Hai Kee Teochew Cha Kuay Teow (Queenstown) @ Telok Blangah Crescent Market & Food Centre

Due to new development at Queenstown with the closing of the former Margaret Drive Hawker Centre or more commonly known as Queenstown Hawker Centre on 01 March 2011, many hawker stalls have relocated with some even ceased their business. There were many good food at the former Margaret Drive hawker center and one of my favourite is Hai Kee Teochew Cha Kuay Teow. After doing some research online, I got to know that the stall has moved to Telok Blangah Crescent Market & Food Centre. So with my camera and empty stomach, I headed down to Telok Blangah on a lost and found food journey.

Many memories came back to me when I dig in to the delicious plate of Char Kway Teow ($3). I remembered the uncle used to run the stall alone but now he has a helper helping him. If I am not wrong, the uncle should be 65 years old this year. It is still good to see him going strong and frying each plate individually.

The plate of char kway teow is neither too wet or dry, for my standard it is rather perfect. If you are a fan of cockles, you will love Hai Kee's char kway teow. It comes with a lot of cockles. Although the plate of char kway teow does not come with a lot of ingredients such as fish cakes and chinese sausages, I like how the eggs are still a bit runny coating the noodles.

Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa @ Hong Lim Market & Food Centre

IMG_1156ed

When I was asked to check out this stall at Hong Lim Market & Food Centre that sells Fruit Juice Mee Siam, I did not hesitate as I am a junkie for unique and good hawker food. Furthermore, Hong Lim Market & Food Centre housed a lot of good hawker food and I can take the opportunity to also explore the good food there. Not knowing what to expect, I made my way down to Hong Lim Market & Food Centre on a Saturday afternoon to join a group of foodies invited by OpenRice to check out this unique Mee Siam dish.

The stall Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa is located on the second floor of Hong Lim Market & Food Centre. There are quite a few Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa stalls around the island which I think are franchised. The original stall is at Jalan Besar and it is still using charcoal to cook its laksa broth. The owner of this stall, Mr Daniel Soo has been running this stall for the past 12 years and invented the special Fruit Juice Mee Siam.

The one dish meal Fruit Juice Mee Siam are priced at $3, $4 and $6. The $6 serving comes with crayfish. In my bowl of mee siam, there were luxurious servicing of crayfish, chicken, prawn and eggs. I was totally blown off by the stall's interpretation of the spicy, sweet and sour mee siam gravy. The gravy comes with a lighter colour, smoother texture and it is less oily compared to the Malay and Nonya versions. In short it seems like a more healthy version but not compromising in taste. In fact better than the traditional mee siam.

Before leaving, I tried my luck to check with the uncle what fruits were added to gravy but he refuses to tell me the ingredients. He only tells me a lot of work is needed to prepare the gravy and it needs to be boiled by a good 2 hours. I suspect pineapple and lime were added. If you have the chance to visit the food centre, do check out their fruit juice mee siam. It is really good.
