IMG_8607

Usher in this joyous season with Da Paolo Gastronomia's 'Everyday Italian' Festive Highlights available for self pick-up and delivery. They are available for orders online from 1 November to 31 December 2023 or while stocks last (whichever is earlier) for self pick-up from any Da Paolo Gastronomia outlet and delivery from 4 November 2023.

IMG_8640
Stuffed & Deboned Roast Turkey 4.8/5

The Stuffed & Deboned Roast Turkey ($388, approximately 4kg) was excellent. Filled with its own meat and its Christmas Stuffing, which comprises chestnuts, shiitake mushrooms, and veggies, enveloping a classic Italian sausage Cotechino, it breaks the monotony of having roast turkey during the Christmas season. The stuffing itself was seasoned just enough to complement the tender turkey meat, and the flavoursome sausage imparted a depth of savoury and meaty flavour that truly enhanced the experience of enjoying a roast turkey on this special occasion.

IMG_8678
Braised Beef Rib 3/5

The Braised Beef Ribs ($248, approximately 1.3kg) is new to the line-up, suitable for 6 to 8 persons. It's low-cooked in red wine and served with roasted potatoes, onions, carrots, and cherry tomatoes. While the rib was fork-tender, I found it lacking in flavour.

IMG_8665
Brussels Sprouts, Turnip & Cranberry Salad

IMG_8626
Truffle Mac & Cheese

Sumptuous sides are available to pair with the roasts. For a refreshing crunch, the best option would be Brussels Sprouts, Turnip & Cranberry Salad ($69). The cranberries lent pop of sweetness to the roots and vegetables. For something hearty and indulgent, Da Paolo's signature Truffle Mac & Cheese ($110) is good for 4 to 6 persons.

IMG_8635
White Forest Log Cake 4.8/5

For the very first time, I've found a white log cake that isn't cloyingly sweet. Conversely, this White Forest Log Cake ($89, approximately 900g) was light, featuring white chocolate yoghurt chantilly. What makes all the difference is the homemade rum-spiked morello cherry compote in the centre. Sweet and tart, with a depth of smoky and bittersweetness imparted by the rum, perfectly matches the yoghurt chantilly.

IMG_8636
Homemade Stollen 4/5

The new Homemade Stollen ($48, approximately 400g) is crafted with month-long macerated dried fruit and toasted nuts in their very own spice blend and traditional Kirschwasser. The toasted nuts are melded within, giving it a moreish nutty flavour, which helps cut through the richness of the sweet marzipan core.

IMG_8642
Gingerbread Chocolate Tart 3.5/5

IMG_8651
Rocky Road Eggless Brownie 3.5/5

There are new sweet delights as well. The Gingerbread Chocolate Tart ($89, approximately 700g) boasts a buttery gingerbread spiced crust with a gooey homemade caramel layer between almond frangipane and dark chocolate. While the tart is unique with its gingerbread tart shell, it could have been less sweet for a better balance. The new Rocky Road Eggless Brownie ($89, approximately 850g) features a layer of dark chocolate ganache and is topped with walnuts, marshmallows, and Maraschino cherries. I find the chocolate notes a tad overwhelmed by the sweetness.

IMG_8689
Panettone

Exquisite Gift Hamper Panettone - Handmade by Da Paolo's artisan bakers in Italy, the dough is leavened for 36 hours to develop a softer and fluffier crumb with more intense flavours. Panettone Classico ($72 for 750g) and Panettoncino Classico ($14.90, 100g) are filled with raisins and candied citrus peels. In contrast, the Panettone Cioccolato ($75 for 750g) is studded with dark chocolate chips, and the Panettone Prosecco ($75 for 750g) contains Prosecco D.O.C.G. cream.

IMG_8627

All offerings other than the Gingerbread Cookies, Stollen, Tea Tins, and Panettone are exclusively available online at https://gastronomia-foodtoorder.dapaolo.com.sg from 1 November to 31 December 2023 or while stocks last (whichever is earlier) for self pick-up from any Da Paolo Gastronomia outlet, and delivery from 4 November 2023. Orders must be made three days in advance, before 12pm. Enjoy anlol early bird offer of 15% off the Christmas Roast Bundle for orders placed from 1 November till 30 November 2023.

Binary @ Palais Renaissance - New Gastrobar Featuring Asian And Western Cuisines

Binary9

Newly opened at Palais Renaissance is Binary, a gastrobar that offers both Asian and Western cuisines complemented by a remarkable selection of 60 wine labels and cocktails. The menu allows guests to choose from two culinary approaches or enjoy both styles on the same plate.

Binary2
Home-made Kubaneh Bread 4.5/5

A crowd favourite with almost every diners that I know that has visited the gastrobar is the Home-made Kubaneh Bread ($14) served with garlic butter and kombu butter. The Jewish Yemeni pull-apart bread is so soft and fluffy that is addictive so good with the butter pairing.

Binary6
Tomato Bruschetta 3/5

The other bread item on the menu is the Tomato Bruschetta ($14) served with fresh tomato concasse and sour plum infused tomatoes. Tomato is served two ways incorporating both Asian and Western flavours. It is enjoyable but not something extraordinary.

Binary16
Deep-fried Burrata

It is my first time having a Deep-fried Burrata ($18). The whole burrata is coated in panko and deep-fried. It is paired with pesto alla genovese. It may be an interesting idea, but I didn't find it helps elevate the enjoyment. I still prefer the burrata in its original form.

Binary20
Chicken Wings 4.5/5

I adore the "Nasi Lemak" style Chicken Wings ($18) served with sambal tumis. It is very flavourful and aromatic from the various spices marination. The accompanying sambal tumis is an excellent pairing for the delicious chicken wings.

Binary11
Tiger Prawns 4.5/5

A beautiful dish on the menu is the classic Spanish tapas, Gambas Al Ajillo. The bouncy and crunchy tiger prawns are sauteed in olive oil, garlic, chilli flakes, parsley, lemon juice and white wine.

Binary23
Octopus 4.5/5

The Grilled Octopus in Lao Gan Ma Chilli is a unique dish on the menu. It is an interesting combination that works for me. I have tried a local take using sambal, but Lao Gan Ma Chilli's version is even better.

Binary26
Iberico Pluma 4.5/5

The Iberico Pluma ($38) is marinated with Korean Gochujang, served with fresh green coral lettuce, ssamjang sauce, chopped kimchi and sea salt. The best way to enjoy the tender meat is to eat it like a wrap, wrapping it with lettuce.

Binary30
10 Veg Chopped Salad

Binary36
Parmesan Bacon Cauliflower

You can also order some sides to go along with your mains such, as 10 Veg Chopped Salad ($14) and Parmesan Bacon Flower ($14).

Binary39
Ice Jelly, Yuzu Sorbet

Binary43
Warm Homemade Fudgey Brownie, Vanilla Ice Cream

Ending the night on a sweet note, we have the Ice Jelly, Yuzu Sorbet ($16) and Warm Homemade Fudgey Brownie, Vanilla Ice Cream ($16). I prefer the Aiyu Jelly as it is sweet and refreshing.

Lobster Air @ City Gate - Hop Onto Cloud Nine With Airplane-themed Restaurant Lobster Air

LobsterAir1

Situated within City Gate, new airport-themed restaurant Lobster Air has opened its doors to serve premium lobster dishes for the lobster and travel enthusiasts. Every customer will enjoy an immersive airline cabin experience, choosing to dine in first or business class zones, capture Instagram moments against full-sized plane interior images, and enjoy first-rate service from a team of authentic cabin crew, including steaming hot towels.

LobsterAir2

Customers can choose from airline-inspired Business Class/First Class Lunch/Dinner Sets or Short-Haul selection during their ‘flight’ at Lobster Air. They can also go for Before Landing Desserts, Brunch and In-Flight Alcoholic and Non-alcoholic Beverages. We tried their Business Class Lunch Course, which included a choice of mains, soup of the day (+$10), salad, appetisers (+$20) and desserts at additional costs.

LobsterAir4
Mushroom Soup 3.8/5

First, we had the Soup Of The Day - Mushroom Soup (+$10). Creamy and filled with mushroom bits, we enjoyed the deep earthy flavours of this classic mushroom soup that has a faint whiff of truffle.

LobsterAir6
L.A. House Salad 3/5

Next, we were served a small bowl of L.A. House Salad dressed in a tangy house dressing.

LobsterAir8
Half Boston Lobster Aglio Olio 3.5/5

Customers can opt for their appetisers of a half dozen oysters as well at an additional $20. However, we skipped the appetisers and headed straight for their mains of the Half Boston Lobster Aglio Olio ($44) baked with garlic butter sauce and a serving of al dente Aglio Olio Spaghetti. While we loved the lobster's garlic butter fragrance, we felt that the taste fell flat as the spaghetti has the same garlicky flavours.

LobsterAir11
Dark Chocolate Lava Cake 4/5

LobsterAir13
Signature Brownie 3.8/5

Finally, round off your meal with their chewy and fudgy Signature Brownie ($5) or the Dark Chocolate Lava Cake ($8) served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

LobsterAir3

Beyond its gastronomical offerings, Lobster Air endeavours to make a difference in a world stricken by uncertainty due to COVID-19. Seeing how the pandemic has greatly impacted the aviation industry, Lobster Air is founded to offer part-time or full-time jobs to affected personnel such as flight attendants, pilots, ground crew and back office workers who have lost their jobs or suffered reduced income.

In addition, Lobster Air is also extending ‘Staff Travel’ exclusive deals to employees from across all airlines and departments to brighten up the gloomy period for the aviation industry workforce. The privileges include 50% off for the second purchase of the course menu, a hearty discount inspired by how airlines offer staff travel tickets, and free coffee or tea, provided upon staff ID presentation on weekdays.

Mark your calendar for you might take your parents out to Morganfield’s for a well-deserved treat.

IMG_20180429_155754_936
Bacon Wrapped Meatballs 4/5

With a variety of appetizer to choose from, we started off with the Bacon Wrapped Meatballs ($11.90) which comes in deep fried pork meatballs wrapped with crispy bacon. The side of Garlic Aioli sauce dip is a great complement to the savoury pork and bacon.

IMG_20180429_155429_636
Pop Corn Pork 3.8/5

The Pop Corn Pork ($9.90) features a basket full of pork cubes marinated with Morganfield's secret spice mix & deep fried till crisp. Dipping it into their homemade Garlic Aioli & BBQ Ranch Sauce adds a sweet tangy and smoky flavour to the savouriness of the meat.

IMG_20180429_160050_604
Golden Fried Wings 4/5

We had the Golden Fried Wings ($12.90) as the third appetizer. Marinated with a secret recipe, its outer skin is fried till a golden brown crispiness, while its meat is tender and juicy. The appetizers are best paired with a glass of beer in hand.

IMG_20180429_155256_584
Summer Peach Cooler 4/5 and SweetWater Blue 4/5

For drinks, we had the Summer Peach Cooler ($6.90) and SweetWater Blue ($10). The former is a refreshing blend of sweet peach & orange flavour with a splash of fizzy soda, while the latter is a fruit beer which has a refreshing and fruity taste, light with a hint of fresh blueberries. With an ABV of 4.8%, the craft beer is easy to drink and finishes extra clean.

IMG_20180429_160230_337
Candied Peach BBQ Sticky Bones 4.2/5

The highlight of the meal is the limited-time Candied Peach BBQ Sticky Bones (Half Slab $29.90, Full Slab $46.90). Created specially for the ladies, it is made with slices of juicy peaches and rich honey, which constitutes the perfect blend of sweet and tangy over the generously-portioned and well-executed ribs.

IMG_20180429_160426_010
Smokey Bacon Bourbon Sticky Bones 4.5/5

Another one of their highlights - The Smokey Bacon Bourbon Sticky Bones (Half Slab $29.90, Full Slab $46.90) features a slab of tender, fall-off-the-bone ribs, topped with a hearty, rich and smoky sauce infused with bourbon, hand-chopped bacon bits and strips of candied bacon. With a flavourous luscious coating atop the savoury meat, the dish displays the perfect balance of sweet and savoury.

IMG_20180429_161041_145
Bread Pudding 4/5

End your meal on a sweet note with the Bread Pudding ($11.90). This comforting homemade bread pudding comes served with a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream & whiskey sauce. A recommended dessert option for the alcoholics, as the whiskey sauce is very thick and rich in taste, that I feel might be a tad too overpowering for the dish.

IMG_20180429_160834_506
Chocolate Brownie 4.2/5

For chocolate lovers, try the Chocolate Brownie ($13.90) which comes in a fudgey chocolate and walnut brownie, and served warm with vanilla ice cream & chocolate sauce.

IMG_20180429_161305_474

These limited time offers are available all day, every day from 30th April to 24th June. Make a date with your Mum and Dad to enjoy this special treat at Morganfield’s.

Ash & Char @ McCallum Street - New Menu with 1-For-1 Steak Promotion

20170706_135946_HDR

Enjoying a double frontage, Ash & Char is a gastro-bar that could be easily spotted the moment you step onto the bustling streets of McCallum Street and Telok Ayer Street. With a new focus on char-grilled steaks, Ash & Char aims to be the place to serve you good quality steaks at affordable prices.

20170706_143313_HDR
Waygu Ribeye MB4 4.2/5

The new steaks-focus menu will feature 3 main cuts - NY Striploin, Ribeye and Tenderloin. Inspired by Chef's recent trip to Tokyo, what's unique about this new concept is that you could order your steak by weight, with a minimum order of 200 grams, priced in the range of 9-14cent per gram. There will be a choice of seasonal special cut every week, as well as seasonal special add-on such as Boston Lobster or King Prawn. Sides such as broccoli, scallops, foie gras or fries are available to make your meal even more wholesome. Mine was a Waygu Ribeye MB4, with add-on foie gras. It was juicy and flavourful, especially so when i dressed it over with a bit of the garlic soy sauce provided. There's wasabi too if you want some extra kick.

20170706_142001_HDR
Signature Char Siew 4/5

Other than mains, small plates are available for sharing, such as Signature Char Siew ($14.00). Great portion for sharing. The charred fats melted easily in my mouth, releasing any flavours that it held within. The meat has yet achieved the melt-in-your-mouth texture but I would say the satisfaction level was there.

20170706_150645_HDR
Brownie Ala Mode 4.5/5

What's good on the hotplate is not just the steak but its sinfully delicious Brownie Ala Mode ($8). A rather peculiar sauce was created for this brownie - Miso Caramel. The umami taste wasn't that distinct till it flowed onto the sizzling hotplate and became thick and sticky. Like soy sauce at the side of claypot, it lent a savoury depth to the sweet chocolate brownie and chocolate sauce. Temperate, texture, taste were all well thought-out, down to the premium vanilla ice cream from New Zealand.

20170706_140807_HDR

Do keep a look out for their new menu. Prelude to their new menu, Ash & Char is going to launch a 1 for 1 steak promotion for dinner this July. Choose from pasture fed ribeye (220g) at $35++ & Black Angus tenderloin (180g), both priced at $35.00++ each.

Birds Of A Feather @ Amoy Street - Spreading Its Wing With An Expanded Menu

3Z5A1100ed

Since the opening of Birds Of A Feather in October last year, the cafe/restaurant has been delighting customers with their Sichuan inspired dishes. Coming 6 April 2017, it will be spreading its wings with an expanded menu.

3Z5A1069ed
Pig Ear Mosaic 4.5/5

One of the new dishes is the Pig Ear Mosaic ($18). The crunchy pig ear is braised in Sichuan braising liquid and served cold with housemade Sichuan red and sour dressing and arrowroot noodle. Its definitely not for the faint hearted with a low tolerant of spicy food. On the hand, the cold and spicy combination has a refreshing finish on top of the spicy kick.

3Z5A1076ed
Baby Octopus 4/5

Inspired from the white pork with garlic sauce, the Baby Octopus ($18) is blanched and served in classic Sichuan white garlic sauce. It is paired with refreshing pickled black fungus and Japanese cucumber for an extra crunch.

3Z5A1085ed
Kawa Ebi Swim in The Chillies 4.5/5

Taking inspiration from their popular La Zhi Ji or Find the Chicken in the Chilli dish, it has created the version 2 substituting the chicken with deep fried river shrimp. The Kawa Ebi Swim in The Chillies ($17) is stir fried with Sichuan pepper, dried chilli, garlic, leek and dou ban jiang. The shrimp seemed to come alive with its crispiness, jumping inside the mouth. I find it very addictive.

3Z5A1088ed
Xiang Su Duck 3.5/5

Serving the duck in two ways is the Xiang Su Duck ($30) which comes with seared braised duck breast and duck leg confit. It is paired with roasted potato puree, Sichuan pickled vegetables, Tian Mian duck jus. A cup of white ginger and pear tea is also served with the dish, a nice little touch to wash down the greasiness. This is only for dinner only.

3Z5A1130ed
Salmon 2 Ways 3.8/5

Another new dinner item is the Salmon 2 Ways ($23). It made a grand entry with a dry ice cloud. The dish may look simple but it made up of many different components. On the left is the salmon tartare served with apple granite with a hint of fresh Sichuan pepper and topped with ikura. I applauded the use of apple granite to give it a refreshing touch. Giving it a contrasting experience of the same ingredient is the cured confit salmon on the right. It is paired with Japanese sweet potatoes, lychee, and roasted bell pepper coulis. I actually did not find the components of the cured confit salmon coming together as a dish but individual they were good.

3Z5A1098ed
Hong Shao Beef Ragout Orecchiette 3.5/5

You would get your normal Italian pasta dishes here such as the Hong Shao Beef Ragout Orecchiette ($26) which comprises of Sichuan style braised beef short ribs, Parmesan foam, spinach, black fungus, pine nut and egg confit. The beef ragout is painstakingly cooked via the traditional Chinese way of marinating the beef with dou ban jiang, chilli, salt, and spices for 3-4 hours and then braised for another 3-4 hours resulting in a flavourful end product that can easily paired with any pasta.

3Z5A1109ed
Big Bird 1st 3.5/5

For the brunch menu, there are also a few new addition. One of them is Big Bird 1st ($25) which is like your big breakfast. It consists of 2 poached egg resting on Englsh muffin, dressed in Mala hollandaise sauce, bacon, sausage and salad. This is a hearty plate but I would like to have more heat in the hollandaise sauce to get that mala kick.

3Z5A1102ed
Bird's Skillet 4/5

The other brunch item on the menu is the Bird's Skillet ($23) which is vibrantly presented. The colorful dish comprises of spicy chorizo, bacon, roasted baby potato, camembert, cheddar, two eggs and pickled red chilli tomato sauce. A dish with multi experience in terms of flavours and textures.

3Z5A1134ed
MonoTone 4/5

Moving on to the desserts, a new creation is the MonoTone ($15). Sesame lovers will adore the dish which represents a sea bed with the black sesame coulis and coral sponge, white sesame parfait and oil powder, sesame sable, light coconut mousse. A satisfying and light dessert to round off the meal.

3Z5A1137ed
GWC (GoodWoodCoffee) Coffee Dessert 4/5

Using their own blend of coffee from China is the GWC (GoodWoodCoffee) Coffee Dessert ($15). The coffee brownies is topped with Tahitian vanilla Chantilly with a candy cloud surrounding it. On the base is coffee soil. A shot of espresso is poured onto the brownie for a bittersweet appreciation. Definitely one for the caffeine lover.

3Z5A1144ed
Glutinous Rice Cake (Savoury Version) 4.5/5

My favourite dessert at Birds Of A Feather has been evolved to a new savoury version. The savory version of the Fried Glutinous Rice Cake ($12) is sprinkled with spicy soy seasoning, pistachio sand, red sugar caramel and pomegranate. The combination definitely has elevated the whole experience. A must try.

Note: This is an invited tasting.
