Linkus (临家) Singapore @ Suntec City - A Taste of Minnan Heritage in the Heart of Singapore

Linkus18

If you have ever found yourself craving the refined, ingredient-driven comfort of Minnan (Hokkien) cuisine without the flight to Fujian, a new culinary landmark has quietly taken root at Suntec City. Linkus (临家), a celebrated institution founded in Xiamen in 2004 with over two decades of heritage, has officially opened its first international outpost in Singapore.

Stepping away from the bustling mall corridors into the restaurant’s dark-wood, lantern-lit dining hall feels less like entering a typical mall eatery and more like being welcomed into a neighbour’s home—true to their name, “Linjia” (临家). Moving beyond the familiar local Hokkien favourites, Linkus invites diners to rediscover the roots of Minnan cuisine, which champions natural flavours over heavy seasoning. With accolades such as the “Golden Wutong” award under its belt, expectations are naturally high. Here’s how it fares.

Linkus8
Xiamen Tusundong Jelly 厦门土笋冻 4.2/5

Xiamen Tusundong Jelly 厦门土笋冻 ($3.50) may be a bold introduction for the uninitiated, but it is also one of the most culturally authentic offerings on the menu. A traditional chilled snack from Xiamen, Tusundong is crafted using marine sipunculid worms, commonly known as sand worms, harvested from coastal mudflats. The preparation is meticulous. The worms are thoroughly cleaned before being boiled, releasing natural collagen into the broth. Once cooled, the liquid sets into a clear, firm jelly with the worms suspended inside. The result is a visually intriguing dish with a cool, bouncy “QQ” texture. Each bite delivers a gentle crunch from the worms, reminiscent of bamboo clams, paired with a savoury, tangy dipping sauce that lifts the overall profile. Surprisingly refreshing and texturally fascinating, it is an adventurous start that pays off.

Original Flavour Native Pork Soup 临家土猪肉汤 4/5

The Original Flavour Native Pork Soup 临家土猪肉汤 ($12.90) is a seemingly simple dish, yet one that embodies the soul of Minnan cooking. This clear, unadorned soup highlights Linkus’ “farm-to-table” philosophy, using high-quality native pork (土猪肉) prized for its depth of flavour. Slow-boiled with patience, the broth emerges crystal clear yet deeply flavourful, carrying a natural sweetness that lingers on the palate. There are no heavy seasonings or embellishments; it’s just pure, honest cooking. The pork pieces are tender yet retain a pleasant bite, free from any gamey notes. It is comforting, restorative, and quietly impressive in its restraint.

Buddha Jumps Over the Wall in Original Broth with Shark Fin 佛跐墙原汤烧鱼翅 4.5/5

Buddha Jumps Over the Wall in Original Broth with Shark Fin 佛跐墙原汤烧鱼翅 ($58). Instead of the traditional, lavish medley associated with Buddha Jumps Over the Wall, Linkus presents a refined interpretation focused on the broth itself. Using the essence of the original dish as a base, the soup delivers a rich, collagen-laden depth without the full extravagance. The shark fin adds a delicate, slightly crisp texture, beautifully absorbing the luxurious broth. This approach allows diners to experience the iconic dish’s signature richness at a more accessible price point, while retaining its essence of indulgence and sophistication.

Linkus23
Braised Pork Wonton with Taiwan Daylily 台湾黄花菜煮肉燕 4.5/5

The Braised Pork Wonton with Taiwan Daylily 台湾黄花菜煮肉燕 ($22.90) showcases one of Fujian cuisine’s most prized delicacies — Rouyan (肉燕). Unlike conventional wontons, the wrapper here is crafted from a hand-pounded mixture of lean pork and sweet potato starch, resulting in a translucent, paper-thin skin with a distinctive “snappy” bite. The texture is silky yet resilient, offering a refined mouthfeel that sets it apart. Filled with seasoned pork and served in a light, savoury broth, the dish is further elevated by the addition of Taiwan daylily. The vegetable introduces a subtle floral sweetness and gentle crunch, balancing the richness of the meat. Each bite is layered, delicate, and deeply satisfying.

Linkus29
Quanzhou Mee Sua with Fritters 泉州舌尖面线糊 5/5

The Quanzhou Mee Sua with Fritters 泉州舌尖面线糊 ($19.90 Small) is arguably the heart and soul of the menu. This dish is a masterclass in comfort food. Unlike typical noodle soups, the mee sua here is simmered until it dissolves into a thick, velvety, almost porridge-like consistency. The result is a rich, starchy broth that is smooth, warming, and incredibly soothing. The addition of You Tiao (fried dough fritters) is essential—crisp on the outside yet airy inside, they soak up the broth while retaining structure. The interplay between the silky noodles and the crunchy fritters creates a deeply satisfying textural contrast. Simple in appearance but profound in execution, this is a must-order.

Linkus50
Hand-Picked Crab Meat with Amaranth 手剥蟹肉浸苋菜 4/5

The Hand-Picked Crab Meat with Amaranth 手剥蟹肉浸苋菜 ($25.90) exemplifies how humble ingredients can be elevated through thoughtful execution. The vibrant amaranth greens, known for their earthy sweetness and striking magenta hue, are gently simmered in a light broth. Topped with generous portions of hand-picked crab meat, the dish achieves a delicate balance between land and sea. The sweetness of the crab enhances the greens’ vegetal notes, while the broth remains light and clean, allowing both elements to shine. Nutritious, elegant, and comforting all at once.

Linkus38
Puff Pastry Curry Snow Beef Steak 酥皮咖喱雪花牛排 4.2/5

The Puff Pastry Curry Snow Beef Steak 酥皮咖喱雪花牛排 ($32.90) is a creative fusion that bridges Minnan sensibilities with Southeast Asian influence. This dish presents a marbled “snow beef” steak encased in a golden puff pastry. The pastry is light, flaky, and buttery, shattering delicately with each bite. Inside, the beef is tender and succulent, slow-cooked to a melt-in-the-mouth texture. Paired with an aromatic curry sauce, the dish delivers layers of flavour, from the richness of the beef to the warm spice of the curry, while maintaining a balanced profile. It is indulgent without being overwhelming.

Linkus (临家) brings something refreshingly different to Singapore’s dining scene, not just another Chinese restaurant, but a thoughtful revival of Minnan culinary heritage. Its strength lies in its restraint, allowing premium ingredients and time-honoured techniques to take centre stage. From the adventurous Tusundong Jelly to the deeply comforting Mee Sua, the menu offers both discovery and nostalgia. While some dishes may challenge the uninitiated, they ultimately reward with authenticity and depth. For those willing to explore beyond familiar flavours, Linkus offers a meaningful and memorable dining experience.

IMG_3258

Song Yue Taiwan Cuisine (松悦台式料理), located in Kallang Leisure Park, has been a popular choice for comforting Taiwanese fare prepared with fresh and quality ingredients. The restaurant has recently unveiled an exciting seasonal ‘Taste of Hakka’ menu, featuring reimagined renditions of traditional Hakka classics. Available from now until 31 December 2025, the menu pays homage to the rich culinary heritage of the Hakka community with a modern touch.

Wok-Fried Abacus Beads 4.8/5

I was most excited for the Wok-Fried Abacus Beads ($20.90), a rare Hakka delicacy that’s hard to come by these days. It didn’t disappoint at all - each abacus bead was soft yet pleasantly chewy, perfectly coated in a fragrant stir-fry of shredded yam and beancurd. Every bite was loaded with umami and kissed with an addictive hint of wok hei.

IMG_3295
Hakka Stir-Fry with Pork Belly and Chives 4.2/5

The Hakka Stir-Fry with Pork Belly and Chives ($21.90) may look simple, but it impressed with its balanced mix of textures and flavours. The fragrance of the chives was pronounced in the combination of pork belly, beancurd and peanuts.

Lobster in Superior Broth with Hakka Sweet Rice Wine 4/5

The Lobster in Superior Broth with Hakka Sweet Rice Wine (Market Price) was served bubbling hot in a claypot, peppered with wood ear mushrooms, white shimeiji mushrooms and slices of angelica root. The lobster chunks were a little tough, but otherwise, the nourishing broth was satisfying.

IMG_3366
Traditional Hakka Salt Baked Chicken 4.2/5

The Traditional Hakka Salt Baked Chicken ($36.90) features a whole spring chicken encased in salt and slow-baked. The result was tender, juicy meat infused with a subtle herbal fragrance. We also appreciated how it wasn’t overly salty.

IMG_3311
Traditional Mee Sua in Superior White Pepper Broth 4.2/5

My dining companions were fans of the Traditional Mee Sua in Superior White Pepper Broth with Sliced Pork Fillet, Meatballs and Pig’s Stomach ($23.90). Full of warmth, the lightly peppered broth paired nicely with tender pork fillets, meatballs, and cleanly prepared slices of pig’s stomach.

Grandpa’s 3-Hour Slow Braised Pork Belly with Cabbage and Dried Bamboo Shoots 4.5/5

We ended with Grandpa’s 3-Hour Slow Braised Pork Belly ($36.90), a dish that would satisfy fans of fatty pork belly. The pork belly was melt-in-the-mouth tender, balanced by the crunch of cabbage and bamboo shoots. I’d highly recommend pairing this and its rich sauce with a bowl of white rice.

IMG_3261

In conjunction with this limited launch, diners can also receive a limited-edition Song Yue jute bag with a minimum order of at least one Hakka dish and a spend of $138 for members or $168 for non-members.

Xi Men Jie (西門街) @ The Rail Mall - New Casual Eatery Serving Popular Taiwanese Dishes

IMG_8154

Taiwanese casual eatery Xi Men Jie (西門街) opened in 2015 and has steadily expanded to eight outlets across Singapore. The latest addition is located at The Rail Mall, conveniently situated at the end closest to The Rail Corridor.

IMG_8183

IMG_8146

Stepping in, the interior is bright, clean, and spacious. The menu focuses on popular Taiwanese staples, including Mee Sua, Braised Pork Rice, and Street Snacks, alongside a variety of noodles, fried rice, soups, and porridge options.

IMG_8149
Ocean Blue Sparkle

We started with the Ocean Blue Sparkle ($6.90), a white peach-based drink with jelly cubes. This was too sweet for our taste. The beverage choices here are vast, ranging from bubble tea to homemade drinks and more classic hot beverages.

IMG_8172

IMG_8177
Xiao Tang Bao Soup Dumplings 3.8/5

The Xiao Tang Bao Soup Dumplings ($7.90) was served in a portion of six. Each dumpling carried a decent amount of savoury soup and tender meat.

IMG_8165

IMG_8171
Taiwan Smoked Sausage Egg Fried Rice 3/5

Next, we had the Taiwan Smoked Sausage Egg Fried Rice ($9.50). While we appreciated the use of pearl rice, the dish could be much better seasoned. Other fried rice options include pork cutlet, crispy chicken cutlet, and more.

IMG_8160

IMG_8161
Braised Pig Intestine Mee Sua 3.8/5

Last but not least, we had the Braised Pig Intestine Mee Sua ($8.90), a hearty and well-seasoned rendition. The mee sua is also available with other toppings, such as oysters and shredded chicken.

Abundance @ Redhill - Popular Taiwanese Restaurant Rolled Out New Dishes

AbundanceRedHill-2

Nestled in the heart of Redhill, Abundance stands tall as a popular Taiwanese restaurant, beckoning food enthusiasts to savour the rich tapestry of Taiwanese flavours. Intrigued by the restaurant's reputation, I ventured to Abundance to explore its offerings, specifically diving into its latest creations.

AbundanceRedHill-4
Gua Bao 3.8/5

I commenced with the timeless classic, the Gua Bao ($7.90). A tender slab of pork belly embraced by soft, fluffy buns adorned with salted vegetables and crusted peanuts. While the amalgamation of textures was commendable, I found the flavour profile slightly leaning towards sweetness, longing for a more pronounced savoury note.

AbundanceRedHill-13
Herbal Braised Pork Rice 4/5

Transitioning to the new dishes, I delved into the Herbal Braised Pork Rice ($12.90) — an ingenious fusion of Lu Rou Fan and traditional Herbal Pork Ribs Soup. Succulent pork belly, simmered in a harmonious blend of herbs, graced the dish. The accompaniments, including pickled cucumber, Taiwanese garlic sausage, and a fried sesame egg, elevated the experience. The bed of Japanese pearl rice served as a canvas for this delicious bowl of rice.

AbundanceRedHill-19
Stir-Fried Emperor Sprouts 3.5/5

Another new dish is the Stir-Fried Emperor Sprouts ($11.90). Bathed in flavourful chicken stock and crowned with crispy garlic, the dish promised a crunchy texture and aromatic finish. While the crunch was delightful, a slightly heavier hand with seasoning would enhance the overall taste.

AbundanceRedHill-6
Golden Chicken Mee Sua 4.2/5

The aromatic Golden Chicken Mee Sua ($13.90) is the other new creation, featuring mee sua directly imported from Taiwan. These delicate wheat noodles boast a silky texture that is both smooth and tender. Complementing this delightful base is a succulent pan-fried chicken thigh, expertly cooked to juicy perfection. The dish is further enriched with a fragrant blend of sesame oil and premium Shaoxing Hua Diao Jiu, creating a flavourful symphony that invites you to savour each mouthful. Immerse yourself in the delightful essence of yellow wine that permeates this exquisite creation, making it a truly aromatic and satisfying dish.

Monki (台灣小吃部) @ The Star Vista - Homely And Comforting Taiwan Cuisine

Monki-26

Monki (台灣小吃部) is a Taiwanese restaurant that has moved into Star Vista, located just beside the taxi stand. I remembered visiting the cafe previously at Holland Drive, but I was only there for desserts. I will try out some of their snacks and mains this time.

Monki-09
Taiwan Century Egg Tofu 3.8/5

We started with the chilled Taiwan Century Egg Tofu ($8), generously topped with pork floss and bonito flakes. While it is an appetising starter, I felt the century egg lacked that pungent I was looking for.

Monki-21
Double Mix Mee Sua 4.2/5

There are a few combinations for the Mee Sua, and I went for the Double Mix Mee Sua ($11), picking the big intestine and oyster. The big intestine was not gamey. I recommend adding more vinegar and a dash of chilli to elevate the taste profile to enjoy the thick, smooth, and slurping goodness.

Monki-15
Taiwan Braised Pork Rice 4.2/5

The Taiwan Braised Pork Rice ($9) comes with fragrant and fluffy rice topped with fatty braised pork. I like that it is very saucy, allowing the rice to soak up the delicious sauce for a delightful mouthfeel. It even comes with a braised egg and tau pok.

Monki-31
Taiwan Fried Chicken Cutlet 4/5

We also ordered the Taiwan Fried Chicken Cutlet ($8) to complete our meal. It is incredibly huge, tender and juicy with a crispy coat.

The dishes here felt homely and comforting. Maybe I have been missing Taiwan since the closure of the border due COVIID.

Eat 3 Bowls Station (呷三碗車站) @ Pasir Panjang - Homecoming With Its 2nd Outlet In The West

Eat3Bowls-17

I visited Eat 3 Bowls Station (呷三碗車站) when it first started as a hawker stall at Seah Im Food Centre back in 2017. However, the hawker stall is no longer around as the young hawkers have opened a dine-in restaurant at Crawford Lane. Sometime early this year, it opened its 2nd dine-in outlet at Pasir Panjang, nearer my home.

Eat3Bowls-05
Braised Pork Rice 4.5/5

A must-have is the Braised Pork Rice ($5). I enjoyed their version of braised pork with a mix of fatty and lean cuts. What makes it even more delectable is the soft and pearly rice underneath, absorbing the delicious braising sauce.

Eat3Bowls-03
Chicken Rice 4.2/5

The Chicken Rice ($5) may look plain, but the shredded chicken is well flavoured. The caramelised shallots lent a lovely fragrance to the tender chicken. Though the rice used is not those flavoured Hainanese chicken rice, the plain, soft and pearly rice complements the shredded chicken excellently.

Eat3Bowls-16
Bittergourd Pork Rib Soup 4.2/5

I remembered having the Bittergourd Pork Rib Soup ($5.50) when I visited their hawker stall. Back then, it was so bad that I give it a score of one out of five. This time, it is much flavourful and refreshing. It has redeemed itself.

Eat3Bowls-09
Braised Chinese Cabbage 4.2/5

I also remembered having the Braised Chinese Cabbage ($5.20) back then. It is stewed to a delightful softness. Compare to the previous version I had, this version is richer in taste with the pungent aroma of dried shrimp.

Eat3Bowls-21
Oyster and Intestine Mee Sua 4.5/5

Another signature at Eat 3 Bowls Station is the Oyster and Intestine Mee Sua ($7.20). It is probably the most authentic Taiwan rendition I have eaten so far. It uses red mee sua, plump oyster and bouncy pig intestines for the bowl of slurping goodness. The addition of garlic and vinegar completed the full appreciation of the mee sua.

Eat3BowlsShopfront-3

Though Eat 3 Bowls has an East outlet, I haven't visited it as it is pretty far from my home. I am glad it has returned to the area where it first started, nearer to my home. Now I can easily satisfy my craving for Taiwanese cuisine.
