November 8 @ Thomson V Two (Upper Thomson)

IMG_1487ed

After the booming cafe scene at Tiong Bahru, Jalan Besar and Everton Park, a new cafe scene is slowly blossoming at Upper Thomson. November 8 is one of such cafes that has opened up recently in the area. Located at the Thomson V Two, the cafe unfortunately is hidden inside the building away from view outside unless you are aware of their existence. Stepping into the huge premise, the dimly lit cafe felt more like drinking hole than a cafe.

Cafe Latte 4/5

The barista at November 8 made a decent cup of Cafe Latte ($4.50) using the coffee beans from Dutch Colony.

Sweet Potato 2.8/5

Instead of the usual french fries, I ordered the Sweet Potato Fries ($8). A good change from the usual but it was missing that crispiness on top of its sweetness.

Summer Chicken 2.8/5

The Summer Chicken ($17) with baked chicken breast topped with cheese and served with broccoli and carrots on the side. The passion fruit sauce was too sweet for my liking and I left it aside. The chicken breast with the melted cheese is pretty flavourful but it was on the dry side.

It is a pity that November 8 with its huge premise does not have a proper kitchen. I felt that their weakest is the food section which there is much room for improvement.

Founder's Bak Kut Teh @ Rangoon Road

IMG_1853ed

Bak Kut Teh has been one of my favourite local delicacies. Typical there are 2 versions in Singapore, the Klang version that comes in a dark black herbal broth while the Teochew style has a clear and peppery soup. Given a choice, I would always go for the Teochew style that has a peppery kick to it. One of my favourite place selling this type of bak kut teh is Founder's Bak Kut Teh. The original branch is at Balestier Road but I usually go to the Rangoon Road branch which is more convenient and nearer to MRT station.

Pig Liver 2.5/5

The Pig Liver ($6.50) was tender and not over cooked. The texture was good but the taste was somehow too clean, lacking that gamy taste.

Bak Kut Teh Pork Ribs 4.2/5

Bak Kut Teh Spare Ribs 4/5

The Bak Kut Teh basically comes in 2 cuts, the Pork Ribs ($6.50) or Spare Ribs ($9). While the spare ribs are the more premium cut. I usually prefer the pork ribs which are more fatty and tender. The soup here is clear, peppery and pungent. One also can add a bowl of You Tiao ($2) to soak up the delish broth which many locals like to do so.

Beside the Bak Kut Teh, the restaurant also offers many other cooked dishes such as pig trotter, braised beancurd, braised innards and many other vegetables dishes.
