The Carving Board @ Yuhua Village (Jurong East)

IMG_0426ed

The wooden board and the mouth watering western food has been appearing on my instagram timeline lately so I decided to make my way down to The Carving Board at Jurong East to check out this modernize hawker stall inside a coffeeshop in Jurong East.

Battered Calamari Rings with Curry Mayo Sauce 2.5/5

We started with some light bites in the Battered Calamari Rings with Curry Mayo Sauce ($4.50). Unfortunately, this taste like frozen calamari with non of the springy texture innard, Instead it was some sort of powdery. I would suggest giving it a miss.

Mixed Grill 4/5

From the Premium House Grill section of the menu, I ordered the Mixed Grill ($17) to get a taste of everything. Served on a wooden board, there was beef steak, bratwurst, rosemary chicken chop with toasted bread and salad. All premium house grill comes with a choice of side and sauce. The beef steak was ok but not the best cut. The favourite on the plate has to be the rosemary chicken chop that is flavourful and grilled to a tender juicy bite.

150 Days Australian Angus Flank Steak 4/5

The other selection on the premium house grill menu I tried is the 150 days Australian Angus Flank Steak ($16). I had my flank cooked medium so that it would not end up too tough. The beautiful beef comes with a chewy bite but it was easy for the teeth and enjoyable.

Overall I find that the new concept has brought hawker food somewhat into a new and modernize level while keeping truth to serving good quality food. Price is quite reasonable with the quality The Carving Board is offering. Aston also started from a hawker stall and maybe The Carving Board can be the next Aston if they continue to work hard and maintain its quality and standard.

Free-Delivery-2-2
I have known of pizza or fast food delivery but restaurant quality Chinese cuisine delivered right to the doorstep is something new. Not known to many, Old Hong Kong Kitchen has recently introduced home delivery with no GST or Service Charge. There is even free delivery if one orders $80 or more in net spending (promotional period). After that a flat rate of $6 for any parts of Singapore.

Browsing through the website, I had a hard time deciding what to order. I was overwhelmed by the number of items available for home delivery. There are more than a hundred food items ranging from appetizers, soup, mains, dessert and even dim sum.

Daily Double Boiled Soup of the Day 4/5

When the Daily Double Boiled Soup of the Day ($6.80) arrived from the delivery, it was still warm. My advice is to heat it up again before consuming to enjoy the full sweetness of the ingredients that has been boiled for hours. Do note that the bowl is rather small portion which is only good for one pax.

Poached Vegetables with Salted Egg & Century Egg in Superior Stock 4.2/5

One of my favourite dishes among the delivery I have ordered is the Poached Vegetables with Salted Egg & Century Egg in Superior Stock ($20). The highlight has to be the superior stock complemented by the salted egg and century egg, giving the whole dish a boost in flavours and enjoyment.

Soon Hock Fish 3.8/5

When I saw they offered steamed fish in their delivery menu, I got me some what excited. I wonder how they going to manage the doneness of the fish as consideration has to be put in on the journey time. I ordered the Soon Hock Fish ($54) in Hong Kong Style. The sauce of the fish is delivered separately, to be poured over the fish before consuming. The fish itself was cooked to a nice moist and tender texture considering the among of time it has left the kitchen to my home. Of course it can't be compared to having a la minute steamed fish served from the kitchen to the table in the restaurant.

BBQ Meat Platter (3 Types) 4/5

Last but not least, I decided to wrap up my first Chinese home delivery meal with a 3 types of BBQ Meat Platter ($48) which is good to served 4-6 pax. I decided to go for the Roasted Duck, Soya Sauce Chicken and Sio Bak. The roasts were all chopped to a nice generous portion. My favourite among the 3 different roasts is the roasted duck.

Overall I find the Old Hong Kong Kitchen Chinese food home delivery offers a alternative choice to your usual pizza or fast food. With more than 100 over food items in their delivery menu, there is so much choices, imagine you can even enjoy dim sum in the comfort of your home.
