I visited Silver Shell Cafe on a Monday which is the Feast of Rasa theme that features an array of international cuisines. I started with some refreshing Crab Salad and followed with some fresh harvests from the sea.

Laksa 4/5

To warm my stomach a bit, I headed to the live noodle station and tried both the Vietnamese Beef Noodle and Laksa. Cooked to order, it is perfect for those looking for something soupy and comforting.

Cheese Garlic Naan 4.5/5

IMG_8604ed
Tandoori Chicken 3.5/5

One of my favourite stations at Silver Shell Cafe is the Indian station. The beautiful smell of spices perfumed the air from the array of curry dishes on the spread. A must try is the Cheese Garlic Naan. Crispy on the exterior yet fluffy inside from the cheese stuffing. I would also recommend having some of the fish curry and dal to go with the naan.

IMG_8585ed

IMG_8586ed
Char Siew 3.5/5

For those that is looking for a good Hong Kong Roast, you can head to the Chinese station when you can satisfy with the selection of roasts such as roasted duck, roasted pork belly, roasted chicken and char siew.

IMG_8603ed
Clam in White Wine 4.2/5

At the station, I would recommend trying the Clam in Chinese Wine. The sweetness of the clam is further elevated from the aromatic Chinese wine sauce.

IMG_8616ed
Souffle 4/5

IMG_8617ed
Cheese Cake 4/5

Wrapping up the dinner we head to the dessert corner and had the Souffle and Cheese Cake. Lucky I have saved some stomach space for desserts. It seems like the kitchen has a very good pastry chef. I enjoyed both the souffle and cheese cake. It is not easy to do a good souffle and I think the chef nailed it. Furthermore, this is probably the first buffet restaurant that serves souffle.

What makes Silver Shell Cafe different from other restaurants is their thoughtfulness. The family friendly restaurant not only has a kid's corner but recently added the Baby Zone which provides complimentary baby food, in addition to value-added amenities such as milk bottle sterilizers, microwave, baby dining utensils, baby wipes and diapers.

88 Hong Kong Roast Meat Specialist @ Foch Road - The Legendary Sio Bak

IMG_6598ed

I first get to know Martin of 88 Hong Kong Roast Meat Specialist when he was roasting his meat at Tampines. I thought I have discovered the best sio bak in Singapore when Uncle Martin introduced the stall to us, formerly known as Cross Way Bay Hong Kong Roasted Meat in Tampines. The joy was short lived as he soon moved to Johor Bahru. It is only late last year that Martin moved back to Singapore again, starting 88 Hong Kong Roast Meat Specialist at Bukit Batok. Due to the slow business in Bukit Batok, he closed the stall and re-opened at the current place in a coffeeshop at Foch Road.

IMG_6595ed
Sio Bak 4.8/5

What made Martin has such a big following is because of his Sio Bak or Roasted Pork Belly. Unlike most stall, his sio bak is not only crispy on the skin but has a biscuit like texture that is unique and enjoyable.

IMG_6611ed

Look at the gorgeous 7 different layers of the sio bak or pork belly. Someone ever told me, this is the golden standard of a good sio bak.

IMG_6606ed
Char Siew 4/5

Besides the sio bak, I also order some Char Siew to try. I remembered I did not like his char siew back then. However this time round, I think Martin has fine-tuned his skill and it actually is quite good. The char siew is not too sweet and roasted to a tender texture with hints of charred smokiness.

IMG_6600ed
Roasted Duck 4.2/5

The other roast that Martin is perfecting is the Roasted Duck. I wonder what has he changed or learnt during his travel because he has gotten better with his roasted duck. Not only is the exterior crispy, the duck itself is still tender and juicy. As he was very busy during my visit, I did not get the air time to find out more from him.

IMG_6621ed

Many of us who knows Martin is glad that he is back in Singapore now. I am also happy to see that his business is picking up too, from the sight of the long queue during my visit. I hope he is here to stay or I will miss his sio bak. By the way, do note that the current stall in Bukit Batok although using the same name is not related to him. The master is now at Foch Road.

The Carvery @ Park Hotel Alexandra

IMG_1286ed

Hotel buffet offering International, local or even Italian spread or theme centric cuisine is quite common. In fact, a bit boring as every hotel is doing the same thing. For a good change, the new Park Hotel at Alexandra is focusing on roast meats at the hotel restaurant, The Carvery on the seventh floor facing the swimming pool.

IMG_1270ed

IMG_1285ed

Stepping into the The Carvery, the sight of a three metre long meat carving station with daily cuts of beef, lamb, pork and chicken greets the diner with a variety of condiments and sauces specifically created for the roasted meat. You can find different types of salt, butter as well as a myriad of sauces. I would say it is an impressive collection.

IMG_1290ed

The first thing I did is I head straight for the Rib Eye and Prime Ribs. I could not resist the gorgeously roasted pinkish red meat. The other highlight at The Carvery is the spread of sides along the buffet line is suppose to complement the star on the plate - the roast. For a good piece of steak, if you visit a steak house, you would probably pay more than $50 for it. However at The Carvery, you can go for unlimited servicing as well as many other types of roasts and food selections.

IMG_1292ed

Among the roasts and sides, I would also recommend trying the Yorkshire pudding which has the right balance of texture. I heard this gone through numerous testing and tasting before it got the stamp of approval from the owner. While the Beef is the star of the restaurant, surprisingly the Rotisserie Chicken brought the house down for me. Simply marinated with just soy sauce, this is so flavourful, tender and juicy. I have found my best rotisserie chicken in Singapore.

IMG_1283ed

IMG_1284ed

Like all hotel buffet, selection of Cold Seafood will also be available but kept to just a couple as the focus is still on the roasts. Do note oyster

IMG_1287ed

If you do not like to go straigh to the roasts, the salad corner may interest you with their fresh ingredients for a healthy start before checking out the rest of the buffet line.

IMG_1279ed

For those that has a huge appetite, there is the Pasta and Pizza live station. Do save some space for the wood fired pizza. The thin crust pizza is really good.

IMG_1275ed

IMG_1294ed

Although the dessert section is not huge, the sweet creations will not disappoint you. However the one best try item is the Trifle. This is probably one of the best I have ever eaten.

IMG_1271ed

I left The Carvery feeling impressed and satisfied. It is a definitely a good chance with the new roast meats concept for buffet. I felt like I stepped into a steakhouse and served quality meat and delectable side dishes. Only different is I get to have unlimited servicing here.

Old Hong Kong Kitchen Home Delivery

Free-Delivery-2-2
I have known of pizza or fast food delivery but restaurant quality Chinese cuisine delivered right to the doorstep is something new. Not known to many, Old Hong Kong Kitchen has recently introduced home delivery with no GST or Service Charge. There is even free delivery if one orders $80 or more in net spending (promotional period). After that a flat rate of $6 for any parts of Singapore.

IMG_0477ed

Browsing through the website, I had a hard time deciding what to order. I was overwhelmed by the number of items available for home delivery. There are more than a hundred food items ranging from appetizers, soup, mains, dessert and even dim sum.

IMG_0462ed
Daily Double Boiled Soup of the Day 4/5

When the Daily Double Boiled Soup of the Day ($6.80) arrived from the delivery, it was still warm. My advice is to heat it up again before consuming to enjoy the full sweetness of the ingredients that has been boiled for hours. Do note that the bowl is rather small portion which is only good for one pax.

IMG_0458ed
Poached Vegetables with Salted Egg & Century Egg in Superior Stock 4.2/5

One of my favourite dishes among the delivery I have ordered is the Poached Vegetables with Salted Egg & Century Egg in Superior Stock ($20). The highlight has to be the superior stock complemented by the salted egg and century egg, giving the whole dish a boost in flavours and enjoyment.

IMG_0465ed
Soon Hock Fish 3.8/5

When I saw they offered steamed fish in their delivery menu, I got me some what excited. I wonder how they going to manage the doneness of the fish as consideration has to be put in on the journey time. I ordered the Soon Hock Fish ($54) in Hong Kong Style. The sauce of the fish is delivered separately, to be poured over the fish before consuming. The fish itself was cooked to a nice moist and tender texture considering the among of time it has left the kitchen to my home. Of course it can't be compared to having a la minute steamed fish served from the kitchen to the table in the restaurant.

IMG_0471ed
BBQ Meat Platter (3 Types) 4/5

Last but not least, I decided to wrap up my first Chinese home delivery meal with a 3 types of BBQ Meat Platter ($48) which is good to served 4-6 pax. I decided to go for the Roasted Duck, Soya Sauce Chicken and Sio Bak. The roasts were all chopped to a nice generous portion. My favourite among the 3 different roasts is the roasted duck.

IMG_0474ed

Overall I find the Old Hong Kong Kitchen Chinese food home delivery offers a alternative choice to your usual pizza or fast food. With more than 100 over food items in their delivery menu, there is so much choices, imagine you can even enjoy dim sum in the comfort of your home.

Ginza Lion Beer Hall @ Suntec City Mall

IMG_9133ed

When I was told that Sapporo Lion Group has opened Ginza Lion Beer Hall in Suntec. I was rather surprise. It shows how long I have not stepped into Suntec City. The place has really changed with new F&B establishments moving into the refurnished tower 4 of the mall.

IMG_9136ed
Sapporo Premium Beer, Boot (600ml)

Ginza Lion Beer Hall started in Ginza, Tokyo since 1899 originally as the sales division of Sapporo Beer. Hence it is not surprise to find sapporo beer on the menu. I thought the Sapporo Premium Beer served in a boot glass ($18) was rather interesting.

IMG_9142ed
Tai Lemon Ponzu 4/5

So what do Japanese like to eat when they have a couple of drinks? The Tai Lemon Ponzu ($12) which is seabream  sashimi with sliced onion, fried garlic with lemon and shoyu sauce is not a surprise consisting Japanese loves their sashimi. The light and refreshing flavours made it a pleasant companion for the drinks.

IMG_9151ed
Asazuke 4.5/5

The Asazuke ($5) which is homemade pickled radish and cucumber is very addictive with it sourness and some how help to neutralize that bitter aftertaste of alcohol on the palate.

IMG_9163ed
Gobo Karaage 3/5

A new chapter in my food experience is the Gobo Karaage ($8). This is actually deep fried burdock, a type of root. It is actually pretty soft in texture.

IMG_9159ed
Chicken Wings 4.5/5

Not to be missed is their Chicken Wings (4/8pc for $10/$18). The deep fried chicken wing with white pepper and soy sauce is well infused with the loving seasonings. Definitely one of the best wings I have eaten for a long while.

IMG_9146ed
Prawn and Mushroom Ajillo 3/5

I like to call the Prawn and Mushroom Ajillo ($12), the Japanese interpretation of bruschetta. Two kinds of button mushrooms and prawn are cooked in garlic olive served in sliced breads. To eat, I placed the cooked mushroom and prawn on top of the bread and have them together.

IMG_9140ed
Roasted Black Angus Beef 4.5/5

The beer hall not only serves bar food but it also offers a delectable selection of mains too. Not to be missed is their Roasted Black Angus Beef (200g/400g for $28/$50). Roasted to an inner pink with just salt and pepper, this is one beautiful and flavourful piece of steak cooked to perfection.

IMG_9149ed
Grilled Chicken with Thyme 4.2/5

If you are not into beef, then the Grilled Chicken with Thyme ($18) is a good alternative. Grilled with thyme and served with rosemary potato, sauteed mushroom, broccoli and corn. Besides the juicy and tender chicken, the roasted rosemary potato caught my attention will its nice caramelized exterior.

IMG_9156ed
Beer Batter Fish and Chips 4/5

From the land we moved to the sea. The Beer Batter Fish and Chips ($10/$18) served with french fries. The batter is thin and crisp but I could not really taste any trace of beer in the batter. For the fish itself, there were some mix reviews on the texture. The dory was really soft and melted in the mouth coated underneath the thin batter. However some prefers a bit of bites to it, suggesting maybe the use of red snapper maybe a better choice. Nevertheless, this is still a good plate of fish and chips to order.

IMG_9162ed
Pancetta Carbonara 4/5

For something simple and quick especially for the working executive around the vicinity, the Pancetta Carbonara ($16) is worthy for a try. The creaminess coating around each strand of the pasta made it slurping good lifted by the saltiness from the Italian bacon.

IMG_9165ed
Cumberland and Arabiki Sausages

The perfect choice to go with a glass of beer would be the Cumberland and Arabiki Sausages ($16). The plate comes with two pieces of in house recipe sausages as well as two pieces of Japanese herbed sausages served with mashed potato and sauerkraut. It can't really go wrong with these freshly made sausages.

IMG_9168ed
Tiramisu 3/5

IMG_9170ed
Creme Brulee 3/5

The menu also offers a couple of desserts but it definitely is not their forte. Both the Tiramisu  ($8) and Creme Brulee ($8) were decent but I probably would just spent the money on another round of beer.

Ginza Lion Beer Hall not only carries Sapporo beers but also alcohol from various countries such as Germany, Australia and Belgium. Together with a delectable selections of snacks and mains, this is a perfect place to chill out with a group of friends.
