Kaiyi's Wonton Noodle @ Golden Mile Food Centre - I Have Found My Best Banh Mi In Singapore

KaiyiWantonMee19

Located at the corner of Golden Mile Food Centre on level 1, facing the main road is Kaiyi's Wonton Noodle stall that sells traditional Vietnamese wonton noodle. What exactly is the difference between our local wanton mee and the Vietnamese version?

KaiyiWantonMee21
Char Siew Wonton Noodle 3/5

To find out the different, we got a bowl of Char Siew Wonton Noodle ($4.50). The bowl of noodle comes with slices of lean char siew, fried wonton and lettuce. The noodle is that those springy type, a bit like our mee kia with a bite. It is tossed in a dark sauce which I found it rather light for local palate. We had the spicy version which I have to applaud the stall owner for making it from scratch. However it is way too spicy, throwing the balance off.

KaiyiWantonMee8
Wonton Soup 3.5/5

Beside the noodle we also ordered a bowl of Wonton Soup ($4). The plump wonton has more vegetable to meat stuffing, giving it a more crunchy meat. However I thought the seasoning was a bit heavy with the the pepper.

KaiyiWantonMee3
Chicken Sticky Rice 3.8/5

Besides the Vietnamese style waoton mee, the stall also sells a variety of noodle and rice dishes. A value for money dish is the Chicken Sticky Rice ($5.50). For the reasonable pricing, the plate of rice comes with a whole chicken leg that is braised to an enjoyable tender texture.

KaiyiWantonMee14
Chicken Curry 3/5

The other chicken dish we tried is the Chicken Curry which comes with 2 huge pieces of chicken. However the Vietnamese curry is not those lemak type and it is actually sweet. It is not the usual curry that we are used to. It may take quite a bit of effort to win over the local palate.

KaiyiWantonMee25
Banh Mi 4.5/5

For me the star at Kaiyi's Wonton Noodle is actually their Banh Mi ($5.50). The Vietnamese style sandwich roll. Unfortunately this is only available on Fridays at the moment. The best Banh Mi I had exactly is from Melbourne, Lee's Bakery. I have not find something close until I tried Kaiyi's version.

KaiyiWantonMee26

The baguette made with a mixture of rice and wheat flour is extremely light and crispy. It is already so good on its own, imagine when we stuffed it with all the flavourful ingredients. Freshly put together, you can find carrot, cucumber, pickle, chicken, chilli, mayonnaise and cilantro sandwiched in between. You get a firework of flavours and different play of textures with each bite in to the banh mi.

Bee Kee Wanton Noodles @ Amoy Food Centre - Truffle Wanton Noodles

IMG_9853ed

When I heard that Bee Kee Wanton Noodles has opened a new stall at Amoy Food Centre, I took the opportunity to go down for breakfast on one of my off days, just to understand what is the rave about their truffle wanton noodle. Apparently Bee Kee Wanton Noodles is opened by Ms Jo Ann Ng, the owner of Vanilla Bar & Cafe, with the flaghship outlet at Lorong Lew Lian.

IMG_9858ed
Original Wanton Noodle Dry 3/5

IMG_9850ed

I started with the Original Wanton Noodle Dry ($3/$4) before moving on to the truffle wanton noodle to have a comparison. The chilli is piquant and the noodle has a good bite to it. Unfortunately I find the bowl of noodle too dry. It needed something saucy to complement the chilli sauce. While the slices of char siew was thick, it was too lean and dry for me.

IMG_9857ed
Truffle Wanton Noodle 3.5/5

The process of cooking the truffle wanton noodle is no different from other wanton noodle stalls except that truffle oil is sprayed into the bowl before serving. I find the Truffle Wanton Noodle ($6/$8) fares much better than the original wanton noodle partly because of the truffle aroma. The truffle oil may have lubricated the texture of the noodles, so it was not as dry as the original version. I think it has potential to be an excellent bowl of wanton noodle but it needs to work on its char siew andd wanton.

Kam's Roast (甘牌燒鵝) @ Pacific Plaza - 1 Michelin Star Roasted Goose Restaurant Opens In Singapore

IMG_0209ed

Three times Michelin starred restaurant for 2015, 2016 and 2017 editions of Michelin Guide Hong Kong & Macua, Kam's Roast (甘牌燒鵝) has opened its first overseas outlet at Pacific Plaza, Singapore. It will be officially opened on 19 November at 1pm. Unfortunately for a start, they will not be selling their famous roasted goose due to AVA regulation. I really hope it will be soon as its like a crown without the jewels.

IMG_0211ed
Marinated Black Fungus and Marinated Cucumber 4/5

Besides the different roasts at Kam's Roast, the menu also offers some appetizers to go with the meat. We had the Marinated Black Fungus with Vinegar ($6.80) and Marinated Cucumber with Vinegar & Garlic ($6.80). The crunchy and sourish snacks were not only appetizing, it also helped to freshen the palate after all the richness from the roasted meat.

IMG_0223ed
Crispy Pork 4.2/5

Sinking my teeth into the crackling skin, I realized the Crispy Pork ($14.80) is somewhat different The skin is thinner, almost can't taste the fats. It is like having a biscuity dehydrated pork skin.

IMG_0228ed
Toro Char Siew 4/5

The most raved about item since their soft opening and private session has been their "Toro" Char Siew ($22.8). The premium pork belly is seasoned with Kam family's award-winning marinade using a secret recipe from Mr Kinsen Kam Kwan Sing, once a 2nd generation at the famed Yung Kee. It resulted in a melted in the mouth texture with a slight char on its exterior with a slight hint of smokiness.

IMG_0236ed
BBQ Pork 4.2/5

The BBQ Pork or Char Siew ($14.80) is much more leaner than the Toro Char Siew. I actually preferred it over the Toro char siew for its more delectable bite, just like I don't enjoy toro in Japanese cuisine. Hence it is my personal preference.

IMG_0232ed
Soya Chicken 4.2/5

After trying Singapore very own 1 Star Michelin Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken, I was craving for it for the longest time but I am always deterred by the long queues. Hence I am glad that I have the chance to try yet another delicious Soya Chicken ($14.80). The chicken was so tender and juicy. It definitely manage to satisfy my craving.

IMG_0231ed
Roasted Duck 4.5/5

It is a pity that Kam's Roast is not able to bring it their signature roasted goose that brought them to fame. Nevertheless, Kam's Roast also does a very good Roast Duck ($16.80 - $55). For the opening promotion, the roasted duck is selling at $28 for half and $48 for whole. Among all the different roast meats I have tried during my visit, the roasted duck was my favourite. The roasted duck was fatty enough to substitute the goose. It was also roasted perfectly to a succulent texture. Not to forget the special concocted sauce to go with the roasted duck, that brought the shine to the dish.

IMG_0249ed

Besides the Roasted Duck, Char Siew, Soya Chicken, Sio Bak, Kam's Roast also offers Suckling Pig and Wonton Noodles on their menu. I understand the restaurant also allows takeaway, if you do not want to join the long queue. Let's hope Kam's Roast will be able to bring in the geese soon to be able be officially showcase their signature dish that brought the stars.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

Quan Soon Wanton Noodle @ Teban Garden Food Centre - One Of The Cheapest Wanton Mee At $2

IMG_2474ed

Further down the row of stalls of JH Fishball Noodle at Teban Garden Food Centre is Quan Soon Wanton Noodle. Quan Soon Wanton Noodle is owned by 62 years old Madam Wong who has been offering cheap and affordable food for the neighbourhood for the past 37 years. You can get a plate of wanton mee for $2 at her stall.

IMG_9603ed
Wanton Mee 3.5/5

The stall sells a variety of noodle dishes such as Wanton Mee, Laksa and Prawn Noodle, all at a low price of $2. Madam Wong has continued to sell her noodles at $2 because there are many old people which do not have a lot of money in the estate and she wanted to provide affordable food which can help to fill their stomach.

IMG_9597ed
Wanton Mee 3.5/5

My plate of wanton mee dry for a mere $2 comes with springy noodles, 2 wantons, slices of char siew  and some vegetables. I enjoyed the texture of the noodle as well as the wanton which is stuffed with minced pork and chestnut, I can even taste hints of dry sole fish in the wanton filling.

IMG_9600ed

For those that is looking for something for substantial, you can also go for the larger portion at $2.50 or $3. The plate of wanton mee may not be the best but it does come with that old school flavours, bringing back my childhood memories.

Master Tang Wanton Mee @ Sixth Avenue - The Return Of The Old Master

IMG_8704ed

I finally dragged my feet and made my way down to Sixth Avenue to check out Master Tang Wanton Mee after all the media hype of his re-opening in Bukit Timah. Master Tang is already in his 80s. Accordingly to online sources, Mr Tang used to be the head chef of crystal jade kitchens and was the brainchild behind their signature wanton mee.

IMG_8702ed
Wanton Noodles 3/5

Since so much is said about the Wanton Noodles ($3.50), I have to order a plate to try myself. This is the Hong Kong style wanton noodles, so do not expect any char siew. It only comes with 4 small size wantons and a few leaves of chye sim. The noodles are thin and springy with a good bite to it. Unfortunately I do not like the alkaline taste on the noodles. Saying that I thought the sauce complemented the noodle excellently.

IMG_8707ed
Beef Brisket Noodles 3.5/5

Since we have already made the trip down to the stall, we also ordered a plate of the Beef Brisket Noodles ($6) to try. I preferred this over the wanton noodles partly due to the fact that the rich and savoury braising sauce helps to mask the alkaline taste of the noodles. Not getting the star on the plate is the beef brisket and tendon that have been stewed until tender soft.

IMG_1641ed

I have not tried Master Tang's previous cooking, so my judgement is purely on my visit. The noodles I had did not quite justify the media attention that has been given to him. I was left puzzled on the hype. Maybe age has caught up with him. Not to forget he is already in his 80s.

CCK190 Wanton Mee @ Circuit Road - After A Year's Break, The Shiok Wanton Mee is Back

IMG_8650ed

Fans of CCK190 Wanton Mee be rejoiced, your favourite wanton mee stall has re-opened at Circuit Road Block 89 Market and Food Centre. The friendly couple, Uncle Danny and Auntie Yvonne has decided to follow their passion after a year break from closing their previous stall at Choa Chu Kang.

IMG_8646ed
Wanton Mee with Chilli 4.2/5

The Wanton Mee with Chilli ($2.50/$3/$3.50) comes with reasonable thick slices of char siew which is roasted at the stall itself. The char siew has a bit of char at the edges, not overly sweet and quite moist in texture. Besides the springy egg noodles, the highlight is the chilli sauce that has a spicy kick to it. The chill is definitely hot and spicy but it does not throw the balance of the dish off but complement it. It is understand that the stall takes up to 4 hours to prepare the homemade chilli sauce.

IMG_8656ed
Dark Sauce Wanton Mee 4.5/5

If you prefer something less spicy or sweeter, the Wanton Mee with Dark Sauce ($2.50/$3/$3.50) will be my recommended choice. The dark sauce provided the additional dimension to the simple plate of noodle, giving it a more elevated enjoyment.

IMG_8657ed
Wanton Soup 3.8/5

IMG_8655ed
Fried Wanton 4/5

The stall offers both the Wanton Soup and Fried Wanton. The wanton skin was a tad thick for the soup version but it works for me when it comes to the fried wanton. The thickness of the wanton skin when fried is even crispier.

IMG_8648ed
Dumpling Soup 4/5

IMG_8659ed
Fried Dumpling 4/5

Besides the wantons, we also tried the Dumpling Soup and Fried Dumpling. Both versions were as good, stuffed with minced pork and prawn to the brim. It is quite generous with its filling for a substantial enjoyment.

IMG_1610ed

A typical day for uncle Danny and auntie Yvonne starts at 3am, making their way to the stall to prepare all the ingredients to serve their customer at 6am. They roast their char siew, wrap their own dumplings and wantons, cook their own chilli paste. A lot of hardwork is behind the delicious plate of wanton mee. I am glad that I got the chance to try their wanton mee. Thanks for making a return.

Full of Luck Club (福乐) @ Holland Village - Bringing Progressive Cantonese Cuisine To The People

IMG_8790ed

The team behind the award winning Li Bai Cantonese Restaurant has opened a new restaurant in Holland Village introducing a progressive and contemporary take on authentic Cantonese cuisine. The new concept, Full of Luck Club (福乐) actually took over the premises of the former Wendy's, just next door of Crystal Jade.

IMG_8789ed
Panko-crusted Portobello 3.8/5

A highlight at Full of Luck Club is the Bao Bar window concept, which offers a delectable selection of both steamed and fried baos for patrons to takeaway. It is also available for dine in. As of today, a total of six choices are available on the menu such as kung pao fried chicken, salted egg yolk prawn, portuguese pork chop.

For the steamed bao, I got to the Panko Crusted Portobello and Braised Pork Belly. The baos are going at $6 per piece and $9.80 for two. The bao concept is quite refreshing. It is like the Chinese's version of hamburger but replacing the bun with bao.

IMG_8791ed
Braised Pork Belly 4/5

The Panko Crusted Portobello comes with fluffy steamed bao sandwiched with golden fried whole portobello mushroom in teriyaki mayo sauce, carrot cabbage slaw and grilled pineapples. The sweetness of the grilled pineapple play an important role in holding the different components together.

The Braised Pork Belly is like an upgraded version of kong bak pau. It comes with slow braised pork belly, lettuce, pickled lotus root, fried shallots, peanuts, coriander and bird's eye chilli. It has more textures and an extra omph from the chilli compare to the traditional kong bak pau.

IMG_8814ed
Hokey-Pokey Ice Cream 3.5/5

For the sweet tooth, there is the Hokey-Pokey Ice Cream which comes with cocoa chips, toasted marshmallow and creamy honeycomb ice cream in a fried bao. Surprisingly I actually quite enjoyed it except that it is a bit messy to handle.

IMG_8786ed
Raspberry Pu Er 4.2/5

From the beverage menu, I ordered the Raspberry Pu Er ($4.50) which is light and refreshing. I like the modern twist to traditional tea drinking. The other modern iced teas on the the menu are the Lychee Oolong and Sour Plum Oolong.

IMG_8792ed
Stir Fried Radish Cake with XO Sauce 3.5/5

The Stir Fried Radish Cake with XO Sauce ($6.80) was chunky and has a nice caramelized crispy crust on the exterior. I thought the radish cake itself was rather bland, saving grace is the external seasoning that coated around it to make it delicious.

IMG_8795ed
Golden Sand Corn with Salted Egg Yolk 3/5

To be frank, I was not too impressed with the Golden Sand Corn with Salted Egg Yolk ($4.80). Can't deny that the corn kernels are sweet with a good crispiness from the light batter coated around it. Unfortunately, I have difficulty tracing the salted egg yolk.

IMG_8799ed
Chilli Glazed Fried Fermented Bean Paste Chicken Wings 4/5

The Chilli Glazed Fried Fermented Bean Paste Chicken Wings ($8) works for me. I like the spicy and tangy kick coated on the exterior of the chicken wings on top of the juicy meat.

IMG_8800ed
Poached Wontons in Chilli Soy 3/5

There was mixed opinions of the Poached Wontons in Chilli Soy ($7.20). I agree with the group that the wontons were good. However I felt it lacked the chilli oil aroma and spiciness which is the soul of this dish.

IMG_8803ed
Braised Spinach Beancurd 3.5/5

The Braised Spinach Beancurd ($16) with its silky texture is yummy. However isn't this a classic dish, where is the progressive take on authentic Cantonese cuisine?

IMG_8804ed
Spicy Stuffed Yong Tau Foo 3/5

The Spicy Stuffed Yong Tau Foo ($16) comes with assorted vegetables and tofu stuffed with minced pork. It is then seasoned with spiced whole fermented bean paste. Once again I find the spicy dishes on the menu lacking the heat that I was expecting to make me break into a sweat.

IMG_8807ed
Sweet Mint and Lime Cod 3.5/5

The buttery flavour of the cod fish is the highlight of the Sweet Mint and Lime Cod ($24). The pan seared cod is scented with mint and lime for a rounder and enhanced flavour. The cuttlefish on the other hand is rather irrelevant and not necessary for the dish.

IMG_8810ed
Crispy Aromatic Duck 4/5

One of the signature dishes at Full of Luck Club is the Crispy Aromatic Duck ($35 half/ $70 whole). It is paired with hoisin sauce, cucumber, shredded spring onions and steamed Chinese pancakes. The duck is done similar like duck confit, so it can be eaten on its own or wrapped with the steamed pancakes with a bit of the hoison sauce, cucumber and spring onions.

IMG_8811ed
Moonlight Truffle Beef Hor Fun 3.5/5

The Moonlight Truffle Beef Hor Fun ($20) will please the new gen with the addition of truffle and poached egg in the classic zi char dish. A couple of us prefer to leave out the truffle so we can get the scent of the wok hei instead of some artificial chemical. I think I will still go for KEK's version if I need a good plate of moonlight hor fun.

IMG_1856ed

Besides the bao dishes on the menu, I am not quite impress with the rest of the items consider the team of Li Bai is behind it. I can't find much progression in the creation. It is more of tweaking authentic Cantonese cuisine to suit the taste and wallet of the new gen. Saying that I find the pricing quite steep for the quality of food it is serving. i think I will just stick to the steamed baos when I visit the restaurant again.
