Tip Top Curry Puff

IMG_7451ed

Many who stays in the Ang Mo Kio may know of the popular Tip Top Curry Puff brand which was originally founded by Mr Looi back in 1979. Since then there was no looking back for the business as it grown and become a popular brand in Singapore. From a humble stall in a coffeeshop in Ang Mo Kio, Tip Top has partnered with ABR Holdings Ltd and expanded their foot prints across the island. To date, Tip Top has 5 outlets in Singapore, including a cafe. It also has plan in 2015 to open more outlets.

Chicken Curry Puff 3.8/5

What made Tip Top popular is their Chicken Curry Puff ($1.40/pc) that comes with bites of curry potato, curry chicken meat and hard boiled egg. After tasting the chicken curry puff, what I enjoyed was the buttery and flaky crust, and the curry paste that consists of 18 different spices. On the down side, I was missing the solid bites of potato and chunky chicken meat. I was more like I was eating a paste mixture.

Nonya Beef Rendang Puff 3/5

In business, we need progression and it is the same for food to cater for the ever changing taste. Planning to create the next curry wave, Tip Top has introduced the new Nonya Beef Rendang Puff ($1.60/pc). Wrapped in the signature flaky and buttery crust, the beef is simmered in a mix of spices for long hours, resulting in a rich and intense flavours. I like the concept but I think it still needs a couple of fine tuning to get the balance right.

Besides the popular chicken curry puff and the new nonya beef rendang puff, Tip Top also offers the Sardine Curry Puff ($1.40/pc) that comes with caramelized onions and savoury sardines. Though I found the filling was on the salty side, the added heat from the chilli and chilli padi gave it a nice spicy kick.

Prosperity Yu Sheng with Norwegian Salmon and Abalone 4/5

A Chinese tradition for any reunion dinners is the Yu Sheng. Tossing to a great year ahead is the Prosperity Yu Sheng with Norwegian Salmon and Abalone. Giving it a more refreshing bite is the used of snow pear and adding a zest of passion fruit juice in the plum sauce dressing.

Trio of Appertisers 4/5

Next up is a Trio of Appetisers consisting of Crispy Roasted Chicken with Truffles, Crispy Prosperity Roll with Scallops, Banana and Salted Egg and Smoked Duck with Pineapple. I thought the platter presented an interesting combinations of flavours which probably has not been done elsewhere. At least I have not tried it elsewhere. Example, chicken and truffle, duck and pineapple combo. The crispy prosperity is another unique creation of scallops, banana and salted egg. The only confusion is how and which end of the roll to start eating.

Wok Fried Glutinous Rice with Wind Dried Sausages 4.5/5

A must try will be the Wok Fried Glutinous Rice with Wind Dried Sausages. It may look simple but this plate of glutinous is so fragrant and flavourful. The fragrant rice plus the wok fried aroma and the extra crisp on the grains, coupled with the wind dried sausages was just pure delicious. If not that I am cutting down on my carbo intakes, I would gladly have 2 bowls of it.

Avocado Sago Cream with Ice Cream, Crispy Glutinous Rice Cake 3.5/5

Wrapping up the lavish dinner is the Avocado Sago Cream with Ice Cream and Crispy Glutinous Rice Cake. Mango sago is probably more commonly served in Chinese restaurants. Hence the avocado sago cream is a good chance from the norm. Glutinous rice cake or Nian Gao is commonly eaten during Chinese New Year symbolising raising oneself higher in each coming year (年年高升).
