Singapore JIAK @ Frasers Towers - Four Hawker Food Brands Under One Roof with Dishes Below $10 in CBD

SingaporeJiak18

Singapore JIAK at Frasers Towers is a food-court-inspired concept by the Singaporean-owned Akashi Group. Singapore JIAK debuts 4 hawker brands within this cosy space - Grandma's, Dunman Wanton Mee, Teck Kee Fat Duck and Ah Goh Fish Soup.

Grandma's Curry Chicken Nasi Lemak 4.5/5

Grandma's is a resurrected brand under the Akashi Group that was established in 2008. Some of you may be familiar with some of their local dishes. At Singapore JIAK, Grandma's showcases their nasi lemak dish, with options such as Chicken Wing Nasi Lemak ($5.80), Crispy Bukhari Chicken Leg Nasi Lemak ($9.80), and the signature Grandma's Curry Chicken Nasi Lemak ($9.80). We tried the latter, which came with a chicken leg doused in curry that packed a punch. The coconut rice was aromatic and fluffy, and I was delighted by how thick the egg omelette slice was.

Mixed Pork Wanton Mee 4.2/5, Fried Wanton 4/5

Behind Dunman Wanton Mee is the culinary team formerly from Wanton Seng, known for its bowls of springy noodles tossed with aromatic pork lard. There are four dishes on the menu – Classic Dunman Wanton Mee ($5.80), Char Siew Wanton Mee ($6.80), Roasted Pork Wanton Mee ($6.80) and Mixed Pork Wanton Mee ($7.80). We had the ultimate combination - Mixed Pork Wanton Mee. While the Char Siew was on the leaner side, the wantons were satisfying with their plump and meaty fillings, and the crispy pork delivered the much anticipated cracking skin. Fried Wantons is available as well.

Duck Rice 4.2/5

Teck Kee Fat Duck is the sister brand of London Fat Duck, renowned for its mouthwatering roasted Irish ducks. They use the same Irish duck and adopt similar roasting techniques, aiming to deliver the same melt-in-the-mouth and robust flavours to their customers. The menu also features other roasted meats, including salted chicken, roast pork, and honey char siew. True to their promise, what we had didn't disappoint, with its juicy and tender meat complemented by beautifully roasted skin. The sauce worked perfectly to bring the rice and meat together.

Sliced Fish Soup 4/5

Ah Goh Fish Soup is also an original brand created for this concept. The soup itself is boiled using fish bones leftover from premium fish imported from Japan, enhanced with a dash of 20-year-old Hua Tia wine. We had the Sliced Fish Soup ($5.80) with batang fish. What sets this fish soup apart you can taste is the pronounced flavour extracted from the specific fish bones they use. Although it was tasty, I prefer a sweet touch for a better balance. The fish slices were fresh and paired well with a generous portion of vegetables, making the bowl of fish soup delightfully wholesome.

Heng Gi Goose And Duck Rice @ Tekka Food Centre - Long Queue For Their Teochew Braised Duck Rice

IMG_9892ed

A visit to Tekka Food Centre you will probably spot the long queue at Heng Gi Goose And Duck Rice. From what I gathered from my friend, the stall is currently run by the disciple of the original stall owner who has over 60 years of braising duck. The disciple has mastered the braising skill from his master. It can be seen from the long queue at the stall. By the way, the stall does not sell goose anymore.

Duck Rice 4.2/5

I had the Duck Rice for one person and it costs $3.50. It comes with a bowl of white rice drizzled with the braising sauce, a plate of duck meat and a bowl of soup.

IMG_9897ed

I think what stood out about the duck rice here is the braising sauce. It is not overly salty but instead has a rustic characteristic that is well balanced and flavourful. It is best appreciated with a bowl of white rice. In fact, I think I can finish a bowl of rice with just the sauce.

IMG_9896ed

The duck meat itself is also well braised, light but yet flavourful. More important the meat was not too fat and yet tender.

Although the stall official closing time is 230pm, most of the time they are sold out before that. To avoid disappointment, do go early if you want to eat their duck rice.

South Buona Vista Road Famous Teochew Boneless Duck Rice @ Sam Leong Road

IMG_8433ed

Fans of famous Lim Seng Lee Duck Rice at South Buona Vista which has closed its door in July 2013 despair not as Mr Lim Ah Too's brother in law, Mr Ang Chiap Teck who has been working with him for the past 28 years has decided to revive the business and opened his own stall at Little India. Occupying a corner unit at Kim San Leng Eating House along Sam Leong Road, Mr Ang has named the stall South Buona Vista Road Famous Teochew Boneless Duck Rice.

IMG_8431ed

When I visited the stall on a Sunday afternoon, business was slow. I noticed the stall is consider quite spacious. They are also serving some of their former signature sambal dishes such as the Sambal Kang Kong, Sambal Sotong, Sambal Prawn and Sambal Tofu.

Braised Duck Leg 3.8/8

I ordered a plate of Braised Duck Leg Rice ($5.50). The beautifully braised duck was tender and covered in a herbal gravy with a nice hint of cinnamon. However, I thought the gravy tasted a tad on the salty side.

IMG_8429ed

I did not visit Lim Seng Lee Duck Rice when it closed its shutter back in July 2013. I actually felt quite regret that I did not do so. I am glad that Mr Ang has decided to revive the recipe at a venue that is more accessible and nearer to my place now.

Anchor Celebrates Heartland Food Campaign - Anchor's 美食大选

IMG_6086

I was very privileged to be the only blogger to be invited by the kind folks at Anchor Beer to join them in the celebration of Anchor Celebrates Heartland Food Campaign - Anchor's 美食大选 as the campaign drawn to a conclusion with a mini food adventure. Together with 15 lucky readers and consumers with a friend of theirs, we visited the winning stall of the last 2 featured dishes - Braised Duck and Oyster Egg.

IMG_6094

The whole event was hosted by Liu Ling Ling, the famous and popular Getai Queen. She is so friendly and humorous, keeping us entertained the whole night. We also have Mr Schubert Neo, Senior Marketing Manager of APB to give out the award to the wining stall.

IMG_6095

The winning stall for best Braised Duck is Seng Kee Roasted Meat Duck Rice at Blk 7 Eunos Cresent. I am happy and proud that I have reviewed the stall and it won!

IMG_6089

And of course we drink Anchor Beer as we indulged in the food from the winning stall.

I will not review the stall again. You can read it in my previous post here.

After Eunos, we made our way to SWEE Fried Oyster the winner for best Oyster Egg at Blk 644 Hougang Ave 8. Actually the stall has been around for almost 22 years but they were more popular for their satay.

IMG_6099
Fried Oyster

One distinct different I noticed is their chilli sauce which surprisingly pairs very well with the fried oysters. The plate of fried oyster also came with fresh, fat and juicy oysters.

Seng Kee Roasted Meat Duck Rice @ Eunos

IMG_4710

My mother reads the Wanbao (晚报) newspaper and I like to browse through the paper's food column. It always introduced local fare and I will make a note to visit them if I came across an interesting stall.

scan099

Recently Anchor Beer has a contest in Wanbao (晚报) newspaper nominated by their readers for the top 5 favourite braised duck. Seng Kee's Braised Duck was one of the 5 finalist. When I saw the address, I realized I have been passing by this stall for the past 8 years in my journey home from work and I have never eaten there.

Coincidentally, the stall belongs Shiting's uncle, a foodie friend of mine. After firing a few text messages, we met up for a Sunday lunch with Celes and Shiting's family.

IMG_4681
Braised Duck 4.2/5

Since Seng Kee was the top 5 finalist for their braised duck, definitely we must taste it to know why.
With over 30 years of braising experience, no wonder the Braised Duck ($10) came with the taste of tradition, similar to how my grandma would have done it when she was around. Not overly intense in flavours, just simple and light but tasty. I also like the fact that the duck was not too fat with just a slight thin layer of fats underneath the skin. If you are there for just a simple lunch, a plate of duck rice will cost $3 while the boneless duck rice is $3.50.

IMG_4701
Assorted Braised 4.2/5

The stall also sells a selection of assorted braised. We tried the Assorted Braised ($6) that came with Tau Kwa ($0.80/pc), Tau Pok ($0.60/pc), Egg ($0.60/pc) and Braised Pig Head ($3 minimum). Not many stall sells braised pig head nowadays. I really enjoyed the texture and well braised flavour of it.

IMG_4683
Roast Duck 4.5

The braised duck was already good but I like Seng Kee's Roast Duck ($10) even more. Once again the duck was not too fat with a nice thin crisp of skin over the succulent and tender duck meat. Same as the braised duck. a plate roast duck rice is $3 and boneless is $3.50.

IMG_4696
Roast Pork & Char Siew 4/5

The Roast Pork and Char Siew ($8) are the other roasted meat that is available at the stall. I loved the  roast pork with the crackling crisp skin and the beautiful layers of meat and fats. The stall used lean meat for the Char Siew after feedback from their customers. I would preferred it to be more fat and charred. A plate of roast pork or char siew rice is $3.

IMG_4714
Chicken Wings & Pork Ribs Mix 3.8/5

I am surprised that the stall also sells Pork Ribs & Chicken Wings ($4.20). The chicken wing is at $1.20 per piece and the pork ribs $34 per kg. The stall is only run by 2 gentlemen and they have to roast and braise all these delectable meats all by themselves in the confine space at their small stall. The children will love the pork ribs and chicken wings with the lovely sweetness beautifully coated over it. For me, it was a bit too sweet for my palate.

Yu Kee Duck Rice and Noodle House @ Liang Seah Street

Yu Kee has been around Singapore over sixty years and has around 50 outlets over Singapore. Yu Kee is known for its stew sauce recipe, tender duck meat and delicious chilli sauce made with ikan bilis.

Besides the tender lean duck meat, the duck rice set comes with stew sauce rice, stewed egg and dried bean curd. The perfect match to go with the duck rice will be their ikan bilis chilli sauce.
