Ah Hoe Mee Pok (阿和面薄) @ Clementi West Street 2

IMG_2477ed

If the East has Bedok 85 Bak Chor Mee, Central has Seng Kee Mushroom Minced Pork Noodles, I would proudly say we at the West has Ah Hoe Mee Pok (阿和面薄). Recently, Ah Hoe Mee Pok has gotten some attention from the blogsphere not just because of the Japanese behind the stall cooking the mee pok but its delicious bowl of mee pok cooked to a nice al dente too.

Some interesting fact about Ah Hoe Mee Pok. In the early days, Mr Kuribaba started a Japanese stall at the current coffeeshop beside Ah Hoe Mee Pok. Fascinated by the way Mr Eric Chia cooked his mee pok, Mr Kuribaba who used to work in a ramen stall in Japanese started apprenticing at Ah Hoe Mee Pok for half a year before taking over the stall in January 2015. He then closed his own Japanese stall. Currently Mr Kuribaba runs the stall with his daughter at block 710 while his son and wife runs another stall at block 713 just a few blocks away.

Special Mee Pok Dry  3.5/5

At Ah Hoe Mee Pok, there are a few selections on their menu. Customers have a choice of ordering the Special Mee Pok Dry/Soup ($4/$5), Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle ($4/$5), Crayfish Mee Pok ($10), Meatball Soup ($3) or Teochew Dumpling Soup ($4)

I have a bowl of the Special Mee Pok Dry ($4) which comes with a prawm, meatballs, abalone slices, minced pork and pork slices. The highlight in the bowl has to be the al dente mee pok that is cooked to a nice springy bite. However I find that the chilli sauce lacked the kick I was expecting and the vinegar does not have that tanginess.

To me the best try at Ah Hoe Mee Pok is not their dry noodles but their soup version. I would highly recommend trying the Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle Soup ($4). First, I think the soup version showcases the springy mee pok even more.

Second, the soup was flavourful and robust. If Seng Kee's soup hits you like a tank with the rich Ti Poh (dried sole fish) flavour, Ah Hoe's soup base is more refine and balance. I felt that this is because of the addition of cabbage, giving it that harmony.

AS Seafood Soup (安盛海鲜汤) @ Depot Road

IMG_2331ed

Many people may have heard of the famous Yan Ji Seafood Soup stall at Woodlands. However not many knows about this humble little stall, AS Seafood Soup (安盛海鲜汤) at Depot Road. It actually moved from Bedok to the current location. According to my brief conversation with the cook that was preparing the seafood soup, I am told that he learnt how to cook the seafood soup from a famous stall in Woodlands. I would suspect it is Yan Ji since the style is very similar.

Crayfish Seafood Soup 4.2/5

At AS Seafood Soup, they basically sells three type of soup. They are Crayfish Seafood Soup ($10/$12), Seafood Soup ($5.50/$7.50) and Promfret Seafood Soup ($10). We had the most expensive crayfish seafood soup at $12 since we have travelled all the way to try it. The soup is cooked with old hen, dried scallop and pork ribs for a good 4 hours to get the rich flavours.

The luxurious bowl of seafood soup comes with crayfish, prawns, fish slices and chunks of minced pork. I have not tried Yan Ji before but accordingly to Maureen, the soup still falls short of the intensive she had at Yan Ji. Nevertheless, this is still a delicious bowl of seafood soup if are not willing to travel all the way to Woodlands.

Braised Pig Trotter 3/5

The stall also sells Braised Pig Trotter ($5/$7). The braising sauce was actually quite good. However the braised pork trotter was a bit tough and on the dry side.

Good news to the people staying in the East. As I draft this blog post, I am glad to tell you they are back in Bedok, with the opening of the 2nd outlet at block 412, Bedok North.
