ANJU @ Tras Street - Modern Korean Dining with Creative Flair

Anju16

ANJU is a modern Korean dining and bar restaurant tucked along Tras Street in Tanjong Pagar. Taking its name from the Korean term for dishes enjoyed with alcohol, ANJU focuses on elevating traditional flavours while pairing its creative cuisine with a curated selection of Korean spirits and liquors. The restaurant delivers a refined take on Korean classics in a contemporary and elegant setting.

Anju2
Buckwheat Crepe 4/5

We started with the Buckwheat Crepe ($16), a dish that immediately set the tone for the evening. The crepe had a gelatinous, bouncy bite, wrapping around pickled radish, egg, mushroom, and prawn, with Dijon mustard to tie it all together. A refreshing, eye-opening start.

Anju5
Black Bean Mascarpone 4/5

The Black Bean Mascarpone ($16) was another creative snack, served with sourdough crackers. The mascarpone was addictively creamy with a balance of sweet and savoury notes.

Anju8
Bangeo 4.2/5

The Bangeo ($26), featuring yellowtail ceviche paired with carrot kimchi and Earl Grey dongchimi, stood out for its lightness and refreshing zesty flavours.

Anju12
Hogam Jeon 4.5/5

A highlight was the Hogam Jeon ($26), a signature dish comprising potato, zucchini, prawn, and onion pickle. Crispy on the outside with layers of textures inside, it was immensely satisfying. The optional addition of mozzarella (+$3) elevated the dish even further.

Anju20
Yangnyeom Cauliflower 4/5

The Yangnyeom Cauliflower ($22) was a surprise. It looked like Korean fried chicken at first glance, but the crunchy cauliflower tossed in a sweet-spicy gochujang sauce (with chewy rice cakes for added texture) was just as addictive.

Anju21
Dwaeji Deungsim 4.2/5

The Dwaeji Deungsim ($36) showcased tender, succulent Iberico pork grilled to perfection. Pairing it with barley ssamjang accentuated the flavour, while pickled radish refreshed the palate.

Anju29
Spicy Dak Galbi 4.5/5

The Spicy Dak Galbi ($36) was another winner. Oven-baked, tender, and rich with flavour, the addictive marinade was complemented by cashew nuts and spring onions for texture and balance.

Anju38
LA Galbi 4/5

We also tried the off-menu LA Galbi. The beef short ribs, cut across the bone, were marinated in a sweet sauce and grilled to a charred finish. Tender, juicy, and served with housemade green chilli sauce, it made for a harmonious bite.

Anju33
Ssambob 3/5

Anju25
Baek Kimchi 4/5

As accompaniments, the Ssambob ($10), barley rice rolls wrapped in savoy cabbage was a refreshing alternative to plain rice, though not particularly memorable. The Baek Kimchi ($7), a white kimchi with radish and red dates, was a bright palate cleanser that balanced the richness of the mains.

Anju43
Korean Donut 4/5

Desserts at Anju were inventive and memorable. The Korean Donut ($18), made with sweet rice dough, had a chewy texture complemented by Parmesan tuile, cinnamon milk ice cream, sea salt meringue, and candied walnut. It was a light yet satisfying finish.

Anju49
Sweet Potato 4.5/5

The Sweet Potato 2.0 ($18) was a standout. A reinterpretation of sweet potato crème brûlée (though more puree-like in texture), it was layered with caramelised sugar, sweet potato ice cream, brown butter crumble, chips, and a dusting of coffee powder. It was complex yet comforting.

Anju53
Makgeolli Pannacotta 4.2/5

The Makgeolli Pannacotta ($18) was another creative dessert. The makgeolli jelly carried the fragrance of rice, enhanced by fresh melon and strawberry, condensed milk, and playful popping candy, for a sweet and refreshing ending.

ANJU is not your typical Korean restaurant. With its thoughtful pairings, modern reinterpretations, and polished presentation, it elevates Korean dining to something exciting and refreshing. While prices are on the higher side, the creativity and execution justify the splurge. Whether you’re here for a date night or a gathering with friends over soju and modern bites, ANJU delivers a memorable dining experience that stands out in Singapore’s Korean food scene.

Big Wine Freaks @ Bukit Pasoh Road - Champagne and Wine Restaurant with Ingredient-forward Cuisine

IMG_4050

Big Wine Freaks at Bukit Pasoh is a Champagne and wine restaurant with an outstanding wine selection that showcases labels from a new generation of star producers, natural wines from renowned French regions, and rare picks from unique micro-farms. Channelling the same electric energy as their Moscow origins, the space is brought to life by Sabrina Bignami and Alessandro Capellaro of B-Arch Architectural Bureau in Florence. It's an expressive blend of light, colour, and texture, a setting that speaks about the experience that they want to offer. Their ingredient-forward menu features a raw seafood bar, bite-sized starters, vegetables, and mains cooked over an open-fire grill.

IMG_4006
Oysters 3.5/5

Daily from 5.30pm to 7pm is the time for Aperitivo ($58), which I believe is the best way to soak in the atmosphere of Big Wine Freaks. We were served a Cichetti Assortment comprising Oysters, Trout Gravlax, Parma Ham, Arancini, and Padron Peppers.

IMG_4010
Parma Ham 4/5

IMG_4031
Trout Gravlax 5/5

There was plenty to love about this assortment. It offered a satisfying balance of cold and hot starters and, more importantly, the rich mouthfeel and savouriness that pair beautifully with their wines and Champagne. Both the Parma Ham and Trout Gravlax stood out for their indulgent textures, especially the latter, with its tangy and mustardy toast and delicate ribbons of gravlax that paired perfectly with the glass of Gounel-Lassalle Esprit Voyager we had.

IMG_4022
Padron Peppers 4.5/5

IMG_4048
Arancini 4.5/5

The Arancini were well executed too. Encased in a crisp golden crust was a molten mixture of rice, mozzarella, and Jamon, made even more indulgent with the accompanying aioli. Rounding off the plate, the blistered Padron Peppers were juicy and vibrant, adding a fresh green bite that nicely balanced the lineup.

IMG_4078
Octopus 3/5

The mains feature selections from the Josper Basque Grill. The Octopus ($58) was incredibly well cooked, with a texture and flavour that stood out as one of the better renditions I've had. Unfortunately, the dish was slightly let down by an oversprinkle of finishing salt.

IMG_4091
Beef Short Rib 3/5

For the Beef Short Rib ($46), while the meat wasn't as tender as hoped, it made up for it with flavour. The caramelised, charred exterior imparted a depth and smokiness that was deeply satisfying.

IMG_4109
Donut 4.5/5

Dessert was a pure joy. The fluffy Donuts, filled with berry jam and custard, were a delightful way to end the meal. While I would have preferred the custard to be a touch lighter, the overall experience was still indulgent and comforting.

IMG_3990

There's also a noticeable attention to detail when it comes to presentation. Each dish is served on dinnerware by Ginori 1735, the renowned Florentine porcelain house now under the creative direction of Alessandro Michele. The wine-by-the-glass list is equally thoughtful, featuring over 40 rotating options that highlight fresh finds from their cellar. Every glass is served in exceptional stemware, featuring brands such as Zalto from Austria, Sydonios from France, and Kimura from Japan, which further elevates the overall experience.

Surrey Hills Grocer @ Vivocity - Largest Surrey Hills Outlet, Bringing Diners the Aussie Rainforest Experience

IMG_6334

Surrey Hills Grocer has unveiled its largest branch on VivoCity's rooftop, offering diners an Aussie rainforest-themed experience. The cosy space is adorned with lush greenery and playful animal decor like kangaroos, koalas, and giraffes.

IMG_6274

Like its other branches, this new outlet introduces outlet-exclusive dishes and their first ever full kids menu.

IMG_6290

Pet owners will also be happy to know that the outlet is pet-friendly and offers an all-new pet-friendly menu. Their freshly made treats are all crafted with quality, human-grade ingredients.

IMG_6286

Diners can find a great variety of produce and food items to be purchased. The retail space is in a dedicated store segment near the entrance.

IMG_6295
Surrey’s Homemade Iced Lemon Tea

Surrey has an extensive beverage list, which includes alcohols, fresh juices, wines, smoothies, teas and homemade options, such as the mildly sweet Surrey's Homemade Iced Lemon Tea ($8). It is made in-house using cold-brewed premium black tea dust and fresh lemons.

IMG_6293
Corn & Crab Chowder 4/5

For a comforting start, we opted for the Corn & Crab Chowder ($14), a mildly creamy soup peppered with sweet crab meat bits and served with a side of focaccia.

IMG_6315
Pumpkin Soup 4/5

Equally satisfying was the Pumpkin Soup ($12), which featured warm flavours of burnt orange and dukkah, balanced by a refreshing touch of mint, accompanied by focaccia.

IMG_6341

IMG_6356
Tender Seared Turkey 4.8/5

To add to the festive cheer, Surrey Hills Grocer has rolled out a seasonal Christmas menu available till the end of December. I was especially excited to try their Tender Seared Turkey ($32), which was strongly recommended by the staff. It was stellar and indeed one of the most tender renditions I've had of the meat. The turkey breast is drizzled with fragrant truffle butter and served with a bed of creamy truffled pomme puree, sherry caramel, miso glaze butternut squash and mushroom gravy.

IMG_6329

IMG_6364
Christmas Porchetta 4.5/5

Another festive highlight was the Christmas Porchetta ($28), which features tender Spanish chestnut pork belly with perfectly crisped skin stuffed with aromatics and sweet yet tangy apple cider glaze and cranberry apple compote.

IMG_6323
Octopus Salad 3.8/5

Unfortunately, the Octopus Salad ($28) was less memorable, primarily due to its texture, which was a little too chewy. The sides of edamame, grape salsa and whipped cod roe went well together.

IMG_6370
Flat Bread Hammy Benny 4/5

From the standard menu, we had the Flat Bread Hammy Benny ($26), featuring smoked Kurobuta ham, eggs of your choice, wilted spinach, truffle mushroom ragout, and foam-textured hollandaise on warmed flatbread. While enjoyable, my companions found it slightly overpriced for its simplicity.

IMG_6304

IMG_6311
Hot Honey Pepperoni Pizza 4.2/5

A standout speciality exclusive to this outlet is its Sicilian-style pizzas and pasta. The Hot Honey Pepperoni Pizza ($12) was a crowd-pleaser, featuring creamy ricotta, spicy pepperoni, Parmigiano Reggiano, and a drizzle of hot honey for a sweet-spicy kick.

IMG_6318

IMG_6334
“Hokkien Mee” 4.8/5

Among the pasta options, the "Hokkien Mee" ($26) impressed us with its creative local twist. Al dente malfadine pasta was bathed in a rich prawn bisque with lard and topped with ikura, grilled prawns, and spicy shrimp sambal. It was a bold, crustacean-infused dish.

IMG_6344

IMG_6352
Roasted Garlic Miso Butter Pasta 4/5

By contrast, the Roasted Garlic Miso Butter Pasta ($22) felt slightly underwhelming. The casarecce pasta, paired with pork sausage, asparagus, and fresh herbs, was well-cooked but lacked the robust flavours of the other dishes.

IMG_6371
Strawberries Donut with Vanilla Custard, Vanilla Glazed Donut 3/5

We sampled two donuts for dessert: the Strawberries Donut with Vanilla Custard ($6.50) and the Vanilla Glazed Donut ($5). Both were dense and much sweeter than expected. We favoured the latter for its delicate sugar coating.

IMG_6382
Sticky Date Pudding 4.5/5

Finally, the Sticky Date Pudding ($16) stole the show. This moist sponge cake was paired with sea salt butterscotch, almond crumble, and vanilla ice cream. The sweetness was balanced with a contrasting touch of saltiness.

Odem @ New Bahru - Modern Korean Restaurant and Craft Makkoli Bar

Odem26

In New Bahru, Singapore's latest trendy lifestyle and dining destination, Odem is a modern Korean restaurant and craft makkoli bar. Nestled in the corner of this vibrant development, Odem brings a fresh take on Korean cuisine with a contemporary twist. During my visit, I had the chance to sample several standout dishes.

Odem2
Brioche & Gamtae Seaweed Butter 4/5

We began our meal with the Brioche & Gamtae Seaweed Butter ($20). With its soy glaze, the brioche was soft, buttery, and delightful. The highlight, however, was the Gamtae seaweed butter, which paired perfectly with the warm brioche, enhancing its flavours and adding a hint of umami. It's a simple dish but incredibly satisfying.

Odem10
Banchan Platter 3/5

Odem17

Next, we tried the Banchan Platter ($24), which consisted of Granochi (an Anchovy Granola bar with anchovies, nuts, and seeds), Dubu mousse, kimchi, Spinach & Tott, Cucumber Kimchi, and Gim Chips. The Granochi was my personal favourite, offering a nice crunchy texture, while the cucumber kimchi was refreshing. However, considering most Korean restaurants serve banchan for free, I don't know if I would justify paying for this platter.

Odem7
Makkoli Flights

Odem distinguishes itself from typical Korean restaurants by offering an impressive array of handcrafted makkoli sourced from across South Korea. They've curated two tasting flights for those unfamiliar with makkoli: Odem Quintet ($60) and Moonshots ($88). For those eager to explore, this is a fun way to delve into the world of makkoli, with a range of flavours and profiles that complement the modern Korean fare.

Odem21

Odem24
Savoury Donut 4.2/5

The Savoury Donut ($15) was a pleasant surprise. Fluffy and dusted with smoked gochugaru, the donut had a delicate sweetness that balanced perfectly with the savoury filling. Bite into it, and you'll find a delicious combination of shio kelp, salmon roe, and creme fraiche, making it a unique burst of flavours. A definite must-try!

Odem29
Toro Kimbap 4.8/5

One of my favourite dishes of the night was the Toro Kimbap ($55). The generous portions of chutoro and akami were luxurious, wrapped with perilla, pickled radish, kelp-soy, and sesame. The balance of fish to rice ratio was perfect, and the freshness of the fish elevated this dish. It's a luxurious spin on the classic kimbap and absolutely worth the splurge.

Odem37
Barbecued Kalbi 5/5

The star of the night was undoubtedly the Barbecued Kalbi ($78). These US boneless beef ribs were marinated to perfection, boasting a sweet glaze that beautifully complemented the charred exterior with tender, juicy ribs that melted in the mouth. This dish was a showstopper, served with a side of watercress salad dressed in tokki butter sauce. If you only try one dish here, make sure it's this one.

Odem39

Odem44
Chapssal Donut, Pine Nut Gelato (3pc) 3.5/5

We ended the meal with the Chapssal Donut with Pine Nut Gelato ($18 for 3 pieces). The donuts, filled with red bean paste, offered a nice twist from the usual dessert offerings. While the donuts were good, I actually enjoyed the Pine Nut Gelato more. It was light and refreshing, making for a lovely palate cleanser after the richer dishes. I wouldn't mind having just the gelato to wrap up the meal.

Odem42

Odem offers a refreshing take on modern Korean cuisine with unique twists and luxurious ingredients. The ambiance, paired with their expertly crafted dishes, makes it an exciting dining spot to explore. While some items might seem a little pricey (especially considering banchan is usually complimentary), the quality of the food and the innovative takes make it worth a visit. If you're looking to indulge in something new, be sure to try the Toro Kimbap and Barbecued Kalbi!
