Chef Kang Noodle House @ Jackson Square (Toa Payoh) - Michelin Bib Gourmand Wanton Mee

ChefKangNoodleHouse8

I had heard of the snaking queue with waiting time up to 2 hours at Chef Kang Noodle House when it first opened in December 2018 at Jackson Square. You can't blame the popularity of the hawker stall when it is opened by one Michelin starred Chef Ang Song Kang of Chef Kang's Kitchen. The fairy tale continues with the recent release of Michelin Bib Gourmand 2019. Chef Kang Noodle House is one of the 58 awardees of Michelin Bib Gourmand 2019. What an achievement of the wanton mee stall, winning such a prestige award in less than a year of their opening.

ChefKangNoodleHouse5

There are only 3 items on the menu. Noodle with Char Siew and Wanton ($5), Noodle with Shredded Abalone, Char Siew and Wanton ($10), Char Siew ($10). I ordered both the noodle dishes to try.

ChefKangNoodleHouse13

For five dollars, you get a plate of noodle with fatty char siew, pork lard, greens and wantons. What impresses me at Chef Kang Noodle House is down to each component on the plate of wanton mee. The char siew is fatty with a nice char on the exterior. Just look at the layer of fats and lean meat. The noodle is springy with a delightful bite, complemented by the delicious dark sauce. The wanton was plump and generous filling such as prawn, minced pork, black fungus and water chestnut. In fact, I find it more towards a dumpling than a wanton.

ChefKangNoodleHouse1
Shredded Abalone, Char Siew and Wanton 4.8/5

For another extra five dollars, you get shredded abalone with the char siew wanton mee. Initially, I thought the shredded abalone is chicken. It does look like it isn't it? The chicken itself can be quite dry to go with the noodle; hence, the soft and bouncy texture of the abalone is a good replacement enhancing the full enjoyment and balance of the dish.

Do note that Chef Kang Noodle House is located inside Jack Square, surrounded by building blocks. Hence it can't be sighted from the main road. One needs to make its way into the industrial cluster, and it is located in the canteen around in between block A and B.

Don Signature Crab @ Toa Payoh North - From Pie Club to Crab Party

DonSignatureCrab13

For those working near China Square Central, you should be familiar with Don Signature Crab which was serving their unique crab beehoon soup from 2000 to 2013 before relocating to its current location at Toa Payoh North in March 2015. I will share will you more about Don, the founder at the end of the article but let us dig in to the food first.

DonSignatureCrab4
Crab Beehoon Soup 4/5

There were four of us in total, so we decided to order a couple of crab dishes on the menu to try. We started with the Crab Beehoon Soup ($25 small). Served in a claypot to retain the heat, the soup base has a herbal taste from the dang gui. The crab is considered mid size, cooked together with some vegetables, ginger and yam. However we felt that the version still lose out the one from Mellben.

DonSignatureCrab7
Black Pepper Crab Beehoon 3.8/5

For those that enjoys a peppery kick, the Black Pepper Crab Beehoon ($25 small) would be the choice. Plated in a pile of greens and generous serving of beehoon, it is good for 2 pax to share. I do enjoy the piquant kick but on the critic side, I could not really taste the flavour of the crustacean in the beehoon.

DonSignatureCrab10
La La Prawn White Beehoon 4.2/5

Among the 3 crab dishes we ordered, my favourite is the La La Prawn White Beehoon ($15). While it may look similar to the black pepper dish, the sauce is actually different. The sauce is sweeter, creamier and more garlicky. I felt that it complemented the seafood excellently.

IMG_8307

The man behind it is non other than Don himself, the founder of Don Pie. When I asked him about his pie business, he declined to comment further but I can sense some form of regret and sadness in his tone. What I understand is he as already sold his pie business and now focusing on his crab stall. Anyway if you do plan to check out the stall, the menu offers other items such as Chilli Crab, Cheese Crab, Crab Laksa

Seletar Sheng Mian & Mee Hoon Kway @ Toa Payoh Lorong 8 - Snaking Queue For Their Noodles

SeletarShengMian9

I was running errands in the area and decided to walk over to Toa Payoh Lorong 8 Food Centre to find breakfast. A snaking queue at Seletar Sheng Mian. Mee Hoon Kway caught my attention and I decided to join the queue to check out for myself what the fuss is about. I follow MissTamChiak blog so I know this is one of her favourite stalls which she eats with her grandpa almost every week. However, I did not know that they actually have another stall beside the one at Kebun Baru Food Centre.

SeletarShengMian7

I did some research online and released that Seletar Sheng Mian & Mee Hoon Kway started at Seletar Food Centre. When the food centre was demolished, the elder brother moved to Toa Payoh Lorong 8 while the other brother settled down at Kebun Baru Food Centre.

SeletarShengMian11
Sheng Mian Soup 4.2/5

A bowl of noodle at the stall starts from $3. I had the Sheng Mian Soup ($4) which comes with egg, ikan bilis, fried shallots, vegetables, 2 prawns, minced pork and lean pork. The portion is quite generous with the variety of ingredients. The noodle looks a bit like our maggie mee but its less crispy and much softer. While the noodle is enjoyable and comes with a nice bite, the star is the soup made using pork bones and ikan bilis. It is the sweet soup that carries and hold the whole dish together.

SeletarShengMian3
Mee Hoon Kway Soup 4.2/5

My wife ordered the Mee Hoon Kway Soup ($4) which uses the same soup base and comes with the same variety of ingredients. The mee hoon kway is more doughy and chewy. In short, its up to individual which type of noodles you prefer to go with that excellent bowl of soup.

SeletarShengMian5

The stall also offers the dry version for both the sheng mian and mee hoon kway. I did not try during my visit but I noticed some of the customers having it and the chilli does look quite shiok. I look forward in coming back to try the dry version next time.

Song Kee Kway Teow Noodle Soup @ Toa Payoh Lorong 5 - Bouncy Fishball & Delicious Fish Dumpling

IMG_0624ed

For some mysterious reason, it took me until now to visit Song Kee Kway Teow Noodle Soup at block 75 Toa Payoh Lorong 5. The stall is known for its fishball and fish dumpling. It is known to be related to the popular Song Kee in Serangoon Road before it pulled down its shutter and reopens in Tembeling Road.

IMG_0630ed
Kway Teow Noodle Soup 3.8/5

The Kway Teow Noodle Soup comes with 5 fish balls made from yellow tail fish. The fresh fishball has a subtle fish flavour with a delectable springy texture. The bowl of noodle is further perfumed by the aromatic pork lard. Unfortunately the rice noodle's texture was on the thick side.

IMG_0628ed
Mee Pok Dry 4/5

Not to be missed is the Mee Pok Dry tossed in a mix of chilli and tomato sauce. The noodle was cooked to a nice bite complemented by the sauce and topped with fried shallots and spring onions. It also comes with 6 delectable fish balls. I thought the chilli can be more spicy. Guess I have to ask the stall to add extra chilli sauce in my next visit.

IMG_0631ed

Unfortunately during my visit, I was not able to savour their signature fish dumpling. If I am not wrong, they only served it in the evening due to a lack of manpower in making them.

Master Chicken @ Kim Keat Palm Food Centre - Taste of the Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice

IMG_1624ed

Master Chicken at Kim Keat Palm Food Centre is opened by Jason who used to work at Dong Feng Fa Hainanese Chicken Rice. When he first opened in Toa Payoh more than a year back, there was some attention in the social media space. It took me more than a year to finally make a trip down to check out the stall selling Hainanese boneless chicken rice

IMG_8672ed

The stall sells both the poached chicken and roasted chicken. The first thing that I noticed was the size of the chicken. It was not chopped to the chunky portion as per the picture at the stall. Furthermore, I was disappointed that the skin was missing from most of my chicken pieces.

IMG_8675ed
Chicken Rice 3.5/5

I had the set which is $3.50 and it supposed to come with more chicken meat. I would assume it will be half the portion if I get the standard portion. The chicken was quite tender and decent but it is not among the best I have eaten. I also added some chicken innards for an additional 50 cents.

IMG_8677ed

The rice was pretty fragrant, fluffy and grainy. I also like the fact that it is not very oily. For the chilli and garlic, I found it too watery for my liking.

IMG_1626ed

Over all I find Master Chicken's chicken rice quite ordinary. For my lunch experience, sorry to say it but I did not discover anything that make the chicken rice memorable or stand out for me.

Chao Zhou Fishball Noodle @ Kim Keat Palm Food Centre - Old School Fishball Noodle

IMG_8683ed

I used to go Kim Keat Palm Food Centre for my mutton soup fix until Ivy's Hainanese Herbal Mutton Soup pull down its shutter. Recently I went back to the food centre again and decided to give Chao Zhou Fishball Noodle a try since its one of the few stalls at the food centre that always have a long queue. Moreover, it opens only 4 times a week.

IMG_8679ed
Fishball Noodle

I ordered the Fishball Noodle Dry ($3) which comes with 5 huge golf size fishball. The bowl of mee pok noodle is also drenched in a mixture of ketchup and chilli sauce.

IMG_8680ed

The noodle is cooked to a nice al dente bite. It shows the skill of the hawker behind the noodle ladle. The ketchup sauce gave the bowl of noodle a nostalgic flavour but I thought there was too much of it, throwing the balance off. The bowl of noodle was too sweet for me.

IMG_8681ed

The highlight actually is not the noodle but the fishball. For a mere three dollars, customers get to enjoy these huge and bouncy, handmade fishballs. It is definitely value for money.

IMG_1630ed

It was understand that the stall used to be run by an old couple but when I was there, a young man is helping out in the stall, cooking the noodle while the old uncle is in charge of the fishballs. Looks like the old couple has found someone that is willing to learn the trade and continue the legacy since 1968.

Kim Keat Hokkien Mee (金吉炒福建面 ) @ Toa Payoh Lorong 4

IMG_4744

Kim Keat Hokkien Mee (金吉炒福建面 ) at Toa Payoh Lorong 4 has received some hype in social media recently for its sio bak fried hokkien mee served in a claypot. I have tried their hokkien mee before and I enjoyed it but that is almost a year ago. However, I don't remember them servicing it claypot back then. I had mine served in opah leaf.

IMG_2498ed
Claypot Hokkien Mee 3/5

The Claypot Hokkien Mee ($10/$15/$20/$25/$30) comes in 5 pricing. The cheapest at $10 is able to serve 2-3 pax. It comes with a few pieces of sio bak, prawns and squid.

IMG_2494ed
Claypot Hokkien Mee 3/5

So what is the verdict? I don't like it at all. I was able to catch a glimpse of how it is prepared. The noodles were given a quick stir fried in the wok probably to heat it up and then transferred to the claypot which is being cooked again over fire before being served. The broth of the hokkien mee is actually quite good with the noodles absorbing it. Maybe due to the cooking methods and being served in a claypot, while the heat continues to cook the noodles, the result is a dry and gooey pot of hokkien mee which I did not enjoy at all.

IMG_2502ed

Personally I am quite disappointed in the drop in standard. It also makes me wonder if the claypot is just a gimmick to charge at a higher price. If I am to go back again, I would just order the normal or opah leaf hokkien mee. I think the claypot is a bad idea.

Hougang Meng Kee Wanton Noodle @ Toa Payoh Lorong 8

IMG_9449ed

Toa Payoh Lorong 8 Food Centre at block 210 is a local food haven with many choices and sometime it can be a dilemma what to eat. Besides Lai Fa Carrot Cake which I tried in my previous visit, another worthy stall to check out is Hougang Meng Kee Wanton Noodle.

IMG_9443ed
Wanton Mee 3.5/5

The local version of Wanton Mee ($2.50) is different from the Hong Kong style. The local version is usually tossed in a sweet sauce, served with slices of char siew, a few wantons and some greens. Some stalls may add fried wanton for a more generous offering.

IMG_9445ed
Wanton Mee 3.5/5

4 factors determine whether a plate of wanton mee is good or not for me. First is the noodles. It must be springy with a bite. Second the sauce must be able to complement the noodles. Third the char siew has to be good and lastly the wanton stuffing needs to be flavourful and has a silky smooth skin.

IMG_9446ed

Hougang Meng Kee Wanton Noodle scores well for most of the criteria. The noodles were springy and it goes well with the sauce. The char siew has a bit on the dry side but still a decent portion was served. The wanton stuffing was passable but not to shout for with a nice silky smooth skin.

IMG_9448ed

Hougang Meng Kee Wanton Mee may not be the best of what I have eaten. It is definitely above average and managed to satisfy my craving during my visit.

Lee Ta Fried Carrot Cake @ Toa Payoh Lorong 8

IMG_9438ed

Time flies and it has been almost four and a half years since I last visited Toa Payoh Lorong 8 Food Centre. I could not believe it takes me so long to re-visit this hawker food haven. The last time I was here, it was in the evening and I managed to check out Hock Kee Lorong 8 Bak Kut Teh and B for Beancurd. As my visit this time is in the morning, I decided to try Lee Ta Fried Carrot Cake.

IMG_9439ed
Carrot Cake 4/5

There are quite a few carrot cake stalls in the food centre. It seems this is the more popular one among the patrons so I joined in the queue. The stall sells both the white and black version of the fried carrot cake at $2, $2.50 and $3. I decided to go for the black carrot cake as this is my preferred version nowadays.

IMG_9441ed
Carrot Cake 4/5

The radish cake is diced into small cubes and well coated with the dark sweet sauce with a generous topping of eggs. The fragrant fried carrot cake comes with bites of aromatic charred on the radish cake giving it a nice sweet bitterness. I also like the fact that there is still a bit wetness in the egg instead of overly dry.

IMG_9440ed
Carrot Cake 4/5

Overall, I have enjoyed the plate of fried carrot cake by Lee Ta. The sweetness of the dark sauce and the charred edges complemented the radish cake. The texture was not mushy and still comes with a bite delectably served with a generous topping of egg.

Come Daily Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee (天天来炒福建虾面) @ Toa Payoh Lorong 1

IMG_5927ed

When we mentioned about Singapore street food or hawker food, one of the favourite local's hawker dishes is the Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee. It is quite obvious as we can find this dish in almost every food courts and hawker centres. Even so that everyone has its own favourite stall or best fried hokkien mee list. Today I am at Toa Payoh Lorong 1 to check out this popular fried hokkien prawn mee stall called Come Daily Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee (天天来炒福建虾面).

IMG_5943ed
Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee 4.2/5

When I visited the stall on a weekend morning, I noticed a young man behind the wok frying the fried hokkien prawn mee. I could not remember the price of the portion I ordered but it did look very appetizing when it was transferred from his wok to the servicing plate. I could already smelled the aroma from the pork lard from a distance.

IMG_5938ed
Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee 4.2/5

The fried hokkien prawn me here is the moist or gooey type which I like. The delicious stock is well infused into the noodles giving it a very rich and sweet flavour. I personally felt the stock was on the sweet side but from its popularity, it seems like it is well received by many. I would prefer something that is more garlicky. The spicy sambal also comes with a kick that goes well with the slurping good noodles.

IMG_5941ed
Fried Hokkien Mee 4.2/5

Overall I felt that Come Daily Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee (天天来炒福建虾面) gets my thumb up for a delicious plate fried hokkien prawn mee. It will easily made it into my top 10 fried hokkien mee in Singapore.
