Funsiamo @ Suntec City Mall - Singapore’s First and Only DIY Baking Studio
Funsiamo, a premium DIY baking studio from Taiwan has just opened its door in Singapore at Suntec City. Don't mistaken it as any other culinary studios that offer baking classes. 'Siamo' being 'we are' in Italian, Funsiamo actually serves as a studio space for you and your loved ones to have fun together through baking from its library of recipes. At only 1,200 feet, its minimalistic design with occasional splashes of yellow opens up the space visually.
There will be 15 recipes rolled out in phases within the first month, with more coming in the later stage. All ingredients and equipment will be provided hence you simply need to make a call to book or even walk in inpromptu if there is available space for you.
As mentioned, the session is meant for you and your loved ones to have time for each other. Hence the only thing between you and your companion(s) would be the ipad to guide you along.
Between Rainbow Cake and Valhorna Banana Chocolate Cake, we chose the latter. The staff passed to us a tray of the essential items and we were all set to go!
We could even choose our own oven! Tag it with the number label given to you and preheat it according to the recipe.
There is a rack just right underneath the table that is filled with other dry ingredients such as flour, baking powder, tools such as weighing bowls, mixing bowls, knief, spatula etc, while across the room, there is fridge with the wet ingredients such as whipped cream, milk, preweighed egg yolk and egg white to make the process as layman as possible.
Like doing a 'Tasty' video, we pre-weighed the ingredients into their respective bowls first before mixing them all together.
The crew are always around when you need them, especially for the more complex step such as whipping up the egg white.
After a few more steps of mixing, then sending the trays of cake mixture into the oven, the cakes were out piping hot! It can be quite a challenge taking out the trays of cakes but the space is quite well designed, hence we didn't have the issues to knocking into somebody else's items.
Next we need to cut the cake and trim them into shape.
Now comes the exciting part - the layering of the cake! I don't think I will ever get to try whipping my own cake unless i got my own spinning wheel etc.
After freezing the cake for about 5 minutes, decoration begins! That's where your creativity juice flows.
The satisfying moment putting the final touches to the cake.
And I could see that many had fun sprinkling the stardust onto their cakes.
Your masterpiece will be packed up beautifully in a box, for you and your loved ones to savour the moments at home.
There will be more recipes coming up such as Macarons, Fruit Tarts, Mousse Cakes and even Unicorn cakes. To celebrate Funsiamo's official opening, you can enjoy a 20% discount for Valhorna Chocolate Banana Cake, Rainbow Cake and Hokkaido Cupcake.
Fumbling through the recipe together really makes whole lot of a difference from having an instructor to tell you what to do. There was a lot more communication going on between my sister and myself, and greater anticipation of what's going to come out from our oven! I hope you will be like us, immersing ourselves in that few hours, to create our very first layered cake.

Ninja Bowl @ Duxton Road - Turns Two With A Whole New Slew Of Hearty Dishes
Ninja Bowl at Duxton Road celebrates its 2nd anniversary with a refreshed menu. In addition to the whole new slew of hearty dishes, it has for the first time introduce a range of pasta dishes too.
Tamago Sandwich 4.2/5
For our lunch, we started with the Tamago Sandwich ($16). The soft and fluffy tamogo is coated with a layer of melted gouda cheese for that extra oomph and sandwiched in between a croissant. Besides that, it is further accompanied with a side of Japanese curry minced beef and an onsen egg. You can even use the croissant to wipe the plate clean.
Hokkaido 4/5
For the seafood lover, there is Hokkaido ($16) which comes with tempura-battered fish fillet and soft shell crab. The tendon rice bowl is pretty substantial. Instead of the usual tendon sauce, homemade chilli crab sauce is used for a local twist.
Harajuku 4.5/5
It is probably hard to tell from the picture but on the plate is a whole roasted cauliflower. The Harajuku ($18) is a roasted cauliflower steak topped with tempura bits and pine nuts. Accompanying the dish is yaki unagi that has been glazed with kebayaki sauce and creamy mac & cheese. The combination may sounds a weird but surprisingly it works.
Ohayo 4/5
Last but not least we had the Ohayo ($20). The savoury-sweet combination can either be a brunch item or dessert. Two fluffy French toast is paired with maple-glazed pork belly, pomegranate. rocket, momo tomatoes and burrata. I feel the milky and buttery burrata cheese plays an important role in harmonizing the whole dish.
The new menu at Ninja Bowl has definitely delivered new excitement to the table, giving more reasons for guest to return. It once again has impressed me with their new creations.
Note: This is an invited tasting.
