Yong's Teochew Kueh @ Upper Serangoon Road

This Teochew Kueh stall has been around at Upper Serangoon Road for a long time. Every weekend morning I would see a long queue of people eating and buying Teochew Kueh from the stall.

My favourite is the soon kueh here. I enjoyed the fullest of its filling and the smooth silky skin.

Peony Jade Durian Mooncake

During the Mid Autumn Festival, I would buy mooncakes home  for my family. It is a kind of Chinese tradition that I will do every year. Even companies will send mooncakes to their customers as gift during this festive occasion.

Mooncakes nowadays came in all sort of creativity. Even hotels and restaurants came out with their own signature mooncake. Being a durian lover, I could not resist buying the Peony Jade durian mooncake, especially when it is 100% pure top grade Mao Shan Wang durian.

The strong durian aroma filled the air once I sliced the mooncake. The durian filling was very rich and nice. Unfortunately I thought the pandan snowskin was a bad combination which spoilt the richness taste of the durian filling.

VeganBurg @ Jalan Eunos

Think Fast Food is junk food? Think again. This phrase is painted on the wall of the new concept fast food restaurant, VeganBurg at Jalan Eunos. Yes they are selling vegetarian burgers, buns made from wholemeal organic grains and patties that are free of gluten and genetically modified organism.

Currently, VeganBurg offers 5 different type of burgers namely, Cracked Pepper Mayo, Hawaiian Pineapple, Smoky BBQ, Char-Grilled Satay and Tangy Tartar which were designed to provide different nutrients.

Sample of the menu

I ordered the Cracked Pepper Mayo meal (which contains Omega 3, Omega 6, Zinc) while my partner ordered the Smoky BBQ meal (which contains Beta-Carotene). The meal also included fries and juice. Surprisingly, the burgers tasted very yummy. It was way beyond my expectation for a vegetarian burger. The cracked pepper mayo patty had a nice soya flavour while the smoky BBQ patty had a mushroomy flavour. Being a meat person, I was worried that I may not have the "filling" satisfaction but I was wrong. I felt full and satisfied after the meal.

There is another unique concept at VeganBurg. They used Mesh Tin to serve their burgers. I have taken a picture of it after finishing my burgers and removing the paper

Texas Chicken @ Singapore Expo

Another new fried chicken fast food chain, Texas Chicken has opened  or relaunched in Singapore after KFC, Popeye and Arnold. I mentioned relaunched because I remembered there was Texas Chicken in the 1980's if my memories were correct. Nevertheless, thanks to Select Group, they have brought Texas Chicken to Singapore. Currently they have 2 outlets in Singapore Expo and United Square while the third is going to open in Changi Airport Terminal 1 transit soon.

Compare to the other fried chicken chains, the fried chicken at Texas Chicken was less oily. However I thought the chicken lacked the fragrance in their seasoning. The biscuit was nice. I preferred theirs to Popeye. Their biscuit was the hard type while Popeye's was soft inside. The coleslaw and mashed potatoes sides were norm while the mashed potatoes had a buttery taste.

Swensen's Restaurant @ City Square Mall

If you noticed, a lot of restaurants started to serve breakfast on their menu nowadays. Now you can find so called "angmo" or western breakfast easily in the morning. A good change from the usual Asian breakfast that we usually have at hawker centres or coffeeshops.

The breakfast set at Swensen came with a free coffee/tea and a fruit juice. Breakfast was nice except for the scrambled eggs which was on the dry side.

Ruyi @ Changi Airport Terminal 1

Changi Airport Terminal 1 welcomes another new eatery with its upgrading. It has brought Ruyi, Chinese fast food to the airport. Ruyi is opened by Tung Lok Group.

I had the staff meal which came with a main, soup and dessert. I chose the fried rice, seaweed egg flower chicken soup and lemongrass jelly with longan. Food was ordered, paid at the counter and served in plastic disposable containers.

Food was acceptable only. Fried rice was a bit hard and dry. The seaweed egg flower soup has ginger slices in it which I don't enjoy. Dessert was good and refreshing.

The Garden Slug @ Lorong L Telok Kurau

After hearing a fair bit about this eatery place, I took the opportunity to visit this place by suggesting to my colleague for her farewell dinner. It is not easy to locate this place as it is not on the main road. After you alight at the bus stop, you need to walk further down and turn into the side road Lorong L Telok Kurau to locate it. Once you see a lot of pet shops, you are at the right place.

We ordered the Wasuga Chicken Wing for appetizer. Initially I thought it was some Japanese marinated chicken wings. I only realized it meant "Wa Su Ga" (in dialect) meaning "I like" Chicken Wing after doing some research on their menu.

For soup, we had the Old Fashion Chicken Broth in a bowl. It was an interesting, light and refreshing soup boiled with melon, dried scallop and bits of rice.

For the main, we had Bangers & Mash and Meatball Melt to share. The sausage and mashed potatoes were nice. We enjoyed the additional texture of the mashed potatoes served with potato skins.

The Meatball Melt was Italian meatball (beef + pork) topped with marinara sauce and melted cheese. It was served in a big bowl and it can be quite messy to eat. One of us don't enjoy the taste of the meatball but I find it ok.

The overall experience was comfortable home cooked food. Don't expect high end restaurant standards here. One suggestion for the restaurant is to reduce the portion of their serving and thus reduce the price further. All of us find that the portion were really too big.

To get here, take bus 155 from Eunos MRT (along Sims Avenue not in the bus terminal). Alight at the 4th stop after Eunos MRT. Cross the street, turn left and walk towards Lorong L Telok Kurau.

Mazni's Family Ayam Penyet @ Changi Airport Terminal 1

This is probably one of the best ayam penyet in Singapore. The fried chicken skin was very crispy and fragrant. The must have is their sambal chilli. It was very good and many customers even asked for more. Besides ayam penyet, the stall is also very popular for their Malay snacks.

7th Storey Hainan Cafe @ IMM

The last time I tried 7th Storey was when it was located at the old Bugis premise. I understand it has now moved to Purvis Street and a new restaurant has also opened up at Marina Barrage. I was quite surprised to find 7th Storey at IMM so my friends and I decided to check it out.

It basically offers both steamboat and ala carte menu. We went for the traditional steamboat set $8.90 per person. There were also beef steamboat set at $9.90 and seafood steamboat set at $10.90. Instead of the charcoal style steamboat, it used mini gas style steamboat here. I enjoyed the broth which was light and refreshing. The chicken rice was very fragrant too.

Pizza Hut @ City Square Mall

Intended to introduce my friend to the new parchment pasta but it was a disappointment. It seemed like the parchment pasta was over baked and the pasta was dry with very little sauce. Some burnt marks could be seen on the parchment paper suggesting that it was over baked.

Fortunately the spicy chicken pomodoro and drumlets turned out fine. However it was not hot. Hopefully their standard can be more consistent in my next visit.

Melbourne Trip

I was away for the past one week in Melbourne for work. Located just opposite my apartment, there is a newly opened Nando's restaurant (was not there when I was in Melbourne  last year). Unlike the Nando's in Singapore, you need to order your meal from the counter. I was then given a waiting number and my food was served to me. Overall I felt that the chicken at Nando's Singapore tasted better.

Ramen Ten @ Harbourfront Centre

Ramen Ten claims to be the first Halal Japanese Restaurant chain on their website. It currently has 4 outlets in Singapore. I went to the Harbourfront Centre outlet and ordered the spicy miso crayfish dry ramen. I thought it was an unique dish as I have not tried dry ramen before. Unfortunately it was not spicy at all. The sauce turned out to be sweet instead of spicy. Food standard was acceptable only.
