Spice Sutra Restaurant & Cafe @ Upper Thomson Road

IMG_1929

I still remember my first encounter with Spice Sutra a few years back. After reading good reviews about the restaurant on Hungrygowhere.com, my partner and I decide to check out the place. However we made a last minute U-turn at the restaurant's doorstep as there were hardly any customers. Thanks to Charlene from www.missuschewy.com asking me along for a food tasting session at Spice Sutra, I am able to judge for myself whether the reviews are truth.

Spice Sutra serves Northern Indian cuisine and it has an extensive menu of Vegetarian and Non-Vegetarian starters and mains. In addition, you can also have Naan & Roti, Rice & Briyani, Kebab Roll, Soup and Dessert on their menu.

Mix Grill Hotplate 4/5

The Mix Grill Hotplate ($31.90) came with an assortment of the chef's selection of meats marinated with oriental spices and grilled. A good starter where you get to try bits of everything that the restaurant offers.

Samosa Chaat 4.5/5

The Samosa Chaat ($5.90) is a best try. This is like an open faced version of the Samosa we usually have. It has chick peas, boiled potatoes, yogurt, ketchup, chopped onions, lime squeeze and spicy garnish. Don't be deceived by the greenish sauce, that is the highlight of this dish.

Butter Naan and Garlic Naan 4.2/5

Spice Sutra offers 6 types of Naan on their menu. We had the Butter Naan ($3.50) and Garlic Naan ($3.90) served in a nice basket and sliced into smaller pieces. The Naans were fluffy and not oily.

Butter Chicken 4/5

To go with the Naan, we went for the Butter Chicken ($15.90) so that we can dip it into the gravy and scoop the tender boneless tandoori chicken.

Mutton Masala 4.5/5

We also ordered the Mutton Masala ($15.90) which was very good. The mutton cubes cooked in spicy gravy was very soft and tender.

Prawn Biryani 4.5/5

The Prawn Biryani ($15.90) was the surprise for the night. The Basmati rice absorbed the aromatic flavours from the spices and retained the moisture making the rice very fragrant. Spice Sutra definitely is a place where spices and taste matters most.

Gajjar Haluwa 4/5

After all the savoury food, we decided to try the carrot dessert on the menu. It is a warm dessert with sweeten carrot strips. The taste and texture was rather unique to me, kind of like eating fruit cake.

Obolo (Architects of Bliss) @ 112 Katong

IMG_1890

I was down at 112 Katong last weekend to check out the new shopping mall in the east. Located at the basement of the mall is Obolo which means "the cake" in Portuguese. Obolo is behind the inspiring story of 2  architecture graduates Mac Woo & June Lee baking from homes to forming an online patisserie specializing in gourmet cheesecakes and chocolate cakes.

As the flagship patisserie cafe under Obolo’s repertoire of F&B lifestyle concepts, Obolo features a 44-seater open-concept cafe space and an impressive 8-feet showcase housing the best cakes and pastries that Obolo offers.

Sakura Flower Tea 4/5

Obolo serves an array of gourmet fine tea from Gryphon Tea Company which are a good complement to their lovely dessert. I had the Sakura Flower Tea which is a green tea that is light and refreshing with a little bitter after taste.

Dessert Platter 4.5/5

If you can't decide what to order from the myriad of mouth watering fine cakes, pastries and desserts that fills up the entire showcase, the All Day Dessert Platter comes with the choice of 1 slice of cake/tart, 2 macarons and 1 scoop of ice cream at $14.90++.

For their widely acclaimed french styled macarons, I had the Salted Caramel Chocolate and Fraise macarons. The macarons were well executed with a good balance of sweetness and the shells were moist.

Dessert Platter 4.5/5

The waitress recommends us to their signature mousse cake, Noisette. The waitress told us that it was voted as top 50 cakes by Strait Times and Top 10 chocolate cakes by OMY.com. A good recommendation by the waitress. It is beautifully executed, moist with a good balance of sweetness too.
