Mariners' Corner Restaurant @ Sunset Way - The Hainanese Western Restaurant Has Moved To The West

MarinersCornerSunsetWay-50

Suppose you are fans of Mariners' Corner Restaurant, which used to be at Maritime House. In that case, you will be glad to know that the Hainanese Western restaurant has moved to Sunset Way at Clementi Street 12. Stepping into the restaurant, I felt that I had been transported to the 1980s, giving me a nostalgic feel.

After browsing through the menu, we decided to add an extra $5.80 for a complete set meal, complementing the main course with a bowl of Salad, Soup of the Day, Garlic Bread. Coffee/Tea and dessert.

We started with the Salad Bowl dressed in thousand island sauce, followed by Garlic Bread and Creamy Chicken Soup. There is nothing wow to shout about but classic old-school starters to kickstart the meal before the main course.

Calamari with Tar Tar Sauce 3/5

We decided to order a plate of Calamari with Tar Tar Sauce ($7.50) for the appetiser. Unfortunately, while we enjoyed the crispy batter, we found the squid was a bit rubbery.

New Zealand Ribeye Steak 4.2/5

For my main, I decided to go for the New Zealand Ribeye Steak ($27) served with baked potato and buttered veggies. For the sauces, there are five choices - black pepper, mushroom, garlic shallot, BBQ and sambal. I decided to go for the black pepper sauce for the steak. I find it value-for-money for the quality of beef and price. What I find weird is the topping for the baked potato. It uses deep-fried garlic instead of bacon. I am not sure this is the norm, but I am used to having it with bacon instead of deep-fried garlic.

Grilled King Snapper 2.8/5

My partner has the Grilled King Snapper ($23.50) paired with Almonds with Lemon Butter sauce for the other main. I thought it was lacklustre, lacking the sharpness in flavour to lift the fresh catch. I was expecting it to be more grilled too. Instead, it was too plain, missing the char-grilled aroma.

Finally, wrapping up our set meal is a slice of Fruit Cake with chocolate sauce. Actually, Mariners' Corner reminds me of Jack's Place with its interior decor and food, providing a nostalgic charm that is slowly disappearing in an urbanised country like Singapore.

Sultan Turkish Restaurant @ Bussorah Street - Halal & Authentic Turkish Cuisine In Singapore

SultanTurkish38

Sultan Turkish Restaurant serves some of the most scrumptious Turkish cuisine and sweet delights along Bussorah Street.

SultanTurkish33
Lamb Mandi 4.5/5

The Lamb Mandi ($27.90) is one of the star dishes in this restaurant - Arabic rice cooked with lamb shank stew, served with a whole lamb shank. The tender lamb shank fell apart at a gentle tug. Its relatively strong flavour paired perfectly with the fluffy and aromatic Arabic rice. Elevating the dish further were the accompanying shahawi and special mandi sauce, both addictive on their own - sweet, tangy, fruity and smokey. They lifted the dish with some zing and a kick of flavour.

Cheese Musaka 4/5

SultanTurkish20

Cheese Musaka ($24.90 Chicken/ $26.90 Lamb) comes in either minced lamb or chicken, layered with soft and tender cubed eggplant and potato. I reckoned the potatoes had been fried before, which added a depth of flavour into the dish. It could have been even better if the layer of mozzarella cheese atop could be a lot less. The pilav (rice) served on the side was comforting with a cardamon-forward aroma and had a good bite.

Menemen

For something lighter, try its Menemen ($21.90), commonly known as a brunch dish, Turkish Eggs. A traditional Turkish baked egg dish made with tomato and red bell peppers didn't disappoint with the level of herbs and spices in the sauce. It delivered the expected punch of flavour.

SultanTurkish7
Coban Salad

There are also salads and soups on the menu to complement your meal, such as this refreshing Coban Salad ($11.90), made with diced green peppers, tomato, herbs, and olive, dressed simply in lemon juice.

Kunefe

You must try the Kunefe ($11.90) offered here, served with Turkish goat milk ice cream. Kunefe is a freshly baked shredded filo pastry with butter doused in sugar syrup. Served hot, the centre of the crisped pastry became sticky and chewy with melted kunefe cream and mozzarella cheese. But, of course, nothing beats serving it with cold Turkish goat milk ice cream, which brings all the ingredients together in a sweet and savoury harmony.
