Song Kee Kway Teow Noodle Soup @ Toa Payoh Lorong 5 - Bouncy Fishball & Delicious Fish Dumpling

For some mysterious reason, it took me until now to visit Song Kee Kway Teow Noodle Soup at block 75 Toa Payoh Lorong 5. The stall is known for its fishball and fish dumpling. It is known to be related to the popular Song Kee in Serangoon Road before it pulled down its shutter and reopens in Tembeling Road.

Kway Teow Noodle Soup 3.8/5

The Kway Teow Noodle Soup comes with 5 fish balls made from yellow tail fish. The fresh fishball has a subtle fish flavour with a delectable springy texture. The bowl of noodle is further perfumed by the aromatic pork lard. Unfortunately the rice noodle's texture was on the thick side.

Mee Pok Dry 4/5

Not to be missed is the Mee Pok Dry tossed in a mix of chilli and tomato sauce. The noodle was cooked to a nice bite complemented by the sauce and topped with fried shallots and spring onions. It also comes with 6 delectable fish balls. I thought the chilli can be more spicy. Guess I have to ask the stall to add extra chilli sauce in my next visit.

Unfortunately during my visit, I was not able to savour their signature fish dumpling. If I am not wrong, they only served it in the evening due to a lack of manpower in making them.

SG Food on Foot's Monthly Grub Recommendation: December 2016

From the month of December 2016, I will start a monthly round up of my best eats in a monthly grub recommendation that are worth for my readers to check out. For the month of December 2016, I would like to recommend 6 new establishments that has opened recently, 2 cafes/restaurants that has introduced a new menu and lastly a hawker stall that has relocated.

Birds of A Feather

Birds of A Feather is opened by the folk behind the Good Wood Cafe, a successful cafe chain in Chengdu, China. The new establishment offers contemporary Western cuisine with a pronounced Sichuan influence. Diners will also be impressed with the interior design, with its lush greenery. It felt like dining in a garden especially in the day.

Recommend items: Find the Chicken in The Chillies, Oriental Bolognaise, Hot & Sour Chazuke.

Fat Lulu's Asian BBQ & Dessert

Replacing the now defunct Five & Dime is Fat LuLu's Asian BBQ & Dessert. The new concept by the same folks behind Five & Dime, sees two different chefs with two contrasting personalities coming together, offering Asian barbecue and dessert. Chef Sam is the BBQ dude while Chef Song is the dessert prince.

Recommend items: Ikan Bakar, Open Beef Ravioli, Childhood, Banana Bread in Brandy Butterscotch Sauce

Three times Michelin starred restaurant for 2015, 2016 and 2017 editions of Michelin Guide Hong Kong & Macua, Kam's Roast has chosen Singapore to open its very first oversea outlet in Singapore. Unfortunately for a start, they will not be selling their famous roasted goose due to AVA regulation. However their other roasted meat is still worth a visit.

Recommend items: Roasted Duck, Toro Char Siew, Steamed Rice with Homemade Sauce.

Ninja Cut

Ninja Cut is the sister outlet of the popular Ninja Bowl. The difference here is that the menu features more premium ingredients such as roast ribeye crackling pork belly, cod etc. Similar to the concept of Ninja Bowl, diners have the option to add a base of choice to the bowl such as soba noodles, quinoa, ninja rice and garden greens at an additional cost

Recommend items: Squid Fix, Polenta Mash, Cheeky Cheese

After a year of selling their famous Hong Kong egg tart at a food kiosk in Takasimaya, Tai Cheong Bakery has finally decided to open its first overseas dine-in concept at Holland Village, Singapore. Besides their popular egg tart, bakes and cakes, the 42 seater cafe also offers Hong Kong "Cha Chaan Teng" dishes.

Recommend items: Three Egg Macaroni Soup with Luncheon Meat, Three Coloured Silky Eggs with Rice, Egg Tart

Yentafo Kruengsonge by Madam A. Mallikaun is a renown Bangkok ‘yen ta fo’ (as the Thais knows it) noodle chain, with 28 outlets in Bangkok and 2 in Laos. It has set up its first Singapore outpost at Cineleisure Orchard.

Opened 11 months ago, Cheek by Jowl has been in my radar for a while. I finally get the chance to visit the modern Australian restaurant lead by the husband and wife team - Head Chef Rishi Naleendra and GM Manuela Toniolo, known for their original creations imbued with multi-cultural influences and the use of natural, sustainable ingredients. I tried the Chef's dinner menu ($88) which consists of snacks and 5 courses.

Recommend items: Chicken Liver Parfait Cigar and Date Jam, Coffin Bay Oyster with Somoked Tomato Granita, Smoked Mackerel, Honeydew Melon

Revolution Coffee welcomes back Chef Shen Tan with a new menu that features her signature Mod-Sin cuisine. Since her day at Wok & Barrel, I have been missing her signature nasi lemak and innovative pasta dishes.

Roxy Laksa is probably one of the oldest laksa stall in Singapore dated back to 1952 when it operated as a push cart stall outside the now demolished Roxy cinema. The recipe has since passed down to Mr Mike Lim, the grandson of Mr Lim Kiok Seng. Mr Mike Lim who used to run a hawker stall at East Coast Lagoon Food Village selling the heritage dish, has recently moved to Timbre+.
