Lai Heng Fried Kway Teow @ Compass Point Mall

When I started blogging about 9 months back, I was told that there was a good Fried Kway Teow stall at Sengkang Compass Point Shopping Mall Kopitiam foodcourt. Although I stay in Hougang which is like 2 train stations away from the mall, I have never eaten at the foodcourt.

Once you are at the stall seeing the uncle frying the Fried Kway Teow in the hot sizzling wok, you know you are in for a treat. The Fried Kway Teow is the wet type with a lot of the dark soya sauce. The portion of the kway teow and mee was about 50-50. Indeed the Fried Kway Teow was pretty good. I enjoyed the sweetness of the dark soya sauce and the moistness of the noodles.

Ya Hua Bak Kut Teh Eating House @ Havelock Road

Many good comments have been heard about the Bak Kut Teh at Ya Hua. The Bak Kut Teh was milder in flavor. The meat was tender and it came off the bone easily. However I prefer Bak Kut Teh that is more peppery.  I also find the pig livers were sliced too thick. They were quite raw and soft in the middle. Most disappointing was the Youtiao. They were not crispy at all. They were mass prepared and left sitting on the service table.

Burger Shack @ Bukit Timah

There are more and more burger places in Singapore. One of them is Burger Shack which is opened by Island Creamery just a few steps away. Food is ordered at the counter, paid and wait for your number to be called over the PA system when it is ready. I also notice the place has a lot of students, probably from the nearby schools.

My friend had the Grilled Chicken burger while I have the Mushroom Swiss burger. We also ordered nacho fries to share. The nacho fries was surprisingly quite good. We enjoyed it very much. For the burgers, they were nice but not great. My friend does not like the bun and I find the price a bit expensive.

No Name Hainanese Curry Rice @ Beo Crescent

During my previous visits to Beo Crescent Food Centre, I have always noticed the long queue outside this no name stall selling Hainanese Curry Rice in a run down coffeeshop. I finally found the time to check out the place and I was not disappointed.

There was not much varieties left when I reached the stall. The pork chops were unique, crispy and very good. Not the norm I have eaten at other Hainanese Curry Rice stall. The rest of the dishes which were commonly found at other Hainanese Curry Rice stall were nice too. Over all it was a satisfying and value for money lunch.

KOI Cafe @ Toa Payoh Central

KOI cafe has gone healthy and introduced Jasmine Green Tea. I was at Toa Payoh Central and saw the banner. The queue was surprisingly short at this branch. I only waited for about 5 minutes for my Ai Yu Green Tea. I enjoyed the combination of the Ai Yu and green tea. It was very refreshing.

Jalan Kayu Prata Cafe @ The Atrium Orchard

With coffee and tea chains like Starbuck, Spinelli, TCC and etc at almost every corners of Orchard, it is great to have Jalan Kayu Prata Cafe in Orchard road serving up one of my favourite hot beverages, Teh Tarik. It is a hot tea beverage made from black tea and milk by pouring the mixture repeatedly between two vessels giving it a thick frothy top.

I was not hungry so I did not try the roti prata or other Indian food on the menu. The Teh Tarik was really good and smooth. It also much cheaper than a cup of coffee from the cafe next door.

Forlino @ One Fullerton

Forlino is one of the top Italian restaurants in Singapore. I have wanted to check out this place for a long time after reading so many good reviews. Knowing that DBS credit card was having 1 for 1 promotion for the Gourmet and Degustation Menu until end of October 2010, I made a dinner reservation before it ends and had the Degustation Menu which was $148 ++ per pax. Considered a sell since I only need to pay half of the $300++ bill.

The restaurant is located on the 2nd floor of One Fullerton with a beautiful view of the Marina bay front. A bit disappointing was the noise from the bar. It was quite noisy and loud. Fortunately it was for a while as the crowd at the bar left shortly.

The menu started off with the Amus Bouche and freshly baked foccacia. The Amus Bouche was light and nice. With a pinch of salt added to the freshly baked foccacia, it was soft and tasty.

Nexts up was the Crab Salad with wild rucola, sweet pea leaves and cantaloupe. Another artistic, light and refreshing dish. The cantaloupe sauce was a good complement for the salad.

I can smell the aroma of the Pan Roasted King Scallops from far when it was served. Complementing the huge and fresh scallops were french beans and hazelnuts. I really enjoyed the dish, every bite was filled with the freshness and pan roasted aroma.

This is my first time having the tradition Italian pasta, Tagliatelle. The tagliatelle was served with duck confit and goose liver. The duck confit alone was a bit salty to me. However eaten together with the tagliatelle and goose liver, the taste was balanced.

I was looking forward to this dish wondering how an Italian restaurant will present the suckling pig in its menu? I was pleasantly surprised when I am served with a big piece of pork instead in a thin slice where how Chinese restaurant normally served it. The skin was crispy and the pork was moist and tender. A very well executed dish.

Dessert was creme brulee and raspberry ice cream. Simply fell in love with the creme burlee with its moist custard base and burnt caramel on the top. How I wish the restaurant could have served in a bigger portion.

The dinner was rounded up with a cup of coffee and petit fours. I googled and petit fours meant small confection generally eaten at the end of a meal or served as part of dessert. Its a french name meaning "small oven".

Honeymoon Dessert (满记甜品) @ 313 Somerset

Good news for dessert lover. Honeymoon dessert has opened another new outlet at 313 Somerset. I was pleasantly surprised to know that it has opened its door at 313 Somerset while hunting for a dessert place after dinner with my group.

Previously when I visited the Bugis Junction outlet, I only tried their mango desserts. My friend recommended me to their durian desserts which was really very good. For durian lovers, I highly recommend you to give their durian desserts a try. You will not be disappointed.

Imperial Treasure Steamboat Restaurant @ TripleOne Somerset

The restaurant offers premium steamboat with really fresh and high quality food. Price is a bit steep but definitely worth it for the freshness and quality. Besides ala carte menu, it does offer set menu for 2 and 4 persons too. My friends and I went for the set menu for 4 person. For the broth, we went for the Healty Chicken Soup and Traditional Pork's Bone Soup. Yes it is spelt as "Healty" in the menu (not sure whether it was a spelling error).

For the starter, we have the fried fish skin. The dip for the fried fish skin was very good. The fried fish skin was crispy and nice but I thought the size was a bit small compare to what I have eaten elsewhere.

Next up was fun time. We were presented with a tray of 12 ingredients for us to mix and match our own dipping sauce.

Lastly it was the main. When it was served there was a commotion in the group. We realized the prawns were alive and moving. OK! this is really fresh! It can be quite a disturbing sight to some when the prawns struggled in the hot steamboat. Besides the freshness of the seafood, the pork and beef were of premium quality too.

The Prata Place @ Springleaf Garden

The Prata Place is a branch of The Prata Shop at Casuarina. Parking slots are very limited here. The prata here is the crispy type and it was really good. Definitely much better than the one I ate at Upper Thomson Road.
