Wheat Baumkuchen @ Toa Payoh Central

Quite sometime back I went back to Wheat Baumkuchen with a few friends. Actually wanted to introduce them to the Cool Noodles here after we were all too full after a food tasting session. We ended up having tea and cakes. If you are interested to read about the Cool Noodles, you can read my review here.

The core business of  Wheat Baumkuchen is still their Baumkuchens. Baumkuchen is a type of layered cake origin from Germany. It is literally translated as "tree cake" because of the rings formed from the different layers of the cake. Baumkuchen was later introduced in Japan and became popular.

For the plain Baumkuchens, we shared the Green Tea and Classic Original flavours. Actually Baumkuchen resembles Kueh Lapis. another type of layered cake that is popular in South East Asia. However Baumkuchen has a firmer texture and at least at Wheat Baumkuchen there are different flavours to cater for different palates.

I thought it was very innovative and creative of Wheat Baumkuchen to transform the traditional Baumkuchen into a modern delicacy with different toppings like similar to the cupcakes. These injection of modern elements into a traditional snack definitely will help to capture the taste buds of the new generations.

Sin Chie Toke Huan Hainanese Curry Rice @ Upper Serangoon Road

Just a couple of steps from my place is a popular Hainanese Curry Rice at Upper Serangoon Road. This rustic eating house only opens at 6pm daily.

The first thing that caught my eyes was the steamed Minced Pork Patty that was shaped into a huge ball shape. The patty was nicely marinated with a springy texture.

The Sotong was a bit overcooked. It did not have the firm and springy texture. The sauce was also too sweet for me. I would prefer it to be on the spicy side.

The Curry Chicken was not up to my mark. I find it too bland and watery. It was not spicy at all.

The Cabbage was soft and stewed perfectly retaining the sweetness of the Cabbage.

The thinnly sliced bread crumbed Pork Chop was a bit dry and tough.

Overall I find this place is a bit overrated but then it is still very popular with people staying nearby. A queue can always be seen at the eating house. By the way, the congee here is pretty good.
