No Name Cheng Tng @ Bedok South Ave 3

IMG_0652ed

I guess if I would to ask most people where to get the best Cheng Tng, many would have recommended me Ye Lai Xiang at Bedok Corner Food Centre. However my foodie kakis brought me to No Name Cheng Tng stall instead. This little stall is hidden inside the coffeeshop at block 69 Bedok South Ave 3. I was told that it used to be at the front but has now moved inside.

Cheng Tng 4.5/5

The first impression of the Cheng Tng ($1.50) with its generous ingredients already won me at first sight. In the bowl there was dried longan, white fungus, gingko nuts, dried persimmon, winter melon, glutinous ball, malva nut and sweet potato. Unlike most Cheng Tng, the uncle prefers to use ice cube instead of shaved ice. I like the idea as it keeps the cheng tng cold while not over dilute the broth when the ice melted.

A sip of the cooling broth and one will be able to taste the sweetness of the longan and know it is genuine, not like some stalls that took shortcut and uses syrup.

I have not tried Ye Lai Xiang's Cheng Tng but accordingly to the foodie kakis, the Cheng Tng here is comparable if not even better. Furthermore, it is only $1.50 which is like fifty percent cheaper compared to Ye Lai Xiang. Anytime I would be happy to have 2 bowls of it. The stall may be called no name but it is already making a name for itself when it is invited and took part in the World Street Food Congress Singapore 2013.

Yam in a Husk 4/5

Yam paste or Orh Nee which is a Teochew dessert that is usually eaten during wedding dinner. The Yam in a Husk ($4.20) is a rendition of this traditional dessert. The smooth yam paste and ginko nuts were steamed and served in a young coconut husk lending an extra aroma and richness to it. If you like, you can also eat the coconut flesh.

The youth should enjoy this dessert with the popular influence of Taiwan dessert of taro balls. The Taro Balls with Red Beans ($3.50) consists of tasty and chewy and bite sized honey taro balls, red beans and grass jelly was an delightful treat for a hot day.

All Things Mango 3/5

All Things Mango ($4.20) comprises of shaved ice, fresh mango cubes, pure mango puree, red and green beans, attap chee palm fruits, jelly cubes and pomelo. Unfortunately this interpretation was short of my expectation, it was more like an ice kachang dessert instead of a mango feast.

Mohamed Sultan Road Hot & Cold Cheng Tng @ Zion Riverside Food Centre

IMG_8070ed

Mohamed Sultan Road Hot & Cold Cheng Tng stall at Zion Riverside Food Centre does not have the most delicious Cheng Tng but definitely one of those "dare to be different" Cheng Tng stalls I have visited. The stall does not have a lot of varieties. It sells only Cheng Tng Hot/Cold, Ginko Nut Longan Soup, Sweet Potato Soup, Ginko Nut Soup and Ginko Nut Sweet Potato Soup.

Cheng Tng Cold 3/5

The Cheng Tng Cold ($2) here comes in a clear sweet syrup soup instead of the normal brown longan soup. The hot version still comes with the brown longan soup. The cold cheng tng has ginko nuts, bouncy sago, canned longan and lychee. Yes canned longan and lychee for cheng tng, so something diffeerent isn't it? While I applauded the cool and refreshing cheng tng with the fruits for the Singapore humid weather, I am disappointed with the soup. I still prefer my brown longan soup thats why I ordered cheng tng and not a bowl of sweet lychee or longan syrup soup.
