Old Bibik Peranakan Kitchen @ MDIS Building (Changi Road)

IMG_6367ed

With the closing of Lavender Food Square, Old Bibik has to look for a new location to continue selling their popular nasi padang. The two young gentlemen Adrian and Ah Wee who has quitted their corporate jobs inherited Adrian's grandma's rendang recipe and live a bigger dream moving from a small hawker stall to a full fledged eatery with the recently opening of Old Bibik Peranakan Kitchen at MDIS Building along Changi Road. With the new location, they have expanded their menu and also employed a peranakan chef to introduce my delicious and authentic nonya dishes to the table.

Chicken Rendang Set 4.2/5

After months of Lavender Food Square closure, I finally get to try Old Bibik's signature rendang again. The Beef Rendang Set ($8.90) and Chicken Rendang Set ($7.90) comes with achar, vegetable and an egg omelette at the side. Infused with the rich flavour of the spices, the beef and chicken rendang were cooked to fork tender. Paired it with the belachan for a good spicy kick that will blown you off with its spiciness.

Assam Prawn 4.2/5 and Nonya Chap Chye 3.5/5

The extended menu also offers other dishes such as the Assam Prawns ($12), Nonya Chap ($5) and Assam Egg ($3). The fresh and crunchy prawn cooked in assam was a good addition to the menu. The Nonya Chap on the other hand was cooked to a nice crunchy bite but I do not like the sourness version served here. I preferred the sweeter type where the vegetables are stewed to a soft melting texture.

Assam Egg 3/5

The owners shared with us that surprisingly this is the most popular item on the menu. I understand the painstaking effort to make the assam for the egg but I just could not figure out how this could be such a hit. Probably you need to try it yourself to know why.

Kunyit Fried Chicken 4.5/5

For me the new dish to watch out at Old Bibik is the Kunyit Fried Chicken ($4). Beautifully marinated, the frying further lifted the aroma of the turmeric exciting all the taste buds with the delicious succulent chicken.

Medan Town @ Tanjong Katong

IMG_9377ed

Named after the fourth largest city in Indonesia, Medan Town is located at the growing dining enclave of Tanjong Katong.  The casual dining restaurant offers home style Medanese food which reflects the diverse cooking styles of the different races living in Medan.

Bihun Bebek Dry  4/5

The marquee dish at Medan Town is the Bihun Bebek Dry/Soup ($5.80). I tried the beehoon dry served with duck herbal soup on the side. The bowl of beehoon was topped with generous amount of shredded duck, fried garlic, spring onion and bean sprouts. I understand the rice noodle is made in Medan. It comes with a unique springy texture that is different from others.

Nasi Redang Sapi 4.2/5

The other dish at Medan Town that caught my attention is the Nasi Redang Sapi ($6.50). The redang was extremely tender but it was the flavour that woke my palate. At that instant, memories of Indonesia trips flashed across my mind, an authentic taste that has long been forgotten.

IMG_9390ed
Klepon 3/5

The Klepon ($2.50 for 5pc) is boiled rice cake stuffed with palm sugar and rolled in grated coconut. Singaporean will probably known it better as oneh oneh. The rice cake has a nice chewy texture but I am a bit disappointed with the fillings. I prefer the palm sugar filling to be of flowing fluid form.

Es Campur Medan 3/5 and Es Chendol Medan 3/5

Wrapping up the dinner, we ordered the Campur Medan ($3) and Chendol Medan ($3). Both are shaved ice dessert with coconut milk and palm sugar. The different is the ingredients used. I preferred the Campur Medan over the Chendol Medan. Although the chendol was homemade, the colour was unappetising and lacking in texture.

I previously visited a Medanese cuisine restaurant and was not impressed with the food. Medan Town has changed my opinion with Medanese cuisine and I am glad to discover the casual dining restaurant. Now I am another restaurant to go to when I am crave for Indonesian food.

Old Bibik's Nasi Rendang @ Lavendar Food Square

IMG_6130

If you visit Lavendar Food Square, do not be surprised when you see 2 Chinese men selling nasi redang at Old Bibik's Nasi Rendang stall. Both Adrian and Ah Wee quitted their corporate jobs and venture into F&B without any kitchen experience.

IMG_6124

Duplicating Adrian's grandma secret rendang recipe that is handed down from one generation to another, Old Bibik's rendang is prepared from scratch daily at the stall with the freshest ingredients.

Chicken Rendang Set 4.2/5

The Chicken Rendang Set ($4) came with papadums, egg, cucumber slices and rice. Optional side dish such as Nonya style Stir Fried Long Beans can be added at a nominal price. The chicken was well marinated and fork tender.

IMG_6136
Beef Rendang Set 4.2/5

The Beef Rendang Set ($5) is a dollar more and came with the same set items. The beef redang was slowed cooked to tender soft. Worth mentioning are the spices used at the stall. They were freshly and manually blended daily.
