Nederburg Wines Heritage Heros

IMG_3238ed

Award winning South African wine producer Nederburg Wines (with 200 years of history) has created a selection of limited edition, home made gourmet wines known as Heritage Heros. Each individually named, they have been made to honour some of the major figures in South Africa winemaking who have been a source of inspiration to award winning winemaker Razvan Macici.

The Anchorman - Chenin Blanc 2011

The Anchorman is named after Nederburg’s founder, Philippus Wolvaart, who bought the farm in 1791 and planted Chenin Blanc, amongst other varietals. He had the vision and courage to tame a wilderness and grow great wine. His fingertips are still on every wine we make.

Palate: Well balanced, fresh and fruity with a beautiful minerality and an excellent structure.

The Motorcycle Marvel - Rhone Style Blend 2009

The Motorcycle Marvel honours the legendary winemaker Günter Brőzel, who was cellarmaster at Nederburg from 1956 to 1989. He played a leading role in building Nederburg’s reputation as the most awarded winery in South Africa

Vineyards: The Shiraz grapes were sourced from an award winning bock of trellised vines in the Philadelphia area while the Carignan and Grenache came from old bush vines in Paarl.
Colour:Dark intense red
Bouquet: An abundance of spicy, peppery berry and sweet fruit characters.
Palate: A rich and intense, full bodied explosion of flavour with ripe and silky tannins and an excellent integration between fruit and wood.

The other 2 Heritage Heros Wines which I have not get to try is The Young Airhawk - Sauvignon Blanc 2012 and The Brew Master - Bordeaux Style Blend 2009. Nederburg’s II Centuries Cabernet Sauvignon will also debut in Singapore. A celebration of two centuries of skill, tradition and heritage, II Centuries forms the apex of the multi-tiered range of wines produced by Nederburg. All single-varietal wines, the “best of best” collection of hand-made wines are produced from grapes sourced from the best vines within top-performing vineyards jointly identified by our highly-skilled winemaking and viticultural teams.

The Heritage Heroes range is available at S$39 per bottle and the II Centuries Cabernet Sauvignon is available at S$79 per bottle at DFS. They are also available in popular dining venues and hotel outlets.

L'Atelier TiramiSu @ The Central Clarke Quay

IMG_3114ed

A family run cafe, L'Atelier TiramiSu has opened its door at the basement of The Central @ Clarke Quay. L'Atelier TiramiSu which means the The Tiramisu workshop sells only 1 type of cakes, Tiramisu. Baked freshly daily at the cafe. L'Atelier TiramiSu is probably the only Tiramisu concept cafe in Singapore. Hidden in the basement of The Central, it easiest way is to find the cafe is to take Exit F of Clark Quay MRT station.

Don't be mislead that the cafe sells only the usual Italian dessert of caffeine, mascarpone cheese and cocoa powder. At L'Atelier TiramiSu, they have infused exquisite flavours to the classic taste of tiramisu creating a perfect blend of exquisite and traditional. Currently L'Atelier offers 4 different flavours in the Classico, Lychee, Dark Cherry and Matcha. Interestingly, L'Atelier TiramSu's tiramisu is made using the Bain-Marie method and laced with different liqueurs.

Dark Cherry Tiramisu 4/5 and Classico Tiramisu 4.2/5

The Dark Cherry Tiramisu (slice $6.80/pc, cake $48) is laced with a combination of orange liqueur and cognac. It  has a strong alcohol bitterness that was nicely balanced with the sweetness of the cherry. It has a much stronger flavour compared to the other 3 tiramsu I tried. This will be well received with those that like their tiramisu to have a strong liqueur content.

If the dark cherry is the north pole, the best seller Classico (slice $6.80/pc, cake $48) will be the south pole. The classic tiramsu was light, smooth and creamy coupled with aromatic coffee soaked layers. By the way, the coffee used to make their tiramisu is from Liberty Coffee beans.

Matcha Tiramisu 4.5/5 and Lychee Tiramisu 3.8/5

Matcha Tiramisu (slice $6.80/pc, cake $48) may not be new but the version at L'Atelier TiramiSu is laced with dark rum. The sweetness of the green tea soaked biscuit together with the creamy lightness of the cake was a delightful enjoyment.

While the others enjoyed the fruity Lychee Tiramisu (slice $6.80/pc, cake $48) which is laced with Lychee liqueur and vodka, it fell just short for me. I thought the liqueur content was a tad too much. It shadowed the refreshing fruity lychee flavour I was expecting. Nevertheless, that is one of the reasons why there are different flavours to suit each individual's palate.

Sampling Set

For those that cannot decide which flavours to go for, you may want to check out the Sampling Set ($15). The sampling set offers you a glimpse of each flavours before deciding whether to get a slice or the whole cake. Each cake measures 7 inch.

Latte 4/5

Camomile Honey 4/5

To complement with the delectable tiramisu, L'Atelier TiramiSu also offers a selection of beverage. For caffeine lovers, the cafe uses a blend from Liberty Coffee. Non-caffeine drivers can try a range of Latisaniere Teas imported from France or Arizona Teas from America. We tried the Latte ($4.50) and Camomile Honey ($3). Drinking the Camomile Honey Tea is like doing a science experiment in the lab. First you pour the tea from the 150ml beaker into the glass of ice cubes made from the tea. Then you add the syrup from the 50ml beaker to the glass.

L'Atelier TiramiSu is more of a takeaway shop with its small seating capacity of 10-12 people. If you decide to takeaway, the packaging comes with an elegant black and red box which is also appropriate as a gift.
