Asador Singapore @ Joo Chiat Road - Wood-Fried Spanish Flavours in the Neighbourhood

Asador30

Tucked away in the heritage-rich enclave of Joo Chiat, Asador Singapore brings the soulful flavours of Basque-style cooking to the East with its wood-fired Spanish grill concept. Set in a cosy yet refined semi-casual setting, the restaurant’s warm neighbourhood vibe, attentive service, and authentic Spanish fare make it a gem perfect for both date nights and friendly gatherings.

Asador1
Jamon Iberico 4.2/5

We started our evening with a serving of Jamon Ibérico, carved tableside from a 100% acorn-fed whole ham leg. The thin slivers of ham were served with pan de cristal and grated tomato, offering a delightful balance of savoury richness and freshness. The quality and ritual of hand-carving echoed fond memories of Spain, bringing a slice of its culinary tradition to our table.

Asador6
Anchoas 4/5

Next, we had the Anchoas, featuring premium "00" anchovies from Santoña laid delicately atop toast. These prized fillets, which are thick, meaty, and packed with umami, strike a delicate balance between saltiness and subtle sweetness. Best enjoyed on toast to temper the intensity, this dish was both simple and luxurious.

Asador11
Tomate 4.2/5

The Tomate dish showcased a beautiful medley of grilled tomatoes, dressed in dry-aged beef fat, and accompanied by a pool of ajo blanco —a creamy, cold soup often described as a white gazpacho. The sweetness of the tomatoes harmonised with the richness of the dressing and the refreshing ajo blanco, creating an elegant and well-balanced plate.

Asador17
Col 4.5/5

A standout vegetable dish came in the form of Col, featuring grilled Hispi cabbage with anchovy-garlic dressing and topped with fried kale. The cabbage's natural sweetness, accentuated by charring, was elevated by the umami-laden dressing. The crispy kale added a delightful textural contrast, making this a dish greater than the sum of its parts.

Asador24
Chipirones 4.2/5

The Chipirones, or baby squid, were charcoal-grilled and stuffed with chorizo, then served atop a vibrant mojo verde. Perfectly grilled to a bouncy tenderness, the squid was smoky and juicy, while the chorizo stuffing delivered a spicy, savoury punch. The garlicky green sauce added a fresh and herbaceous finish.

Asador32
Sereto Iberico 4.5/5

From the wood-fired grill came the Secreto Ibérico, a prized cut of pork shoulder known for its marbling and tenderness. Grilled to perfection and paired with mojo picón, a bold, smoky red pepper sauce, the meat was exceptionally juicy. It was so tender it could be mistaken for beef. It was a clear highlight of the night.

Asador33
Tarta de Queso 'La Vina' 4.2/5

To end on a sweet note, we indulged in the Tarta de Queso 'La Viña', a tribute to the iconic Basque burnt cheesecake. With its caramelised top and creamy, almost molten centre, the dessert was indulgent without being heavy. It was a perfect finale to the meal.

IMG_6141

IMG_6128

IMG_6132

IMG_6107

Returning fans can look forward to a revamped menu of artisanal drinks and desserts. To celebrate, there's a 1-for-1 promo on their new hot flavoured lattes on 9 and 10 June, limited to the first 50 guests daily. Iced versions, extra toppings, and milk alternatives are available at additional cost.

IMG_6074

Adding to the experience is Hvala's latest team member - Bob, a robotic arm dedicated to supporting whisking matcha.

IMG_6080

The lineup of new handcrafted beverages is extensive, including both Flavoured Tea Lattes and Brewed Tea Lattes. Highlights include the Bluepea Matcha Latte, Floral Matcha Sakura Latte, and Pine Smoked Black Tea.

IMG_6103
Matcha Kinako 4.5/5

We started with the Matcha Kinako ($7.80 hot, $8.80 iced), which impressed us with its nutty and earthy balance. It is a surprisingly harmonious blend.

IMG_6089
Strawberry Matcha 4.2/5

Next was the Strawberry Matcha ($7.80 hot, $8.80 iced), which we had heard good things about even before our visit. This version stood out for its natural strawberry chunks and well-balanced flavour, though a tad sweet at the end. We'd gladly order it again with less sugar.

IMG_6168

IMG_6178
Matcha Mochi Harmony 3.5/5

A recent social media darling is the Matcha Mochi Harmony ($9.90). It combines a base of "liquid mochi" with kuromitsu and honey mochi cubes, Hvala's signature M1 matcha gelato and a fresh Tsuki matcha shot.

IMG_6182

Texture-wise, the mochi cubes were more like slightly harder jellies, while the 'liquid mochi' was the oozy sort. While creative, the components didn't quite gel, and we found it overly sweet. If you're looking for a vegan option, inform the friendly servers, and they will swap the honey mochi cubes for the kuromitsu ones.

IMG_6142
Matcha Petit 3.8/5

The Matcha Petit ($10.90) layered chantilly, nama chocolate, mousse, sponge, and pistachio feuilletine. We wished there was more of a crunch for that textural contrast and for the pistachio notes to come out stronger.

IMG_6118
Matcha Hojicha Tart 4.2/5

Our favourite of the day, the Matcha Hojicha Tart ($10.90), featured a crisp shell filled with intense matcha-hojicha ganache and chewy mochi pieces. The mochi here was a much better fit, and its textures and sweetness were on point.

IMG_6146
Hojicha Choux Puff 3.8/5

The Hojicha Choux Puff ($7.50) came with a hojicha mascarpone filling and a tea-infused shell. Though the filling was slightly lighter than expected, it was still enjoyable.

IMG_6114
Shiro Matcha Yuzu Basque Cheesecake 4/5

We concluded with the Shiro Matcha Yuzu Basque Cheesecake ($10.90), which featured a rich matcha base accented by a zesty yuzu flavour. While I'd prefer a smoother texture to the cheesecake, it was a satisfying piece that was best for sharing.

Momolato @ North Bridge Road - New Halal Dessert Cafe with Gelato, Kunafa Waffle and Savoury Options

IMG_7864

Momolato, a halal-certified dessert cafe, has opened its second outlet on North Bridge Road following the success of its first location in Haji Lane. The cafe now offers an expanded menu featuring plated desserts, savoury options, and signature gelato.

IMG_7938

The cosy 20-seater has a warm atmosphere and is adorably decorated.

IMG_7871
Gelato 3.8/5

Diners will be spoilt for choice at their 24 rotating Gelato flavours display. Scoops start at $5.30, with premium selections available for an additional $1. Unique flavours such as Popcorn Butterscotch and Hibiscus Apple offer intriguing options, although all that we sampled leaned toward the sweeter side.

IMG_7902

IMG_7918
Warabi Mochi Coffee 3.5/5

From the beverage menu, the Warabi Mochi Coffee caught our eye. The Emerald Beast ($8.50) combines roasted Sicilian pistachio, pistachio milk, espresso, and warabi mochi, while the Shady & Nut ($7.90) features chocolate hazelnut milk, hazelnut bits, espresso, and warabi mochi. All warabi mochi used are homemade.

IMG_7907

IMG_7916
Sicilian Pistachio Kunafa 4.2/5

A highlight is the newly launched Sicilian Pistachio Kunafa ($21), a plated dessert that pairs a buttermilk waffle with crisp ricotta-mozzarella kuna fa, Sicilian pistachio cream, caramelised banana, torched fig, and pistachio gelato, offering delightful textural contrasts.

IMG_7876

IMG_7881
Fried Buttermilk Garlic Chicken Waffle 3.8/5

The savoury Fried Buttermilk Garlic Chicken Waffle ($16.90) features buttermilk chicken with truffle cheese sauce and maple honey, though the sauce could benefit from a thicker consistency.

IMG_7882
Cheddar Cheese Coin 3/5

It was a pity that our Cheddar Cheese Coin ($6.50) seemed to have less cheese added, which led to the lack of an oozy cheese stretch we were hoping for. Otherwise, the batter itself was buttery and fragrant.

IMG_7890

IMG_7900
Yellow Fever 3.8/5

The Yellow Fever ($16) blends mango pudding, coconut cream, and mangoes in syrup, topped with coconut gelato, reminiscent of tropical desserts like mango sticky rice and mango sago.

IMG_7924
Korean Strawberry Cheesecake 3/5

Fans of mochi can look out for their mochi-centred desserts, such as the Korean Strawberry Cheesecake ($12). It has deep-fried mochi wrapped around Korean strawberry cheesecake gelato and drizzled with strawberry sauce. While the chewy mochi was enjoyable, the drizzle felt overly sweet and slightly artificial. We would also have liked the cheesecake flavour to be more distinct.

IMG_7930
Not Plain Jane 3.8/5

Finally, the Not Plain Jane ($12). This thin crepe is filled with fresh vanilla cream and topped with strawberries and French vanilla bean gelato. The sweetness here was well-balanced.

BarossaAug24-21

Barossa Steak & Grill at Vivocity has launched an all-new menu showcasing char-grilled meats, fresh seafood platters, and delightful sides, making it a destination for meat lovers and seafood enthusiasts. With its waterfront location and live music every Thursday to Saturday from 7.30 pm, the restaurant offers a relaxing seaside dining experience that's perfect for unwinding with family and friends.

BarossaSeafood-4
Cold Seafood Platter 4/5

BarossaAug24-9

To kick off our meal, we indulged in the Cold Seafood Platter ($88), a seafood lover's dream that serves 3-4 people. This generous platter comes with half a dozen oysters, chilled tiger prawns, Chardonnay wine Yumbah mussels, and fresh scallops. It's accompanied by an array of dipping sauces, including cocktail sauce, mignonette, seaweed granita, sauce vierge, and fresh lemon — allowing you to customise each bite to your liking.

BarossaAug24-7

BarossaAug24-12

The plump and briny oysters were my favourite, while the prawns were sweet and firm. Each seafood item was fresh and chilled, making it a great dish to enjoy as a starter or as a lighter option on a warm day by the sea.

BarossaAug24-14
Seafood Bouillabaisse 4/5

For something a little heartier, we tried the Seafood Bouillabaisse ($58), another new addition that serves 2-3 people. This dish is packed with a medley of seafood, including Humpty Doo Barramundi, Yumbah Mussels, Char Baby Squid, and Tiger Prawns. The seafood is nestled in a rich broth along with Potato Fondant and Char Fennel, creating a dish with both depth of flavour and texture. The broth was flavourful, and each bite of seafood was cooked to the right doneness, making this dish perfect for sharing.

BarossaAug24-24
Buffalo Cauliflower 3.5/5

For something on the lighter side, we also sampled the Buffalo Cauliflower ($14), a char-grilled, crunchy cauliflower dish dressed in a tangy, spicy sauce and finished with ranch dressing. The pickled onions added a sweet contrast to the fiery cauliflower, resulting in an explosion of satisfying and guilt-free flavours. It's a great vegetarian option that delivers a punch of bold flavours.

BarossaAug24-26
Barossa Mac & Cheese 4/5

No steakhouse experience is complete without a good Mac & Cheese ($14), and Barossa's version didn't disappoint. Creamy, cheesy, and baked to a delightful golden-brown crust, the Barossa Mac & Cheese offered a comforting side dish that paired wonderfully with the chargrilled meats. It's the kind of dish that brings a sense of indulgence to the table, elevating the meal with its richness.

BarossaAug24-23
Trio Cuts of Australia Grass-Fed Beef 3.8/5

For meat lovers, the highlight of the meal was the Trio Cuts of Australia Grass-Fed Beef ($105). This platter, perfect for 3-4 people, features three different cuts: Ribeye (250g), Striploin (220g), and Tenderloin (200g). Each cut had its own unique texture and flavour profile, allowing diners to enjoy a variety of beef experiences in one sitting. The tenderloin was especially succulent and tender, while the ribeye offered more marbling and a richer flavour. It's a great sharing platter showcasing the best Australian grass-fed beef.

BarossaAug24-38
Aburi Brulee Cheesecake 4/5

We wrapped up our meal on a sweet note with the Aburi Brulee Cheesecake ($18). This dessert is a delightful fusion of rich cheesecake topped with a brulee layer, offering a satisfying caramelised crunch. The dish is beautifully garnished with summer berries, raspberry gel, and butter cookies, adding both a fresh and buttery contrast to the creamy cheesecake. It’s the perfect dessert for those who love a sweet, creamy treat with a bit of texture.

BarossaExterior-2

Barossa Steak & Grill’s new menu offers something for everyone—whether you’re in the mood for fresh, chilled seafood or hearty, chargrilled meats. The Cold Seafood Platter and Trio Cuts of Australia Grass-Fed Beef are definite highlights for sharing, while sides like the Buffalo Cauliflower and Mac & Cheese bring depth to the overall dining experience. Paired with the restaurant’s breezy waterfront views and live music, Barossa Steak & Grill is an ideal spot for an unforgettable seaside dining experience at Vivocity.
