After opening Keisuke Tonkotsu King at Orchid Hotel and Keisuke Ramen at Millenia Walk, Chef Keisuke Takeda the ramen King of Tokyo Ramen Championship 2011 has opened his 3rd restaurant Ramen Keisuke Tori King in Singapore at the newly renovated Amara Hotel Shopping Mall also renewed as 100AM.

There was still a queue when I arrived at the restaurant at about 145pm. I was given a slip of paper to take my order first while helping myself to the free mugicha. Upon ushered to our seats, service was like a breeze. Free flow bean sprouts, ice water, sesame and our ramen were brought to our table.

Like Keisuke Tonkotsu King, Ramen Keisuke Tori King serves free flow hard boiled egg too. It comes in both normal and low cholesterol types.

Green Spicy Tori King Ramen Special 4.5/5

After reading reviews about the wasabi broth, I have been looking forward to try it. The Green Spicy Tori King Ramen Special ($16.90) comes with all the toppings (seaweed & flavoured egg). You can also choose the taste of soup (light/normal/strong), chicken oil (no oil/less oil/normal/more) and texture of noodle (hard/normal/soft) during your order as well as the ingredients (spring onion/deep fried onion/black fungus) you don't want the chef to add into your bowl of ramen.

Resting on the chicken thigh was a bed of wasabi. Mixing it with the chicken broth, it gave the broth an unique delectable flavour with a mild wasabi spiciness. The tamago egg was well flavoured and not too salty.

Black Spicy Tori King Ramen Special 4.2/5

Each bowl of ramen comes with the standard gigantic chicken thigh and char siew. The star is defintiely the chicken thigh which was very tender and fell off the bone with ease. The Black Spicy Tori King Ramen ($16.90) comes with toasted szechuan peppercorn and garlic in oil that gave the chicken broth the fragrant toasty aroma.

Having tried both Marutama Ramen and Marukin Ramen Tokyo that used chicken stock for their ramen, I think Chef Keisuke Takeda nailed his version. While chicken stock ramen is less oily and lighter, Keisuke Tori King's broth is more robust. In addition, the generous servicing of chicken thigh and char siew definitely is a crowd winner.

The Ugly Cakes Shop - Online Bakery Shop

IMG_8406ed

Met up with Lisa Tan ( @thelittlebowl ) a couple of weeks back and she brought me some Peanut Butter Cupcakes and Drizzle Cakes. I have tried her cakes several times and I really like them. She has this humble online bakery shop called The Ugly Cakes Shop.

You may wonder why the name Ugly Cakes? Well. The Ugly Cake Shop does not believe in using artificial colouring, fondant, gum paste or marzipan. While these additions make for beautiful cakes, the baker believes that the more natural ingredients (and the fewer chemicals) you put in your body the better! :)

With a kind heart and a vision to feed the poor. Lisa has pledged and donates 20% of its proceeds to support the meals of undernourished kids in Timor-Leste. Every month she donates $150 to charity and if business is poor she will top up the balance from her own pocket.

Peanut Butter Cupcake Rose (Sally)

The Peanut Butter Cupcake Rose (Sally) was really yummy. The cupcake was moist and rich in flavours. The natural richness of the flavours stood out for me in The Ugly Cakes Shop's cupcake. By the way, all the cakes at The Ugly Cake Shop are named after Lisa's loved ones and friends.

Besides the cupcakes, Lisa also baked me some Lemon Drizzle Cake (Kamski) and Lime Drizzle Cake (Maggie). They are pound cakes from British recipe. Enjoyed how the ingredients worked harmoniously together in the final product. I could not decide which I preferred as both were as good.
