Tonny Restaurant @ Geylang Lorong 3

IMG_0287ed

March 2013 Makansutra dinner was held at Tonny Restaurant. The restaurant used to be at Joo Chiat Road and has recently moved into their new premise at Geylang Lorong 3. The restaurant is named after Chef Tonny himself who comes from Hong Kong serving home style Cantonese cuisine.

Hong Kong Wontons with Spicy Sauce 3.5/5

Dinner started with the Hong Kong Wontons with Spicy Sauce. The wantons were as huge as ping pong balls filled with delectable filling with the thin wanton skin. The spicy sauce unfortunately lacked the kick I was looking for.

Panfried Dace Fishcake 4.2/5

The Panfried Dace Fishcake was rather unique with Lup Cheong (Chinese sausage) in the middle. A medley of enjoyable textures and flavours coming together.

Crispy Yam with Truffle Oil 4.5.5

There are 2 signature dishes at Tonny Restaurant. They are Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon which is lobster puree cooked with egg white and Crispy Yam with Truffle Oil. Although we did not get to try the crouching tiger hidden dragon, we got to try the crispy yam with truffle oil.

Knowing Singaporean's love for yam which is usually served mashed or sliced, Chef Tonny innovated and created this crispy and crunchy yam that was cut into threads and deep fried to golden brown. A special sauce, sesame and truffle oil is added to enhance the taste. I thought this dish also makes a good Lunar New Year Lo Hei or Yusheng dish.

Deep Fried Prawns 3/5

The Deep Fried Prawns was fresh but quite ordinary. Deep fried to a nice crisp and golden brown, I even ate it together with the shell.

Fried Green Wrasse Fish Fillet with Crab Roe 4/5

The Fried Green Wrasse Fish Fillet with Crab Roe was another unique combination. I enjoyed the crab roe sauce that was drenched over the fish fillet. However, the highlight for me was the translucent Fen Pi (粉皮) or bean flour sheet made from green bean flour. My first time having it was at Hai Siang Joo Seafood Restaurant. Quite similar to Kway Teow but it is translucent and the texture is firmer.

Eggplant stuffed with Kurobuta Meat 4/5

I am falling in love all over again with eggplant. The Eggplant stuffed with Kurobuta Meat is served whole! For those that hate to eat eggplant because of the mushy texture may have a second thought as the whole eggplant is stuffed with delectable kurobuta meat.

French Beans with Homemade Waxed Meat 4/5

The French Beans with Homemade Waxed Meat may looked like two different ingredients anyhow put together but it was not. The 2 ingredients actually complement each other and I could not help going back for a few more serving.

Claypot Chicken with Chinese Wine 4.5/5

The Claypot Chicken with Chinese Wine was excellently executed. Not overly sophisticated but yet bringing out the best of the ingredient, the chicken was tender and nicely flavoured.

Braised Duck with Winter Bamboo Shoots 4.5/5

Among the diners at my table, there are some regulars who have eaten at Tonny Restaurant in their previous makansutra dinner session told me about the braised duck here hence I was looking forward to try it. The Braised Duck with Winter Bamboo Shoots indeed was worth the wait for its fragrant and tender meat.

Braised Fish Noodles with Goose Liver Paste 4.5/5

It was a full house and the food was a bit slow coming out of the kitchen. Some diners at our table wanted to make a move first but the organizers asked them to stay for the Braised Fish Noodles with Goose Liver Paste. Was it worth staying for the noodles? Yes it was! Made with fish meat and flour, the noodles had a nice firm and springy texture that was quite beyond my expectation in a good way.

Deep Fried Sesame Dumplings 3.5/5

March 2013 makansutra dinner ended on a sweet note with the Deep Fried Sesame Dumpling. Most of the dishes we tried were not in the menu hence please check with the restaurant first if you are interested to try any of the dishes.
