The Hainan Story (海南宝) @ Hillion Mall - 5 Hainanese Brands Under One Roof, Including Ah Chiang's Porridge, Wee Nam Kee And Newspaper Curry Rice

IMG_1945

The Hainan Story on a Saturday afternoon was bustling with diners. I see the reason for their popularity, as they have a huge variety of food and offer very family-friendly options.

What is unique about the restaurant's branch here in Hillion Mall is that it houses five different Hainanese brands under one space. These include the renowned Ah Chiang's Porridge, Wee Nam Kee and Newspaper Curry Rice. The space was renovated to look like a vibrantly decorated mini coffeeshop.

IMG_1938
Local Beverages

You will find a full list of the familiar local offerings on the beverage menu. We had our usual Kopi and Teh, decently fragrant though a tad sweet.

IMG_1940
1980’s Hainanese Pork Cutlet Coated with Potato Chip Crumbs 4/5

On the Western menu by Uncle Robert Hainanese Western & BBQ, we had the traditional 1980's Hainanese Pork Cutlet Coated with Potato Chip Crumbs ($16.80). The BBQ sauce leans sweeter than we'd like, but the crunch on the cutlet was good. We saw several younger diners enjoying this. Other options from the Western menu include pasta, fish and chips and a kids menu.

IMG_1941
Mama Wee Curry Chicken Drumstick Set 4.5/5

Newspaper Curry Rice's Mama Wee Curry Chicken Drumstick Set ($9.80) was easily our top favourite of our meal here. The curry here may be different from your liking if you prefer thicker and more lemak renditions, but I loved how this carried a lighter consistency and was superbly fragrant.

My dining companions and I thought this was value for money too. A portion has steamed rice, omelette, sambal tempeh, prawn crackers, drumstick and a side of additive lotus root and brinjal. The accompanying sambal belacan packed a good punch too.

IMG_1942
Ah Chiang Mix Porridge Set 4/5

From Ah Chiang's Porridge, we had the Mix Porridge Set: Pork Ball & Sliced Meat ($9.80), which came with half a youtiao. I don't eat porridge that much, but my dining companion, who does, enjoyed this bowl.

The porridge was sufficiently smooth and thick, with a generous amount of tender pork and pork balls. Porridge options here are categorised into pork, batang fish and century egg.

IMG_1943
Steamed Chicken Drumstick Rice 3.8/5

Wee Nam Kee's Steamed Chicken Drumstick Rice ($7.10) came complete with a bowl of soup and the classic condiments of chilli, dark soy and ginger sauce. While the chicken meat was tender and succulent, the rice could be much more fragrant.

IMG_1944
Laksa with Hainanese Steamed Chicken 3.8/5

If you have laksa cravings, the Laksa with Hainanese Steamed Chicken ($9.80) is a decent option. It is pricier, however, served with steamed chicken, crispy pork skin, fish cake, hard-boiled egg and tau pok.

IMG_1939
High-Tea Special 3.5/5

I never expected to see a three-tiered High-Tea Special ($34.80) on the menu! On the base, it features an assortment of fried items such as chicken wings, prawns, fries and ngoh hiang. The middle tier has kaya toast and the traditional Hainanese kueh, Yi Bua. Finally, on top, there are cookies and the eatery's popular mini swiss rolls (orh nee, ondeh ondeh). The set comes inclusive of two drinks.

The two bottom tiers were, unfortunately, average. Our unanimous preferred item was the mini swiss rolls which you can purchase in individual pieces from their bakery.

IMG_1946

Speaking about the bakery, do make sure to take a look. The small space is built in the same area as the eatery, accessible from the dining space or from the exterior of Hillion Mall.

Breads were constantly freshly baked, leaving a lovely aroma in the space. We bagged home several recommendations, the Char Siew Bolo ($3.80), Yam Floss Bun ($2.20) and Curry Chicken Polo Bolo ($3.80). All three were fresh and fluffy but could do with slightly more filling.

Pizzakaya @ Vivocity - New Pizza Concept Restaurant by Japan Food Holding Group

Photo 22-4-23, 6 04 23 PM

Located within Vivovity, Pizzakaya specialises in Western-Japanese fusion dishes, focusing on pizzas. The menu features multiple 10" hand-stretched Japanese-style pizza variations with different toppings piled atop, such as Takoyaki and Okonomiyaki. The unique pizza pairings seemed bizarre in this Western-Japanese fusion attempt, but was it worth the venture?

Photo 22-4-23, 6 17 09 PM
Takoyaki Pizza 3/5

Among the pizzas that stood out most to us in terms of novelty was the Takoyaki Pizza ($19.80). The pizza crust was decent, churned out from impressive brick ovens in the kitchen. The edges are puffy and lightly blistered, with a chewy thin crust slathered with homemade sauce. What lies atop are multiple soft battered octopus balls. However, eating the pizza itself posed a challenge. The pizza can't be picked up without the Takoyaki balls rolling off the slice. The savouriness and carb-on-carb combination also felt one-dimensional in taste and got cloying halfway through.

Photo 22-4-23, 6 25 13 PM
Chicken Teriyaki Pizza 3/5

We tried the Chicken Teriyaki Pizza ($19.80), another novelty pizza flavour. It came with a mountain of chicken teriyaki strips, omelette and cabbage in the centre. Unfortunately, the sauce used for the okonomiyaki caused the pizza centre to be soggy, turning the consumption into an even messier affair. The teriyaki chicken strips were also dry and not as tender as we would have liked. In short, we felt that the flavour pairing of okonomiyaki and pizza doesn't go well together.

Photo 22-4-23, 6 12 02 PM
Saute Spicy Garlic Prawn Spaghetti 3.5/5

We also tried other dishes that they offer on the menu. The Saute Spicy Garlic Prawn Spaghetti ($19.80) was a saving grace from the pizzas, with al dente pasta with a subtle kick of spice topped with well-cooked prawns.

Photo 22-4-23, 6 13 17 PM
Chicken Katsu Curry Rice 3/5

The Chicken Katsu Curry Rice ($16.80) features slices of chicken katsu atop rice, slathered in Japanese curry. While I enjoyed the crispy and tender chicken katsu, the curry lacked taste and felt a tad watered down.

Photo 22-4-23, 6 09 02 PM
Japanese Yuzu Sparkling Soda 4/5, Berry Grape Fizz 4/5

Their signature drinks, Japanese Yuzu Sparkling Soda ($8) and Berry Grape Fizz ($8) were refreshing and delicious. It was good to wash down the intensely savoury pizza we had.

Maddie's Kitchen @ Far East Plaza - Wallet Friendly Zi Char Dishes At Orchard Road

MaddiesKitchen-20

If you think that having a meal at Orchard Road will be very expensive, you are wrong. They are food outlets that sell affordable priced food in that area too. Maddie's Kitchen is probably known to many locals, hidden and located in the far corner on level two of Far East Plaza.

MaddiesKitchen-08
Pork Chop Set 3.8/5

I tried the Pork Chop Set Curry Rice ($6.80). For the price, it is value for money. The messy plate of rice comes with deep-fried pork chop, stewed cabbage and a fried egg, drenched in a pool of curry sauce. Though the curry sauce is not spicy, it is packed with aroma. It is the soul that holds everything together. As for the other ingredients on the plate, the pork chop was a bit hard but generous in serving, while the cabbage was sweet and soft.

MaddiesKitchen-19

MaddiesKitchen-23
Beef Tenderloin Hor Fun 4.2/5

The highlight for me is the Beef Tenderloin Hor Fun ($13.80). First to hit me is the breadth of the wok, piled with a generous serving of bittergourd, black beans and tender beef slices. The noodle dish is common in many zichar places but what makes it different here is the quality of beef used. Slightly seared, thickly cut and tender.

MaddiesKitchen-29

Overall, Maddie's Kitchen offers delicious yet wallet-friendly zichar dishes at Orchard Road. Though I only tried two dishes out of the eclectic menu, it already won me over with its delicious food. I will definitely drop by again for my meal if I am at Orchard Road.

Rempapa @ Park Place Residences at PLQ - Chef Damian D'Silva Opens All-Day Singapore Heritage Cuisine Restaurant

Rempapa22

I have been following Chef Damian D'Silva heritage cooking when he had a stall at Timbre+ Ayer Rajah, followed by Folklore and Restaurant Kin. But, unfortunately, he didn't stay long at any one place. Hence I was glad to hear he is making a come back with a new restaurant - Rempapa at Park Place Residences at PLQ. Rempapa offers an all-day dining concept where the eclectic menu caters for different times of day - Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch, and Dinner.

Rempapa6
Chickpea Curry with Roti/ String Hoppers 4.2/5

Rempapa8

Available for both breakfast and brunch is the Chickpea Curry ($18) with either Roti or String Hoppers. Perked up by the addition of Kashmiri chilli powder and turmeric powder, it is an aromatic combo of Indian and Eurasian curry flavours. It's best to have it with the buttery crisp roti or let the string hoppers soak up the delicious curry.

Rempapa11
Sri Lankan Chicken Curry with String Hoppers 4/5

Rempapa12

I know Chef Damian can cook many cuisines, but Sri Lankan is new to me. The Sri Lankan Chicken Curry with String Hoppers ($16) is milder with tender kampong chicken thigh. Traditionally, Sri Lankan curry is a more watery kind of gravy that is perfect for the string hoppers, commonly known in Singapore as idiyappam or putu mayam, to soak up the curry.

Rempapa15
Stir-fried Chee Cheong Fun 3.5/5

Chee Cheong Fun is a trending dish in the food scene this year, with several hawker stalls selling it, but they all sell the steamed version. Over at Rempapa, there is the stir-fried version. The Stir-fried Chee Cheong Fun ($13) is fried together with prawn, egg, and yellow chive. It is similar to our local white carrot cake replaced with smooth and soft rice noodle roll.

Rempapa17
Seafood Curry Mee 4.8/5

The Seafood Curry Mee ($18) available during lunch and brunch comprises yellow noodles, bee hoon, pig skin, boiled prawns, fish cake, fresh cockles (optional), long tau pok and beansprouts. According to Chef Damian, his interpretation is from a Hokkien hawker dish served during the 1920s and 1930s. He has used his own curry powder blend for more subtle spice flavours. Sand prawns and dry shrimps are used to make the stock instead of coconut milk, resulting in a rich and umami soup base which I drank to the last drop.

Rempapa21
Fish Nasi Lemak 4.2/5

Rempapa24
Fried Chicken 4.5/5

The Nasi Lemak ($17) comes with either Fish or Fried Chicken. The fragrant coconut rice is accompanied by sambal, silver fish, egg and cucumber. Customers who opted for the fish nasi lemak gets a whole selar fish which is enormous! I prefer the fried chicken nasi lemak, which is comparable to the popular fried chicken nasi lemak from The Coconut Club.

Rempapa28
Fried Chicken Curry Rice 4/5

To introduce heritage cuisine to the younger generation, Chef Damian introduces them to heritage flavours by giving the dish a modern presentation. He believes the food needs to be accepted by them first before trying and learning more about heritage cuisine. Hence, he has come up with the Fried Chicken Curry Rice ($16), presented as a Japanese curry with kaarage, combing the essences of Eurasian, Peranakan, Indian, Malay and Chinese cuisines.

Rempapa44
Kedongdong Salad 4.5/5

For the dinner menu, the dishes are more communal. The menu is different from the breakfast, lunch and brunch menus. We had the Kedongdong Salad ($15) to kick start our dinner. I am not strange to the wing bean salad as Chef has served it before in his previous restaurant. However, the new version is less spicy, and he has added more shrimp floss.

Rempapa32
Baca Assam 4.8/5

The Baca Assam ($38) is a dish that Chef Damian's granddad cooked only on special occasions. It is a lost Eurasian heritage dish that is a mix of Peranakan and Indian flavours. Beef brisket is used, and I enjoyed the tenderness. The addition of tamarind gives the beef brisket the tanginess, which cuts the richness and whetted the appetite.

Rempapa35
Lamb Leg Rendang 3/5

The Lamb Leg Rendang ($38) is a classic Minangkabau dish cooked in a mix of wet spice paste. Unfortunately, while I enjoyed the rempah, the boneless lamb leg came across on the dry side.

Rempapa41
Slow-cooked Belly Pork with Ah Seng Sauce 4.2/5

It is not all about Chef Damian's family recipes at Rempapa. The restaurant also showcases heritage recipes shared by the younger chefs to motivate their immersion into heritage cuisine. The Slow-cooked Belly Pork with Ah Seng Sauce ($23) is a heritage Hokkien dish that hails from Penang. The soul has to be the mildly spicy sauce on top of the pork belly. It is like having mala xiang gou.

Rempapa55
Kueh Platter 4.5/5

Not to be missed at Rempapa is the daily assortment of kuehs. The Kueh Platter ($6 for 4pc, $10 for 8pc, $15 for 12pc) includes favourites such as Kueh Kosui and Kueh Ku, Kueh Bengkah, Pulut Bengkah, Talam Keladi, Sago Ubi, Lapis Pulot, Rempah Udang and others available on the day.

Rempapa59

Rempapa is unlike any of Chef Damian's previous restaurants. At the new restaurant, Chef Damian introduces his 'Singapore New Heritage Cuisine', in which recipes drawn from the soul of tradition are reinvented with elements of different ethnicities to create flavour profiles that resonate with today's diner. Rempapa is not just a restaurant. It is the place where Chef Damian elevates Singapore heritage food to a status among the world's great cuisines. And where 'cultural sustainability' is nurtured through engaging the next generation of diners and mentoring fresh talent, seeing them take pride in Singapore cuisine and driving it to the next level.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

Miffy x Kumoya Pop-Up Café @ Jalan Klapa – The First Miffy Café Opens In Singapore

flatlay2

Kumoya Cafe. First of its kind in Singapore, this halal-certified Japanese-French cafe with a pop-up concept introduces a brand new character theme this season. Can you guess which? Following its previous successful collaboration with the Sanrio character Cinnamoroll, another adorable character hops in and takes over Kumoya. It's none other than the Dutch Artist Dick Bruna's cartoon bunny Miffy!

Fans of Miffy rejoice, as from 5th October to 31st December, Miffy x Kumoya Pop-Up Café opens in Singapore. Here, one can expect a wide range of Miffy-inspired dishes and drinks in the menu, meticulously curated and creatively styled by food artist Shirley Wong (@littlemissbento), as well as whimisical interiors decked out in Miffy-themed decor to create an inclusive experience for diners to immerse themselves wholly in the world of Miffy.

wonderfully waffles with karaage chicken
Wonderfully Waffles with Karaage Chicken 4.2/5

The first main course I had, also pegged as the most popular main item in the menu, is the Wonderfully Waffles with Karrage Chicken ($21.90). The dish arrived in a tempting pile of bite-sized karrage chicken sitting atop a thick waffle, a side of fresh garden salad, and an array of star-shaped cheese and cute miffy-shaped potato cakes and carrots. Fried to a golden brown, each crispy shell encases juicy and tender pops of chicken meat which goes wonderfully well with the fluffy, buttery waffle. Drizzles some of those house-made sweet shoya glaze in apposite addition to that sweet-savoury combination, and it strikes the perfect balance between flavors, textures and richness that I really enjoyed. Essentially the traditional Chicken & Waffles dish, done cuter but right.

seafood curry rice
Splashing Good Fun Japanese Seafood Curry Rice 4/5

The next recommended dish that I had was the Splashing Good Fun Japanese Seafood Curry Rice ($24.90). It comes in the form of a huge miffy face-shaped Japanese rice, and served with fish Kamaboko, cheese stars, steamed broccoli, breaded calamari, breaded ebi and scallop, and fresh tempura salmon, all of which swimming in a plate of flavourful Japanese curry. The dish bears a sweeter rendition of its curry, perhaps a hint of spiciness that is barely detectable, yet exudes a subtle aroma of spices that is not overpowering as well. Proceed to mix it all in with their generous portion of fluffy Japanese rice and it suffices as an enjoyment on its own. While the fried toppings are not as greasy, the breaded casing gives a nice crunch to the firm flavorous meat within.

chicken katsu burger1
You, Me & Miffy Makes 3 Chicken Katsu Burger 3.8/5

The You Me & Miffy Makes 3 Chicken Katsu Burger ($18.90) comes with a piece of chicken katsu sandwiched in between Miffy face shaped mantou buns, served with fries in BBQ dip, and fresh garden salad with cheese teddy and cheese star. The breaded fried chicken cutlet boasts a plumpier juicy texture within its crispy exterior. When eaten with those soft and fluffy buns, every elements come together as a decent burger which is well executed. I am actually quite impressed with it.

matcha shibuya toast
Matcha Moutain Azuki Shibuya Toast 4.2/5

This Matcha Mountain Azuki Shibuya Toast ($23.90) was pegged as the most popular dessert dish in the menu, and rightfully so. Slicing the huge shibuya toast apart reveals several cubes of buttery and crispy toast within. The smooth creamy swirl of Hokkaido softserve atop added a delicious icy milkiness to the warm buttered toast cubes. The other elements - dollops of matcha cream with fruits, dango balls, azuki, matcha sticks and a sprinkling of crunchy pistachio bits proved to be needful supplements that contribute to the entirety of the dish. Complete this with a drizzle of the slightly bitter matcha sauce for maximum pleasure.

cotton candy drink
Miffy Original Orange Soda 4/5

From the drinks menu, I had the very instagrammable Miffy Original Orange Soda ($14.90). It arrives at my table in a huge fluffy cloud of cotton candy, again Miffy-shaped, perched precariously on top of a glass of orange syrup drink with nata de coco and orange slices. It also comes with a cup of fizzy soda for me to pour and mix in with the syrup, melting the cotton candy in the process as well. I was initially skeptical about its taste but the melted cotton candy adds a sufficient sweetness to the tangy soda drink, giving it a non-cloying, refreshing and balanced taste to the overall drink. Do remember to whip out your camera and snap those photos fast though, as the cotton candy may melt a little too quickly.
bunny yuzu delight drink
Bunny Yuzu Delight 4/5

The Bunny Yuzu Delight ($10.90) is a lovely bunny tangy drink made with yuzu, cold butterfly pea-flower tea and nata de coco. Not as tangy, slightly sweeten with a hint of yuzu aroma, it is a refreshing drink perfect to wash down the food I had. Also, do note that every order of the butterfly pea-flower beverage comes with a limited edition Miffy coaster too (while stocks last!)

flatlay1

While cutesy character-themed cafes may be deemed over hyped with its lovely aesthetics yet mediocre food, the experience at Miffy x Kumoya pop-up cafe did not disappoint. Those irresistibly cute dishes are a feast to the eyes, and fare pretty well tastewise too. Also, do remember to check out the various Miffy merchandise on display at the counter and the Miffy-themed cookbook written by @Littlemissbento while you’re there. Note: The Miffy x Kumoya pop-up cafe collaboration will be ongoing till 31st December, so remember to head down before it ends!

Thank You For Being The Real Heroes Of Our Hawker Heritage

IMG_3523ed

When I first saw the series of videos released by Tiger Beer Singapore in conjunction with their Street Food Movement to preserve our hawker heritage earlier this year, I was moved and touched by it. The videos show the unappreciated hardship of the hawkers, giving them their due recognition which they fully deserved. It is great to know that Tiger Beer Singapore has continued to champion this movement and has released another two videos featuring Madam Wong Li Er of Cambridge Road Hong Kong Roast Pork and Deniece Tan of Truly Test Kitchen.

IMG_3525ed

To be frank, Cambridge Road Hong Kong Roast Pork at Pei Kio Food Centre has never been on my radar until I watched the video released by Tiger Beer.

This is one of two short films, featuring our hawkers which aim to rally Singaporeans to show their appreciation and gratitude to the hawkers – the people behind our iconic local street food and culture.

IMG_3527ed

Madam Wong Li Er is a 65 years old hawker selling Hong Kong-style roasted meat for the past 50 years. Although Madam Wong claims that she’s just a hawker and does not have many skills, this does not deter her from giving back to society and the needy by giving out food coupons to the elderly twice a month for them to redeem meals at her stall.

IMG_0144ed

After watching the video, I made a trip down to Pei Kio Food Centre hoping to have a taste of her roasted meat. While I was queuing for my food, I observed how Madam Wong seems to know everyone in the queue, breaking her usual routine to greet and catch up with them. Some of her regular patrons noticed her from the short film and started teasing her that she is now a star, with photos and the video being played all over. I ordered a plate of Roasted Duck and Char Siew Rice which comes with complimentary stir-fried cabbages, which may be a simple accompaniment to my meal, but felt meaningful and from Madam Wong’s heart, to provide her customers with a balanced meal. The thought of it made me feel bad and embarrassed. It struck me that we are quick to criticize on the food that is served to us but have we ever stop and show our gratitude to these unsung heroes? Even just a simple thank you?

IMG_1358ed

The other video features Deniece Tan of Truly Test Kitchen, a former foreign exchange banker who decided to follow her passion and started the 'Truly' Curry Rice business with her business partner Joel. They painstakingly created the brand name 'Truly' Curry Rice from scratch and have grown the Truly Brand into a business focused on bringing delicious local food at amazing value to people from all walks of life.

With great interest, I understand that she has jumped onto the bandwagon of online delivery boom and bringing the whole hawker business online. While they are many ideas being suggested on how to preserve the hawker heritage, Deniece has put that into action. She could very well be the first hawker to embrace technology and using it as a platform to preserve our local street food.

IMG_5238ed

Having taken street food for granted, it’s time to preserve what we love. With all the empty talks, it is time to show some appreciation for our favourite hawkers by simply saying a ‘Thank You’. Singaporeans can play their part and get involved in the street food movement by simply taking a photo of their favourite street food experiences – be it a local dish or of the lovely hawkers behind it, with ‘thank you’ messages and share them on Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #uncagestreetfood.

Tiger X Camel Nasi Lemak Sambal Flavoured Nuts

Besides the series of videos, Tiger Beer has also collaborated with local business Camel, introducing the Nasi Lemak Sambal Flavoured Nuts. Consumers will receive a packet of the limited edition Nasi Lemak Sambal Flavoured Nuts with purchase of two 500ml cans of Tiger Beer (2 x 500ml) at select convenience stores, while stocks last. The Nasi Lemak Sambal Flavoured Nuts will also be available with purchase of three pints of draught beer or a bucket of Tiger Beer at select bars and pubs, while stocks last.

Tiger Street Food Lock Up Final 16 02 16

For aspiring entrepreneurs out there, Tiger is following through its commitment to help hawkers in the first phase of the movement, launching its inaugural Tiger Street Food Support Fund, accepting applications from now till 15 December on Tiger Beer's website. The Tiger Street Food Support Fund will allow all new hawkers to apply for and receive up to S$10,000 in funding from Tiger Beer, which will be given to successful applicants via reimbursement. This is only open to hawkers who have set up a cooked food stall in a hawker centre or coffeeshop within the last three months, or are looking into entering the trade for the first time. Up to 30 applicants with complete entries will be selected, and the announcement of successful applicants will be made in January 2017.

With the opening of two new hawker centres in Q1 next year – Jurong West and Pasir Ris Town, the inaugural Tiger Street Food Support Fund will definitely help to keep our hawker culture alive!
