One Prawn & Co @ MacPherson Road - Brand New 12-Course Seafood Grill Dinner Situated In A Coffee Shop

IMG_8139

One Prawn & Co by Chef Gwyneth Ang is best known for its robust prawn noodle claypot soup, recognised by the Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2022. While retaining its signature offering in the day, Chef Gwyneth wants to spice things up by transforming her coffee shop in MacPherson into a space to offer her brand new 12-Course Seafood Grill Dinner at night. The team carefully picks and procures all seafood ingredients, and dietary restrictions can be highlighted prior.

IMG_8134

Made available from 21 February 2023, the seafood-focused menu is set at $128 per pax with a minimum of 2 to dine, with the choice of a top-up of $30 per pax for the free flow sake of the day. Diners can also opt for curated seasonal sakes that are rotated bi-monthly or other alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

IMG_8135
Amaebi

To start off our dinner, we had an amuse-bouche of Amaebi. Topped on a crisp rice flower are avocado, tomatoes and sweet amaebi.

IMG_8136
Starters

Next was a 4-item starter: a fresh Hyogo Oyster paired with mignonette granita, cured Amberjack with soy and crisp seaweed, poached White Shrimp with coconut and garam masala, and Soft Shell Crab in tempura style with a unique choice of kicap manis.

Our favourite was the White Shrimp for the harmonious blend of flavours - especially the choice of garam masala gave it a fragrant touch of heat.

IMG_8137
Maitake Mushrooms on Bed of Burnt Barley Risotto 4.2/5

Moving on to the sharing plates, the Maitake Mushrooms impressed me with their earthiness and the great bite from the bed of burnt barley risotto underneath. We enjoyed this but wished the portion was bigger and the smokiness could come through a tad more.

IMG_8138
Squid ‘Noodles’ with Salsa Verde, Black Olives 4.5/5

This Squid 'Noodles' with Salsa Verde had appetising salsa verde paired with squid noodles carrying a lovely smokiness. The zestiness, tanginess and hint of spice were perfect.

IMG_8140
Scottish King Scallop with XO Chilli Jam 4.8/5

One of our favourites for the night was the Scottish King Scallop with XO Chilli Jam. While the king scallop was plump, tender and smokey, the flavour-packed XO chilli jam stole the show for us. It came in a generous portion of scallop shreds that carried just the right kick of spice. I would be the first to join the queue if Chef Gwyneth decides to sell this addictive chilli jam by the bottle!

IMG_8141
Pork with Apple Compote 3.5/5

The highlight for proteins was the Onglet, a hanging tender steak with sunchoke cream and chives. As we don't take beef, it was replaced with Pork. Even though the grilled pork's texture was spot on, the seasoning was too salty.

IMG_8142
Charcoal Grilled Turbot with Garlic Brown Butter and Capers 4.2/5

We were eyeing the Turbot as soon as Chef Gwyneth started grilling it over the bed of charcoal. The resulting fish meat was light, tender and flaky, paired with a heavier mix of garlic brown butter and capers. The unassuming pickled papaya salad on the side provided a contrasting acidity which balanced the overall dish.

IMG_8143
Abalone Pao Fan 4.8/5

We were already quite full at this point of the meal but still wiped the Abalone Pao Fan clean. The dish is served in a claypot. One Prawn & Co's signature prawn bisque served as the base, with baby abalones, egg floss, rice puffs and rice added on. The rice puffs lost their crunchiness quickly, but the rich and hearty broth was more than satisfying.

IMG_8144

IMG_8145
Desserts

Dessert was a combination of Seasonal Fruits and Mini Ice Cream cones with burnt white chocolate ice cream. We appreciate the special attention down to the fruits, which were extremely sweet.

Note that reservations must be made via https://bit.ly/oneprawnandco as limited seats are available each day.

Yue Bai (月白) @ Duxton Road - A Contemporary Expression Of Shi Liao Gastronomy And Chinese Culture

YueBai37

Yue Bai (月白) is a modern Chinese restaurant helmed by Singaporean co-owner and Chef Lee Hongwei. The cuisine at Yue Bai is based on the principles of traditional Chinese dietary therapy (食疗 shi liao) through refreshing renditions of Chinese heritage dishes.

YueBai1
Australian Lamb Jelly 3.5/5

YueBai6
Crispy Burdock 4.2/5

We started dinner with a couple of appetisers. The Crispy Burdock ($14) coated with sesame and spice powder is an addictive and delicious snack. On the other hand, the Australian Lamb Jelly ($22) is a rendition of the traditional Teochew pork trotter jelly. The shredded lamb meat is combined with black bean and chicken stock and chilled for at least a day. It is paired with shredded passionfruit-infused pumpkin giving it a refreshing touch to cleanse the richness.

YueBai3
Roselle Flower-infused Winter Melon 3/5

YueBai8
Deep-fried Organic Purple Rice Cake 4.2/5

The Roselle Flower-infused Winter Melon ($12) is very appetising with its sweet and sour taste profile, perfect for whetting up the appetite. However, my favourite is the Deep-fried Organic Purple Rice Cake ($16), which is topped with housemade XO Sauce, rice puffs and spring onions.

YueBai10
Double-boiled Silkie Chicken Soup 4/5

The Double-boiled Silkie Chicken Soup ($22) is a delicious and nourishing bowl of goodness. The addition of dried longan and wolfberries provided the additional finishing sweetness.

YueBai14
Stir-fried Lotus Root, Fuji Apple, Corn Kernel, Pumpkin Seeds, Dried Shrimp 4.2/5

The Stir-fried Lotus Root, Fuji Apple, Corn Kernel, Pumpkin Seeds, Dried Shrimp ($24) is the Chef's vegetarian take on the Guangdong classic of sauteed minced duck served with lettuce leaf. The diced vegetables and apple offers delightful layers of texture.

YueBai17
Braised Napa Cabbage, Fried Garlic 4.5/5

It may look simple, but the Braised Napa Cabbage ($24) is soft and sweet. The whole baby Napa cabbage is braised in chicken stock until soft. It is served with fried garlic, adding body to the broth.

YueBai21
Crisp-fried Pork Cartilage, Xin Hui Orange Sauce, Crispy Tofu Ring 4/5

The Crisp-fried Port Cartilage ($38) is first braised with Xin Hui mandarin peel in superior chicken stock, then deep-fried and finished in mandarin peel sauce. It comes in a crispy tofu ring made with firm tofu and millet, somewhat like the classic yam ring. The citrus notes of the aged mandarin peel balance out the richness of the pork cartilage.

YueBai27
Braised Duck, Sea Cucumber, Hawthorn, Korean Snow Pear 4/5

The Braised Sea Cucumber with Duck ($58) is a traditional Hokkien speciality given a modern take. Chef Hongwei added Korean snow pear for sweetness and dried hawthorn berries for tartness. Not only is it delicious, but it also helps to improve digestion and blood circulation.

YueBai29
Crisp-fried Prawn with Granola and Dried Fruits 4.2/5

Having eaten cereal prawns, pairing them with granola and dried fruits is new to me. The Crisp-fried Prawn with Granola and Dried Fruits ($36) with its crispy coat is a delightful texture enjoyment.

YueBai31
Braised Hokkien Hu Tou Vermicelli 4/5

The Braised Hokkien Hu Tou Vermicelli ($35) is Chef Hongwei's childhood memories. Chef's grandmother would prepare a Henghwa version featuring a myriad of seafood. Chef's rendition braises the Hu Tu rice vermicelli from Anhui, Fujian, in superior chicken stock, served with abalone, sea cucumber, Chinese mushrooms, Chinese chives, and beansprouts. It is topped with dried sole fish crumble and crisp Henghwa first harvest black seaweed, imparting an umami and minerality finish.

YueBai35
Herbal Poached Rice, Atlantic Cod, Black Fungus 4.5/5

My favourite dish for dinner goes to the Herbal Poached Rice ($38) with Atlantic Cod and Black Fungus. It is an elevated rendition of the traditional Teochew fish porridge. It is served in a hot stone pot. The egg yolk fried rice, black fungus and cod fillet are finished tableside with fish broth and herbal Shaoxing wine.

YueBai38
Crispy Black Sesame Mochi, Osmanthus Sugar 4/5

We had the Crispy Black Sesame Mochi ($12) paired with Osmanthus Sugar for dessert. The delightful soft and chewy mochi's texture is coated with aromatic sesames, deep-fried to fragrant. It comes with osmanthus sugar on the side for an extra lift in flavour.

YueBai43
Housemade Beancurd with Hashima 4.5/5

A must-have is the Housemade Beancurd with Hashima ($38). You can have it as original or with the accompanying pi pa syrup for a refreshing and minty lift in taste profile.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

Edition Rooftop Bar & Restaurant @ Citadines Connect City Centre Hotel - Chic New Gastro Bar Serving Asian-Western Dishes At Newly Opened Hotel

Photo 12-11-22, 12 35 50 PM

Photo 12-11-22, 12 34 53 PM

Crowning the newly opened Citadines Connect City Centre Hotel located in the heart of Orchard Road is Edition Rooftop Bar & Restaurant, which spans over 3,000 sq ft and boasts an al fresco garden seating in addition to its indoor setting. A full-fledged restaurant by day, and contemporary, über chic gastrobar from sundown, patrons of Edition can enjoy a delightful brunch, savour updated local and international culinary creations or revel in a wide curation of signature and popular cocktails, fine wines and spirits of exceptional quality from the Breakfast Edition and Daily Edition (lunch and dinner) menus.

Photo 12-11-22, 12 41 10 PM
Edition's Cioppino 4/5

Kickstart the meal with the Edition's starter - the Edition's Cioppino ($18) is made with white wine, tomato seafood broth, clams, prawns, basil and parsley. The hearty seafood broth was packed with rich flavours and natural fresh sweetness from the seafood.

Photo 12-11-22, 12 38 09 PM
Charred Broccoli 4/5

The Charred Broccoli ($12) may look like a simple dish, but it was executed perfectly with crunchy yet soft broccoli, garlic aioli, and kailan puree, complete with parmesan and shredded seaweed to elevate its flavours.

Photo 12-11-22, 12 46 13 PM
Not Your Ordinary Ham & Cheese 4/5

The Not Your Ordinary Ham & Cheese ($22) was indeed not so ordinary, with crispy grilled sourdough, miso mustard, country-style ham, serrano ham, and melted brie. It is an intensified rendition of the classic ham & cheese sandwich. We enjoyed the cheesy goodness a lot.

Photo 12-11-22, 12 39 22 PM
Catalonian's Pick 3.8/5

The Catalonian's Pick ($18) comes with grilled tiger prawns, romesco sauce, pickled red chilli, fried shallots and sesame seaweed. The prawns leaned towards the bland side, which is tasteless. I will advise diners to thoroughly coat them in the romesco sauce for a lift in flavours.

Photo 12-11-22, 12 48 07 PM
Senor Pork 4.2/5

The Edition's mains consist of dishes such as the Senor Pork ($42), which features perfectly grilled Spanish Iberico pork shoulder paired with rhubarb chutney, roasted pumpkin puree, burnt butter cream, and a side of crispy grilled baby cabbage. The pork shoulder was superbly tender and succulent, and I liked that the pumpkin puree and burnt butter cream lent a nice sweetness to the savoury dish.

En Yakiniku @ Middle Road (Bugis) - New Japanese Yakiniku & Sake Bar Offering An Authentic Japanese BBQ Experience

EnYakiniku2

Many yakiniku restaurants have opened around Singapore in recent months offering Japanese BBQ experience, ranging from affordable selections at coffeeshops to premium and rare meat cuts at full-service restaurants. En Yakiniku is one of the latest yakiniku concepts to be opened in Bugis. It takes over the now-defunct Captain K Seafood Tower.

EnYakinikuInterior-1

While waiting for the rest of the group to arrive, we started with some snacks to munch on. We had the Grilled Dried Thread-Sail Filefish ($15.40), Grilled Dried Pufferfish ($15.40) and Deep-fried Sweet Shrimp ($5.40).

EnYakiniku18
Grilled Dried Thread-Sail Filefish and Grilled Dried Pufferfish 4/5

EnYakiniku69
Deep-fried Sweet Shrimp 4/5

The delightful snacks can double up as bar bites to complement the drinks.

EnYakiniku35
Yakitori 3.5/5

EnYakiniku68
Chawanmushi 4.2/5

If you don't have the patience to wait for the meat to be cooked or just want a quick meal, there are several cooked items on the menu, such as Yakitori ($12), Donburi and Chawanmushi ($3.40)

EnYakiniku6

EnYakiniku53
Prime Short Rib, Beef Chuck, Oyster Blade 4.2/5

Beef lovers can look forward to a good variety of cuts at En Yakinkiu. We started with three types of cuts, starting with the US Prime Short Rib ($28.90), US Beef Chuck ($17.90) and Oyster Blade ($17.90).

EnYakiniku21

EnYakiniku29
A4 Wagyu Ribeye, A4 Wagyu Striploin 4.5/5

There are premium cuts, such as the Miyazaki A4 Wagyu Ribeye ($54.90) and Miyazaki A4 Wagyu Striploin ($54.90), for their beautiful marbling, giving it the melt-in-the-mouth texture.

EnYakiniku39
Gyu Tan 4.2/5

The more adventurous can go for the Gyu Tan ($21.90), which has a delightful crunchy texture once grilled.

EnYakiniku8
Chestnut-fed Duroc Pork Belly 4/5

EnYakiniku13
Spanish Pork Jowl 4/5

You need not worry if you are a non-beef eater. The Chestnut-fed Duroc Pork Belly ($15.90) and Spanish Pork Jowl ($15.90) are excellent options that are as satisfying as the beef cuts. In addition, the pork oil from the grilling emits a fragrant aroma enhancing the enjoyment.

EnYakiniku44

EnYakiniku59
Tiger Prawn 4.2/5

We even had Tiger Prawn ($22) from the seafood selection to complete the yakiniku experience at En Yakiniku.

Overall, I enjoyed the food at the En Yakiniku. The pricing and the quality of meats and seafood served it is reasonable. Some may argue that you can find cheaper options. I agree but compare the quality or how thinly these places sliced their meats.
