Oriole Coffee + Bar @ Pan Pacific Serviced Suites Orchard - A Cafe by Day, A Bar by Dusk, All In the Heart of Bustling Town

IMG_2698

Since its establishment in 2008, Oriole Coffee + Bar in Somerset has been serving diners with their freshly brewed speciality coffee and cafe classics in the day. It transforms into a bar in the evening, with a diverse selection of house-pour wines, beers, interesting cocktails, and hearty dishes - all the good ingredients for a place to unwind and relax for the night.

IMG_2597

From 21 August to 31 October 2023, Oriole is introducing their "Oriole's Summer Specials", showcasing a number of new menu offerings and refreshing cocktails that were concocted in collaboration with Tanqueray. Some of these dishes include the Veggie Puttanesca Pizza, Acqua Pazza Barramundi and Donut Balls.

IMG_2600

The cafe has both indoor and outdoor seats, each providing its unique vibe.

IMG_2696
Truffle Fries 4.2/5

Before taking our seats, we spotted Truffle Fries ($15) on almost every other table. While this starter was slightly pricey, we thoroughly enjoyed the fries' consistent crunch and fluffy interior.

IMG_2697
Shrimp-paste Marinated Chicken Wings with Bali Rub 4.5/5

These Shrimp-paste Marinated Chicken Wings ($16) left a huge impression! Following the recommendation of our friendly waitress, we opted for our wings with an additional Bali Rub (+$1.90). The piping hot wings arrived coated in a slick, sweet sauce. The crunch was on point, and the meat remained wonderfully juicy. If you're feeling adventurous, consider adding the Butter Sriracha (+$1.90) for a unique twist.

IMG_2699
Veggie Puttanesca Pizza 3.8/5

Our first main was the Veggie Puttanesca Pizza ($22), featuring an all-vegetable assortment of toppings on a base decked with puttanesca sauce. It includes Kalamata olives, capsicum, Roma tomatoes, button mushrooms, yellow onions and arugula. The base leans a little more dry and biscuity.

IMG_2700
Acqua Pazza Barramundi 4/5

Our next main dish was the Acqua Pazza Barramundi ($28), which highlighted the freshness of the protein. It was marinated with extra virgin olive oil and thyme before being poached in a tomato-based sauce.

IMG_2701
Donut Balls 3.8/5

Oriole's house-made Donut Balls ($15) are freshly fried upon order and come accompanied by a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was decorated with crumbles and blueberries and served with sweet blueberries and date compote. However, despite the decently satisfying crunch on the outside, the centre was too doughy for our liking.

IMG_2695
Mango Berry Sunset

From the special cocktail menu curated in collaboration with Tanqueray, we sampled the refreshing Mango Berry Sunset ($20). It was a very bright concoction, both visually and in taste, with its mix of Tanqueray London Dry, Raspberry Puree, Lemon Juice and Mango.

Do make a reservation before visiting. You can do so easily at https://www.oriole.com.sg/reservations.

Konyo @ Cuppage Terrace - Exploring Authentic Filipino Flavours in the Heart of Orchard Road

Konyo-28

In my quest to uncover the vibrant world of Filipino cuisine, I found myself at Konyo, nestled amidst the bustling Orchard Road at Cuppage Terrace. With a craving for something new and exciting, I gathered my foodie friends to explore this modest haven that promised a specially curated selection of Filipino delights.

Konyo-4
Cheese Sticks 3/5

To kick off our culinary adventure, we dived into the appetising world of Cheese Sticks ($8). These golden-brown wonders were a true delight – crispy, wanton-like skin enveloping oozing cheese within. The symphony of textures was made even more melodious with the accompaniment of mentaiko sauce, creating a satisfying balance of flavours.

Konyo-17
Sisig Manileno 3.5/5

Our journey through Filipino cuisine continued with the Sisig Manileno ($18), a renowned street food sensation. Served sizzling hot, this dish was an orchestra of bold flavours and intriguing textures. Chopped pig parts and chicken liver danced with a spicy sour dressing, creating an unforgettable symphony for the taste buds. The only note slightly off-key was its saltiness, a minor hiccup in an otherwise harmonious composition.

Konyo-26
Tilapia with Ensalada Espesyal 4/5

For those craving a wholesome sharing experience, the Tilapia with Ensalada Espesyal ($32) was an excellent choice. The whole fried tilapia took centre stage, accompanied by a medley of boiled okra, sweet potato leaves, fried eggplant, and a refreshing onion and tomato salad. This dish was a balanced diet on a platter, with an array of greens and flavours. The homemade bagoong isda – a type of fish paste – added a unique Filipino touch to the ensemble.

Konyo-14
Liempo Inasal 4.2/5

The Liempo Inasal ($16) showcased Filipino grilling expertise. The pork belly is marinated with calamansi juice, ginger, garlic, lemongrass, and coconut vinegar. It is grilled to tender, succulent, and kissed by the smokiness of the grill. Each bite was a delightful journey through layers of flavours, leaving a memorable imprint on the palate.

Konyo-10
Chicken Inasal 4.5/5

However, the true star of the show was the Chicken Inasal ($18 Half/ $32 Whole). The chicken showcased the pinnacle of Filipino grilling prowess and was marinated using the same blend of calamansi juice, ginger, garlic, lemongrass, and coconut vinegar. The flavours seemed to have seeped deeper into the chicken meat, creating an irresistible symphony that captured the essence of Filipino cuisine. This dish emerged as a clear favourite among our party, a testament to its impeccable execution and rich flavours.

In conclusion, Konyo at Cuppage Terrace serves as a gateway to the diverse world of Filipino cuisine. While some minor notes might have missed their mark, the overall harmony of flavours and textures made this culinary exploration memorable. With its specially curated selection of Filipino dishes, Konyo offers a glimpse into the heart and soul of the Philippines right in the heart of Orchard Road.

Armoury Steakhouse @ Orchard Central - Exclusive Big Cuts and Beer O'Clock Promotion

IMG_6857

Armoury Steakhouse at Orchard Central takes pride in its exceptional offering of big cuts for its steaks. From solo cuts of 250g to 2.2kg Tomahawk, the menu is designed to create a feast for meat lovers. An exclusive Beer O'Clock promotion has also been launched to complete the experience!

IMG_6862
AUS Wagyu Ribeye 4/5

IMG_6852

One of their most popular cuts, AUS Wagyu Ribeye for 2, weighing 500g, is now available at a promotional price of $68 (U.P $100). It also comes with 2 sides of your choice. The recommended doneness is medium rare, and ours came blushing in pink with a nicely charred exterior.

IMG_6846
Bacon Mac & Cheese 4/5

There are also premium sides for add-ons. Bacon Mac & Cheese (+$9) was creamy and comforting, with the macaroni evenly coated in melted cheese. The bacon bits accented the dish with a smoky and savoury note, which added a detectable contrast to the creamy moussels.

IMG_6826
Truffle Fries 3.8/5

We also tried a side dish Truffle Fries ($15). The texture of the fries was good, carrying the aroma of truffle.

IMG_6833

For their exclusive Beer O'Clock promotion - From lunch until 4pm, the beers are available at just $3 per pint. As the day progresses, the prices increase gradually, with pints available at $4 from 4pm, $5 from 5pm, $6 from 6pm, and $7 per pint until 8pm.

EatAlley @ Orchard Gateway - A Malaysian Food Court Featuring Popular KL Street Food Brands

EatAlley11

EatAlley, located in basement 2 of Orchard Gateway, is Orchard's latest Malaysian food theme foodcourt. This 150-seater houses 8 top KL street food brands- Koon Kee Wanton Mee, Hong Lai Hokkien Mee, Siong Huat Bah Kut Teh, Kam Heong Braised Duck, Soong Kee Beef Noodle, Fatty Nasi Lemak, and Restoran Chuan Huat.

EatAlley3

Kampung Nasi Lemak (adapted for EatAlley) - Founded a decade ago, the Malaysian founder, nicknamed Fatty, has been making nasi lemak kukus the old-fashioned way using wooden steamers. So here we have the signature dish - Nasi Lemak with Ayam Rempah, complete with fried ikan bilis, peanuts, sunny side up egg and sambal ($8.80), finished with a ladle of curry sauce doused over. The rice was incredibly fragrant and fluffy, making it a perfect match with the robust sauce and sambal. The fried chicken leg had a good crunch on the outside, with the meat tender and juicy. We also had a serving of Beef Rendang that was pleasingly tender.

EatAlley9

Kam Heong Braised Duck - Established in 1976 by Tan Boon Seong, the Teochew-style Braised Duck is cooked with eight herbs. The duck meat carried a light herbal fragrance and was at its right tenderness, and the sauce left a delectable lingering herbaceous aftertaste.

EatAlley14

Koon Kee Wanton Mee (adapted for EatAlley) - Established in the 1940s on Petaling Street in Kuala Lumpur, their thin egg noodles, minced pork wanton and roasted char siew are prepared and cooked in-house. We had the Signature Duo Combo of Char Siew, "Flower" Mushrooms, and Braised Chicken Feet with KL-style dark sauce noodles ($10.80). The noodles coated in a flavourful dark sauce had a good bite to it. The pork shoulder char siew was succulent with pronounced layers of fats that stood out against the glossy, blackish caramelized exterior.

EatAlley34

EatAlley31

Soong Kee Beef Noodle - was founded by Siew Wei Hann's father, who started the business right after the second world war in 1945. What's interesting about their beef noodle is that the dish is made with two components - housemade noodles coated with dark soy sauce and decadent with a scoop of umami-rich minced pork and beef mixture and served alongside a bowl of clear beef soup containing beef tripe, juicy beef balls and tender beef slices from Australia. The latter acquires its light depth of flavour from the brewing of only beef balls without the bones, and its cleaner taste makes it the perfect accompaniment to the noodles.

EatAlley24

Uncle Beh Pork Noodle - was started by Beh Chin Kiang's late father in 1963 at a rented stall in Pudu Raya (Pudu market). The Signature Pork Noodle Combo with Kway Teow in Soup ($10.80) features minced and sliced pork and pigs' intestines, liver and kidney. The much-anticipated soup was savoury sweet with a good depth of flavour, and I relished it till the very last drop.

If I were to pick three dishes to eat again, I would go for the Pork Kway Teow Soup, Wanton Mee and the Nasi Lemak. They are my favourites among the 8 stalls.

Osteria Mozza @ Hilton Singapore Orchard - Famous Artisanal Wood-fire Pizzas By Celebrity Chef Nancy Silverton

IMG_0066

Osteria Mozza in Hilton Singapore Orchard is the restaurant's only Asian outpost, with a menu featuring Celebrity Chef Nancy Silverton's signature American-style salads and world-famous artisanal wood-fired pizzas. The restaurant's ambience and lunch menu exudes a more casual and playful side of the restaurant. We were here on a Sunday, and the restaurant was almost full, with tables of diners present for various celebrations.

IMG_0071
Prosciutto Wrapped Grissini Sticks 4/5

First, we were served the Prosciutto Wrapped Grissini Sticks that successfully whetted our appetites. The thinly sliced prosciutto was soft with a buttery texture.

IMG_0065
Roasted Chicken Salad 4/5

The Roasted Chicken Salad ($26) is one of the restaurant’s available American-style salads. It has a creamy yet light mix of napa cabbage, olives, grain mustard and chicken. Other salad options include the Shrimp Caesar and Cobb Salad.

IMG_0068
Margherita 4.2/5

Moving on to the highlight of Osteria Mozza, Chef Nancy Silverton's artisanal wood-fired pizzas. The classic Margherita ($34) is topped with mozzarella, tomato and basil. We thoroughly enjoyed the airy and puffy sourdough crust and the wonderfully thin and crisp base.

IMG_0069
Fennel Sausage 4.5/5

Our vote goes to the Fennel Sausage ($40) between both pizzas we had. On top of the well-executed pizza base, the savoury combination of panna, mozzarella, red onion, and scallion worked perfectly together. All pizzas ordered are fired in the restaurant's custom wood-burning oven over California almond wood, known for its fruit wood flavour, high heat, low smoke and balanced sweetness.

IMG_0072
Tin Roof Sundae 3.8/5

Caramel gelato, marshmallow sauce, salted peanuts and a waffle biscuit base form the Tin Roof Sundae. My dining companion and I found this too sweet to our liking but appreciated the intentional variety of textures. It would work better as a group sharing dessert.
