Subrosa Private Dining @ Jalan Besar - Exclusive Farm-To-Table Fine Dining Experience Without An Ostentatious Price Tag

Subrosa14

With home private dining getting popular in Singapore, a new private dining restaurant concept has sprung in the F&B scene. One such new establishment is Subrosa Private Dining at Jalan Besar. The private dining restaurant is helmed by both Executive Chef Steven Snowdon from London and Consulting Chef Francis Lee from Singapore, offering an amalgamation of East and West. A 7-course menu is priced at $128 for lunch and $168 for dinner.

Subrosa2
Artisan Bread Selection

Our 7-course dinner started with a selection of homemade Artisan Bread. However I was drawn to the homemade Truffle Butter that was arousing my senses while waiting for the bread to be served. I have to refrain myself from picking up another piece of the bread to finish up the truffle butter.

Subrosa8
Fresh is Best 3.8/5

Next we moved to a cold starter, Fresh is Best. The fresh and sweet scallop is paired with fermented melon, cucumber, dill, lemon and smoked trout roe. I applauded the chefs effort in making his own pickled and fermented fruits and vegetables. It did give the dish a vibrant taste. However I thought there was a bit too much flavours at work masking the natural sweetness of the scallop.

Subrosa10
The Cocktail 4/5

We were in luck as the crabs were just delivered the morning of our visit. The Cocktail comes with crabmeat that has been painstakingly removed from its shell. It is presented in a glass with aerated shrimp. The richness of the aerate shrimp tastes almost like crab roe. The bloody mary tomato is a lovely touch to cut through the richness.

Subrosa16
Quaking Cod That 4/5

The Quaking Cod That is another dish on the menu that showcases the influences of both East and West. The fat and buttery cod fish is wrapped in a layer of nori and topped with ginger and shimeji. This is served together with an aromatic duck consomme. An interesting combination that replicate the Asian steamed fish.

Subrosa18
Palate Cleanser 4.2/5

Before moving on to our next course, we are served the palate cleanser which is Lychee Sorbet with morello cherry granita, chocolate mint and preserved mandarin orange. It is a well received break to refresh the palate after all the rich flavoured dishes.

Subrosa19
Oh 'Dang! 4.8/5

After travelling around the world , we are back home with Oh 'Dang!, a local rendang dish consists of ox cheek, carrot puree, purr and topped with coconut flakes. The fork tender ox cheek took me by surprises with its texture and robust rempah. I didn't expect the restaurant to be serving me such a well executed local dish.

Subrosa24
Remember Mee 3/5

The other locally inspired dish is the Remember Mee or Hokkien Mee a luxurious take using the  lobster with yellow noodle and bee hoon. I don't quite get the idea when the broth is pour into the plate at table side. It fell short of my expectation as the noodles didn't get to absorb the robustness of the broth. The pro is it comes with pork lard.

Subrosa27
Tropical Passion 4.5/5

Wrapping our 7-course dinner is the Tropical Passion. When I first read the menu, I thought I will be served a plate of fruits with the description just mentioning the dish consists of coconut, mango, lime and passionfruit. It was a pleasant surprise with the exquisite presentation.

Subrosa6

You probably has the same doubt as me what makes Subrosa different from other restaurants? Apparently you can’t just walk in and you need to make reservation 2 days prior. Hence it is categorised as a private dining restaurant. I also understand the chefs are flexible with their menu and they will try to accommodate to your request within the capability.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

Antoinette - Wealth Of Sweet Indulgences For The Lunar New Year

AntoinetteCNY21

Once again, Chef Pang of Antoinette is at the top of his game for the Lunar New Year with a wealth of new creations as well as bringing back the signature classics to usher in the Year of the Pig.

AntoinetteCNY9
Hong Bao

AntoinetteCNY19

During the Lunar New Year, the act of giving Hong Bao (red packet) symbolises sharing of blessing. With this auspicious symbolisation, Chef Pang created the Hong Bao ($10 small / $25 big) for this Lunar New Year using a combination of French and Japanese bread making techniques. The bread is infused with red dragon fruit, hence the flavour and colour. Inside the bread, you can find layers of nian gao (made in-house with black sugar and fried shallots), candied yam and sweet potato, pork floss and salted egg.

AntoinetteCNY6
Abundantly

AntoinetteCNY21

A fun and dramatic new cake for the Lunar New Year is the Abundantly ($38). The chiffon cake is infused with rich purple sweet potato and topped with a thin circle of black sesame peanut feuilletine. To enjoy it, diners lift of the little partition for a windfalls of wealth and luck. It releases a flowing profusion of salty cheese cream that drapes over the cake, with a wealth of black and gold tapioca bubbles steeped in black sugar, candied sweet potato and yam cubes, gold-covered chocolate coin, ingot and koi fish. It is like have a creamy cheese bubble tea cake.

AntoinetteCNY4
Purplelette

For bite-sized pleasures, there is the Purplelette macarons ($3 per piece / $19 for 6 pieces). The macaron shell is made with purple sweet potato yam and sandwiched between a ring of sweet potato cream with a cheese centre filling. It is hard to stop at one.

AntoinetteCNY8
Queen's Yusheng

For a different kind of Yusheng, the classic Queen's Yusheng ($88) makes a return for 2019's Chinese New Year. Cracking open the golden chocolate egg reveals freshly diced and shredded pineapple, Thai green mango, red dragon fruit and pomelo. Tossed to a year of prosperity and good luck, together with almonds, cashews, mandarin orange butter cake, meringue kisses, yam and sweet potato chips.

AntoinetteCNY10

For those who is planning to share some happiness to their friends, families and colleagues, Antoinette has a number of gift options such as the gorgeously floral Saint Honore gift box ($75), Singapura Cookie Tin ($24), propitiously bright red Luxur gift box in three different sizes ($20/$26/$35), as well as the Bisou gift box in a graceful grey velvet in three different sizes.

Famous Ah Long Pancake.Popiah @ Sultan Plaza - But It Is Their Popiah That I'm After

20180209_124527_HDR

Popiah is something that I can have every other day. I used to have weekly meeting at Aliwa Street and Famous Ah Long Pancake's popiah at Sultan Plaza was always a meal that I looked forward to.

20180320_103058_HDR
Chicken Floss Salad Popiah 4.2/5

Though my workplace is no longer there, I would still patronize them as and when I have yoga classes as my studio is in the vicinity. What I crave for, is their Chicken Floss Salad Popiah ($1.80). Made with chilled shredded turnips, if you have that before a meal, it serves somewhat like an appertiser, especially when your taste buds are dulled by the humid weather. Full of crunchy elements in there besides the turnips, there are shredded cucumbers, fresh coral lettuce and of course the quintessential ground peanuts and the crispy bits. This summer salad popiah does look a bit raw compared to its regular counterpart but the spread of mayonnaise that replaces the sweet sauce soothes out all the raw edges of the vegetables.

20180320_103008_HDR

Chicken floss and mayonnaise make one of the best teams. The floss being dry and salty, while the latter is creamy and sweet, which is why this popiah is always at the top of my list! And what I appreciate is that each popiah is compact with ingredients, when many others are loose and simply drenched with sweet sauce and over-seasoned turnips. One thing that is less perfect is the skin, which tends to be a bit stiff but it is still very tasty once everything is put together.

20180321_120832_HDR
Pancake 4/5

Their pancakes serve the residents and office crowd here well, be it as a snack or a meal. For a meal, most go for their varieties with egg. Egg, Ham and Cheese the most popular here. Surprisingly, Egg and Cai Pok is also quite well sought after.

20180209_124425_HDR

Traditional Popiah ($1.60) is available too, which I enjoy equally. And I feel what elevates it from the rest, other than the nicely cooked turnips, is the addition of coriander and shredded cucumber. Details like this do make a lot of difference to the taste, and the recipe here is done right.

Photos and words by Si An. A girl who is allured by travelling, loves the feel of freedom, smell of the rain and the aroma of fine coffee and food.

Antoinette @ Penhas Road - The Ever-Inspired Chef Pang Has Unveiled A New Menu

Antoinette36

The ever-inspired Chef Pang of Antoinette has unveiled a new menu, introducing a number  of new savory and brunch dishes. Together with the new menu launched, it has also introduced a number of new cocktails to complement the its extensive tea pairing.

Antoinette19

Some of these new cocktails are Pretty Pink ($16), Prescription ($14), Huat Ah! ($18) and Blue Romance ($12). The eye catching drink probably is the Prescription which comes with a pill sachet which contains grass jelly cubes. This is a playful drink whereby the guests get to play doctor and mix the houjicha latte, okinawan black sugar syrup, yuzu ice cubes and fairy grass together to concoct their own medicine drink.

Antoinette18
Baked Rigatoni 4/5 and Black Bait 4.5/5

For some light starters, there are the Baked Rigatoni ($8) and Black Bait ($12). The baked rigatoni pasta is satueed in tomato cream sauce, topped with a golden brown crust of gruyere cheese and emmental cheese. This is an all-day comforting dish. As for the black bait, it is a very addictive snack. The morsels of fish is dusted with homemade spice seasonings which consists of onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, salt and pepper with a sprinkle of raspberry powder.

Antoinette14
Watermelon & Smoked Duck Salad 4/5

The interplay of color for the Watermelon &  Smoked Duck Salad ($24) definitely stands out. It looks like a garden in autumn except that it is on the plate. Two components on the plate stood out for me. The beautiful tender smoked duck and pickled watermelon cubes which has a refreshing acidity to the dish.

Antoinette22
Wagyu Beef Tagliatelle 4.2/5

The pasta for the Wagyu Beef Tagliatelle ($26) is made in house using whole wheat. The delightful bite of the pasta is complemented by the delicious ragout which has been cooked with red wine, herbs and wagyu beef. It also comes with an onsen egg and grated parmesan cheese.

Antoinette24
Double Prawn Linguine 4.2/5

Inspired by the local prawn noodles is the Double Prawn Linguine ($26). It has a rich umani-spicy note from the prawn bisque and spicy shrimp paste, that is well coated around the ribbons of linguine. The dish is then finished with zucchini strips, ebiko, sakura ebi, nori and shiso cress for flavours as well as textures.

Antoinette28
Kurobuta Ham & Cheese Toast 4.2/5

Toast lover will rejoice to know that Antoinette has added 4 savoury and 2 sweet Toast to their new menu. For savoury there are Smoked Salmon, Kurobuta Ham & Cheese, Wild Mushrooms and Avocado Mash. If you have a sweet tooth, there are Banana and Strawberry.

Antoinette32
Banana Toast 4.2/5

We tried both the Kurobuta Ham & Cheese Toast ($14) and Banana Toast ($12). The bread of the Kurobuta Ham & Cheese Toast  is brushed with butter before being toasted to a nice crispy crust on the exterior while retaining a soft texture inside. It is then spread with a layer of sweet potato mash,  followed with topping of kurobuta ham and emmental cheese. As for the sweet Banana Toast, it comes with salted butter, nutella, fresh banana, caramel popcorn, coco pops and drizzled with chocolate sauce.

Antoinette33
Fondant au Chocolat 4.2/5

The Fondant au Chocolat ($14) is a warm chocolate cake, served with cold brewed coffee ice cream with orange confit. The combination of warm and cold, with the richness of the chocolate cake will satisfy anyone with a sweet tooth.

Antoinette35
Watermelon Kakigori 4.2/5

Making a spectacular entrance is the Watermelon Kakigori ($20) which is appealing to both taste and presentation. The refreshing watermelon comes in cubes as well as shaved ice. Hidden underneath the shaved ice is earl grey chiffon cake layered with yuzu cream, fresh strawberries, rose petal foam and almond crumble. Perfect for sharing and ending your meal on a sweet finale.

Southpaw Bar & Sushi @ Cavan Road (Lavender) - Now Open For Lunch With Delicious Rice Bowls

Southpaw11

For those staying or working in the Lavender area, you will be glad to know that Southpaw Bar & Sushi is opened for lunch now. The new lunch set menu consists of 4 different rice bowls which includes a bowl of miso soup.

Southpaw1
Shake Don $17.90 4/5

For salmon lovers, you will enjoy the Shake Don ($17.90) with thick slices of salmon laid on top of the seasoned Japanese rice. This is crowned with ikura roes for a burst of popping refreshness.

Southpaw5
Chirashi Don 4.2/5

For those that prefers variety, you can opt for the Chirashi Don ($18.90) which consists of a mix of sashimi on rice and ikura roes. I like the fact that extra effort in aburi some of the sashimi for that extra aroma.

Southpaw6
Sashimi Unajyu 4.5/5

For those that is looking for a more substantial lunch, you can go for the Sashimi Unajyu ($22.80) which consists of charred and fatty unagi on rice, served separately with a plate of mix sashimi and miso soup. I personally preferred this rice bowl as I find that the sweetness of the unagi goes well with the marinated rice.

Southpaw12
Wagyu Beef Don 4.2/5

The other crowd favourite is the Wagyu Beef Don ($18.90). Brimming with tender slices of wagyu beef and topped with an onsen egg. The lunch set also comes with a bowl of miso soup.

The highlight for the new lunch sets by Southpaw Bar & Sushi is actually the rice. Instead of plain Japanese rice, the chef has seasoned the rice with dashi for a more vibrant taste complementing the various ingredients of the rice bowl lunch sets.

The Chinese Kitchen (厨神私房菜) @ Cavan Road (Lavender) - Comfort Traditional Chinese Dishes With A Touch Of Fineness

TheChineseKitchen26

Newly opened in Lavender is The Chinese Kitchen (厨神私房菜), opened by local renowned Chef Austen Ong, the former president of society of Chinese cuisine Chef (Singapore). He is also dubbed the 厨神 (God of the Kitchen) by the culinary industry, probably from his numerous achievement such as winning the Gold medalist of Asian Cuisine in the 8th FHA International Salon Culinaire, Most Creative award in the 4th World Championship of Chinese Cuisine and Champion of Taipei's World Culinary Contest in both 2005 and 2007.

TheChineseKitchen5
Organic Okra with Pickle Chilli 4.5/5

We started with some light bites for our dinner. First, we tried the Organic Okra with Pickle Chilli ($6). The okra or ladyfinger has a nice crunchy texture without that slimy texture. The star of the dish is actually the pickle chilli, it complemented the okra excellently. The pickle chilli is so good that I could not resist pairing it with other ingredients.

TheChineseKitchen8
Pork Trotter Jelly, Passion Fruit Infused Cucumber 4/5

Given a touch of exquisite to a traditional dish is the Pork Trotter Jelly with Passion Fruit Infused Cucumber ($8). A Teochew delicacy which is not commonly available on the restaurant's menu due to the painstaking process of making it. The pork trotter jelly encased in a soft gelatine cubes with savoury pork shreds is accompanied with crisp chilled cucumber slice.

TheChineseKitchen10
"Ma La" Baby Squids and Eryngii Mushroom 3.8/5

From the description of the dish, I thought the "Ma La" Baby Squids and Eryngii Mushroom ($9) would be very spicy but it turned out rather sweet. Putting that aside, the deep fried baby squid is very crispy and the eryngii mushroom provides the additional crunch for a multi-textural enjoyment.

TheChineseKitchen13
Signature Old Fifty Collagen Broth, Ocean Catch 4.5/5

I was wondering why the next dish is named Signature Old Fifty Collagen Broth with Ocean Catch ($38 for 2-3pax/ $55 for 4-6pax)? It was explained that the broth is using the cooking style of the 50s, in which the pot of soup is simmered over charcoal for 10 hours. The collagen rich broth is a result of cooking the soup base with chicken, duck, pork and fish skin. Diners can choice from 3 different types of fishes - Ocean Catch, Wild Caught and Snapper. Not only that, you can have the soup in its original flavour, miso or spicy. This is definitely one of the best order dish here.

TheChineseKitchen16
Charcoal Grilled Orange Sea Perch, Sea Salt & Spices 4.2/5

Not commonly used in modern Chinese cuisine is charcoal grilling. One of such dishes on the menu is the Charcoal Grilled Orange Sea Perch with Sea Salt & Spices ($58). I like how the grilling manages to locked in the moisture and succulent meat. The fish meat is best pair with the unique blend of sauces that brings out its freshness.

TheChineseKitchen20
Braised La La "Ying Yang" Noodle 3.5/5

The Braised La La "Ying Yang" Noodle ($14) is another interesting item on the menu whereby Chef Austen uses two different type of noodles - beehoon and dangmyeon, giving the dish a contrasting textures, soaking up the sweet broth from the seafood. However, the kitchen was a bit heavy with the salt during my visit.

TheChineseKitchen22
Charcoal Grilled Banana, Sea Salt, Caramel, Ice Cream 4/5

For dessert, is another item from the charcoal grill, Charcoal Grilled Banana, Sea Salt, Caramel, Ice Cream ($4.50). The different components on the plate seems rather isolated but when you have them together, a pleasant harmony sings in the mouth.

TheChineseKitchen2

After trying the food by Chef Austen, my takeaway is that he has given a touch of fineness to dishes tat is close to our heart, without losing its roots of traditional Chinese cuisine. More importantly, the pricing is very reasonable.

Miffy x Kumoya Pop-Up Café @ Jalan Klapa – The First Miffy Café Opens In Singapore

flatlay2

Kumoya Cafe. First of its kind in Singapore, this halal-certified Japanese-French cafe with a pop-up concept introduces a brand new character theme this season. Can you guess which? Following its previous successful collaboration with the Sanrio character Cinnamoroll, another adorable character hops in and takes over Kumoya. It's none other than the Dutch Artist Dick Bruna's cartoon bunny Miffy!

Fans of Miffy rejoice, as from 5th October to 31st December, Miffy x Kumoya Pop-Up Café opens in Singapore. Here, one can expect a wide range of Miffy-inspired dishes and drinks in the menu, meticulously curated and creatively styled by food artist Shirley Wong (@littlemissbento), as well as whimisical interiors decked out in Miffy-themed decor to create an inclusive experience for diners to immerse themselves wholly in the world of Miffy.

wonderfully waffles with karaage chicken
Wonderfully Waffles with Karaage Chicken 4.2/5

The first main course I had, also pegged as the most popular main item in the menu, is the Wonderfully Waffles with Karrage Chicken ($21.90). The dish arrived in a tempting pile of bite-sized karrage chicken sitting atop a thick waffle, a side of fresh garden salad, and an array of star-shaped cheese and cute miffy-shaped potato cakes and carrots. Fried to a golden brown, each crispy shell encases juicy and tender pops of chicken meat which goes wonderfully well with the fluffy, buttery waffle. Drizzles some of those house-made sweet shoya glaze in apposite addition to that sweet-savoury combination, and it strikes the perfect balance between flavors, textures and richness that I really enjoyed. Essentially the traditional Chicken & Waffles dish, done cuter but right.

seafood curry rice
Splashing Good Fun Japanese Seafood Curry Rice 4/5

The next recommended dish that I had was the Splashing Good Fun Japanese Seafood Curry Rice ($24.90). It comes in the form of a huge miffy face-shaped Japanese rice, and served with fish Kamaboko, cheese stars, steamed broccoli, breaded calamari, breaded ebi and scallop, and fresh tempura salmon, all of which swimming in a plate of flavourful Japanese curry. The dish bears a sweeter rendition of its curry, perhaps a hint of spiciness that is barely detectable, yet exudes a subtle aroma of spices that is not overpowering as well. Proceed to mix it all in with their generous portion of fluffy Japanese rice and it suffices as an enjoyment on its own. While the fried toppings are not as greasy, the breaded casing gives a nice crunch to the firm flavorous meat within.

chicken katsu burger1
You, Me & Miffy Makes 3 Chicken Katsu Burger 3.8/5

The You Me & Miffy Makes 3 Chicken Katsu Burger ($18.90) comes with a piece of chicken katsu sandwiched in between Miffy face shaped mantou buns, served with fries in BBQ dip, and fresh garden salad with cheese teddy and cheese star. The breaded fried chicken cutlet boasts a plumpier juicy texture within its crispy exterior. When eaten with those soft and fluffy buns, every elements come together as a decent burger which is well executed. I am actually quite impressed with it.

matcha shibuya toast
Matcha Moutain Azuki Shibuya Toast 4.2/5

This Matcha Mountain Azuki Shibuya Toast ($23.90) was pegged as the most popular dessert dish in the menu, and rightfully so. Slicing the huge shibuya toast apart reveals several cubes of buttery and crispy toast within. The smooth creamy swirl of Hokkaido softserve atop added a delicious icy milkiness to the warm buttered toast cubes. The other elements - dollops of matcha cream with fruits, dango balls, azuki, matcha sticks and a sprinkling of crunchy pistachio bits proved to be needful supplements that contribute to the entirety of the dish. Complete this with a drizzle of the slightly bitter matcha sauce for maximum pleasure.

cotton candy drink
Miffy Original Orange Soda 4/5

From the drinks menu, I had the very instagrammable Miffy Original Orange Soda ($14.90). It arrives at my table in a huge fluffy cloud of cotton candy, again Miffy-shaped, perched precariously on top of a glass of orange syrup drink with nata de coco and orange slices. It also comes with a cup of fizzy soda for me to pour and mix in with the syrup, melting the cotton candy in the process as well. I was initially skeptical about its taste but the melted cotton candy adds a sufficient sweetness to the tangy soda drink, giving it a non-cloying, refreshing and balanced taste to the overall drink. Do remember to whip out your camera and snap those photos fast though, as the cotton candy may melt a little too quickly.
bunny yuzu delight drink
Bunny Yuzu Delight 4/5

The Bunny Yuzu Delight ($10.90) is a lovely bunny tangy drink made with yuzu, cold butterfly pea-flower tea and nata de coco. Not as tangy, slightly sweeten with a hint of yuzu aroma, it is a refreshing drink perfect to wash down the food I had. Also, do note that every order of the butterfly pea-flower beverage comes with a limited edition Miffy coaster too (while stocks last!)

flatlay1

While cutesy character-themed cafes may be deemed over hyped with its lovely aesthetics yet mediocre food, the experience at Miffy x Kumoya pop-up cafe did not disappoint. Those irresistibly cute dishes are a feast to the eyes, and fare pretty well tastewise too. Also, do remember to check out the various Miffy merchandise on display at the counter and the Miffy-themed cookbook written by @Littlemissbento while you’re there. Note: The Miffy x Kumoya pop-up cafe collaboration will be ongoing till 31st December, so remember to head down before it ends!
