The Singapore Tea Party by Sensodyne

IMG_1229ed

The Singapore Tea Party by Sensodyne took place at The Duxton Hotel on 20 Jun 2015 attended by 20 selected guests and their friends, who have voted at http://www.facebook.com/SensodyneSG where both Maureen (aka MissTamChiak) and me has nominated our favourite dessert places. The exciting afternoon gathered seven dessert vendors under one roof allowing us to mingle, indulge and share our great little moments together with the guests.

SGTeaParty4

We are very thankful to the various dessert vendors taking their time off to spend the afternoon servicing us with the beautiful hot and cold desserts. We have the following nominated dessert vendors at the Singapore Tea Party with their yummylicious offerings,

1) Alfero Gelato
2) Lady M
3) Jin Jin Mango Ice Kachang
4) No Name Cheng Tng
5) Pacamara
6) Tong Heng
7) Udders

SGTeaParty3

The beautiful emcee officially opened the Singapore Tea Party with a brief introduction of the various dessert vendors. After that, the guests are invited to “dig in” to the spread of desserts.  Quoting  from Maureen. “Don’t think about slimming down, just enjoy to your heart filled”

SGTeaParty5

It was a dessert heaven at the Singapore Tea Party. I was actually feeling kind of overwhelmed with the buffet of desserts, not knowing where to start with. From gelato, cake , coffee, traditional egg tart, traditional hot and cold desserts, we are spoilt of choices.

SGTeaParty1

As a token to all the participating dessert vendors, both Maureen (MissTamChiak,.com) and me signed a certificate of appreciation and presented it to the participating dessert vendors. Once again this party will not be possible without their support.

SGTeaParty2

There was also an instagram contest where 2 winners picked by Maureen and me, get to walk away with $100 worth of GSK products. A surprised People’s Choice award was also presented to Udders which has gotten the highest number of votes among the 12 nominated dessert vendors.

DSCF0079

The Singapore Tea Party is just only a small part from us to share our great little moments with our fans and readers. If you have your own Great Little Moments, why not share it on http://www.sensodyne.com.sg/great-little-moments.aspx and stands a chance to win a staycation at Resorts World Sentosa’s Ocean Suites.

Jade Restaurant @ Fullerton Hotel Singapore: Celebrate SG50 with Nostalgic Feast Menu

IMG_7618

It's been years since I last had a lobster platter. I am not referring to the popular seafood in plastic bags these days, but those old-school lobster fruit salad with spring rolls and fried prawn rolls (hei zhor) typically served as the first dish during Chinese wedding dinners.

IMG_7630

This July, Master Chef Leong Chee Yeng of the Fullerton's Jade Restaurant pays tribute to Singapore's 50th birthday by presenting his Nostalgic Feast Menu which features classic Cantonese delights from the 70s and 80s. Curated together with Straits Times restaurant reviewer and food critic Wong Ah Yoke, the dishes not only include the extravagant lobster platter, but also familiar home-style favourites like the Claypot Pig's Knuckle with Plum Sauce and Double Boiled Winter Melon Soup.

IMG_7650
Crispy Yam with Kung Bao Chicken and Cashew Nuts 4.2/5

One of my favourite dishes that evening was the Crispy Yam with Kung Bao Chicken and Cashew Nuts. Infused with dried chilli, the sweet and smoky sauce coated the chicken chunks evenly, making this a welcome change to the typical stir-fry seafood and celery filling.

IMG_7656
Pan Fried King Prawns in Special Sauce 4.5/5

In fact this nostalgic feast menu not only captivated taste buds but also satisfied our visual appetites as the talented chef transformed every single dish into a work of art.

Just like the elegant swan that was carved out from the humble white radish, a magnificent Merlion stood tall and proud, overlooking the gigantic Pan Fried King Prawns in Special Sauce ($23 per 220g). Delivering much more meat than an average crayfish or even a Maine lobster, each prawn melded beautifully with the tantalizing blend of Chinese barbeque sauce, tomato ketchup and sesame oil.

IMG_7641
Nostalgic Steamed Bading Fish 3.5/5

Carved so deftly from carrots, the “fish net” draped onto the Nostalgic Steamed Bading Fish ($9 per 100g) made this creature seemed alive and breathing. It was bathed in a rich bean paste gravy that rounded off some of the unpleasant muddiness often found in this fish. However, I would appreciate this dish better if other kinds of fish were used.

IMG_7654
Roast Chicken 4/5

When was the last time you had colorful Keropok with roast chicken? With a crackling-crisp skin riding above the smooth tender chicken, this delicious bird which was mainly served at weddings or birthday banquets during the 1960s and 1970s, earned itself a deserving spot in the menu.

IMG_7663
Chinese Eight Treasures Duck 4.2/5

Whether one was a fan of duck to begin with or not, this Chinese Eight Treasures Duck ($90 per duck) lured everyone with its wonderful fragrance when it was sliced apart to reveal eight mouth-watering fillings including salted egg yolk, roast pork belly, dry scallops and glutinous rice. The meat was moist and flavourful, thanks to a tedious overnight marinating process.

IMG_7672
Braised Bird's Nest with Almond Tofu, Pan-Fried Red Bean Cake, Chinese Sugar Egg Puff and Steamed Layered Cake with Salted Egg and Nuts (*available as platter in set dinner menus) 4/5

The dessert platter is no less a mesmerizing work of art as Chef Leong showcased his beautiful lotus flower constructed from gelatin instead of sugar which is used by most of his western counterparts. Neatly piled beneath the plant are simple yet tasty creations like the Steamed Layered Cake with Salted Egg and Nuts ($10), as well as the deep-fried Chinese Sugar Egg Puff ($10). Made with only flour, sugar and eggs, this golden bomb has an airy, stretchy-like interior beneath a lightly sugared shell. A must try especially for those who have not tried this in their life before!

All the dishes are available as ala carte (prices reflected above for 2-4 persons) or as set menu priced at $85++ for 2 persons and above/$125++ for 6 persons and aboave. Do note that Double Boiled Winter Melon Soup and Chinese Eight Treasures Duck require 24-hour advance order. As Mr Wong Ah Yoke succinctly expressed, "Seeing these dishes on the dinner table again not only reminds us of happy occasions from the past but also how far we have come". There is truly no better time than this July to retrace the good old flavors through Chef Leong's nostalgic dishes with your family.

Beegurt @ Thomson V Two (Upper Thomson)

IMG_9857ed

Located in the humble corner of Thomson V Two, is this little frozen yogurt or froyo place, Beegurt. This is one of the latest craze with numerous similar concept outlets popping out in different parts of the island.

IMG_9852ed
Frozen Yogurt 4.5/5

Basically the frozen yogurt comes with 3 different sizes, small, medium and large that ranges from $4.50 to $6.50. Respectively the different size also comes with a choice of 1 to 3 toppings from an eclectic selection of fresh ingredients.

IMG_9856ed

What I enjoyed about the frozen yogurt is its smooth texture that comes with a bit of sourish, giving it a refreshing enjoying especially for the hot and humid Singapore's weather.

IMG_9849ed

Among the couple of frozen yogurt that I have tried, I have to say this is one of my favourite. Flavourful and smooth with choices of topping ingredients at a flat price. It is unlike some place that goes by the weigh (inclusive of the toppings) that can be quite expensive.

Bread Street Kitchen @ Marina Bay Sands

IMG_7549

As a self-confessed TV food show addict who counts Gordon Ramsay's shows as those that would stop me from switching to another channel, I saw how he yelled at the contestants in the F Word and Hell’s Kitchen. At the same time, I also remembered how he boldly embarked on an exotic food adventure to the unexplored territories of North East India like Guwahati and Majuli Island in Gordon's Great Escape, attempting to impress the locals with his curry after mixing with the community for a few days.

But don't get me wrong. I am neither a die-hard fan nor a critic of this celebrity chef. More than his TV persona, I have been very curious about the flavours and textures of his dishes. Hence, I was very excited to learn that Chef Ramsay has finally opened his third restaurant in Asia right at the premium Marina Bay Sands. This comes after his first restaurant at Conrad Tokyo in 2005 and Bread Street Kitchen & Bar in Hong Kong last year.

bsk

Designed to fit to the brand's East London industrial roots, Bread Street Kitchen offers a truly relaxing dining experience without the rigid pressures of fine-dining. But perhaps cutting straight to the chase, I must confess that the dishes were very impressive, right from the starters to the desserts.

IMG_7532
Roasted Veal Carpaccio 4.2/5

Take for example this Roasted Veal Carpaccio ($26) from the cold starters section. I've had beef and horse carpaccio but not yet a veal version. These pinkish slices were succulent and not too gamey, tossed in shredded tuna dressing and dill pickles for a refreshing vibe.

IMG_7537
Potted Salt Beef Brisket 4/5

For a classic Scottish dish, try the Potted Salt Beef Brisket ($18) with grain mustard and piccalilli (a kind of salty-sour Indian relish). Some might think of it as corned beef, but I say this is more like a funky British-Indie hybrid that makes a fabulous filling on the aromatic caraway crackers.

IMG_7568
Roasted Black Cod 3.8/5

Main courses range from $26 to $44, with the Roasted Black Cod ($44) being ranked at the top of the list. Not much complicated cooking involved here, but it was a straightforward dish that would speak to your soul with its impeccable freshness in a mellow red wine and lemon sauce. In fact, the sides of crushed potato, salted capers and artichokes complemented the fish so well that this dish would be incomplete without one element or another.

IMG_7566
Traditional Fish and Chips 4.2/5

That said, the elegant cod fish did not make quite a big splash compared to the Traditional Fish and Chips ($26). The fish beneath the golden crisp batter is meaty yet delicate, needing no further adornment other than the likes of tartar sauce and sweet crushed peas. As such, one will commit a grave mistake to strike this classic British beer food out from the menu because this may just be one of the most delicious version you can find outside UK.

IMG_7555
Dingley Dell Pork Belly 4.5/5

Another star dish was the Dingley Dell Pork Belly ($28). As the name suggests, the pork is sourced from a welfare-friendly outdoor pig farm in Suffolk, England. The crunchy bites of the golden crackling was symphony to the ears and the meat was tender without being greasy. Brightened with the light acidity from spiced apple puree, this dish can be paired with a selection of innovative cocktails and world wines from the "interactive" bar area overlooking the scenic waterfront of Marina Bay.

IMG_7587
Monkey Shoulder Cranachan Cheesecake with Roasted Balsamic Strawberries 3.5/5

Most restaurants often neglect the desserts section but Bread Street Kitchen is a rare exception with eight options, each of high calibre. The Monkey Shoulder Cranachan Cheesecake with Roasted Balsamic Strawberries ($18) won the hearts of many with its playful textures of thin cocoa crisps atop the sticky pud but this dish has the potential to up its ante on the complexity given that it costs about 3-4 times more than a cheesecake from an average patisserie.

IMG_7596
Coffee and White Chocolate Parfait 4.2/5

The Chocolate Fondant with Salted Caramel ($20) was profound in cacao notes but I preferred the Coffee and White Chocolate Parfait with poached blackberries ($18) as its incredible soft and cloud-like texture—somewhat in between an espuma and crème fraiche but not a panna cotta—came as a welcome surprise. The subtly sweet fluff dissipated within seconds in your mouth, leaving behind traces of alcohol scents which stubbornly lingered on.

IMG_7600
Treacle Tart with Crème Fraiche Ice Cream 4/5

For a truly old-school British dessert, nothing beats the Treacle Tart with Crème Fraiche Ice Cream ($18). With golden syrup being a non-negotiable ingredient of this dessert, the sweetness might not rally enough supporters but there was a nice, sticky chewiness to the filling cupped within a superb crust. Otherwise, the unique Pineapple Carpaccio with coconut sorbet will bring a zesty and rather unpredictable ending to a British European feast.

As Chef Ramsay said at the start of the meal "You'll want to share a bed with the desserts tonight" Yes, he may be a controversial public figure but when it comes to his food, I think there is nothing much to dispute about.

The Carving Board @ Yuhua Village (Jurong East)

IMG_0426ed

The wooden board and the mouth watering western food has been appearing on my instagram timeline lately so I decided to make my way down to The Carving Board at Jurong East to check out this modernize hawker stall inside a coffeeshop in Jurong East.

IMG_0429ed
Battered Calamari Rings with Curry Mayo Sauce 2.5/5

We started with some light bites in the Battered Calamari Rings with Curry Mayo Sauce ($4.50). Unfortunately, this taste like frozen calamari with non of the springy texture innard, Instead it was some sort of powdery. I would suggest giving it a miss.

IMG_0425ed
Mixed Grill 4/5

From the Premium House Grill section of the menu, I ordered the Mixed Grill ($17) to get a taste of everything. Served on a wooden board, there was beef steak, bratwurst, rosemary chicken chop with toasted bread and salad. All premium house grill comes with a choice of side and sauce. The beef steak was ok but not the best cut. The favourite on the plate has to be the rosemary chicken chop that is flavourful and grilled to a tender juicy bite.

IMG_0428ed
150 Days Australian Angus Flank Steak 4/5

The other selection on the premium house grill menu I tried is the 150 days Australian Angus Flank Steak ($16). I had my flank cooked medium so that it would not end up too tough. The beautiful beef comes with a chewy bite but it was easy for the teeth and enjoyable.

IMG_0421ed

Overall I find that the new concept has brought hawker food somewhat into a new and modernize level while keeping truth to serving good quality food. Price is quite reasonable with the quality The Carving Board is offering. Aston also started from a hawker stall and maybe The Carving Board can be the next Aston if they continue to work hard and maintain its quality and standard.

Old Hong Kong Kitchen Home Delivery

Free-Delivery-2-2
I have known of pizza or fast food delivery but restaurant quality Chinese cuisine delivered right to the doorstep is something new. Not known to many, Old Hong Kong Kitchen has recently introduced home delivery with no GST or Service Charge. There is even free delivery if one orders $80 or more in net spending (promotional period). After that a flat rate of $6 for any parts of Singapore.

IMG_0477ed

Browsing through the website, I had a hard time deciding what to order. I was overwhelmed by the number of items available for home delivery. There are more than a hundred food items ranging from appetizers, soup, mains, dessert and even dim sum.

IMG_0462ed
Daily Double Boiled Soup of the Day 4/5

When the Daily Double Boiled Soup of the Day ($6.80) arrived from the delivery, it was still warm. My advice is to heat it up again before consuming to enjoy the full sweetness of the ingredients that has been boiled for hours. Do note that the bowl is rather small portion which is only good for one pax.

IMG_0458ed
Poached Vegetables with Salted Egg & Century Egg in Superior Stock 4.2/5

One of my favourite dishes among the delivery I have ordered is the Poached Vegetables with Salted Egg & Century Egg in Superior Stock ($20). The highlight has to be the superior stock complemented by the salted egg and century egg, giving the whole dish a boost in flavours and enjoyment.

IMG_0465ed
Soon Hock Fish 3.8/5

When I saw they offered steamed fish in their delivery menu, I got me some what excited. I wonder how they going to manage the doneness of the fish as consideration has to be put in on the journey time. I ordered the Soon Hock Fish ($54) in Hong Kong Style. The sauce of the fish is delivered separately, to be poured over the fish before consuming. The fish itself was cooked to a nice moist and tender texture considering the among of time it has left the kitchen to my home. Of course it can't be compared to having a la minute steamed fish served from the kitchen to the table in the restaurant.

IMG_0471ed
BBQ Meat Platter (3 Types) 4/5

Last but not least, I decided to wrap up my first Chinese home delivery meal with a 3 types of BBQ Meat Platter ($48) which is good to served 4-6 pax. I decided to go for the Roasted Duck, Soya Sauce Chicken and Sio Bak. The roasts were all chopped to a nice generous portion. My favourite among the 3 different roasts is the roasted duck.

IMG_0474ed

Overall I find the Old Hong Kong Kitchen Chinese food home delivery offers a alternative choice to your usual pizza or fast food. With more than 100 over food items in their delivery menu, there is so much choices, imagine you can even enjoy dim sum in the comfort of your home.

Les Amis @ Shaw Centre

LesAmis

Les Amis, ranked 13th on San Pellegrino's Asia's Top 50 Restaurants list in 2015 has recently undergone a $1.5 million facelift. I was privileged to be able to check out the new look with its new furniture, carpets and paintings. The sparkling gem of the whole revamp has to be the one-in-the-world customized Charvet island cooking suite hand-built from scratch from France to complement the eco-friendliness of the kitchen.

IMG_0012ed
Bread Basket 4.2/5

The dinner experience at Les Amis started with a Bread Basket of a warm in-house bakes. In the basket, there were bacon and mustard breadstick, tomato and basil bread, sourdough and baguette.

IMG_0014ed
White Asparagus "Blanc Mange" 3.5/5

Shortly after, a light and delicate jelly of asparagus with oscietra caviar was served. The White Asparagus Blanc Mange was a pleasing starter with the priced caviar.

IMG_0018ed
Foie Gras & Eel 4/5

I though the Foie Gras & Eel pairing is rather rare. The pan seared foie gras and French river eel were served with citrus fruit compote and dashi. I like the addition of sesame giving it another layer of flavour adn texture.

IMG_0021ed
Organic French Camus Artichoke 3.8/5

The Organic French Camus Artichoke is a new tasting experience for me. The artichoke is stuffed with tomato in combination with smoked eel and dashi. It felt as if I was eating portobello mushroom.

IMG_0022ed
Wild Scottish Salmon 4.2/5

Following that I had the Wild Scottish Salmon served in two way with aromatiques aromates. Like the way it is lightly pan seared on the exterior while retaining a nice moist and pinkish melted in the mouth inside.

IMG_0028ed
Charcoal Grilled Pork Loin 4.5/5

For the mains, we moved on to the Charcoal Grilled Pork Loin. Grilled to a nice tender, the layer of fats which is just appropriate, enhanced the whole play of texture and enjoyment. This is definitely the highlight of the night for me.

IMG_0025ed
Japanese Omi Beef 4.5/5

Another option for the main is the Japanese Omi Beef with asparagus and traditional poivrade sauce, one of the three most famous kind of beef in Japan. Cooked perfectly to a nice juicy pink medium rare, this is heavenly on the palate.

IMG_0030ed
Dark Chocolate P125 Souffle with Tahiti Vanilla Cream 4/5

IMG_0031ed
Petit Fours 4/5

Wrapped up the dinner on a sweet note with the Dark Chocolate P125 Souffle with Tahiti Vanilla Cream and Petit Fours. The intensity of the valrhoha P125 chocolate gave the souffle a sinful bittersweet richness that is so hard not to go back for more of it.

It is really an experience dining at Les Amis. The quality of the food and service has been top notch. No wonder it has been ranked among the elite restaurants around the world. Even though so, pricing has been kept rather reasonable and affordable for an exquisite experience.
