The HungryGoWhere Awards 2016 is back again with an expanded categories with 21 awards in total to be bagged by the best food and drinks in Singapore. The expanded category introduces an expanded Best Hawker category for voters to nominate and vote for their favourite local dishes.
Under the Best Restaurant Category, voters will get to vote for their favourite Chinese Cuisine, Western Cuisine, European Cuisine, Korean Cuisine, Japanese Cuisine and Halal Cuisine. One of the nominees for the Best Restaurant, Chinese Cuisine is Melben Seafood. Besides voting online at http://awards.hungrygowhere.com , this year votes have an easier way to vote via social media. Simply post a public post on the Facebook, Twitter or Instagram with two hashtags - #HGWawards and #(business name). Example #HGWawards and #MelbenSignature
One of the newest and expanded category is the Best Hawker Category in which voters can vote for the favourite Roti Prata, Bak Kut Teh, Hokkien Mee, Nasi Padang, Biryani, Laksa, Nasi Lemak, Bak Chor Mee, Hainanese Chicken Rice and Char Kway Teow. This is personally my favourite category as I think we need to give more recognition for our heritage local food.
The other category that is available for voting is Best Cafe/Bakery, Best Buffet, Best Bar/Lounge, Best New Restaurant and Best Food Fad. I am sure everyone has their own favourite stall. Why not give them some recognition and stand a chance to win something. 50 lucky voters will get a chane to win a pair of tickets to $100GOURMET, a dining event which sees Michelin Star chefs collaborate with local chefs in August and September.
To vote for The HungryGoWhere Awards 2016, Voters this year can simply vote via social media. Simply post a public post on the Facebook, Twitter or Instagram with two hashtags - #HGWawards and #(business name). Grandma Ban Mee (老妈子板面) @ Amoy Street Food Centre - Shiok Dry Chilli Ban Mee
Grandma Ban Mee (老妈子板面) at Amoy Food Centre is one of the newest addition to the food centre. It starts its business around December 2015, last year. I was in the vicinity the other day so I joined the queue to give the new stall a try.
Ban Mee Soup 2.8/5
I had the Ban Mee Soup ($4) which is quite value of money with the bowl of noodle filled to the brim with various ingredients such as mushrooms, ikan bilis and vegetables. The texture of the noodle is actually not bad, soft and has a little bit to it. Unfortunately, the soup lacked the depth and robustness to match the delightful ingredients.
Dry Chilli Ban Mee 4/5
The highlight at Grandma Ban Mee has to be their Dry Chilli Ban Mee ($5) which comes with minced pork, egg, ikan bilis, mushroom, fried shallots and most importantly the signature dry chilli. Give it a good toss to give the noodle a good even coat of the hae bee (dried shrimp) chilli, for a elevated fiery kick and lift in flavour.
After checking out Grandma Ban Mee, I would recommend trying the dry chilli ban mee. If you tolerant for spicy food is not too high, I would advice you to get a drink first. For the soup version, I think you can give it a miss.
