[CLOSED] Madam Kwan @ Vivocity

IMG_3863ed

Many of you may have noticed that Vivocity has some what underwent a revamp of its food and beverage tenants with the introduction of several new restaurants such as Bornga, Jamie's Italian and The Chop House. The famed Malaysian Nasi Lemak chain, Madam Kwan has also moved across the causeway and opened its flagship oversea store in Vivocity Singapore. I was there one evening with fellow blogging friends from RERG, PinkyPiggu and FoodieFC to check out the place.

Curry Fish Head 3.5/5

One of the reasons why we are at Madam Kwan is to try the Curry Fish Head ($49). For the price we are paying, its quite a big pot of curry with lady fingers, brinjal and Tau Pok. We checked with the waiter and understand the pot of curry was cooked the same way it is done in Malaysia except that the chilli paste is different due to some ingredient import requirement. When we tasted the curry broth, all of us has that puzzled look at one another. The curry broth is something that is new to our palate and not the usual curry we have in Singapore. I am lost of words to describe it but it may take a while for the local palate to accept it. However, the noteworthy was the Tau Pok. The huge as a fishball Tau Pok not only was crisp on the outside but it still had that soft spongy interior bite to it.

Madam Kwan's Nasi Lemak 4.2/5

Finally I have a taste of the most expensive Nasi Lemak. Madam Kwan's Nasi Lemak ($13.90) is served with 2 pieces of curry chicken, cucumber, sambal ikan bilis, acar, dried shrimp floss and hard boiled egg. The accompanying sides are noteworthy and tasty in its own right but the star has to be the rice. The rice was fluffy and beautifully fragrant by the aromatic coconut milk which was so good that I can eat it all by itself.

Nasi Bojari 4.5/5

Even though I have not been to Madam Kwan's Malaysia outlet, I have already heard much about the tri-coloured rice created by Madam Kwan herself. I am glad that the group ordered the Nasi Bojari ($18.90) which comes with the tri-coloured rice, assam prawns, shredded beef redang and a huge chicken drumstick. The drumstick was fried to a nice crisp on the skin but still tender and juicy inside. While the assam prawn was lip smacking, the shredded beef redang was missing that wholesome chunky enjoyment.

Chicken Satay 4/5

Beef Satay 2.8/5

Between the Chicken Satay ($11.90) and Beef Satay ($13.90), the clear favourite is the chicken satay. The chicken satay was well marinated and succulent. The flavour was further accentuated by the nutty dipping sauce. On the other hand, the beef satay was dry and tough.

Otak Otak 4/5

While there was mixed opinion among the group about the Otak Otak ($15.90), I enjoyed the thick slab of fish paste which was not mushy. Chunks of fish meat lends a delectable bite to the otak otak which was also not too spicy.

Curry Laksa 2.8/5

It seems like Curry Laksa ($11.90) used the same base of the curry fish head. The curry broth was not as flavourful compared to the curry fish head. It lacked that spicy lemak kick that I have grown up to associate with.

Although the portion served at Madam Kwan is bigger in portion compare to what you can get at hawker, I still cannot get over that fact that it is so pricey for hawker fare. Yes it comes with better quality ingredients and air conditioned dining environment but hawker food are meant to be affordable. I walked away asking myself whether I will return. Probably yes for the Nasi Bojari but definitely not so soon.

[CLOSED] The Chop House @ Vivocity

IMG_4268ed

With the success of Wooloomooloo Steakhouse at Swissotel the Stamford, the same people has created a new gastro-bar dining concept, The Chop House at Vivocity. The Chop House opened on 2 September 2013 has a seating capacity of about 170 guests offering both indoor and waterfront dining options. The menu at The Chop House showcases a range of classic western favourites executed with flair as well as a wide range of specially curated beers and cocktails.

IMG_4267ed

Interior designed with wood finishing, down lights and ceiling fans, The Chop House has an inviting ambience. There is also TV screens around the gastro-bar screening English premier league soccer.

IMG_4269ed

Featuring the state of the art SelfTap Beer concept from USA, The Chop House is the first in Singapore and Asia to introduce these SelfTap stations. There are 5 such SelfTap stations located in and around the gastro-bar. Customers are able to pull pints at their own leisure and only charged by the millilitres, basically paid for what your drink.

IMG_4265ed

Customers just need to purchase a stored value card from the cashier for $5 and top up the card with a value of their choice, similar to Ezlink. Tap the card against the SelfTap reader before pulling the draft of your choice before pulling your glass of beer. The appropriate value will be deducted from the card. By the way, you get to keep the card and it is also transferrable. Currently the SelfTaps offer only Mac's Great White Cloudy Wheat Beer (New Zealand) and Pure Blonde Premium Lager (Australia).

Mussel Soup 4/5

Moving on to the food, we started dinner with Mussel Soup ($10). Not commonly served in restaurant, this is actually a first for me. Using New Zealand green lipped mussels, the thick creamy broth was further enhanced by a touch of sour cream to lifting the richness of the flavourful soup.

IMG_4273ed
Chicken Quesadillas 4/5

For some light bite before the mains were served, we tried the Quesadillas ($15) with a choice of chicken or beef. We went for the chicken quesadillas that was served with sour cream, homemade salsa and guacamole. The tortilla shell was grilled to a nice crisp and filled with with a cheesy mix of minced chicken and melted Jack cheddar.

IMG_4274ed
Sweet Potato Fries 3.5/5

Gone are the days of potato fries. It seems like its a new trend of restaurant servicing Sweet Potato Fries. Deep fried to a nice exterior crisp with the naturally sweetness of the sweet potato, it's a delightful snack to go with a glass of beer.

IMG_4275ed
The Chop House Pork Burger 4.2/5

It is The Chop House after all so inevitable we need to check out the meat section on the menu. The meat at The Chop House is supplied by the same supplier for Wooloomooloo Steakhouse, quality is definitely not compromised. First up is the The Chop House Pork Burger ($22). The freshly handmade minced pork patty was pretty awesome, tender and juicy. The thick and tasty pork patty was flavoured with ginger, chilli and coriander topped with applewood smoked bacon and pickles.

IMG_4279ed
Berkshire Pork Chop 4.8/5

Given an Asian twist is the Berkshire Pork Chop ($32). The thick cut pork chop is redolent with a Mongolian glaze of hoisin and black bean chilli sauce. The interesting sauce mixture complemented the beautifully grilled chop perfectly. Pardon my shallow palate, the beautiful Mongolian glaze sure got my taste buds excited. I will definitely come back for this again.

IMG_4281ed
USDA Prime Rib Eye (200g) 4.2/5

The Chop House also offers a collection of premium cuts such as tenderloin, sirloin and T-bone steaks from Australia and New Zealand. We had the 200g USDA Prime Rib Eye ($36) that is on par to many steakhouses in terms of quality and price. Grilled to perfection, the pinkish medium beef was tender, juicy and flavourful. All grilled dishes at The Chop House are served with twice baked potato, fresh watercress and deep fried onions.

IMG_4282ed
Homemade Condiments

A trio of complimentary Homemade Condiments of Onion Jam, Chilli Mustard and Beetroot Chutney will be offered to customer with any order of the meat specialties. My favourite was the onion jam.

IMG_4284ed
Mixed Grill Seafood Platter 3.8/5

Good for sharing for two is the Mixed Grilled Seafood Patter ($48). The seafood platter comes with a selection of salmon, prawns and calamari stuffed with herbs and breadcrumbs. The calamari and prawns was grilled to a nice crunch. The salmon was also moist and not overcooked. A slight lack down in the seasoning which was not even. Some section of the plate tasted a tad too salty.

IMG_4285ed
Apple Strudel in Tortilla with Vanilla Ice Cream 3.5/5

The wonderful night was wrapped up on a sweet note with the Apple Strudel ($11) in Tortilla with Vanilla Ice Cream. A decent dessert that came with a nice crunchy bite of the apple, finishing off with the delish vanilla ice cream.

The Chop House with the philosophy of servicing quality food in a casual dining experience is perfect for large group gathering or chill out over a perfectly chilled beers.
