtfully prepared to bring out the best flavours. This spot is a hidden gem for Japanese beef aficionados, offering a taste of Japan in the heart of Singapore.

Joie @ Orchard Central - Meatless Fine Dining with A Rooftop Dining View

Grilled Mushroom Steak 1

Perched atop Orchard Central, Joie offers a unique fine-dining experience that is not just for vegetarians or vegans. With a creative meatless menu featuring a delightful Korean twist, this upscale restaurant caters to all occasions, whether you're celebrating a memorable moment or simply enjoying a meal with a view.

Ambience 2

Surrounded by the lush greenery of a rooftop garden, we were fortunate to be seated at one of the best tables, perfectly positioned to watch the sunset as we enjoyed our dinner.

Welcome Drink 1
Welcome Drink, Roasted Korean Sunchoke Tea and Artemisia Tea

We had the 6-Course Dinner, priced at $78++ per person, which includes three starters, a vegetable dish, a main course, and dessert. As there were 2 of us, we had the opportunity to sample all the options available on the course menu.

Watermelon Tuna Tartare 1
“Tuna Tartare” 4/5

This dish truly impressed with its creative use of watermelon to mimic tuna. Served with crispy rice paper, sesame powder, egg yolk gel, apricot, and pickled pears, the Tuna Tartare was both appetising and refreshing - a perfect start to the meal.

Crispy Layered Fries 1
Joie’s Crispy Layered Fries 4/5

An elevated take on a classic, these Crispy Layered Fries are made with imported potatoes from Holland and served with fermented kimchi, gochujang mayo, and black garlic mayo. Each fry offers a combination of textures and flavours that make every bite unique.

Charcoal Makgeolli Slider 1
Charcoal Makgeoli Slider 3.8/5

The Charcoal Makgeoli Slider, which includes halloumi cheese sandwiched between charcoal buns, comes in two pieces per person. The combination of pickled radish, arugula, kimchi puree, and the signature egg yolk gel make this dish enjoyable, although not a standout.

Ddukgalbi Century Scotch Egg 1
“Ddukgalbi” Century Scotch Egg 4/5

An additional starter from the ala carte menu we get to try was the "Ddukgalbi" Century Scotch Egg, a unique twist on the traditional British dish made with century egg. Paired with gochujang and black garlic mayo, this dish is a must-try for century egg lovers.

Grilled Roots Vegetables 1
Grilled Roots Vegetables 2.8/5

Muk Heirloom Cherry Tomato Salad 1
Heirloom Cherry Tomato Salad & Burratina 3/5

We had both vegetable options on the menu, but unfortunately, both dishes were underwhelming compared to our starters. The Grilled Root Vegetables are tough and lacking flavour. As for the Heirloom Cherry Tomato Salad & Burratina, while the sweet cherry tomatoes were enjoyable, the burrata was unfortunately dry. The dish was garnished with olive oil powder, a unique touch, though it didn't elevate the overall experience.

Mapadubu Lasagna 1
Mapadubu Lasagna 3/5

Grilled Mushroom Steak 2
Grilled Summer Mushroom Steak 4/5

We also got both options for the mains on the course menu. Despite being inspired by mapo tofu, the Mapadubu Lasagna lacked the distinct flavours of the dish. The texture of the lasagna sheets was inconsistent; they were soft in some areas and tough in others, which detracted from the overall enjoyment.

Grilled Mushroom Steak 5

The Grilled Summer Mushroom Steak was the highlight of the main courses. Served on a hot plate with homemade black pepper sauce, the monkey head mushroom's texture closely mimicked a steak, making this a satisfying dish.

Basque Burnt Cheesecake 1
Burnt Basque Cheese Cake 3/5

Unfortunately, the Burnt Basque Cheese Cake served with an Oreo crust, and homemade milk ice cream was too dense, more reminiscent of a New York cheesecake than a Basque-style one. It was enjoyable but could be lighter in texture. Joie has recently added a new dessert option to the menu - Black Sesame Ice Cream - which was unavailable at our visit.

Ambience 1

Joie also offers other set lunch and dinner options daily:

• 3-Course: $38++ per person (lunch only, Monday to Friday except public holidays and eve of public holidays)
• 5-Course: $58++ per person
• 6-Course: $78++ per person
• 8-Course: $98++ per person (available for both lunch and dinner)

Ambience 3

The spacious restaurant includes four private dining rooms, perfect for hosting special gatherings.

Akira Back @ JW Marriott Singapore South Beach - Akira Back Brunch Club: A Newly Introduced Social Affair of Flowing Brunch on Saturdays

IMG_6645

Akira Back at JW Marriott Singapore South Beach has introduced its very own Akira Back Brunch Club, reimagining the traditional Sunday brunch experience and offering it exclusively on Saturdays. The menu reflects Chef Akira Back's heritage, blending modern Japanese cuisine with a Korean flair.

IMG_6649
Tuna & Mushroom Pizza 3/5

IMG_6657
Wagyu Taco 3/5

Starters are all about the crunch. We began with Tuna & Mushroom Pizza and Wagyu Taco, both featuring a crunch element — a crisp and thin pizza base and a crunchy taco, respectively. The pizza was elegant, topped with paper-thin slices of tuna and mushrooms over the equally thin base, although I found the truffle aroma to be a tad overpowering. The wagyu taco whetted our appetites with its unctuous mouthfeel.

IMG_6667
Japanese Oysters 4.5/5

Next, we enjoyed Fresh Harvest, showcasing Japanese Oysters accompanied by various condiments. I highly recommend trying the fresh oyster with yuzu, which lent an extra zing to the oceany taste.

IMG_6689

IMG_6687
Sashimi and Nigiri 4/5

Following this was free-flow Sashimi and Nigiri, laid out in a stunning presentation that was a feast for the eyes. The selection included Salmon, Akami, Spanish Mackerel, Seabream, and two types of Maki Rolls. I was pleasantly surprised by how flavourful the Akami was, given that it is a lean meat. The Red Dragon maki and Spicy Garden maki spiced up the course with spice and heat, with the latter reminiscent of gimbap sans the sesame seaweed.

IMG_6704
Mung Bean Pancake with AB Kimchi Salad.3.5/5

From the Korean Heritage section, we had a Mung Bean Pancake with AB Kimchi Salad. Including such a traditional dish was delightful, as I rarely experienced such a homely dish. However, I wonder if it could be less greasy. The accompanying salad was a star on its own — fresh and crisp, aromatic with sesame oil and kimchi sauce.

IMG_6737
Kanpachi Kama 4/5

The Hot Collection is also free-flowing and was a highlight of the menu. The Kanpachi Kama was perfectly grilled, retaining its moisture and tender flesh. The accompanying yuzu puree accentuated its naturally sweet flavour.

IMG_6725
Beef Toban 4.8/5

The Beef Toban came sizzling hot, and the aroma of the caramelising sauce was simply divine. The sauce was umami with a bit of tang, sweetened with caramelised onions. The mushrooms and beef dressed in the sauce delivered the utmost satisfaction.

IMG_6712
Rock Shrimp Tempura 4.8/5

Rock Shrimp Tempura was a bowl of battered rock shrimp chunks topped with a slightly sweet, creamy, tangy sauce. The batter wasn't exactly tempura-style, but it was thin and delectable, with a chewy texture that gave a textural contrast to the firm and slightly crunchy texture of the rock shrimp.

IMG_6746
Dessert 4/5

Dessert was an artful experience featuring the AB Cigar, Glossy Apple-Y, and aromatic Hojicha Ice Cream.

IMG_6641

Akira Back Brunch Club is available every Saturday, from 12pm at $98.00++ per person.
