Typhoon Bloom 3.8/5

This Typhoon Bloom is said to be synonymous with Outback Steak, an appetiser set to leave you in awe. Very thinly coated with batter, I was surprised by how sweet and juicy these fresh onion strings were. Spiked with Outback’s secret seasonings, it was really tough to stop the moment it was served to our table, especially so when the tangy dip added on to the pleasure.

Appetizer Platter 2.8/5

Appetizer Platter ($21.90) allows you to try their new Crispy Volcanic Shrimps, Kookaburra Wings and Lemon Butter Calamari. The Volcanic Shrimps was sweet spicy with sriracha aioli sauce and the Kookaburra Wings was finger licking good crispy exterior and succulent meat, not forgetting the blue cheese dip. The calamari, however, tasted very much like frozen stock.

Ribeye 3/5

For steaks, we chose the Ribeye 10z ($47.90) with Coleslaw and Loaded Baked Potato. Seasoned and seared with their secret 17 seasoning blend, the Ribeye was chargrilled over open flame to draw out the flavours from the meat and fats all together. The Loaded Baked Potato was soft and fluffy, my Coleslaw was sadly too dainty a portion.

Baby Back ribs 2.8/5

If you look for meats that fall-off-the-bones, the Baby Back Ribs ($25.90 half) here would probably disappoint you.

20180801_131742
Toowoomba 3/5

You might be better off with their pastas which we enjoyed it much more than the ribs. We had Toowoomba ($29.90), the tomato cream sauce was easy on the pasta and worked really well with the prawns. The price can be a lot friendlier though. That's when the discount comes in handy!

20180801_142016
Apple Pie 3/5

We had an Apple Pie Ala Moda ($15.90) to sweeten the deal. Although it looked like a "failed attempt" with a flatten crust, when the cold ice cream meets the thick and chunky layers of warm apples in my mouth, the flavours fell into place.

As the level of discount increases with the number of pax dining in, it does make a lot of sense to come in groups and try out more of their new items.

IMG-20180723-WA0004

From 5 July to 5 August 2018, K Food Holdings, operator of Chir Chir Fusion Chicken Factory, Masizzim, Kogane Yama, Nipong Naepong and NY Night Market, recently launched the 'K FOOD WHEEL OF DAEBAK', which is a sure-win “wheel of fortune” promotion through which customers dining at any of the aforementioned restaurants will be entitled to one spin of the wheel for every $50 spent in a single receipt. No matter where the wheel is spun to, customers will surely be rewarded with some form of food or dining vouchers, such as a $50 dining voucher or a free order of Ranch Cheese Fries.

We visited one of its participating oulet, NY Night Market which is a Korean-American fusion food joint located at Westgate. First established in Seoul Korea, this popular chain specialises in international street food whee one can find in New York City, offering Western food items such as fried chicken, pasta and pizza infused with Korean elements.

Waterfall Cheese Shrimp
Waterfall Cheese Shrimp 4.5/5

The Waterfall Cheese Shrimp ($13.90) features perfectly succulent grilled prawns with broccoli, king oyster mushrooms and cherry tomatoes blanketed in a waterfall of lusciously creamy mozzarella and emmental sauce from a mini bucket. Packed full of creamy cheesy goodness, this is definitely a dream come true for cheese-lovers.

Gambas Al Ajillo
Gambas Al Ajillo 4.2/5

A Spain Tapas-inspired dish, the Gambas Al Ajillo ($13.90) comes in a sizzling plate of sauteed prawns in garlic and olive oil, served with crispy toasted garlic breadsticks. Similar to the waterfall cheese shrimp dish. the prawns are fresh and juicy with a slight peppery aftertaste. The rich flavours of garlic and olive oil makes the dish extremely fragrant. We recommend mopping up all those delicious olive oil with the breadsticks.

Blood & Seoul
Blood & Seoul 4/5

With alcohol going at discounted prices during happy hour till 7pm, the Blood & Seoul ($10; UP: $14.90) was quite a catch with lime Mojito, raspberry and strawberry puree, lemon juice and mint cocktail mix in a huge glass, and a beer bottle inserted upside down into the glass. Finish at least half of your drink before lifting the beer bottle to allow more beer to flow into the glass. While the cocktail is mildly sweet with a refreshing fruity taste, bitter hints of alcohol become more prominent as the beer slowly empties into the glass.

Party in New York
Party in New York 4.2/5

The Party in New York ($30.90) features the hearty surf 'n' turf platter filled with sausage, cajun fried chicken, prawn, french fries, pineapple and corn. It also comes with a sizzling hotplate of Beef Steak. Cooked medium rare, these 150g of grilled flat iron steak is tender and juicy, perfectly seasoned with basil and served with rich BBQ sauce and butter.

Five Nines (999.99) @ Cuppage Plaza - It Needs More Polishing To Get Back Its Shine

FiveNines1

Five Nines (999.99) which first opened at Keong Saik Road has now been relocated to Cuppage Plaza level 4. In fact, it has done a musical chair with Kyuu, swapping premises. Putting the restaurant's group reason for doing so aside, lets see whether Five Nines is able to maintain its gold standard with a new Chef at helm and new menu.

FiveNines2
Marinated Botan Shrimp and Couscous Salad 3/5

For my visit, I had the 6 course dinner at $49. The first course is Marinated Botan Shrimp and Couscous Salad with tosazu vinegar and salmon roe. I can't deny the sweetness and freshness of the botan shrimp, as well as the idea of appreciating the different textures of the botan prawn. However the whole execution and presentation did not quite excite me. It felt rather bare, rough and unappealing.

FiveNines6
Foie Gras Terrine and Bruschetta 2.8/5

FiveNines8

The second appetiser is Foie Gras Terrine and Bruschetta with instant smoked orange jam. I really felt the smoking effect was rather gimmicky and it didn't really complement the dish. Rather I felt it was a bit too thick and unpleasant, distorting the appreciation of the main ingredients.

FiveNines10
Lobster Spaghetti with Creamy Tomato Sauce 4/5

FiveNines12
Garlic Flavoured Squid Ink Tagliolini 3.5/5

For the pasta dish, one has a choice between the Lobster Spaghetti with Creamy Tomato Sauce or Garlic Flavoured Squid Ink Tagliolini topped with Snow Crab. I like my pasta to be saucy hence I preferred the lobster spaghetti with creamy tomato sauce. For those that enjoys a firmer bite and less creamy, the squid ink tagliolini will be a good choice.

FiveNines15
Steamed Cod Fish Rolled with Parma Ham 3/5

The next dish is Steamed Cod Fish Rolled with Parma Ham with Porcini Cream Sauce. The cod fish was cooked to a nice moist texture which paired excellent with the porcini cream sauce. While it is a nice dish, I am not sure the technique used in cooking the cod fish is the best choice to bring justify to the fish.

FiveNines21
Mozzarella and Lamb Tenderloin Fritto 4/5

For those that is afraid of the gamy flavour of lamb, you will not find it in the Mozzarella and Lamb Tenderloin Fritto with celeriac puree, Japanese pepper fond de veau sauce. This is probably the best dish for me among the six-course dinner. The flavourful meat is cooked to tender. The stuffed mozzarella provided the additional boost in flavour to elevate the whole enjoyment.

FiveNines22
Creme Brulee 3/5

Lastly, the Creme Brulee wrapped up the six-course dinner. I thought the custard was a little wet but it seems the others in the group did not think so and quite enjoy it. Guess its up to individual's preference.

Overall, I felt that the six-course dinner at $49 is quite value for money. However it terms of the dishes, I felt Five Nines has lost its shine to be the gold standard. It really needs some polishing to get back its shine if it wants to bring back the crowd.

Note: This is an invited tasting.
