Wildseed Cafe By The Summerhouse @ Seletar Airport - Take A Flight to The English Countryside

IMG_0075ed

In recent months, the former Seletar Airbase or better known as Seletar Airport has been transformed into a F&B and lifestyle destination. The black and white colonial bungalows, together with the lush greenery, felt as if one is being transported to the English countryside. Occupying the former home of the Royal Air Force's Tech Wing Command, is the site of The Summerhouse.

The Summerhouse is an integrated multi-concept destination comprising The Summerhouse Dining Room and Balcony Bar located on the upper storey; and Wildseed, a cafe, patisserie and bar on the ground level.

Pork & Krauts 4/5

From the sandwich menu, we started with the Pork & Krauts ($15). It is a pulled pork sandwich with cabbage, cucumber salad, nuts, and yoghurt sauce. Initially I thought the sandwich may be too meaty but it turned out the cucumber and cabbage not only lend a crunchy touch, they give it a refreshing balance.

IMG_0085ed
The Morocano 4/5

The other sandwich we tried is the The Morocano ($18). The braised beef brisket is paired with eggplant stew, feta cheese and sauteed pak choi, hummus and sesame. The combination of ingredients is rather refreshing, with the flavours coming together as one yummy sandwich.

Independent Uruguay 4.5/5

Among the three sandwiches we tried, the favourite is the Independent Uruguay ($15). It is a vegetarian sandwich with herbal falafel, carrot pesto, feta cheese, pickled beetroot, Kranji lettuce and yoghurt sauce. The star has to be the falafel which is perfumed by the different herbs and spices.

Super Thin Curly Fries 4/5

Mentioned earlier, Wildseed is not just a cafe, it also comes with a bar. Complementing the cocktails and drinks is the bar snack menu. A crowd favourite is the Super Thin Curly Fries ($11/$17) that comes with ketchup and/or soy sauce seaweed mayonnaise dip. These thin curly fries are very dangerous. Unknowingly, I probably have eaten half of it in a short time span.

Deep Fried Hollandaise Balls 4/5

Instead of cheese balls, the snack bar has these addictive Deep Fried Hollandaise Balls ($12/$18). It did not occur to me that you can actually transformed a sauce into a snack. The hollandaise sauce was given a gelatine coat and deep fried. It is crispy on the exterior and saucy inside.

IMG_0098ed
Pancake 4/5

It is amazing that Chef Florian Rider makes his own butter which is used to pair with the Pancake. The fluffy pancake is drizzled with maple syrup and topped with grilled corn kernels. I like the addition of the corn kernels, giving it an extra crunch for a delightful finish.

Kaya Toast 4.8/5

The highlight at Wildseed Cafe has to be the Kaya Toast. The interpretation of the local breakfast is out of this world. Who would have thought of stuffing a 62.5 degrees sous vide egg into sour dough bread with kaya, butter, coconut and gula melaka. You need to try it yourself to understand how good this is.

Pea Flower Coconut Muffin 3.8/5

IMG_0113ed

If you have a sweet tooth, then you will be delighted to know that the cakes at Wildseed Cafe are created by 1-Group Pastry Chef Jasmin Chew drawing inspiration from the edible cafe. The Pea Flower Coconut Muffin ($6.50) with its gula melaka coconut filling, reminded me of a giant ondeh ondeh but more cakey.

Honey Lemon Rosemary Tart 4.2/5

For me I adore the Honey Lemon Rosemary Tart ($6.50) more. The execution was well balanced with the scent of rosemary crowning the beautiful flavours.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

Herbal Oasis (一盅汤) @ Neil Road

IMG_2448ed

Just within less than a minute walking distance from Department of Caffine, is another totally different type of cafe opened by a Traditional Chinese Medical (TCM) Clinic, Ren Hai Clinic (仁海堂). The cafe, Herbal Oasis (一盅汤) is located on the 2nd level of the 2 storey shophouse with the TCM clinic on the first level. The cafe serves nourishing and healthy set lunches and teas in a cozy and relaxing environment.

Herbal Oasis (一盅汤) offers a valuable and healthy Set Lunch from $15 onwards that incorporated the benefits of traditional chinese medicine in the dishes. The set lunch comes with a choice of rice, soup and main, with a top up for $5 to complete the meal with a dessert and herbal tea.

IMG_2474ed
Yam Rice 4.2/5 Walnut Brown Rice 3.5/5

Although there are 4 choices in the rice selections, only the Yam Rice ($4) and Walnut Brown Rice ($4) is available when I visited the cafe. Between the two, I preferred the more flavourful yam rice with chucks of yam with its low glycemic index that can help to control blood sugar. The walnut brown rice with raisins may not be as fragrant but comes with a delightful crunchy bite. The other 2 options available on the menu are Olive Rice and Pumpkin Rice.

IMG_2476ed
Black Herbal Chicken Soup 4/5 Snow Pear with Fig Soup 4/5

There are 6 types of soups available on the menu which are Black Herbal Chicken Soup ($8), Snow Pear with Fig Soup ($6), Almond Aloe Vera Herbal Soup, Bitter Gourd Cooling Soup, Old Cucumber with Duck Soup and Qi Tonic Chicken Soup. We tried the black herbal chicken soup which is a booster for qi and blood that helps vitality and rejuvenation. The snow pear with fig soup and almond is good for those that has a troubled cough. The light and refreshing soup will help to nourish the lung and clear the phlegm.

Poached Spinach with Wolfberries 4/5

IMG_2470ed
Luffa with Black Fungus Meatballs 4/5

IMG_2472ed
Broccoli with Fish and Mushroom 4/5

Same as the soup menu, there are 6 choices for the main dishes. They have Asparagus with Black Fungus and Lily Bulbs, Broccoli with Fish & Mushrooms ($9), Celery with Walnut & Black Fungus, Fish with Danggui & Mushrooms, Luffa with Black Fungus Meatballs ($9) and Poached Spinach with Wolfberries ($7). If you noticed, every main dish comes with a green for a balanced diet. The seasoning is not very heavy but yet tasty. I am a person that needs my meat so if given a choice among the three dishes I tried, I would go for the Luffa with Black Fungus Meatballs or Broccoli with Fish & Mushrooms over the Poached Spinach with Wolfberries.

Afternoon Tea  Set

Too full for a proper meal? Herbal Oasis also offers a value for money Afternoon Tea Set ($7) that comes with a Herbal Tea and a Dessert. Beside the brew of the day, a range of health benefit teas are available on the menu such as the Nourishing and Claming Tea, Noble Tea for Rejuvenation, Clear Vision Tea and Complexion Enhancing Tea. Add on a dessert such as the Red Dates Muffin, Orange Muffin, Black Sesame Muffin with Lemon and Banana Walnut Cake to complete the afternoon tea.

Red Dates Muffin 4.2/5 and Black Sesame Muffin 3.5/5

Eating healthy does not mean that one has to eat bland and tasteless food. Ren Hai Clinic (仁海堂) with its traditional chinese medicine knowledge has specially created these nourishing and health benefit dishes that is not only delectable but promotes health living through natural means and daily lifestyles. My only disappointment and also my worry for the cafe is their menu. A lot of the items were not available during my visit. The menu is already small, further with limited items this deprived customers from the choices which they supposed to be entitled. Hopefully this is one off as the food is really not bad.

The Muffinry Bakery & Cafe @ Telok Ayer Street

IMG_1415ed

With the upcoming opening of the Downtown Line, foodies will be rejoice that many good food and cafes will be easily accessible by public transport. Thanks to the new downtown line, it will bring us closer to another food haven in Telok Ayer. One of the places near Telok Ayer MRT station is The Muffinry Bakery & Cafe. The little cafe occupies a unit of the shop houses along Telok Ayer Street. The first floor of The Muffinry is a retail space where daily bakes are displayed. Orders are also placed here before proceeding to the second floor for a seat.

IMG_1414ed

Its quite a small cafe but I like the simple decor with a wooden theme giving it a rustic feel but at the same time having a casual and relax ambience with the white and baby blue coat of paint.

IMG_1412ed

It also has a attic floor with more misfit tables and chairs.

Double Chocolate and Apple Blueberry Crumble 4/5

I tried both their Double Chocolate ($2.40) and Apple Blueberry Crumble ($2.40) muffins. I actually like the size of it, I don't really fancy those big muffin such as those you can get at Starbucks as I cannot finish them. Taste waste they were rich, flavourful and moist. A delightful snack especially for a great tea time break chilling out with friends over a cup of coffee or tea.
