Jai Thai Restaurant @ Clover Way

IMG_2480ed

I was at Jalan Pemimpin, Tat Ann Building looking at some furniture that I remembered there is a Jai Thai restaurant just around the block at Clover Way. It was not a difficult decision since it was just around the corner and I have tried the food at Jai Thai East Coast Road before. The wallet friendly restaurant was not opened yet when I reached the place. Count myself lucky to be early. Once the clock strikes six, customers started streaming in and within minutes the restaurant was full.

Mango Salad 4/5

The Mango Salad ($6/$9/$12) is a good starter to whet up the appetite bursting with all the different flavours on a single plate. The peanuts and cashew nuts added extra crunch to the salad.

Tom Yam Seafood Clear Soup 3.5/5

The last time I dine at Jai Thai Restauant was around 2 years ago. I had the Tom Yam Seafood Clear Soup ($6/$9/$12), the same dish I ordered back then. I remembered that there was more seafood and they did not use fried fish but fresh fish instead. I was a bit disappointed and the price has also increased.

Steamed Tofu with Chicken Basil 4.5/5

I also ordered the same dish, Steamed Tofu with Chicken Basil ($7) back then. It has increased by a dollar and I am glad that the standard has not dropped. The combination of steamed tofu and delectable minced chicken infused with the basil flavour goes very well with a bowlof rice.

Olive Rice 4/5

Most customers usually will order pineapple rice at Thai restaurant but my preference is always the Olive Rice ($5/$7/$10). I find them more fragrant and flavourful compared to pineapple rice.

Red Curry Beef 3.8/5

Instead of the usual green curry chicken, I tried the Red Curry Beef ($6/$9/$12) for a change. Except that it is red in colour, similar to green curry, it is on the sweet side instead of being spicy. The beef is pretty tender although we can't expect the restaurant to be servicing premium cut.

Overall the food at Jai Thai is decent and with it wallet friendly price point. Judging from full house restaurant and long queue waiting for a seat, it remembers me that it is very subjective to judge food as long as the diners enjoyed it. It is quite similar to individual's interpretation of happiness.

Lola's Cafe @ Simon Road

IMG_1468ed

I always tell my foodie friends that I find it hard to review establishments near my place because I will always tell myself I have time to check it out another day. Instead I will make all sort of efforts to travel to the other end of the island for good food. It is contradicting isn't it. Nevertheless, thanks to Charleen and Kimberley who have journey down to my hood, I managed to drag my lazy feet to meet them and finally get to check out Lola's Cafe at Simon Road which is like a bus stop away from where I am staying.

Latte 3.5/5

Lola's Cafe uses coffee beans from Dutch Colony. The blend that they used is pretty smooth drinking but the Latte ($4.50/$5.50) was lacking that sweet bitterness body that I personally preferred.

Organic Chai Tea Latte 4/5

Charleen is not a coffee drinker so she has gone for the Organic Chai Tea Latte ($5). Bonus point for the beautiful latte art.

Honey and Paprika Wings 4.2/5

I have been very skeptical about cafe food because it usually turns out bad rather than good. I can't really blame them because their focus is different. However saying that, there are cafes that are worthy of going back for the food and one such place is Lola's Cafe. We started off with the Honey and Paprika Wings ($9 for 8 pieces). Most cafe will probably just marinated the chicken, deep fried it and served with either ketchup or chilli sauce. I applauded the effort behind the menu and creation to pair it with honey and paprika. The chicken was deep fried to a nice crisp while retaining the juiciness inside. The spices and honey further lifted the flavours for a common finger snack.

Avocado Eggs Benedict 4.2/5

Brunch at Lola's Cafe is served between 10am to 3pm. Basically there are only 5 items in the brunch menu. We had the Avocado Eggs Benedict ($15) that has 2 beautifully poached eggs resting on slices of avocado, ham and a very soft brioche bread. Very delectable combination that was beaming with sunshine.

Mushroom and Cheese Toast 4/5

The Mushroom Melt ($10) is a good change to the usual French Toast or traditional Kaya Toast. The melted mozzarella cheese with mushroom and brioche bread did surprise me how 3 simple components can come together to be an excellent dish.

I am glad that there is such a nice cafe in the heartland near my place. Besides the friendly service, the friendly pricing of not more than $16 on the menu is very reasonable with the portion and delicious offering. I do look forward to try their dinner items in the very near future if I managed to drag my lazy feet out of the house.
