Jiak Bar @ Far East Square - A Day-to-Night Taiwanese Eatery Bringing the Spirit of “Re Chao” to China Street

JiakBar4

Tucked away on China Street, Jiak Bar is a charming dual-concept eatery that effortlessly morphs from a casual Taiwanese lunch spot by day into a vibey izakaya-style bar by night. Inspired by Taiwan's beloved "Re Chao" culture – where small, wok-fried dishes are served at bustling local joints – Jiak Bar introduces Singapore to its take on "Xiao Chao," with comforting street-style plates and a solid lineup of cocktails and Taiwan beers perfect for winding down.

JiakBar6
Braised Pig's Ears 3.5/5

We started with a few small bites to warm up the palate. The Braised Pig's Ears ($5.80) offered that signature crunch from the marinated and tender cartilage, a classic Taiwanese snack done well.

JiakBar8
Golden Kimchi 4/5

Unlike its spicier Korean cousin, the Golden Kimchi ($5.80) has a refreshing balance of sweet and tangy flavours that nicely whet the appetite.

JiakBar24
Mala Soft Bone 3/5

Another crunchy option was the Mala Soft Bone ($6.80), mildly spicy with an addictive, numbing hint of mala, offering a textural contrast from the soft cartilage.

JiakBar22
Oyster Popcorn 3.5/5

The Oyster Popcorn ($9.80) came golden and crispy on the outside, hiding juicy, briny oysters within. Accompanied by keropok and crispy basil, it was a playful and aromatic dish, though it could use just a touch more seasoning.

JiakBar10
Taiwanese Stir-fried Pork 4/5

One of the more comforting dishes on the menu is the Taiwanese Stir-fried Pork ($9.80), which felt like something straight out of a home kitchen. Pork belly, tofu, and greens come together in a familiar stir-fry, with a touch of heat from red chillies rounding out the dish.

JiakBar12
Three Cup Century Egg 3.8/5

The Three Cup Century Egg ($7.80) was a standout for those who love century eggs. Deep-fried for a crispy edge, then cooked in the classic Taiwanese "three cup" style — soy sauce, sesame oil, and rice wine — this dish also featured basil and peanuts for added texture and aroma.

JiakBar30
Naked Pepper Chicken Soup 4/5

A personal favourite was the Naked Pepper Chicken Soup ($12.80), a unique offering in the Taiwanese repertoire. The addition of clams gave the broth an oceanic sweetness, while green peppercorns added a vibrant, peppery zing. It was comforting yet bold in flavour.

JiakBar26
Claypot Mala Tofu Stew 2.8/5

Not every dish was a hit, though. The Claypot Mala Tofu Stew ($12.80) was a miss for me. While inspired by Taiwan's classic duck blood mala stew, the tofu substitute here didn't quite capture the essence. It lacked both the expected heat and the numbing intensity of real mala.

JiakBar17

JiakBarIG-9
Hsinchu Fried Vermicelli Meal 4/5

For something more filling, the Hsinchu Fried Vermicelli Meal ($7.80) was satisfying and hearty. Springy, chewy rice vermicelli came paired with a fried egg and wu xiang, making this an affordable and complete one-dish meal

JiakBar1
Crispy Chicken Braised Meat Rice 4.2/5

Another crowd-pleaser was the Crispy Chicken Braised Meat Rice ($10.80), which arrived as a generously loaded bowl. The braised pork had the right fat-to-meat ratio for richness, paired with a whole slab of crispy chicken cutlet, braised egg, pickled cucumber, and stewed cabbage. This dish really delivered on flavour and satisfaction.

Whether you're swinging by for a comforting Taiwanese lunch or settling in for a night of drinks and nibbles, Jiak Bar manages to channel the spirit of a true Taiwanese "Re Chao" joint with a contemporary twist. While not every dish was a knockout, the playful flavours, casual vibes, and thoughtful touches throughout the menu make this a spot worth checking out — especially if you're craving a taste of Taiwan in the heart of Singapore.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

Yu Cun Curry Fish Head (渔村砂煲咖喱鱼头) @ Sultan Gate - Enticing Lunar New Year Menu Alongside Its Signature Curry Fish Head

YuCunSultanGate-14

After nearly a decade since my first visit to Yu Cun Curry Fish Head's (渔村砂煲咖喱鱼头) inaugural outlet at Upper Paya Lebar in 2015, I decided to explore its second outlet at Sultan Gate. With Chinese New Year just around the corner, Yu Cun has rolled out an enticing festive menu alongside its signature dishes that continue to attract fans. Here's a detailed look at my dining experience.

YuCunSultanGate-2

YuCunSultanGate-1
Yu Cun Prosperity Yu Sheng 3/5

No Chinese New Year celebration is complete without tossing Yu Sheng for abundance and prosperity. Yu Cun's Prosperity Yu Sheng ($55++) is a vibrant dish, but compared to other Yu Sheng offerings in the market, it lacked a wow factor in terms of taste and textural interplay. While the flavours are enjoyable, I found them more ordinary than memorable.

YuCunSultanGate-6
Braised Chicken Soup with Creamy Red Lotus 4.2/5

The Braised Chicken Soup with Creamy Red Lotus ($78++) is a comforting, hearty dish packed with rich flavours, perfect for rainy, chilly weather. The broth, brimming with chicken, red lotus, and white fungus, showcases depth and warmth, making it a standout in their menu.

YuCunSultanGate-15
Prosperity Eight Treasure Duck 4.5/5

The Prosperity Eight Treasure Duck ($98++) is a delightful surprise and an absolute highlight of the meal. The tender, well-braised duck is stuffed with fragrant glutinous rice, creating a perfect harmony of textures and flavours. This dish exudes festive indulgence and is a must-try for anyone looking for something special on the menu.

YuCunSultanGate-18
Pen Cai 4.2/5

The Pen Cai ($298++) is a decadent celebration pot filled with premium ingredients such as 10-head abalone, prawns, fish maw, dried scallops, sea cucumber, roasted meats, and vegetables like cabbage and broccoli. The generous portions and luxurious ingredients make it a festive centrepiece. As an added bonus, you can enjoy a 15% discount on the Pen Cai with any purchase of Yu Cun's CNY package.

YuCunSultanGate-24
Steamed Red Grouper in Golden Broth 3.8/5

Fish is an auspicious symbol of abundance during Chinese New Year, and Yu Cun's Steamed Red Grouper in Golden Broth ($118++) is well-executed. The delicate grouper fillets, sandwiched with ham and carrot, are tender and flavorful. While the ham adds richness, the overall dish is satisfying but not groundbreaking.

YuCunSultanGate-29
Bonito Flake Pork Ribs 4/5

The Bonito Flake Pork Ribs ($78++) are fork-tender and marinated in a luscious, sweet sauce. While the addition of bonito flakes adds visual appeal, they don't significantly elevate the flavour profile. That said, the ribs themselves are delicious and worth trying.

YuCunSultanGate-32

YuCunSultanGate-31
Lobster Combinations 3.8/5

The Lobster Combinations ($218++) offers lobster cooked in two styles. The first is deep-fried lobster meat in a sweet orange sauce, while the second is paired with a tangy, spicy Thai-style salad. While the contrasting flavours are enjoyable, the dish felt slightly predictable and lacked the wow factor compared to other seafood options on the menu.

YuCunSultanGate-14
Claypot Curry Fish Head 4.8/5

The star of the show is undoubtedly Yu Cun's Claypot Curry Fish Head. Revisiting this signature dish after almost a decade, I was pleasantly surprised by the improvement in flavour. The curry is now richer, creamier, and more lemak than I remembered. The dish is loaded with fresh vegetables like long beans, lady's fingers, and tau kee, making it a hearty and satisfying offering. It's clear that Yu Cun has refined its recipe over the years, and this dish alone is worth the visit.

YaCunSultanGateFront-1

Yu Cun Curry Fish Head continues to be a go-to spot for hearty, comforting Chinese cuisine, especially during the festive season. While some dishes on the CNY menu could use a touch more creativity, signature items like the Claypot Curry Fish Head and Prosperity Eight Treasure Duck shine brightly. Whether planning a celebratory feast with family or revisiting old favourites, Yu Cun's offerings will surely make your meal memorable.

Lo Hey Seafood (捞起海鲜) @ One Holland Village - Blending The Essence of Classic Hong Kong Seafood Restaurants with 1980s-90s Film Nostalgia

LoHeySeafood19

Lo Hey Hong Kong Seafood is the latest addition to the vibrant One Holland Village, bringing a slice of old Hong Kong to Singapore. The restaurant exudes a nostalgic charm with its neon lights, jade tiles, and live seafood tanks, all accompanied by a cinematic flair reminiscent of the golden age of Hong Kong cinema in the 1980s and 1990s. With its unique ambience and a menu celebrating Hong Kong's beloved seafood traditions, Lo Hey Hong Kong Seafood promises a feast for both the eyes and the palate.

LoHeySeafood5
Lo Hey Tossed Chicken Salad 4/5

A creative twist on the traditional Yu Sheng, the Lo Hey Tossed Chicken Salad ($22.80) features tender, succulent poached chicken paired with a tangy vinaigrette that harmoniously ties together a vibrant medley of julienned vegetables. A final touch of peanuts and fresh coriander adds crunch and herbaceous notes, making this a refreshing start to the meal.

LoHeySeafood9
Hami Melon Sea Conch Chicken Soup 5/5

The standout dish for me was the Hami Melon Sea Conch Chicken Soup ($58), which is both heartwarming and nourishing. This soup is the result of meticulous preparation, simmered for eight hours to extract maximum flavour. The sweetness of Xinjiang Hami melon beautifully complements the umami richness of dried sea conch, scallops, pork ribs, and ginseng. The soup's savoury-sweet profile and restorative qualities make it a therapeutic and satisfying dish. Pre-ordering is essential for this comforting bowl of goodness.

LoHeySeafood29
Sauteed Long Beans with Dried Shrimps 4.5/5

The Sauteed Long Beans with Dried Shrimps is a simple yet perfectly executed dish. The beans retain their crunch, while the dried shrimp and pork lard add a savoury depth, elevating this humble vegetable dish.

LoHeySeafood35
Deep fried Chicken with Ginger 4.2/5

The Deep Fried Chicken with Ginger is an unassuming dish that allows the ingredients to shine. The chicken is tender and juicy, while the ginger provides a fragrant lift that enhances the overall flavour, making every bite deeply satisfying.

LoHeySeafood10
Deep Fried Soon Hock with Soy Sauce 4/5

We had the Soon Hock ($10/100g) from the live seafood tanks and opted for the deep-fried preparation. The result was a beautifully crispy exterior paired with moist, flaky fish meat. The soy sauce provided the perfect complement, enhancing the fish's natural sweetness.

LoHeySeafood21
Braised Lobster with Vermicelli 4.2/5

Diners can choose between Australian or Boston lobster for the live lobster. We opted for the Australian lobster (market price) and selected the Braised Lobster with Vermicelli cooking style. The vermicelli absorbed the crustacean's rich essence, making every mouthful an indulgent slurp packed with seafood flavour.

LoHeySeafood24
"Typhoon Shelter" Style Stir Fried Crab 4.5/5

A must-try is the "Typhoon Shelter" Style Stir Fried Crab, a classic Cantonese dish originating from Hong Kong. The crab is cooked with a fragrant blend of spices and aromatics, creating an enticing aroma that pairs wonderfully with the natural sweetness of the crab meat. This dish encapsulates the bold and vibrant flavours of Hong Kong seafood cuisine.

LoHeyInterior-2

LoHeyInterior-3

With its nostalgic charm, focus on live seafood and celebration of authentic Hong Kong flavours, Lo Hey Hong Kong Seafood offers a dining experience that brings the essence of Hong Kong's cuisine to Singapore.

Cheng Hoo Thian Teochew Restaurant (清壺天潮州餐馆) @ Whampoa West - One of Singapore's Oldest Restaurant with a 100 Years' History

ChengHooTian1

Cheng Hoo Thian Teochew Restaurant (清壺天潮州餐馆) at Whampoa has stood the test of time, with a legacy that dates back nearly a century to 1930. Named after its founder, Mr. Koh Cheng Hoo, the restaurant's humble beginnings as a "Zhi Char" stall near Clarke Quay have evolved through decades of relocations, closures, and reopenings. Currently helmed by the founder's youngest son, Mr. Jimmy Koh, the restaurant is celebrating its 7th anniversary at its Whampoa location with a promotional 8-course menu for $690 Nett (10 pax) until 31 Dec 2024. I recently had the opportunity to experience the food here, steeped in tradition and heritage.

ChengHooTian3
Chilled Cold Crab with Yellow Roe and Double Shell 4.2/5

Our meal began with a classic Teochew delicacy — the Chilled Cold Crab with Yellow Roe and Double Shell. The crab was impeccably fresh, with sweet, firm meat and umami-rich roe that delighted the palate. Complemented by two traditional dipping sauces — vinegar and the tangy kek yu (tangerine sauce)—this dish set a high bar for the courses to come.

ChengHooTian5
Double-boiled Chicken with White Fungus & Mushrooms in Korea Ginseng Soup 4.5/5

A highlight of the meal was the Double-boiled Chicken with White Fungus & Mushrooms in Korean Ginseng Soup, a nourishing and aromatic offering. The soup was infused with chicken essence, while the white fungus provided a delightful textural contrast. The addition of Korean ginseng enhanced the flavour while imparting its reputed health benefits, making this a hearty and satisfying course.

ChengHooTian4
Barbecue Suckling Pig 4.2/5

The menu’s incredible value shone through with the inclusion of a whole Barbecue Suckling Pig, perfectly roasted to achieve a delightful, crispy exterior. The crunchy skin paired with the succulent meat was nothing short of a treat, and it easily became one of the standout dishes of the evening.

ChengHooTian7
Steamed Pomfret Teochew Style 4/5

The Steamed Pomfret Teochew Style paid homage to traditional Teochew flavours, featuring a tangy broth made with sour plum and salted vegetables. While the dish retained its quintessential balance of flavours, the fish was slightly overcooked by a minute or two, taking away some of its tender texture.

ChengHooTian9
Pan Fried Bombay Duck Omelette Old School Recipe 4/5

An intriguing addition to the meal was the Pan-fried Bombay Duck Omelette, an old-school recipe not commonly seen on menus today. Contrary to its name, Bombay Duck is a type of fish, not poultry. Its name originated from its pungent aroma during train transportation in Mumbai (formerly Bombay), which led to it being nicknamed "Bombay Daak (Mail)" by locals. Along the way, the British picked it up as the Bombay Duck, and the name got lost in translation. This dish had a nostalgic appeal, and the fluffy omelette paired with the salty, umami flavour of the fish was a delightful surprise.

ChengHooTian12
Stewed Loffah with Punning Beancurd and Prawns 4.2/5

A lighter offering was the Stewed Luffa with Punning Beancurd and Prawns. Simple yet elegant, the dish highlighted the natural sweetness of the prawns and the luffa's earthy flavours, while the beancurd's silky texture tied everything together beautifully.

ChengHooTian18
House Special Teochew Siu-Bee 4.5/5

One of the rarer dishes was the House Special Teochew Siu-Bee, which resembled Siew Mai but was wrapped in a delicate dumpling skin stuffed with minced meat and glutinous rice. Served with black vinegar sauce, this dish provided a multi-textural experience in every bite, making it a unique and memorable part of the meal.

ChengHooTian21

ChengHooTianTangerine-5
Sweet Yam Paste with Mandarin Orange and Gingko Nuts 5/5

The finale was the Sweet Yam Paste with Mandarin Orange and Ginkgo Nuts, a classic Orh Nee with an exceptional twist. The highlight was the preserved mandarin orange, which underwent an intricate 9-day preparation process involving multiple stages of washing, layering with honey and malt sugar, and slow cooking. This meticulous effort resulted in a beautifully candied orange that perfectly complemented the smooth, rich yam paste. It’s easily one of the best Orh Nee desserts I’ve ever had.

ChengHooTian15
Wok Fried Cai Po Hor Fun 4/5

As the 8-course menu lacked a carbohydrate dish, we opted to add a plate of Wok-fried Cai Po Hor Fun. Unlike the typical stir-fried hor fun, this dish was executed in a style akin to fried carrot cake, with rice noodles encased in a fragrant egg coating. While the execution was excellent, the cai po (preserved radish) flavour could have been more pronounced to elevate the overall dish.

Cheng Hoo Thian Teochew Restaurant continues to be a bastion of Teochew culinary heritage, showcasing flavours and recipes that are increasingly rare in modern dining. With its promotional 8-course menu, the restaurant pays tribute to its rich history and offers tremendous value for a group celebration. It is an experience not to be missed for lovers of traditional Teochew cuisine.
