Coexist Coffee Co. @ Pasir Panjang Road - New Third Outlet In The Rather Off-The-Beaten-Path Part of Singapore

IMG_8709

Coexist Coffee Co. has opened its third outlet along Pasir Panjang Road, bringing its signature speciality coffees and hearty brunch offerings to this rather off-the-beaten-path part of Singapore. When I first walked into its minimalist space, what immediately caught my attention was its sheer spaciousness. It was indeed a much-needed retreat from the surrounding traffic and industrial density.

The food menu is well-curated, featuring a hearty selection spanning Brunch, Mains, Pastas, and Desserts. We tried two brunch items, both of which checked all the boxes of what makes a satisfying brunch.

Smoked Salmon Toast 4.8/5

The Smoked Salmon Toast ($20, +$4 for scrambled eggs) came generously topped with ribbons of smoked salmon, drizzled with dill yoghurt, on sourdough toast. With such a hearty serving of salmon, the toast's thickness provided a good balance, though a touch more dill yoghurt would have helped round out the flavours and mouthfeel. The scrambled eggs were delightfully rich and buttery.

Grilled Cheese Sandwich 4/5

The Grilled Cheese Sandwich ($20) with Tomato Soup reminded me of a version I once had in Bali, and I was pleasantly surprised to find it here as well. Between two slices of sourdough was a gooey mix of Colby Jack, Pepper Jack, and Mozzarella, offering a nice complexity of flavours. The accompanying tomato soup was delectable, though it could use a bit more savouriness and punch. The herbed potatoes were fluffy inside with a crisp skin, and I appreciated that both dishes came with a well portioned mesclun salad.

Carrot Cake Fries 3.8/5

For something to share, one of the popular finger foods here is the Carrot Cake Fries ($12). I considered them the level-up old-school carrot cake sticks. Each stick was battered and fried, then topped with sambal mayo and dehydrated chye poh.

Burnt Butter Toast 5/5

Burnt Butter Toast ($10), found under the Dessert section, was a delightful standout, but it is, in fact, wholesome and delicious enough to join the rest as a main brunch item. The toasted brioche had a beautifully caramelised crust, while the inside stayed soft and fluffy. The blueberry compote tasted homemade — plump and juicy, just lightly sweetened to complement the natural tartness — and the cream tied everything together perfectly. A simple dish, done exceptionally well.

Piccolo, Coconut Cold Brew

The coffee menu is extensive, offering both familiar classics and creative house specials. I had a double shot Piccolo and a Coconut Cold Brew ($7), the latter featuring a 12-hour cold brew mixed with coconut water. The piccolo, even with an extra shot, remained smooth and easy to drink. The cold brew, meanwhile, was refreshingly light, a great alternative to sweetened black coffee.

Coexist Coffee Co. has not only brought its speciality coffees and wholesome food to the Pasir Panjang quartier, but also created a welcoming space where one can truly linger.

Rocket Cafe @ Sathorn Soi 12 [Bangkok]

IMG_3313ed

If you think that the cafe culture in Singapore is big, wait till you visit Bangkok. The cafe scene in Bangkok is even more vibrant. Rocket Cafe started in July 2013, has three outlets in the capital city of Thailand now. They are at Sathorn Soi 12, Sukhumvit Soi 49 and Central Embassay Shopping Mall. My recent trip to Bangkok, brought me to Rocket Cafe at Sathorn Soi 12.

Rocket Fuel 4/5

Rocket Fuel 4/5

The first thing that caught our eyes in the menu is the Rocket Fuel (105 baht small / 315 baht big). It is actually a fancy name for the Cold Brew Coffee of 100% Arabica blend. The simple touch of having a slice of orange helps to reduce the acidity of the coffee for a refreshing caffeine fix.

IMG_3324ed
Hot Cocoa 4.2/5

Another interesting beverage on the menu is the Hot Cocoa (180 baht). It comes in a deconstructed form with an Ecuadorian cocoa stick, a large cup of steamed milk, a dollop whipped cream. Pop the cocoa stick into the hot steamed milk and stir until it dissolved to get you cup of hot cocoa. You can add the whipped cream if you like.

Cafe Mocha 4.2/5

The Cafe Mocha (125 baht) came with a beautiful latte art. The coffee has a good body to it which is also not too acidic. A aromatic cup of coffee to re-energize my day.

Ichigo 4/5

Besides the beverages, we also order their dessert, Ichigo (240 baht) which is only available after 11am. The beautifully plated dessert consists of strawberry and raspberry in sorbet, mousses, gels, meringue, tuile as well as fresh and dried with sous-vide rhubarb, vanilla bean pudding, lemon curd, and start anise crumbles. A refreshing dessert with many different layers of textures at play.

The cafe is spacious, cosy and well lite especially from the natural lighting coming in through the 2 story high glass panel. We already had our lunch before popping by Rocket Cafe, hence we did not try their bakes and mains. If I have the opportunity, I would love to go back to Rocket Cafe again to try the other offerings on the menu.

Old Hen Cafe @ Rangoon Road

IMG_4877ed

Interesting name there for a cafe to be called Old Hen. Not sure exactly what is the reason behind it but definitely is a catchy one. Upon hearing about this place, I made my way down with my foodies friend to check out what this place is all about.

IMG_4870ed

Finally a cafe without the brick walls. I like the simple and clean layout of the cafe using the warm sunlight to light up the place. Glass bottles and pot of green plants can be spotted at various corner of the cafe giving it a nice simple touch which further brightens up the atmosphere.

IMG_4878ed
White 4/5

Coffee here is kept simple to just black or white with 3oz or 5oz. I went for the White ($4/$4.50) which was pretty decent, mid body, not to acidic and easy to drink. Coffee beans are sourced from Oriole.

IMG_4872ed

Different from most hipster cafe, Old Hen Cafe offers Cold Brew Coffee ($6/$6.50) on their menu. If you have tasted those iced can coffee, it taste similar. It is light and milky which made it quite refreshing and easy to drink. I good chance from the usual to beat the heat.

IMG_4880ed
Buttermilk Waffles 2.5/5

he Buttermilk Waffle ($9) is served with blueberry compote and fresh strawberries drizzled with pure maple syrup and valrhona chocolate sauce. It is then topped with honey infused greek yogurt. The cafe ran out of strawberries so they given us more blueberries instead. Unfortunately I did not like my the waffle, it was quite bland. We actually struggled to finish it.

Old Hen Cafe is a quiet and small little humble place. It will be good for one who wants to have a decent cup of coffee and self time away from those crowded hipster cafe. Food wise, it is simple with much rooms for improvement.
