Song Kee Fishball Noodle @ Upper Serangoon Road

IMG_0843ed

I have always noticed a crowd at Song Kee Fishball Noodle along Upper Serangoon Road whenever I am on my way home and I have always wanted to check out the place. Managed to ask a friend who stays at Serangoon one evening to join me. When I reached the place around 1130pm, the place was already pretty crowded with many tables waiting for their order. I was told that I need to wait for 30 minutes and indeed I did.

Mee Kia Dry 4/5

We ordered a bowl of Mee Kia Dry ($3.50) and Mee Pok Dry ($3.50). Each bowl of noodle came with  3 fishballs, a fish dumpling (Her Giao) and a Tao Pok stuffed with fish paste. The noodles and chilli sauce were rather normal. The star has to be their ingredients and the used of pork lard.

The fishball that is about the size of a ping pong ball is made from yellowtail. The fishball was springy and bouncy. I like the fish dumpling (Her Giao) the most. Biting into the fish dumpling, the aroma of the shallot oil from the filling simply filled the whole mouth. I only visit I can have more of them in my bowl of noodle.

I have been observing but still can't figure out why the uncle takes so long to cook a bowl of noodle. His motion was pretty fast and it doesn't seem to have unnecessary action. Anyway, if you do visit Song Kee Fishball Noodle and there is a crowd, proceed to make your order and take a queue number first before finding a seat. The wait can be quite long. For the drinks you can take it yourself from the fridge first. Just pay together with the noodle when it is served.

  1. I love a decent bowl of fish ball noodles! Hard to find a good one nowadays. Those in 'most' food courts and coffeeshops are CMI.

I dont mind waiting half an hr if its nice =)

  3. the opening hours are not correct. They don't open till 7:10pm at night. By then, the queue already started forming at 6:30pm as most people don't expect them not to be opened. They take their own time to open even though they officially says 6:45pm till 6am.

  5. Hi, I just went down to the shop at around 1:45am and they already close for the day. The workers are sitting inside, drinking coffee tea. So I guess the opening hours are up to them to decide on that day itself?

  6. today first time try their $6 noodle, waited 45min, took a few bites but spit out immediately, the noodle is mediocre, the fishball is mostly thick flour, the soup is very salty, left a bad aftertaste. threw away the food, their rating: Fail, avoid this stall the queue hype is false shine

  8. I've been a regular and the minimum wait is always 30mins. So today after having our first serving of food, we ordered extra bowl of noodles. It tasted real bad and the noodle was undercooked. I talk to the lady and the chef about it and requested for another bowl and I wasnt trying to cheat them for a bowl or anything along that line.

They agreed unwillingly, SO HERE'S THE WORST PART:
They RECOOK the leftover noodles that we tried and it was terribly OVERCOOKED and translucent.

Can you imagine our saliva in the boiling water? eew.. I wonder they did that how many times.

Never going back there again although it tasted pretty good.

My favourite meepok is at Jalan Membina foodcourt! Deserve a try since its only $3.20.

    ciao.

    1. This is really bad attitude in service. Been hearing too much bad thing about them. Probably the good business has gone over their head. Thanks for the recommendation on Jalan Membina, if I have the time will check it out.
