Klang-style Bak Kut Teh lovers can now enjoy a taste of Malaysia's beloved herbal pork bone soup right here in Singapore at En Yeoh's Bak Kut Teh (宴杨肉骨茶) at VivoCity. This new dining spot is a collaboration between EN Group and Yeoh's Bak Kut Teh, a well-established name with over 30 years of expertise crafting the perfect herbal broth.

Signature 4 Types Assorted Claypot Bak Kut Teh 4.2/5

For a traditional take on Klang-style Bak Kut Teh, I opted for the Signature 4 Types Assorted Claypot Bak Kut Teh ($10.90/$18.90). The rich, slow-simmered herbal broth is made with over 15 premium herbs and ingredients, striking a well-balanced and subtly fragrant profile without an overly strong medicinal finish.

The claypot comes generously packed with pork trotter, pork ribs, pork belly, Hokkaido pork collar, shiitake mushrooms, button mushrooms, tofu puffs, and fried beancurd. Each cut of pork was tender and well-infused with the broth, making every bite satisfying. The variety of textures from the pork, mushrooms, and tofu puffs added depth to the dish. I particularly liked that the broth was not too overpowering or tangy, making it enjoyable for those who prefer a more balanced, less intense herbal flavour.

Soumen 3.5/5

Instead of the usual steamed white rice, I decided to try the Soumen ($3.20) as an alternative carb pairing. While the silky soft noodles were smooth and pleasant to slurp, I found the portion quite small for the price. Given its light texture, it didn't quite absorb the broth as well as rice would have, making it a less satisfying pairing compared to the usual rice option.

Claypot Dry Pork Belly 4.5/5

One of the standout dishes of the meal was the Claypot Dry Pork Belly ($12.90). Unlike the soupy version, this dish features thick-cut, chunky pork belly pieces coated in a sweet, savoury, and slightly spicy sauce.

The claypot also includes ladyfinger, sliced cuttlefish, dried chilli, and green chilli, which add layers of spice, umami, and fragrance. I particularly liked the addition of cuttlefish, which contributed a subtle seafood aroma and extra umami punch, making the dish even more enjoyable. The pork belly was fatty yet meaty, offering a satisfying chew that complemented the flavourful glaze.

En Yeoh’s Bak Kut Teh is a solid choice for those craving authentic Klang-style Bak Kut Teh in Singapore. The herbal broth is well-executed, striking a balanced and comforting flavour profile without being overly strong or medicinal. While the Soumen may not be the best choice for pairing, the Claypot Dry Pork Belly is a must-try for its bold flavours and satisfying textures. If you're looking for a heartwarming and authentic Bak Kut Teh experience, En Yeoh’s Bak Kut Teh at VivoCity is definitely worth a visit.

KA-MON @ Resorts World Sentosa - Three Traditional Japanese Grilling Techniques Under One Roof

Nestled within Resorts World Sentosa, KA-MON is the latest venture by celebrated Chef Hal Yamashita. It promises an authentic yet innovative Japanese grilling experience. What sets KA-MON apart is its integration of three traditional grilling techniques — irori, robatayaki, and warayaki — all within a single restaurant. It reminds me of Setsuri Ishinomake, which also embraces multiple grilling styles under one roof, showcasing the depth and versatility of Japanese cuisine.

Our meal began with an Amuse Bouche — a delightfully crisp fried fish paired with pickled vegetables in a sweet and sour sauce. The pickles' vibrant acidity perfectly balanced the fish's richness, making it a refreshing and appetising start.

Wagyu Beef Tartare 4.8/5

The Wagyu Beef Tartare is a reimagined take on Yukke, seasoned with soy, garlic, sesame, and gochujang. The quail egg yolk, resting atop the finely diced wagyu, added a luscious creaminess. Mixing everything together and scooping it up with the accompanying crisp papadam created a harmonious blend of sweet, savoury, and umami flavours.

One of the standout dishes was the Organic Egg & Ikura, a decadent layering of Ajitsuke Tamago, briny ikura, and luxurious Hokkaido uni. This dish offered a symphony of textures — from the silky yolk to the creamy sea urchin and the signature pop of salmon roe — all heightened by the sharp, fresh heat of wasabi.

Seafood took centre stage with the Sakoshi Bay Oyster, a prized delicacy from Hyogo Prefecture. Grilled over robatayaki until just 80% cooked, the oyster was then glazed with shio kombu butter and topped with a fragrant crumble of garlic, ginger, and shallots, enhancing its natural oceanic richness.

Tuna Wara Tataki 4.5/5

The Tuna Wara Tataki featured Big Eye Tuna, sustainably sourced from Australia's East Coast. Unlike traditional charcoal grilling, this dish was kissed by straw fire, resulting in a gently charred exterior while preserving the buttery, raw centre. The subtle smokiness complemented the bright ponzu sauce, thinly sliced myoga, and crisp garlic chips, perfectly balancing smoke and freshness.

Irori Grilled Jumbo Tiger Prawn 4.2/5

The Irori Grilled Jumbo Tiger Prawn was a prime example of traditional grilling techniques. Skewered and slow-grilled over charcoal in the irori style, a method dating back to the Jomon period, this dish showcased the prawn's natural sweetness and succulence. A touch of Maldon sea salt and a squeeze of lemon were all that was needed to highlight its pure, briny essence.

For meat lovers, the Aged Breast of Duck was a revelation. Dry-aged for at least five days, the duck was slowly grilled over robatayaki to a perfect medium-rare, resulting in crisp skin and tender flesh. It was accompanied by burdock root purée for an earthy depth, while the spicy romaine and apple salad added a touch of sweetness and crunch, echoing the balance found in Korean BBQ and Japanese yakiniku.

One of the most polarising dishes on the menu is the Coriander Salad — a love-it-or-hate-it experience. Tossed in a white soy vinaigrette and topped with crispy fried sakura ebi and fragrant bawang goreng, the salad delivered a bright, herbal crispness that might not be for everyone but certainly intrigued the palate.

The meal culminated in the Saba Donabe, a tableside performance where rice was cooked in a traditional claypot over grilled fish bone dashi. Depending on the daily fresh catch from Nagasaki, our version featured grilled saba, which was folded into the rice at the tableside. The result? It is a deeply comforting dish with fluffy grains and crisped edges served with miso soup for a satisfying finish.

Mont Blanc "Flower" 4.2/5

To end on a high note, we were served the Mont Blanc "Flower", a delicate yet indulgent dessert. The chestnut mousse, piped atop a crisp French meringue, was paired with mikan yuzu jelly, creating a beautiful contrast between nutty richness and citrusy brightness. It felt like we were enjoying two desserts in one, perfectly encapsulating French pastry finesse and Japanese flavour precision.

Tajimaya Yakiniku @ VivoCity - Golden Feast Yakiniku Platter in an Elegant Revolving Carousel with Premium Cuts and Seafood

For this Chinese New Year, Creative Eateries brings a touch of innovation to the festive season with a variety of celebratory menus across its restaurant brands, including a unique Japanese twist at Tajimaya Yakiniku with their Golden Feast Yakiniku Platter.

The star of the show, presented on an elegant revolving carousel surrounding the charcoal grill, was a decadent assortment of 8 premium meat cuts and 2 types of fresh seafood. The carefully curated lineup included A5 Miyazaki Striploin, A5 Miyazaki Nami Karubi Short Ribs, A5 Kagoshima Zabuton Chuck Flap, A5 Kagoshima Sasabara Flank, MS6/7 Australian Wagyu Rib Fingers, MS6/7 Australian Wagyu Tongue Negi Shio, US Kurobuta Pork Belly, US Kurobuta Pork Jowl, Mekajiki (Swordfish) and Hokkaido Hotate Scallops.

The Miyazaki and Kagoshima cuts stood out with their rich, buttery flavours and melt-in-your-mouth textures, delivering an indulgent experience. However, the MS6/7 Wagyu Rib Fingers proved a little tough to chew, and I would have preferred the Wagyu Tongue to be served in thinner slices for a more enjoyable bite.

Among the pork selections, I enjoyed the Kurobuta Pork Jowl, which had a more balanced fat-to-meat ratio than the pork belly.

Mekajiki

The Mekajiki (Swordfish) was an unexpected delight, especially when grilled to form a golden crust that added a satisfying crunch to its firm, dense, and meaty texture. Its natural fattiness created a luscious mouthfeel rivalling the premium meats.

Japanese Wagyu Sukiyaki Don

The menu also featured Zansai, a starter course showcasing Truffle Kaisen Tartare with Tenkatsu and a mini Japanese Wagyu Sukiyaki Don topped with a silky onsen egg yolk. The don's slices of meat were slightly dry despite the creamy egg yolk adding richness.

Japanese Yuzu Sorbet

The meal concluded with a refreshing scoop of Japanese Yuzu Sorbet, offering a bright and citrusy finale that cleansed the palate beautifully after the indulgent feast.

Surrey Hills Grocer @ Vivocity - Largest Surrey Hills Outlet, Bringing Diners the Aussie Rainforest Experience

Surrey Hills Grocer has unveiled its largest branch on VivoCity's rooftop, offering diners an Aussie rainforest-themed experience. The cosy space is adorned with lush greenery and playful animal decor like kangaroos, koalas, and giraffes.

Like its other branches, this new outlet introduces outlet-exclusive dishes and their first ever full kids menu.

Pet owners will also be happy to know that the outlet is pet-friendly and offers an all-new pet-friendly menu. Their freshly made treats are all crafted with quality, human-grade ingredients.

Diners can find a great variety of produce and food items to be purchased. The retail space is in a dedicated store segment near the entrance.

Surrey’s Homemade Iced Lemon Tea

Surrey has an extensive beverage list, which includes alcohols, fresh juices, wines, smoothies, teas and homemade options, such as the mildly sweet Surrey's Homemade Iced Lemon Tea ($8). It is made in-house using cold-brewed premium black tea dust and fresh lemons.

For a comforting start, we opted for the Corn & Crab Chowder ($14), a mildly creamy soup peppered with sweet crab meat bits and served with a side of focaccia.

Equally satisfying was the Pumpkin Soup ($12), which featured warm flavours of burnt orange and dukkah, balanced by a refreshing touch of mint, accompanied by focaccia.

Tender Seared Turkey 4.8/5

To add to the festive cheer, Surrey Hills Grocer has rolled out a seasonal Christmas menu available till the end of December. I was especially excited to try their Tender Seared Turkey ($32), which was strongly recommended by the staff. It was stellar and indeed one of the most tender renditions I've had of the meat. The turkey breast is drizzled with fragrant truffle butter and served with a bed of creamy truffled pomme puree, sherry caramel, miso glaze butternut squash and mushroom gravy.

Christmas Porchetta 4.5/5

Another festive highlight was the Christmas Porchetta ($28), which features tender Spanish chestnut pork belly with perfectly crisped skin stuffed with aromatics and sweet yet tangy apple cider glaze and cranberry apple compote.

Unfortunately, the Octopus Salad ($28) was less memorable, primarily due to its texture, which was a little too chewy. The sides of edamame, grape salsa and whipped cod roe went well together.

Flat Bread Hammy Benny 4/5

From the standard menu, we had the Flat Bread Hammy Benny ($26), featuring smoked Kurobuta ham, eggs of your choice, wilted spinach, truffle mushroom ragout, and foam-textured hollandaise on warmed flatbread. While enjoyable, my companions found it slightly overpriced for its simplicity.

Hot Honey Pepperoni Pizza 4.2/5

A standout speciality exclusive to this outlet is its Sicilian-style pizzas and pasta. The Hot Honey Pepperoni Pizza ($12) was a crowd-pleaser, featuring creamy ricotta, spicy pepperoni, Parmigiano Reggiano, and a drizzle of hot honey for a sweet-spicy kick.

“Hokkien Mee” 4.8/5

Among the pasta options, the "Hokkien Mee" ($26) impressed us with its creative local twist. Al dente malfadine pasta was bathed in a rich prawn bisque with lard and topped with ikura, grilled prawns, and spicy shrimp sambal. It was a bold, crustacean-infused dish.

Roasted Garlic Miso Butter Pasta 4/5

By contrast, the Roasted Garlic Miso Butter Pasta ($22) felt slightly underwhelming. The casarecce pasta, paired with pork sausage, asparagus, and fresh herbs, was well-cooked but lacked the robust flavours of the other dishes.

Strawberries Donut with Vanilla Custard, Vanilla Glazed Donut 3/5

We sampled two donuts for dessert: the Strawberries Donut with Vanilla Custard ($6.50) and the Vanilla Glazed Donut ($5). Both were dense and much sweeter than expected. We favoured the latter for its delicate sugar coating.

Sticky Date Pudding 4.5/5

Finally, the Sticky Date Pudding ($16) stole the show. This moist sponge cake was paired with sea salt butterscotch, almond crumble, and vanilla ice cream. The sweetness was balanced with a contrasting touch of saltiness.
