Davis Prawn Court @ Kovan Food Centre - The Popular Cai Png Uncle Is Back Frying A Delicious Plate Of Hokkien Prawn Noodles

DavisPrawnCourt2

Davis Prawn Court at Kovan 209 Food Centre is a new stall selling Prawn Noodle and Fried Hokkien Mee. Residents in Kovan will be familiar with the man behind the wok. The same uncle used to run the now-defunct popular Cai Png stall - Teow Heng Cooked Food.

DavisPrawnCourt11
Hokkien Prawn Noodles 4.2/5

We had the Hokkien Prawn Noodles ($5/$8). The style is more of the gooey, semi-wet version packed with robust, savoury prawn stock. It reminds me of Come Daily Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee in Toa Payoh. Quite similar but less west. The plate of slurping goodness came with prawns, pork belly, sotong and pork lard. In addition, the accompanying chilli sauce has that slight tang that complements the noodles. It is indeed a good plate of Hokkien prawn noodles.

DavisPrawnCourt5
Davis Prawn Noodles 4/5

Besides the Hokkien Mee, the stall also offers a variety of prawn noodle options such as Big Prawn Noodle, Abalone Prawn Noodle, Pork Ribs Prawn Noodle, Pig Tails Prawn Noodle and Intestinal Prawn Noodle.

DavisPrawnCourt15

We had the regular Davis Prawn Noodle ($4.80/ $5.80), which comes with half-sliced prawns, pig's skin and lean pork. I opted for a mixture of beehoon and yellow noodles tossed in a fragrant dried chilli sauce that goes well with the noodle. As for the soup, it has a balance of pork and crustacean flavour. It is not the full-blown, rich crustacean flavour type.

DavisPrawnCourtKovan-8

Overall I prefer the Hokkien Mee over the Prawn Noodle. Comparing the two, the Hokkien Mee fares better. However, if you have stomach space, you can try both items. By the way, the hokkien mee is only available from 10am onwards.

Fei Lou Fatt @ Upper Thomson Road - White Restaurant Group Opens New Prawn Noodle & Lok Lok Concept

FeiLouFatt33

Newly opened at Upper Thomson Road, beside Springleaf MRT station exit 1 is Fei Lou Fatt, a Prawn Noodle and Lok Lok concept by the White Restaurant Group.

FeiLouFatt17
Signature Fei Lou Noodle Soup 4.2/5

We started with the Signature Fei Lou Noodle Soup ($20), which comes with 3 half sliced Ang Kar prawns, fork-tender braised pork ribs and abalone in a slurp-worthy bowl of umami-rich prawn broth. The broth's rich flavour comes from the generous use of fresh prawn heads, slow-cooked for up to 10 hours. Unlike other prawn noodles stalls, the pork ribs here are braised, flavouring the tenderness enjoyment.

FeiLouFatt38
Signature Fei Lou Noodle Dry 4/5

There is also a dry version of the Signature Fei Lou Noodle Dry ($20), which is tossed in an addictive homemade hae bee hiam volcano chilli that complements the ingredients and the noodle.

The prawn noodle comes with an assortment of choice ingredients such as the Big Prawn Noodle ($16), Prawn Noodle (Small: $8, Big: $11), Prawn and Braised Pork Ribs Noodle (Small: $8, Big: $11) and Braised Pork Ribs Noodle (Small: $8, Big: $11). There are both soup and dry versions, and the choice of noodles include the usual suspects of Bee Hoon, Thick Bee Hoon, Kway Teow and Yellow Noodle to suit different palates.

FeiLouFatt40

FeiLouFatt44
Big Prawn Zuke 4.2/5

The Big Prawn Zuke ($16) is a unique offering on the menu, inspired by Ochazuke (rice porridge). It is served with fragrant fluffy Japanese rice topped with big succulent Ang Kar prawns and a crispy homemade fried rice cracker for a textural crunch. There is also the Prawn-zuke ($8) version which comes with vannamei prawns.

FeiLouFatt46
Braised Pork Ribs with Rice 4/5

I asked the owner which is his favourite dish on the menu, and he recommended that we try the Braised Pork Ribs with Rice ($6.80). It is not the Taiwanese-style version, but it is a delicious rice bowl with fork tender meat.

FeiLouFatt49
Lok Lok 4/5

FeiLouFatt53

Apart from the mains, customers can pick from a wide variety of over 20 types of Lok Lok ($1.20 to $3) to complement their meal. There are 4 different types of seasoning to choose from - Sze Chuan Mala, Seaweed, BBQ and Furikake. In addition, have them with the dipping sauces (Mayonnaise, Thai Sweet Chilli and Thai Seafood Green Chilli) for the ultimate lok lok experience.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

Da Dong Prawn Noodles @ Joo Chiat Road - A Stingy Bowl Of Prawn Noodle

DaDong5

I have heard many raving reviews of Da Dong Prawn Noodles at Joo Chiat Road. Some even labelled it the best in Singapore, with long queues at the stall daily and usually sold out by late noon. Da Dong has been around since 1966, and now the 2nd generation is running the stall. So together with my foodie friends, we dropped by on a Monday morning to try the prawn noodle.

DaDong3
Prawn Noodle Soup 4/5

The prawn noodle comes in 3 sizes for $6, $8 and $15. We have the regular size for $8. the Prawn Noodle Soup comes with two small prawns sliced into half and julienne pork slices. My first reaction was that it is a very stingy bowl of noodles for $8. Even the prized soup is only half-filled. I can understand why many raved about the soup. Unlike the other more crustacean based soup, their soup is more pork-based, incline to a tonkotsu broth.

DaDong8
Prawn Noodle Dry 4.2/5

We also ordered the Prawn Noodle Dry, another pathetic serving of 2 small prawns sliced into half and two small pieces of pork ribs. Taste-wise it is better because of the sambal and pork lard. I would recommend going for the dry version.

DaDong9

Is it a good bowl of prawn noodles? Yes, it is. Is it worth it? No, it does not. Why so? While their soup is different and tasty, it is too stingy and not value for money. Unless you stay around the neighbourhood, it is not worth travelling all the way for it.

Ebi Bar @ Cuppage Plaza - New Mod-Sin Noodle Bar

EbiBar23

Ebi Bar at Cuppage serves up its modern take on Singaporean prawn noodles with its specially concocted prawn broth and handmade noodles. The menu includes some of our favourite side dishes, but with an added touch of fanciness to make it their own.

EbiBar5

EbiBar6
Signature “Chao Da” (Charred) Ebi Noodles 3.8/5

Ebi Bar's unique take on our local prawn noodles is this Signature “Chao Da” (Charred) Ebi Noodles ($14.90), served with a pair of charred prawns and slices of chicken roulade. As the main selling point of Ebi Bar, the broth didn't disappoint with its deep rich prawn flavour, and I love how savoury it tasted. The chicken roulade slices laced with charred skin were beautifully tender, and the noodles were springy with a nice bite. It was a pity that the prawns, however, were slightly overcooked and not appropriately deveined either.

EbiBar17
Signature “Chao Da” (Charred) Ebi Pao Fan 3.8/5

There's a new item on the menu - Signature “Chao Da” (Charred) Ebi Pao Fan ($18.90), which I thought works even better with the flavourful prawn broth. The rice was plump with a bite, with added rice crisp for texture and crunch. The rice soaked up the broth well, and every mouthful of the rice and the broth was truly enjoyable.

EbiBar22
Truffle Broth Booster, Mala Broth Booster, Miso Broth Booster

You can also amp up your dish with “Broth Boosters” - Mala ($1.90), Miso ($1.90) and Truffle ($2.50). The Mala Broth Booster adds a layer of peppery aroma to the broth. At the same time, the Miso Broth Booster enhanced the savouriness of the broth, akin to the ramen miso broth. I don't suggest going for the Truffle Broth Booster at all, which was too overpowering.

EbiBar27
Crispy Fried Chicken in Salted Mackerel Marinate 4/5

There are a couple of interesting sides to complete your meal. Crispy Fried Chicken in Salted Mackerel Marinate ($6.90) is its take on Har Cheong Gai. Each morsel made from chicken thigh was pretty juicy, and the best bit was the crisped chicken skin.

EbiBar15
Chilled Tofu with Homemade Sauce 3.5/5

EbiBar14
Ah Ma’s Achar Gone Fancy 3.5/5

I enjoyed the simple dishes on the menu, such as the Ah Ma's Achar Gone Fancy ($5.90) and Chilled Toufu with Homemade Sauce ($4.90). The achar with jellyfish is exceptionally crunchy, while the chilled tofu with cold sweet and savoury sauce is very appetising. Unfortunately, the portion was a tad too little.

EbiBar12
Ebi & Vege Crispy Fritter 2.5/5

As for the Ebi & Vege-Crispy Fritter ($5.90), I reckon the batter requires a bit of work to be less greasy and stay crisp for a longer period.

Loyang Way Big Prawn Noodle @ Loyang Way Food Village - Slurping Goodness Worthy Of My Trip To The East

LoyangWayBigPrawnNoodle7

Loyang Way Big Prawn Noodle at Loyang industrial has been one of the prawn mee stalls I have wanted to visit for a long time. I have heard many raving reviews of their prawn mee. However, the place is not accessible by public transport. The nearest MRT station is at Pasir Ris, and there is only a bus to the industrial area, which takes about half an hour to reach.

LoyangWayBigPrawnNoodle9
Pork Rib Prawn Noodle Soup

We tried both the Pork Rib Prawn Noodle Soup and Dry ($5/$7/$9). The first thing I notice is how orange is the soup. It is packed with the rich and robust crustacean's flavour. It also comes with crunchy prawns sliced in half and tender pork ribs.

LoyangWayBigPrawnNoodle4
Pork Rib Prawn Noodle Dry

The Pork Rib Prawn Noodle Dry ($5/$7/$9) is as impressive too. Tossed in fragrant sambal, it is damn shiok. The sambal together with the fried shallots complemented the noodles excellently, elevating the enjoyment to another level. Similar to the soup version, it comes with crunchy prawns and tender pork ribs.

LoyangWayBigPrawnNoodle1

After trying the prawn noodle here, I have to agree with the raving reviews. Although the old uncle that used to operate the stall has sold the business, I still find the stall dishes out a delicious bowl of prawn noodle worthy of me travelling all the way for it.

Hoe Nam River South Prawn Noodles @ People's Park Centre - The Same Old Familiar Flavour

HoeNamRiverSouth4

Since moving to the West, I have not been back to River South (Hoe Nam) Noodles House in Macpherson for the slurping good Prawn Noodle. I got to know that they have opened a new outlet at People's Park Centre, but I noticed the name is slightly different, named as Hoe Nam River South Prawn Noodles. I heard the original owner has sold the business however it left to be verified. Let us just dig into the bowl of noodle to see whether it still has the same flavour per I remembered.

HoeNamRiverSouth17_6525
Big Prawns Pork Robs Abalone Clams Noodles Soup 4.2/5

HoeNamRiverSouth18

For the soup version, we had the Big Prawns Pork Ribs Abalone Clams Noodles Soup ($9). A sip of the soup brought back flashes of memories how I remembered their prawn noodle. Packed with robust crustacean flavours, this is one flavoursome bowl of prawn noodle soup, further boost by the fried shallots.

HoeNamRiverSouth8
Abalone Clams Big Prawns Noodle 4.2/5

HoeNamRiverSouth10

For the dry version, we tried the Abalone Clams Big Prawns Noodle ($7). Give the noodles a good toss to get them coated with the shiok chilli sauce. Together with the pork lad and fried shallot, this slurping bowl of goodness is gone within a few minutes.

HoeNamRiverSouth2

For those that are not familiar with Hoe Nam River South Prawn Noodles, unlike the other prawn noodle stalls, they offer a huge variety of prawn noodles. I had a count, and there are 25 different combinations you can order! I actually had a hard time deciding what to order.

One Prawn Noodle @ Golden Mile Food Centre - A Prawn Noodle Stall By 2 Young Hawkers

OnePrawnNoodle13

Located at Golden Mile Food Centre is a rather new hawker stall - One Prawn Noodle. The stall is opened back in April 2019 by two young hawkers selling Prawn Noodle. Apparently, one of the partners, Gwyneth Ang, has experience working in the kitchen of Forlino and Burnt Ends.

OnePrawnNoodle3
3 Combination Prawn Noodle 4.2/5

I decided to order the 3 Combination Prawn Noodle Dry ($8) which comes with Pork Ribs, Pig Skin and Intestines. For $8, the amount of ingredients pretty justify for the money spent. In the bowl of noodle, there are egg, prawn, vegetable, shallots and pork lard too. The pork ribs are cooked to fork-tender, and there is nothing to pick about the others too.

OnePrawnNoodle6

For the soup, it is flavoursome and sweet. It is not very prawny type, it is inclined to a pork bone soup base. So I think it will be quite subjective to individual preference. The highlight for me is the chilli sauce that is very shiok. It is spicy and fragrant. It enlivens the whole experience.

OnePrawnNoodle11

Overall I find One Prawn Noodle serves a good bowl of prawn noodle. The chilli sauce is quite powerful with the noodle. If you opt for the soup version, it may be subjective. Not that it is not good, I do enjoy it, but it may not meet your expectation of a robust, rich prawny flavoured soup.

Joo Chiat Prawn Mee @ Ayer Rajah Food Centre - Popular Prawn Mee Stall Makes A Comeback In The West

JooChiatPrawnMee3

Thanks to Ruifang of 545 Whampoa Prawn Noodles posting on facebook, I got to know that the popular Joo Chiat Prawn Mee has reopened near my home at Ayer Rajah Food Centre. Mdm Lee Xiu Chun together with her son-in-law runs the new stall now.

JooChiatPrawnMee5

Apparently, Mdm Lee's father who is from Xiamen, made a living selling prawn noodles when he came to Singapore. He even taught Ruifang's late grandfather who started 545 Whampoa Prawn Noodles. Not only that, they are also relatives of the popular prawn mee stalls at Beach Road, Jalan Sultan and Blanco Court. With the family ties, that could probably mean Mdm Lee's father is like the grandmaster of all these popular prawn mee stalls in Singapore.

JooChiatPrawnMee8
Pork Rib Prawn Mee Soup 4.5/5

We ordered both the dry and soup version to try, with a mix of yellow noodles and bee hoon.
The Pork Rib Prawn Mee Soup ($5) comes with 3 mid-size prawns that have been de-shelled. I took a sip of the soup and was wow by the depth of the rich crustacean flavour. I would recommend adding the chilli powder to change the profile for even better enjoyment.

JooChiatPrawnMee9
Pork Rib Prawn Mee Dry 4.2/5

While I enjoyed the soup version, my friend felt that the Pork Rib Prawn Mee Dry ($5) fares better with the chilli sauce. Indeed the chilli sauce complements the noodles excellently, giving it a nice spicy kick. While it is good, I still think the spirit in a good bowl of prawn mee has to be the soup, hence my vote still goes to the soup version.

JooChiatPrawnMee7

Is there rooms for improvement? The stall has opened less than a month and I suspect there may be still some minor issue to sort out. I think the prawn used can be of better quality but that is subject to the cost. The pork ribs can also be more tender. Nevertheless, that unami prawn stock will get you going back again and again.

JooChiatPrawnMee1

I am glad that Mdm Lee has decided to come out of retirement and even set up a stall near my place.
With its rich heritage as well as the delicious bowl of prawn mee, I am proud to announce that we in the West also has good Prawn Mee!

The Lobby Lounge @ Shangri-La Hotel Singapore - A Curation of 7 Legendary Hawker Dishes + new weekend Popups

Tuck into your favourite hawker dishes at Lobby Lounge at Shangri-La Hotel Singapore. Since the revamp last year, the lounge now offers you a menu dedicated to 7 well-loved Hawker Dishes, along with local delights and comfort food. The 7 featured hawker dishes are Bak Chor Mee with Fish Maw SoupHainanese Chicken RicePrawn Noodle SoupKatong Laksa,  Chilli Crab and Mantou, Bak Kut Teh (Legendary Bak Kut Teh) and Beef Rendang (Rumah Makan Minang).

Kueh Pie Tee and Popiah

While waiting for your mains, start your day with a cup of Kopi or Teh Tarek, along with Kueh Pie Tee and Popiah which are done a la minute to prep your appetite. Not to forget the range of local dishes such as Achar, Sayur Lodeh, Rojak, pork belly etc.

20180324_121243_HDR
Bak Kut Teh by Lengendary Bak Kut Teh

Known for its peppery Bak Kut Teh, this family-run brand uses fresh Indonesian pork and Sarawak peppercorn to create that tummy warm dish. What I like about this set is the super airy and crispy you tiao, as well as the the special brewed tea is served at the side to complete the experience. The broth, however, is a much mellower version compared to those served in their own restaurants.

20180324_124308_HDR
Beef Rendang by Rumah Makan Minang

I do quite like the Beef Rendang by Rumah Makan Minang, although I'm not sure how close it is to the original. As beef rending can be quite rich and greasy, the use of the grainy brown rice really helps to balance the heavy protein. What's notable is the grilled brinjal with the diced chilli atop, which is smokey, tangy with sweet-fiery kick.

20180324_122335_HDR
Chilli Crab and Mantou

I highly recommend Chilli Crab and Mantou for the sweet and tender Alaskan King crab meat and fuss free experience. Neatly shelled, savour each claw as though it is a drumstick. The body becomes a bowl for all its meat, you can simply clean up the 'plate' of meat with a spoon or the airy mantou. The sambal crowning the dish is not just a condiment but also a signature of this gravy, made popular since the day Dragon Phoenix Restaurant’s Chef Hooi, decided to added sambal and eggs as means to enrich the gravy. Though the gravy leans towards the sweeter side, it is excellent as a crab dish.

20180324_115408_HDR
Hainanese Chicken Rice

As for the Hainanese Chicken Rice, the chicken can be more tender. But what I like is the rice, which is fluffy and fragrant.

20180324_120104_HDR
Bak Chor Mee with Fish Maw Soup

The selected Bak Chor Mee is by Seng Kee Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle, served with a premium Fish Maw Soup kept warm in a heated claypot that is brewed from pork bones and dried sole. It comes with an array of ingredients - minced pork, pork slices, egg, seaweed, and stewed mushroom slices, and compliments the noodles really well. It could have been even better if the latter has a more vinegary taste.

20180324_115427_HDR
Prawn Noodle Soup

By Beach Road Prawn Mee, the Prawn Noodle Soup is quite clean on the palate but I prefer a much richer broth which I could see the layer of reddish oil floating on top of the soup.

20180324_123226_HDR
Katong Laksa

Inspired by the Original Katong Laksa aka Janggut Laksa in Katong, the Katong Laksa features short, thick rice noodles served in a broth made from coconut, flavoured with dried shrimp and fragranced with laksa leaf. Though the coconut broth is not as rich and robust as what we are used to but the thickness of the broth is quite all right.

20180324_122528_HDR

You may want to time your visit according to the Heritage Weekend Pop-up Series. Held once a month, the live station will be taken over by a local hawker, showcasing another classic. The first edition, which is just over on the weekend of 24th March, Guna of Springleaf Prata Place was here to demonstrate the art of prate making!

HarriAnns Nyonya Kueh

Plates after plates of colourful bitesize Nyonya Kuehs by HarriAnns are just irresistible. I know some of you will just head straight for them right at the start rather than saving them for desserts.

All six signature dishes are available on the a la carte menu daily from 1130am to 10pm or as part of the local semi-buffet lunch priced at $38++ during weekdays or $42++ during weekends.
