Department of Caffeine @ Duxton Road

IMG_3454ed

In recent time, it seems like Singapore is gradually turning into a little Melbourne with new cafes opening in every corners of Singapore. Among these wave of new coffee culture in Singapore, Department of Caffeine (DOC) has gained a group of followers and fan base with the coffee and food. The cafe located at the start of Duxton Road occupying a corner unit was rather unnoticeable. If not that I have known the address beforehand I would have missed it.

The peaceful stretch of Duxton Road was quickly interrupted by the buzzing activities inside the cafe where I pushed open the entry. It was taken back by the vibe inside the cafe that is packed to the brim. It was like stepping into another world.

Lavendar & Honey Teacake 2/5

The coffee at Department of Caffeine uses coffee beans from Five Senses. I had the Latte ($5) which I did not enjoy. While the coffee is rich and strong, I wanted more milk for my latte which was definitely missing. The Lavendar & Honey Teacake ($5) was a turn off with the dry texture. The overly perfumed lavendar flavour of the cake made it tasted artificial.

Buttermilk Waffles 2.5/5

I also tried the Buttermilk Waffles ($13.50) that was topped with butter rum banana and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. While the waffle was thick and fluffy, it was limp and not crispy. It felt that the waffle had sat for too long after it had been made.

During my visit, all the eggs item on the menu was crossed out. My friend checked and the waiter replied that they have run out of eggs. I would have love to try the brunch items and have a more complete review of the hype of this place. Maybe I should drop by the cafe another time when I am in the vicinity.

  4. reading this review and some of the subsequent comments really made me lose faith in humanity. Not only are your reviews scathingly simple, so is the writer.

"While the coffee is RICH and STRONG". Wow, what a totally bland description of coffee. Fantastic. You take it one step further by complaining about a latte having not enough milk? I'm sorry what? If you were even close to remotely being a "coffee enthusiast", wait, not even that. A "coffee drinker", you would like most others think that the latte is has too much milk. It IS an 8 ounce glass mind you, if you had enough coffee you would know. Well, what can one expect from someone who doesn't like the coffee because there wasn't enough milk? What a crock of rubbish, just utter rubbish.

The first time i went there on a weekend, was at 4 pm. It was packed and most of items were already sold out. What does this imply? It means that the place is popular enough that most of their main dishes actually "sell out".

It also means that you don't go to a cafe at 4pm expecting them to have unlimited supplies of food. Which is why the next time i went, it was at 1030. The F&B industry is killer in Singapore, if you prepare to much food youre just throwing it away when you don't sell it. Goes to show how much you know about the runnings of things in the industry.

Oh right, the place is a CAFE.

NOT a bloody RESTAURANT. You dont see dishes priced more than $20 and its almost as if you're complaining that you're not getting Michelin Star quality food.

Expect to hear from me more often as I source out more idiotic "food bloggers" like you and share your ignorance for all to see.
