Xiang Mei Roasted Meat @ Bukit Batok Central - Charcoal Grilled Roasted Duck

IMG_7613ed

The hunt for a good roasted meat stall has brought me to Xiang Mei Roasted Meat at Bukit Batok Central. The stall is located inside S-11 Food House which is a short walk from Bukit Batok MRT station.

IMG_7610ed

We ordered a Trio Platter of Soy Chicken, Roasted Pork and Char Siew  ($7) and a Quarter Duck ($12). The soy chicken is cooked to tender but not the best I have tried. The roasted pork lacked the crispy crackling skin while the char siew is the worst of all. The char siew was dry and lacked any flavours at all.

Roasted Duck 4.5/5

The highlight at Xiang Mei Roasted Meat is their Roasted Duck. It is the reason that brought me to the stall. I actually wanted to order the duck leg only but the stall owner refused to sell me, so I have to get a Quarter Duck ($12). The charcoal grilled roasted duck is not too oily, succulent, and has a nice thin crispy skin with a tad of herbal taste.

Another selling point at Xiang Mei is their complimentary soup. Everyday they will have different soup for their customers. We have Peanut Pork Ribs Soup.

Uncle Chicken Rice @ The Bedok Marketplace

IMG_1353ed

Many of you may still remember the popular Sin Kee Famous Chicken Rice at Margaret Drive Hawker Centre. The former owner's two sons have gone their separate way to open their own chicken rice stall in Mei Ling Food Centre and Alexandra Village Food Centre after Margaret Drive Hawker Centre was demolished to make way for new development. Both of Niven and Benson have since closed their respective stall and work together at Uncle Chicken Rice in The Bedok Marketplace.

IMG_1361ed
Chicken Rice 4.2/5

Both Niven and Benson has worked at their father's stall since young and has inherited his recipe. Until today, they are still using the same old recipe that has made Sin Kee Chicken Rice famous. The poached  chicken is still natural air dried, moist and tender. They are chopped into large pieces for the fullest enjoyment.

IMG_1355ed
Chicken Rice 4.2/5

Besides the cleaning chopping skill that helps to preserve the moisture of the meat, the other condiments that goes along with the chicken rice are good too. The fresh ginger and scallion dip is not something you can common get nowadays. Together with the chilli and sweet dark sauce, this further accentuated the flavour of the chicken and chicken rice.

Niven has also introduced the Lava Egg ($1) at his new stall. Check out the lava eruption when it is cut open.

Hong Kong Style Lo Ding 4.5/5

A must try at Uncle Chicken Rice is their latest creation, the Hong Kong Style Lo Ding ($4). The plate of maggie like noodle cost only a mere four dollar but it is filled to the brim with soy sauce chicken, luncheon meat, lava egg and vegetables. I would recommend tossing the noodles with the ginger and scallions to give it a fuller slurping goodness.

Old Hong Kong Kitchen Home Delivery

Free-Delivery-2-2
I have known of pizza or fast food delivery but restaurant quality Chinese cuisine delivered right to the doorstep is something new. Not known to many, Old Hong Kong Kitchen has recently introduced home delivery with no GST or Service Charge. There is even free delivery if one orders $80 or more in net spending (promotional period). After that a flat rate of $6 for any parts of Singapore.

IMG_0477ed

Browsing through the website, I had a hard time deciding what to order. I was overwhelmed by the number of items available for home delivery. There are more than a hundred food items ranging from appetizers, soup, mains, dessert and even dim sum.

IMG_0462ed
Daily Double Boiled Soup of the Day 4/5

When the Daily Double Boiled Soup of the Day ($6.80) arrived from the delivery, it was still warm. My advice is to heat it up again before consuming to enjoy the full sweetness of the ingredients that has been boiled for hours. Do note that the bowl is rather small portion which is only good for one pax.

IMG_0458ed
Poached Vegetables with Salted Egg & Century Egg in Superior Stock 4.2/5

One of my favourite dishes among the delivery I have ordered is the Poached Vegetables with Salted Egg & Century Egg in Superior Stock ($20). The highlight has to be the superior stock complemented by the salted egg and century egg, giving the whole dish a boost in flavours and enjoyment.

IMG_0465ed
Soon Hock Fish 3.8/5

When I saw they offered steamed fish in their delivery menu, I got me some what excited. I wonder how they going to manage the doneness of the fish as consideration has to be put in on the journey time. I ordered the Soon Hock Fish ($54) in Hong Kong Style. The sauce of the fish is delivered separately, to be poured over the fish before consuming. The fish itself was cooked to a nice moist and tender texture considering the among of time it has left the kitchen to my home. Of course it can't be compared to having a la minute steamed fish served from the kitchen to the table in the restaurant.

IMG_0471ed
BBQ Meat Platter (3 Types) 4/5

Last but not least, I decided to wrap up my first Chinese home delivery meal with a 3 types of BBQ Meat Platter ($48) which is good to served 4-6 pax. I decided to go for the Roasted Duck, Soya Sauce Chicken and Sio Bak. The roasts were all chopped to a nice generous portion. My favourite among the 3 different roasts is the roasted duck.

IMG_0474ed

Overall I find the Old Hong Kong Kitchen Chinese food home delivery offers a alternative choice to your usual pizza or fast food. With more than 100 over food items in their delivery menu, there is so much choices, imagine you can even enjoy dim sum in the comfort of your home.

Joyden Canton Kitchen (欣艺和) @ HillV2 Shopping Centre (Upper Bukit Timah)

IMG_7169ed

It is double happiness for Joyden as the family restaurant celebrates its tenth anniversary. With the re-branding the restaurant from former West Coast Seafood to Joyden Seafood Restaurant (欣艺海鲜), the restaurant opens its second outlet, Joyden Canton Kitchen (欣艺和) at HillV2 Shopping Centre offering wholesome comfort Cantonese cuisine.

IMG_7133ed
Crispy Golden Lotus Root Chips 4.2/5

We started with some Crispy Golden Lotus Root Chips ($8,80) while waiting for the rest of the group to arrive. Sliced to a nice thin bite and deep fried to crispy crunch, this is as good as your potato chips. Maybe the restaurant should consider selling it for Chinese New Year.

IMG_7136ed
Chicken with Fresh Huai Shan and Wolfberry in Old Coconut Soup 4/5

Cantonese cuisine is known for its soup and the restaurant does live up to the expectation with the Chicken with Fresh Huai Shan and Wolfberry in Old Coconut Soup ($12.80) which is a Foshan classic interpretation. The ingredients were steamed in an old coconut over low heat for up to 3 hours to extract the essence. Result in a light but yet aromatic soup with natural sweetness from the coconut.

IMG_7139ed
Joyden Signature Soy Sauce Chicken 4/5

One of the signature items at Joyden Canton Kitchen is the Joyden Signature Soy Sauce Chicken ($12/$18/$32). The chicken was steeped in a secret blend of superior light sauce and herbs giving it that pleasant flavour on top of their silky skin and tender meat.

IMG_7144ed
Signature Traditional Hakka Salt Poached Farm Chicken 3/5

Another poultry dish on the menu is the Traditional Hakka Salt Poached Farm Chicken ($17) which is accompanied with the secret recipe ginger sauce. Compared to the soy sauce chicken, this is not as flavourful. However the saving grace was the ginger sauce that accentuated the whole enjoyment. It was so good that the table ordered extra servicing to go with their plain rice.

IMG_7147ed
Fish Maw and Prawns with Glass Noodles in Homemade XO Sauce 4.5/5

One of my favourite dishes is the Fish Maw and Prawns with Glass Noodles in Homemade XO Sauce ($18.80). The luxurious fish maw and prawns were well coated with the premium xo sauce that brought out the best of the ingredients. Even the glass noodles were well infused with the xo sauce which was fragrant and slurping good.

IMG_7150ed
Sliced Grouper Fillet with Pine Mushroom and Black Fungus in Rice Wine Broth 3/5

The Sliced Grouper Fillet with Pine Mushroom and Black Fungus in Rice Wine Broth ($17.80) was a comforting pot of goodness that is perfect for cold raining day.

IMG_7151ed
Braised Homemade Beancurd Coin with Poached Shanghai Baby Cabbage 4.2/5

For me the highlight of the Braised Homemade Beancurd Coin with Poached Shanghai Baby Cabbage ($14.80) is the milky broth and shanghai baby cabbage. The milky broth was made from boiling pork bones for several hours. The shanghai baby cabbage which was steamed in pork broth was so soft and sweet that literally melted in the mouth.

IMG_7154ed
Braised Pork Ribs in Aged Mandarin Peel Sauce 4.5/5

We commonly find on the menu coffee or champagne pork ribs but at Joyden Canton Kitchen seeks to be different with the Braised Pork Ribs in Aged Mandarin Peel Sauce ($16.80). After much trial and effort, the refreshing spin to the pork ribs dish was well received by the group. The flavours were well balanced with fall off the bone meat.

IMG_7155ed
Traditional Rice Vermicelli with Poached Egg White, Crabmeat and Scallop 4.5/5

A must try at Joyden Canton Kitchen is the Traditional Rice Vermicelli with Poached Egg White, Crabmeat and Scallop ($15.80). This is something new and currently not seen elsewhere. The wok fried vermicelli tossed in the poached egg white, crabmeat and dried scallop was finished with a swirl of vinegar and a dash of pepper. This is one dish that I would go back for.

There is this saying among the foodie friends, in the east there is Diamond Kitchen while in the west we have Joyen. After dining at Joyden Canton Kitchen, I can't help comparing another similarity. While Diamond Kitchen has the popular superior stock clam bee hoon, Joyden Canton Kitchen has the traditional rice vermicelli with poached egg white, crabmeat and scallop. I am glad I have dined in both restaurants.

Teck Kee Wanton Mee @ Tanjong Pagar Plaza

IMG_5395ed

My wife has been telling me about this Wanton Mee stall at Tanjong Pagar Plaza so on a fine weekday afternoon I made my way down to check out Teck Kee Wanton Mee which my wife has been raving about. We arrived slightly after the lunch hour which was a blessing as I needed not queue for my food and even the stall lady offered to deliver my food to my table.

IMG_5398ed
Wanton Mee 3.8/5

My wife ordered the Wanton Mee ($3) which comes with a couple of char siew and a bowl of soup with 2 wantons inside. The char siew was dry and the wanton was quite pedestrian. However, what stood out was the springy, semi firm noodles with a nice bite. The texture is sort of a in between of the maggie mee noodle and Hong Kong style wanton mee noodle. The sauce also remembered me of Kok Kee, which I thought was pretty similar. The other bonus is the free flow pork lard.

IMG_5402ed
Signature Wanton Mee 4/5

I went for the Signature Wanton Mee ($4) which has additional fried dumpling and soy sauce chicken. I felt that the tender soy sauce chicken fair much better than the char siew which was on the dry side. The flavour was also there. The fried dumpling was also worth mentioning. Unlike the using minced pork stuffing, these are stuffed with fish paste.

IMG_5406ed
Vegetable 2.5/5

We also ordered a plate of Vegetable ($3) to go along with our lunch. We wanted to have a cleaner diet but the greens was unfortunately on the oily side.

After checking out Teck Kee Wanton Mee, I can understand why it has a group of fans. The noodle is definitely the star of the dish. If they are willing to spend more effort on the roast and wanton, I am sure it has the potential to become one of the best wanton mee in town.

Original Chiew Kee Noodle House @ Upper Cross Street

IMG_4073ed

I have been wanting to try the Soy Sauce Chicken along Upper Cross Street for the most time. When I reached the place, I was thrown in a dilemma. There are two Soy Sauce Chicken eatery along Upper Cross Street, Chew Kee and Chiew Kee. Which should I go? That is when the handy smartphone comes in play and we searched online for the answer. In exact fact, a quarrel between the elder sis and younger brother resulted in the split. The elder sis remains at the original stall at 8 Upper Cross Street while the younger brother relocated further down the road at 32 Upper Cross Street. It seems like the voices online favour the younger brother's stall more which is Original Chiew Kee Noodle House.

IMG_4076ed
Yellow Egg Noodle 4/5

IMG_4082ed
Kway Teow 3.5/5

We ordered the Soy Sauce Chicken Yellow Egg Noodle ($3.50) and Soy Sauce Chicken Kway Teow ($3.50). It is usually served with the chicken on top of the noodles but we have requested it to be separated. I like the yellow egg noodle more for its springy texture and delightful bite.

IMG_4074ed
Soy Sauce Chicken 4.2/5

The star has to be the Soy Sauce Chicken. The light brown chicken skin was well infused with the soy sauce sweetness and the chicken was really moist and tender. Even the sauce itself has a nice subtle sweetness from the soy sauce but not overpowering.

IMG_4079ed
Dumpling Soup 3.5/5

I also ordered an extra bowl of Dumpling Soup ($5) to go with the noodles. The dumpling is of decent size and stuffed with delectable fillings.

IMG_4068ed

Throughout my meal at Original Chiew Kee Noodle House, I have observed the uncle behind the stall chopping non stop. It was quite amusing to see the number of chicken he has chopped. Their business is really good with constant stream of customers. Good thing is they have 2nd floor seating too.
