Guan's Mee Pok @ Clementi West Street 2 - Another Mee Pok Master Has Moved Into The West

3Z5A1359ed

With Ah Hoe Mee Pok which is run by Mr Naoji's son at block 713 Clementi West Street 2 moving to Cantonment Road, another mee pok stall has moved in. It is non other than Guan's Mee Pok, who used to partner with Ah Hoe Mee Pok's founder, Eric Chia who is the is the master of Mr Naoji, the Japanese Mee Pok man that you probably have seen in different media platforms.

3Z5A1361ed
Guan's Mee Pok with Yakitori 4.2/5

A basic bowl at Guan's Mee Pok starts from Guan's Mee Pok with Yakitori ($5). The bowl of noodle comprises of chicken yakitori, minced pork, fried fish ball, tamago egg, fish maw and the al dentle noodle which was cooked to precision using a timer.

3Z5A1364ed
Meat Platties with Chicken Soup 3.5/5

Unfortunately the Fish Maw Soup was sold out so I decided to go for the Meat Platties with Chicken Soup ($4.50) instead. The clear soup was light and refreshing with crunchy greens. The meat patties was enjoyable but nothing much to shout about.

3Z5A1355ed
Guan's Mee Pork with Squid 4.5/5

For a more premium enjoyable, I had the Guan's Mee Pork with Squid ($9). Like the basic bowl, it comes with chicken yakitori, minced pork, fried fish ball, tamago egg, fish maw with the addition of poached squid. Besides the springy noodle texture, the chilli-vinegar sauce perfumed by the used of dried sole fish and pork lard, gives the noodle a coat of slurping goodness. You are also free to add more vinegar if you prefer a more acidic sharpness.

Boat Quay (Original) Mushroom Noodle @ Punggol - Finally A Good Bak Chor Mee Stall In Punggol

3Z5A0607ed

Too many times I have heard from my friends that there is no good food in Punggol. I was quite excited when my foodie friends asked me to check out Boat Quay (Original) Mushroom Noodle at Sumang Link, Punggol which has moved from its previous location in Bukit Batok to the current location at G7 coffeeshop.

3Z5A0609ed
Signature Noodle 4.2/5

We tried the Signature Noodle ($5) which consists of fishball, meatball, pork slices, mushroom and teochew dumpling. Both the fishball and meatball were huge and bouncy. The noodle is on the softer side which still retained a good bite to it. Unfortunately I felt that the chilli sauce still lack a bit of punch to it. If not it would be perfect.

3Z5A0602ed
Teochew Dumpling 4.5/5

The highlight at Boat Quay (Original) Mushroom Noodle is the homemade Teochew dumpling which is bursting with flavours accentuated by the tee poh in the minced meat stuffing wrapped in a soft dumpling skin. A must try here.

3Z5A0617ed
Fishball Noodle Soup  4/5

For something light you can go for the Fishball Noodle Soup ($3/$4/$5) which comes in a light but flavourful broth with a huge bouncy fishballs made from yellowtail fish.

3Z5A0596ed

From our brief conversation with Uncle Lim, I gathered the reason for the stall's name because his grandfather used to sell the dish in Boat Quay. Back then it was operated from a push cart. Uncle Lim learnt the skills from his grandfather and opened his first stall at Ang Mo Kio in 1984. After operating in Ang Mo Kio for 10 years, he moved to Defu, Chevron House, Singapore Shopping Centre and Bukit Batok before settling at the current location.

San Yuan Fishball Meatball Noodles @ Albert Centre Food Centre - Fishball Noodle At Only $2

IMG_4624ed

It is not hard to notice San Yuan Fishball Meatball Noodles at Albert Centre Food Centre with its bright red colour sign board which stands out among the stalls in the hawker centre. San Yuan has several outlets around the island selling fishball noodle, minced meat noodle and laksa.

IMG_4628ed
Fishball Noodle 4/5

A bowl of Fishball Noodle at San Yuan costs only $2. In this era, such pricing is almost non existence. The bowl of noodle comes with six bouncy and springy fish ball. Although not huge but it was enjoyable. While its only $2, it did not compromise in taste. The noodle was also cooked to an enjoyable al dente bite.

IMG_4631ed

The other reason why I think San Yuan has its own fan base is not just because of its pricing but the chilli sauce too. The sauce carries a savoury and robust flavour that complemented the noodles excellently.

Ding Ji Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle @ Bishan Street 22 - A Hearty Bowl of Fish Maw Soup With Noodle

IMG_1001ed

I was introduced to Ding Ji Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle at Bishan Street after hearing it from Maureen aka MissTamchiak when she discovered the stall. Things then went viral and queue started to form at the stall with waiting time up to 2 hours. The good thing is that this place is opened around the clock, 24 hour. So I was able to check out the place in the wee hours when it was not as crowded.

IMG_1003ed
Fish Maw Soup Noodle 4/5

I had the most expensive item on the menu which is the what I came for, the Fish Maw Soup with Noodle ($8). The bowl of noodle comes with a lot of ingredients such as fish ball, dumpling, pork slices, liver, mushrooms, egg and fish maw.

IMG_1007ed
Fish Maw Soup Noodle 4/5

Besides the generous amount of ingredients, the other highlight is the robust soup. The soup based was sweet and came with a subtle taste of Ti Poh or dried sole fish. That provided the soul for the bowl. While the Seng Kee version with its strong Ti Poh flavoured soup hits you like a tank, the version here is more gentle and it a way more balanced. So it really is subject to individual preference and palate.

IMG_1012ed
Bak Chor Mee Dry 2.5/5

Since I have came all the way to check out the stall, I might as well made the best of my trip. Hence I ordered another bowl of Bak CHor Mee Dry to try. Unfortunately it was a disappointment. The chilli and vinegar sauce did not carry any weight at all to match the noodles. It was rather lacklustre.

If you like to check out the stall, I would recommend going for the fish maw soup as this is the highlight here. The other noodle dishes are ready so so. To be fair, don't let the waiting time and personal preference distort your judgement. To me this is a hearty and comfortable bowl of fish maw soup that I have enjoyed and I would go back again for it.

Ah Kow Mushroom Minced Pork Mee @ Bukit Batok Street 31 - Famous Bak Chor Mee Stall Opens In The West

IMG_8698ed

Recently I got to know that a popular Bak Chor Mee has opened in the West at Bukit Batok, so I made my way down to Ah Kow Mushroom Minced Pork Mee to check it personally. Apparently this is the famous stall that used to be at Hong Lim Food Centre which started in 1945. When the founder passed on, his elder son and 4th son took over the stall. The elder son will mend the stall on Fridays to Mondays while the 4th son will take over on Tuesdays to Thursdays.

IMG_8697ed

According to social media postings by Jon Cher, the son of Mr Kow's 4th son, we got to know that his father was kicked out from the Hong Lim Food Centre. His father subsequently rent a stall at Old Airport Food Centre before the landlord sold it away. After taking two years break, his father has made a come back at the new stall in bukit batok.

IMG_8692ed
Bak Chor Mee Dry 3/5

From the appearance of the bowl of noodles, I thought I have found a gem. Unfortunately I was disappointed. The flavour did not live up to the appearance. The Bak Chor Mee Dry ($4/$5/$6) although comes with a lot of ingredients, it lacked the vinegar kick I was looking for. Afterwards, we feedback to the stall owner and he told us he has to reduce the vinegar as the new neighbourhood does not like it. Hence in your next visit, you probably has to tell the stall owner you want more vinegar, just like Hong Lim Food Centre days.

IMG_8689ed
Kway Teow Soup 3.8/5

The Kway Teow Soup ($4/$5/$6) was much better. The soup has a subtle flavour from the sole fish which gave justice to the generous bowl of ingredients accompanying it. It brought live to the bowl of noodles.

IMG_1633ed

We ordered the $4 portion and the bowl of noodle already is brimming with ingredients. Imagine if you order the bigger portion. I am not sure is it because the stall owner has taken a two years' break and he needed a bit more time to get back to his rhythm.

Chai Chee Teochew Bak Chor Mee @ 7 Starts Coffeeshop (Dover Crescent)

IMG_7163ed

During my visit to Grill Werkz at Dover Crescent, I noticed Chai Chee Teochew Bak Chor Mee has also opened in the same coffeeshop. I was told that at its peak, there were around 20 stalls around Singapore. After disappearing from the scene for a while, it seems like it is making another come back with a few stalls already springing out at various part of Singapore.

IMG_7164ed
Bak Chor Mee 3/5

I was lucky to spot the owner at the new stall at dover crescent, hence we requested him to cook our bowl of noodle because we heard about the inconsistency if it is cooked by his staff. The noodles indeed was nicely cooked to an al dente texture, with an enjoyable bite to it.

IMG_7166ed

While the noodles are perfectly executed and also comes with generous toppings such as fishball, fish dumpling, fish cake, mushroom and minced meat, the bowl of noodles lacked depth and missing the vinegar punch I like for my bak chor mee.

Yan Kee (炎记) Noodle House @ South Bridge Road - 24 Hour Bak Chor MeeSua

IMG_6589ed

While Singapore is known as a food paradise, it is actually quite hard to find a supper place. Most places are usually closed by 10pm. If you like bak chor mee, let me introduce you to Yan Kee (炎记) Noodle House at the junction of South Bridge Road and Circular Road which is opened 24 hour.

IMG_6586ed
Dry Bak Chor Mee Sua 4.2/5

Besides the fact that it is opened 24 hour, this is where you can find a special bowl of Dry Bak Chor Mee Sua ($4). The delicious bowl of mee sua comes with minced pork, lean pork, meatball, mushroom, ikan bilis and lots of vinegar.

IMG_6587ed
Dry Bak Chor Mee Sua 4.2/5

Actually not many places offers bak chor mee sua. Usually it only comes with mee pok or mee kia. I guess probably its because it is not easy to cook mee sua. If overcooked, it will become gluey and soggy. Cost could be another fact. However I personally like mee sua over mee pok and mee kia because it is a better sponge to soak up the tanginess of the vinegar.

IMG_6582ed

During my visit around 10pm, the stall was mend by a younger man cooking the mee sua. My mee sua unfortunate was a bit lumpy. I was told that there is a uncle who cooks a better bowl of mee sua and he usually works in the morning. I look forward in my next visit to try the uncle's cooking and compare the different.

58 Minced Meat Noodle @ Taman Jurong Food Centre

IMG_5499ed

My hunt for great hawker food in the West has brought me to Taman Jurong Food Centre. I made some research online and many reviews directed me to 58 Minced Meat Noodle located at the 3 storey food centre on the third level. Taking the escalator up to the third level, I was received by a long queue of patrons, queuing at 58 Minced Meat Noodle. It is not hard to miss the stall as it is just beside the escalator and it always have a queue.

IMG_2957ed
Bak Chor Mee 4.5/5

The Bak Chor Mee ($2.50/$3/$3.50) is quite generous with its ingredients. There are minced pork, lean pork, pork lard, mushroom and pig liver. The bowl of noodle does not come with vinegar. Patron can self help to it, for your own preference.

IMG_2962ed
Bak Chor Mee 4.5/5

Compared to many other noodle stalls, the mee pok noodle here is on the softer side but not those soggy type. It still comes with a nice bite. A lot of the reviews mentioned that they do not like the soft texture but I am perfectly ok with it. In fact I actually enjoyed it.

IMG_2966ed
Bak Chor Mee 4.5/5

The other highlight of 58 Minced Meat Noodle's bak chor mee is the chilli sauce. The chilli sauce has a good spicy kick to it that goes very well with the noodle. 58 Minced Meat Noodle is definitely one of my favourite bak chor mee now.

Ah Hoe Mee Pok (阿和面薄) @ Clementi West Street 2

IMG_2477ed

If the East has Bedok 85 Bak Chor Mee, Central has Seng Kee Mushroom Minced Pork Noodles, I would proudly say we at the West has Ah Hoe Mee Pok (阿和面薄). Recently, Ah Hoe Mee Pok has gotten some attention from the blogsphere not just because of the Japanese behind the stall cooking the mee pok but its delicious bowl of mee pok cooked to a nice al dente too.

IMG_2484ed

Some interesting fact about Ah Hoe Mee Pok. In the early days, Mr Kuribaba started a Japanese stall at the current coffeeshop beside Ah Hoe Mee Pok. Fascinated by the way Mr Eric Chia cooked his mee pok, Mr Kuribaba who used to work in a ramen stall in Japanese started apprenticing at Ah Hoe Mee Pok for half a year before taking over the stall in January 2015. He then closed his own Japanese stall. Currently Mr Kuribaba runs the stall with his daughter at block 710 while his son and wife runs another stall at block 713 just a few blocks away.

IMG_2479ed
Special Mee Pok Dry  3.5/5

At Ah Hoe Mee Pok, there are a few selections on their menu. Customers have a choice of ordering the Special Mee Pok Dry/Soup ($4/$5), Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle ($4/$5), Crayfish Mee Pok ($10), Meatball Soup ($3) or Teochew Dumpling Soup ($4)

IMG_2485ed
Special Mee Pok Dry 3.5/5

I have a bowl of the Special Mee Pok Dry ($4) which comes with a prawm, meatballs, abalone slices, minced pork and pork slices. The highlight in the bowl has to be the al dente mee pok that is cooked to a nice springy bite. However I find that the chilli sauce lacked the kick I was expecting and the vinegar does not have that tanginess.

IMG_2482ed
Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle Soup 4.5/5

To me the best try at Ah Hoe Mee Pok is not their dry noodles but their soup version. I would highly recommend trying the Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle Soup ($4). First, I think the soup version showcases the springy mee pok even more.

IMG_2475ed
Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle Soup 4.5/5

Second, the soup was flavourful and robust. If Seng Kee's soup hits you like a tank with the rich Ti Poh (dried sole fish) flavour, Ah Hoe's soup base is more refine and balance. I felt that this is because of the addition of cabbage, giving it that harmony.

Kim Bak Chor Mee (金肉脞面) @ Balestier Road

IMG_7938ed

After Tony aka JohorKaki blog about Kim Bak Chor Mee, I made my way down to Kim Bak Chor Mee at Balestier Road to check out the stall that serves one of Singapore's favourite food. Accordingly to Tony's blog, the stall uncle (Mr Ng) eats his own noodles everyday, that is what he learnt from his master. This is to ensure he likes his own food before servicing it to others. Unfortunately I did not get to sight the uncle doing so but I do get to have a brief chat with him. He recited the same teaching from his master.

IMG_7947ed
Bak Chor Mee 4/5

Unlike most stalls, the Bak Chor Mee here is served as such that the ingredients are separated from the noodles with the minced pork, lean pork, pork balls and pork liver in the soup bowl. As to ensure that the ingredients are not overcooked in the bowl of delectable soup, I was advised to quickly transfer the ingredients over to the bowl of noodles.

IMG_7948ed
Bak Chor Mee 4/5

IMG_7951ed

As you can see from the bowl of noodles filled is filled to the brim with ingredients. A worthy note is the mushroom. The mushroom is thickly sliced, well braised and has a nice bouncy texture. This bowl of slurping goodness uses little vinegar unlike the popular Tai Hwa allowing one to appreciate the aroma from the pork lard more.

IMG_7950ed
Bak Chor Mee 4/5

The bowl of noodles may not wow in you an instant, you need to toss the noodle together with the specially made chilli sauce to slowly appreciate how the different components come together making it a good bowl of bak chor mee. I would say it has a more rustic taste compare to many other places where the flavours are more robust.

IMG_7940ed

Mr Ng aka Mr Bak Kut has been in the trade since the age of 11, he is now in his 60s. He is better known as the founder of the popular Sing Hing Seafood Bak Kut Teh stall from the demolished Lakeview Food Centre near MacRitchie reservoir. That is also how he got his nickname Mr Bak Kut.

Mr Bean @ Bedok Mall

IMG_0910ed

I am actually quite excited drafting this article because I have chanced upon a discovery that I am very eager to share with my fellow foodies. Not only that, I would say it was a discovery that will change the whole appreciation of the traditional beancurd. Move aside chilled beancurd, the next in thing is savoury beancurd. Mr Bean a household name in the local food and beverage scene has created this new and unique savoury beancurd inspired simply by our local hawker fare, Bak Chor Mee taking the traditional dessert to a whole new level.

IMG_0938ed
Signature Savoury Beancurd 香辣鸡肉脞拌豆花 4.5/5

Mr Bean's Signature Savoury Beancurd ($3.50) is a hot beancurd dessert topped with ingredients such as minced chicken, mushroom, chilli oil, fried shallots, vegetarian floss and vinegar. It somewhat tastes like mapo tofu initially but as the vinegar hits the palate, the picture of a bowl of bak chor mee minus noodle sets in. Interestingly, I felt like I was having tofu instead of beancurd without noticing the soya flavour, probably covered by the flavourful chilli oil and vinegar. The signature savoury beancurd itself can be quite heavy and filling, so it is better to share. In my humble opinion Mr Bean needs to have a more catchy English name for the beancurd as the current name is too generic and does not really represent the dish unlike the Chinese name of the beancurd.

IMG_0932ed
8 Treasure Beancurd 八宝豆花 4.2/5

The other hot beancurd dessert introduced by Mr Bean's new dessert concept store at Bedok Mall is the 8 Treasure Beancurd ($3.30). This is a sweet dessert with 8 different types of beans. The bowl of warm beancurd comes with red beans, green beans, lotus seeds, yellow beans, great lima beans, red kidney beans, barley and peanuts. It is very comforting that comes with different bites of textures that will be enjoyed by both young and old.

IMG_0913ed
Pearly Mango Paradise 3.5/5

Moving on to some cold desserts at the new Mr Bean's dessert concept store, there is the Pearly Mango Paradise ($4.50) that comes with a soya pudding buried underneath the mango chunks, pearls and pomelo pulps. A refreshing dessert that comes with delightful chewy bites. Probably due to the season or the species of mango used, it fell short of the sweetness I was looking for.

IMG_0922ed
Tango Twist 2.8/5

The other cold dessert without soya is the Tango Twist ($4) that is a rendition of the popular mango sago dessert. In my opinion this is the weakest link. I could tell that the mango puree was substituted with syrup which is a disappointment.

IMG_0920ed
Three's A Crowd 三色小圆冰 4/5

An interesting name for a dessert, Three's A Crowd ($4) which comes with specially made grass jelly topped with red beans, soft peanuts and black chewy pearls. The goodness of grass jelly with its hint of herbal taste can be quite boring and flat if to be consumed by itself. Usually the local likes to have it mixed with soya milk or served with longan. Given a little twist, Mr Bean's new creation allows one to enjoy the grass jelly with delightful bites of texture. As there is a layer of crushed ice underneath the ingredients to keep it chilled, my advice is to give it a good mix before consuming to have a bit of everything with each spoonful.

IMG_0929ed
Tang Yuan 汤圆 4/5

At the new dessert concept store, Mr Bean has injected a playful element to the tradition Tang Yuan ($3.30). The usual choice of rice dumpling filing of peanut or black sesame is the same but now in addition of that, one gets a choice of 3 different coating that is available in Peanut, Black & White Sesame and Kinako.

IMG_0931ed
Tang Yuan 汤圆 4/5

Now there is 2 ways of eating the Tang Yuan. One can choose to have it original or roll the Tang Yuan in the preferred choice of coating. One tradition, two ways of eating.

IMG_0940ed
Ice Blended Yuzu Soya Milk 4.2/5

In conjunction with Chinese New Year, Mr Bean has also rolled out the Ice Blended Yuzu Soya Milk ($3/$3.5) for a limited period. The refreshing Yuzu flavoured ice blended soya milk comes with little popping suprises of pineapple pearls making it a auspicious and fun drink.

Mr Bean's latest dessert concept store at Bedok Mall offers a dine in area for patrons to enjoy the new range of sweet and savoury desserts in a refreshing different way. Great news to the fans of SG Food on Foot who quote '我爱甜品' at Mr Bean's Bedok Mall dessert concept store ONLY, gets to purchase a 1-for-1 dessert* (*free dessert redeemed has to be of a lower price than the purchased dessert). Offer is only valid from 1-31 January 2014. Do not miss the opportunity to check out the new desserts!
